I ordered a gluten free pizza online and an order of breadsticks. The quattro formaggio sausage and mushrooms pizza was quite tasty, and the gf crust was nice and thin/crispy. The mozzarella filled breadsticks were not good. They were soggy and d the marinara was served cold. I'd pass. Pizzicato is a gem. This location is an awesome neighborhood pizza joint for South Tabor. I have a few friends from out of town that rant and rave about Pizzicato all the time and it's the first place they want to stop. It's been such a staple in Portland Metro for so long I think it goes under the radar - being lowkey one of the best all around pizza spots in town. Great Salads, great pizzas, paninis, specials, and good price comparatively. The team at this location has been awesome every time I stop in. I've had so many pizzas here that I could write a book--so many that my go-to now is often the pizza of the month. Otherwise, it's the Wild Mushroom, the Puttanesca, or the Margherita. The best pizza they've ever had, however, is no longer on the menu, and it's a real shame. It was called The Rudy, and it had amazing lamb sausage, caramelized onions, mascarpone & green onion on a garlic/olive oil base (I would give five stars if it were still on the menu). It was perfection and still haunts me. Pizzicato uses a corn meal dusting that's just right for the medium-to-thin crust crunch, if you're a fan of the dust. Their best sides, IMO, are the (often available) Harissa Roasted Carrots, the Arugula Pear Salad, the Radicchio & Hazelnut, and the Chinese Chop (the Caesar is too garlicky in a not good way, and I like garlic). read more

After coming to Pizzicato since they opened their doors, I had an appalling experience this evening that really has me floored. My husband and I frequently get salads on Friday night at Pizzicato because they're delicious. I get the Greek salad and he gets the arugula pear with the unsugared walnuts. When we called to place the order my husband asked if they had regular walnuts and was told they did not. We picked up the salads, got home, put them in a bowl and all of the walnuts were black, burnt, bitter and inedible. He was going to try to eat it, but after the first bite, he said it he couldn't do it. So I call and tell them that I'm bringing the salad back and again asked if they have unsugared walnuts and again was told no. I get there and there's a different person at the counter (not the woman who took our order) so I show him the salad and the blackened walnuts and ask if they are shipped that way to the store. No they're not, and would I like plain walnuts? So I said, "then you lied about not having them?" Things really unraveled after that. Four people got into the discussion where they explain to me that the previous general manager who is no longer there as of 2 days ago told them to tell customers they only have candied nuts, I say, "But he's not here now." Then, they explain, well, they thought it was just a corporate policy so they were sticking to it. To me, the worst thing is that they put burnt walnuts on a salad and served it to a customer. Then, when the customer tells them it's inedible and brings it back, they don't offer to refund it, LIKE ANY OTHER RESTAURANT WOULD DO. Not only did they not offer a credit, the manager tried to gaslight me saying the nuts were not black lumps of carbon--they were normal. It was a scene out of a Coen Bros movie. To their credit, they remade the salad, but after they doubled down on defending their bleeping nuts, I said I didn't want it, I just wanted my money back. The manager told me no, I couldn't have a credit because I called them a liar, and I just needed to leave with my salad. (I didn't call them a liar, I pointed out they were lying, which, although they were, was an inflammatory observation). I repeated that I didn't want the salad, I wanted my money back, and she said that I had to go or she was calling the "non emergency police." That wasn't much of a threat, and we had a couple more rounds of her pushing the salad at me and me telling her no, I want a refund. Finally, she said she'd give me my money back, but "you'll be 86d, and you can't come here anymore." There were so many things I could've said to that, but I thanked her and left with my credit. After recounting this whole thing to my friend, she observed that these employees aren't trained or paid enough to know how to handle customer issues. Which is probably true. It was Karen of me to get into the integrity issues with them. If I had simply walked in, declined plain walnuts, and asked for a refund, they might have given it to me. But I've been 86d, so we'll never have the opportunity to find out. read more

Their pizza is yummy but the margherita pizza is kind of a scam. Usually margherita has san marzano tomato base with slices of fresh mozzarella and basil but theirs just has slices of regular tomato and a dusting of shredded mozzarella, and basil, reminiscent of a white pizza but not as good. It would be less of an annoying if their pizza wasn't so freaking expensive. It's disappointing when you think you are splurging on something nice and it feels like they cut corners. Pizzicato Pizza is a typical pizza place where you can order slices of the pizzas they offer that day or you can order a whole pizza off their menu. Along with pizza, they have sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. Food: All of the slices were good sized portions and on thin crust. Cheese Pizza - This was pretty standard pizza. Veggie Pizza - standard, but I felt like I could have had more toppings Pizzicato Breadsticks - This appetizer was really good. It was full of cheese. It looks like it was baked as one really long breadstick that is then cut to slices after it is done baking. I would recommend this for sure. The pizza sauce it came with to dip was also good. Service: The guy behind the counter was super nice. It was towards the end of the day, and he gave my friend a free cookie. When one of our slices of pizza was taking longer to come out, he went to see what had happened. It looked like his coworker took it by accident. He gave us an extra free slice to make up for the wait on the one slice. When we were looking at what slices were available, he came over to tell us there were also slices in the back that we can order. I was a little hesitant to order pizza from Pizzicato, as we have a handful of our favorite places in town and usually have that in rotation, but a friend of mine mentioned that this was one of their favorite pizza joints in town. I placed my order over the phone and was given a time of 30 minutes. I drove over and it was hot fresh and ready to go. They have a little parking lot, which is why I chose the Mt.Tabor location over Laurelhurst or Sellwood. We got the Thai Peanut on one half, and the other the Very Veggie. The Very Veggie was a veggie delight with toppings galore: mushrooms, artichokes, olives, tomatoes, and roasted veggies. If you like a smorgasbord of veggies on your pizza, then you'll like Pizzicato's veggie pizza. A couple of my favorite pizza restaurants in town, usually only have a handful of toppings, it's nice to be able to have a salad on top of my pizza if I want one. I haven't hopped on the Pizzicato bandwagon ever, despite a growing presence throughout Portland and now northern California (whoa!). There might be some subtle bias with being around New York pizza so often, but when there is fresh ingredients, thin slices and a good variety of toppings, one will ultimately find something they like here. The pizzas might be the star of the show, though I've yet to fall in love with any of them. Many folks have touted the Puttanesca ($26 Large) as their favorite, but the artichokes and olives haven't tasted as wonderful as they look. I also have similar results from the Molto Carne ($26 Large), which featured a hearty portion of pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, and olives, but was largely bland for every bite. There was some high hopes with the Kale and Italian Sausage ($27 Large), but the flavors just weren't potent enough to elicit much fanfare on my end. That said, I'm glad they offer an interesting mix of topping combos, including a nice array of vegan options as well. Salads and paninis have been a different story however. At a little over $8 each, the paninis are served in a fluffy ciabatta bread that works as the perfect lunch when served fresh. The Grinder (ham, pepperoni, bacon, provolone, peppers) gets a thumbs up, as does the The Club (chicken, bacon, avocado, ripe tomato, mayo, provolone). When they come with a side salad, the Arugula Pear and Kale Feta have easily emerged as standouts from the rest of the leafy pack. The staff is understandably young, even if a bit hipster, but super friendly. While they haven't been as spot on as I had hoped for the pizza recommendations, they've certainly made up for it with stellar work and infectious amiability. This aspect alone is enough to warrant many return visits. read more

Not my favorite experience. Knowing that I was in a very celiac unsafe space, I simply asked if they would change their gloves. I got back an honest response but also snarky.
