Found PJ Wines on the way up to my doctor one fine day. I am not really supposed to drink at all due to the meds I take but well, if European doctors say a person on these meds is okay having a couple of glasses of wine a week, then who am I to argue? The challenge becomes finding a good wine by the glass...or two. There is a bodega in midtown where I found a demi-bottle (two glasses) of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc but those robbers charge $18! Crikey! When I found PJ Wines I asked them if they carried the demi-bottles. They did not but said they'd be happy to order it for me. Really? Yes! And that's how I got two cases of 1/2 bottles of the KC SB delivered to my door! Love this place! read more

To start off this review is strictly on the dumb policy that the store imposed on me today. I would like to reaffirm...the selection, service and knowledgeable staff are great. I really wanted to give this review a one star..but I did have great service and like the store for the prices and selection. Now for the low stars...When I walked into the store today to stock up, which we do every holiday season, I was met with a security guard. I was told that my daughter was not allowed to be with me and my wife and had to stay in a corner next to the exit. At this point I was confused, as to why..??? He pointed at a sign on the door that said no entry for anyone under 21. I started questioning this new policy or old, either way it was never in forced until today. I saw another couple walk in with their son who looked about 8 or 9 and the guard said nothing, this got me more irritated. First let's get this straight, PJ Wine is a liquor/wine store...NOT a strip joint or a bar. I get you you don't want teenagers what kids accompanied with adults no problem. Then their hard liquor was separated by boxes and you had to ask a staff member to get you what you wanted. The more expensive stuff was behind glass cabinets. After giving it further thought the exit was in protected...the guard served more of a bouncer roll. All that being said...I really didn't feel like having my daughter separated from me not truly understanding the thought process behind this policy. In my experience if someone wanted to shoplift liquor don't think that a merlot would be their first choice especially a teenager. Placing a security guard / bouncer at the entrance and no one at the exit makes shoplifting a mood point. Now to end my rant...I really do like this store for the knowledgeable staff, the prices and selection and will be back. On final note...if you have kids leave them at home when coming here. I also really hope that management reads this from the store and can logically explain this idiotic policy of theirs. read more

A recovering alcoholic living near PJ's is like a recovering overeater living next to a 24 hour bodega, an all you can eat buffet, and like eighteen McDonaldses. It's way more a matter of "when" than "if." Uptown oenophile? Saints be praised! A whole massive wall in this cavernous flourescent warehouse is devoted to the stuff, from the boxed variety on up. (And those prices! $20 for a Caymus Conundrum? Heck yes!) There are plenty of additional racks devoted to the higher end vino too, and come on people, if a more hoity toity chic feeling than buying off the racks at PJ's is to be found north of Dyckman, I have not yet experienced it. On weekends and some weeknights, be on the lookout for the diplomatic wine staff wandering about if you need a suggestion. This can be tricky because they don't wear nametags, but I've found they're good spotters of indicisive faces. Booze? Got that too, and got it in spades. Even got a fancy schmancy cache of ridiculously high end hooch behind glass and under lock and key just past the check out lines. It's easy to walk past seeing as you've just paid and are making a bee line out the door, but it's worth a stop if only to ogle and dream. DOWNSIDES: * No beer. * Not a ton in the way of mixers. Well, okay, they have aperitifs and the like, but who seriously needs that much vermouth? And they don't have bitters. Bitters! * Frequent appearances of bar people buying liquor in bulk and surreptitiously paying in cash in order to avoid wholesale prices at their places of business. Doesn't affect my shopping experience other than holding up the line a bit, but it's annoying. * Multiple free wine and liquor samples on Friday and Saturday nights. Whenever I need a cheap bottle of wine, hard cider, or liquor for a party, this is the place I now go to and cherish dearly. It's easily one of the biggest wine and liquor stores I can think of, and definitely the biggest in this part of Manhattan. The selection is almost a little mind-boggling, and it is admittedly fun to wonder around. Have to agree with Avion T. This is a kind of the Soup Nazi of wine stores. The lines (three) are very confusing and chaotic. My cashier was very abrupt if not downright rude. But I tasted a wine for 7.99, Epica, and loved it. Bought two. If you're in upper Manhattan it's definitely worth a stop (A or 1 trains both close enough). Outstanding selection and price. A definite perk of living in or near Inwood. I didn't realize they shipped. If they ship to San Diego as one reviewer noted, they should ship to the UES. Its huge and the walls seem to glisten with their glass bottles just beckoning you to take them home. If you can drink it you'll find it at PJ's. I have had better experiences at this location, however tonight, I was never more horrified when I saw the female owner fire 2 employees just at closing with a line full of customers. Now if there actions were serious like theft then I would imagine law enforcement would have been called, otherwise this was a poor representation of the management and for the recently unemployed clerks. Being a HR manager myself these employees have rights and their self respect was jeopardized to end their respective employment in a crowded store. Pros - This liquor store has an amazing selection of wine and liquor that are more than fairly priced. Whether you're looking for a cheap bottle of wine or a bottle of top shelf liquor - this is your spot. Cons - Policies and customer service! I shop here every other week and before I became a regular, they would always ask me for ID except when I pay with cash. The clerk would always want to confirm that my debit/credit card was actually mine. I'm assuming they've been scammed a few times, but that's not a good reason to punish every patron that comes through your door. This is the first business I've ever been to that has a policy of looking at your ID when paying with debit. On certain days they also want you to check-in your personal bag before shopping and then check your receipt and look at your bag before leaving. You should never give your customers an experience that's similar to an airport security check just to purchase liquor. The cashiers never greet you or ask whether you had a good shopping experience or find everything that you were looking for. It's almost like they're calling the next customer before your receipt prints. Management must have a "I'm too good for customer service" mentality based on their profits. read more

Most likely whoever shopped here with a car double park has a story on getting a ticket. I think the cops are hiding in the Pharmacy or behind Christmas trees during the season. So great prices if you exclude the ticket. Only of very rare occasions have I not found certain wines, but they've got plenty of what I generally want. Sometimes you got two people who are willing to help and sometimes when they're unloading new stuff they'll disregard your very existence. This is the ultimate place in the neighborhood to test out the logic that cheap wine can be good wine or you could just go with what you know. PJ Wine is huge (about the size an average chain drugstore). The store is split in half between wines and spirits. Their wine selection and prices are amazing, you'll always find a good bottle on sale, often with a good case discount. You can get Andre by the case here for about $4 a bottle! The staff is split up into a few different classes. There are the cashiers (all Dominican ladies), the stock guys, a demo girl, and one Wine Guy. Everyone's friendly, and the stock guys will promptly bring out a case of whatever you're asking for, but your wine questions etc should be directed to the Wine Guy. I was happy with the advice he gave me (I was looking for a very dry Riesling. He claimed their selection in that category was lacking, but still came up with two great picks) The liquor selection deserves its own write-up. This is not a wholesaler (and it's not kosher to resell retail booze) but the prices on top shelf liquor here are so low, you'll often find what looks like club owners stocking up here. They've got all of the major spirits at every price point, from the rotgut Popov/Alexei/Nikolai, to the generic well stuff, to the fancy colored bottles. They've also got some harder-to-find frat party staples like double-proof Vodka, girly Pucker cordials, and novelty stuff like Nuvo. The location is halfway between two A-train stations (207 and Dyckman), and parking is tough. You're going to end up leaving here with at least 6 bottles, so bring a friend to watch your car (or to help you lug boxes to the subway). read more

On several occasions, the wine experts treated me greatly yet the rest of their staff is lax, incompetent, uninterested in providing help & they stand around chit chatting instead of working. But what is truly great about this place is their knowledge. You can ask anyone on the floor on advise on their wines and they will know everything about every single wine and they will give you an honest answer. They know their wines and they also know what is good for a decent price, so do not be afraid to ask for a good but inexpensive wine at this store because they WILL hook you up and they will help you find out which flavors you would like. PJ's is conveniently open 7 days a week for a Booze Trek. It could use a better selection of Local Wines. I hesitate from 3 Stars because most wines are sub-par coming from Europe. Maybe they should support Local wines instead and carry some wine from Long-Island, California, and the Pacific Northwest right here in the Good Ole USA. Just because its from Europe does not mean that the quality is great. The best wines I have tasted are made right here under our noses. Maybe we should look around and start appreciating our own locally grown wines. As far as convenience this store is convenient in an uptown location and they have a good selection of Liquor; however as far as wine....they need to stock up more on the Californian, Long Island, and Pacific Northwest Wines because some of the European wines they carry are subpar. read more

Awesome. We went here for a Spanish wine tasting event (which coincidentally served Italian wines too.) They served a very interesting 68' Primativo, but I was more impressed by the overall seleciton in the store compared to what they were tasting. The layout is one of the MOST shopper-friendly wine places I've ever been to (and that says a lot). You would hope that a once-in-the-main Irish nabe would have a liquor store. Lo, and behold! There is indeed a well-stocked one located south of 207th and Broadway. Walking through the door took me back to the days of drive-through liquor stores back in Lubbock, Texas. Not that you'll be driving through the store, mind you, but the warehouse is not just a hole-in-the-wall. It almost feels like a liquor supermarket, which is ideal considering that the way the subways have been running (read as: not running) on select weekends throughout the year. If you can't make it downtown, you can always stock up here on the weekends and invite your friends over for a Non-Bodega liquor party. You won't be whining about the wine...unless of course you run out, and the liquor may make you sicker, but they have quite the inventory. You can relive your college days with Everclear yet also pick up that nice merlot for that walk through Inwood Hill Park. With their great prices, you can afford to get a lil Pavlovian in the aisles. PJ Wine is the best wine and spirit shop in NYC. It has everything, and they sell everything at rock bottom prices. I am one of the lucky few wine club members who has access to private wine tastings, and additional discounts. The store has a very large selection of Spanish wine's, along with multiple vintages of Vega-Sicilia. You may ask why did I only award four stars? Well...if you go bring a step ladder, and a Spanish language app. Service @ PJ is rarer that certain vintages, and nobody speaks English as a first language. One of the best, most extensive wine and liquor shops in Upper Manhattan, certainly in Inwood. It's huge, housing many, many racks and shelves of wines by type and country, with those helpful notes I love so much which tells you more about particular bottles. Prices are very reasonable and via the great staff (when they're around) and searching on my own, I've found some great deals under $20 every time I'm here. They do have higher-priced wines too, if that's what you're looking for. The other half of the store is dedicated to liquor, of which they have a vast range as well! Prices are pretty good for that too. They're open on Sundays and they deliver, though I've yet to take advantage of that. read more

Very large wine and liquor store with super reasonable prices for Manhattan. They have many varieties of wine and lots of rotating specials. They also have a delivery service, but it's the kind where you have to order in advance with a minimum and they only deliver once a day in the middle of the afternoon. The staff is very helpful if you want suggestions for wines. And the cashier stations are efficient. I also like that they ask to see photo ID if you pay with a credit card. Huge selection of wine all over the world from less than $10 to vintage wine over $100s.I often follow their recommendation and have never been disappointed. you can surely get nice bargain wine for daily dinner if you follow the advice from the knowledgeable staffs there. Amazing prices compared to downtown. They have a great selection of wines. I was pleasantly surprised to find my some of my favorite French wines here. A bottle of Beaujolias was 5.99 here and I just saw the same wine today for 14.95 in the West Village. I doubt you will find better prices anywhere in the city. Luckily, I work in Inwood so this shop is not out of the way for me.
