That I have to rate this place so poorly makes me sad because reviews on Yelp made me think it was going to be such a find. It's located on the corner of Linden and Broadway in an area surrounded by dog owners. Parking is available on the street and it usually isn't too hard to find a spot. When I took my puppy here, I noticed the room was very very warm and cluttered. Not the cleanest place I'd want to keep my dog. A lot of the merchandise looked like it hadn't been touched in a long time. (They also don't sell leashes. Any leashes at all.) They did have some cute hair clips though. The owner, this older lady, had three dogs running around inside. They didn't seem to like my puppy and kept barking and charging at her, despite the owner trying to call them off. I held her for the rest of my visit. I'd wanted to buy puppy a treat since I'd had a great experience with 3 Dogs in Pasadena. Approaching the food counter, I asked what was the difference between all the treats. The owner looked at me like I was a bit crazy and shrugged, telling me they're all pretty much the same with maybe a little difference, pointing out something with chicken and something with potato. Okay... I ended up picking out some chicken nugget-ish things. They were reasonably priced at under $4 for 3 pieces and she told me to microwave them for a few seconds to warm them up. I did this at home and noticed they got super hot inside with even just 6 seconds in the microwave. Be careful if you heat it, I shredded them by hand after heating so puppy wouldn't burn her tongue. I didn't get the sense that this lady was really that friendly. She acted a bit of a know-it-all and asked me a bunch of questions about what shots my dog has had, what brand I'm feeding her, if I'd gotten her spayed without seeming like she was just being friendly, more like she was trying to "teach" me what I should do. I didn't enjoy my visit here and I doubt I'll be back. read more

From the moment we walked in we loved it. We ordered some Labrador Lasagna and Pug Pot Pie. They brought out a stand with two bowls. The owner brought out a pitcher of water and filled his water bowl. She then came back with a plate of the food I ordered and used tongs to place it in his dog bowl. My goodness! That dog ate better than me! They offer some darn good coffee or tea for the owners, included in the price of food for your dog. The clothes are super cute. I bought a silver tone skull and crossbones to hang from Ponch's collar. He's a pug, he has to prove his toughness! My niece and I loved PJ's Pet Cafe. Ponch especially LOVED it! this is a really cute place. My mother heard about it on the radio (or something of the sort) and so we decided to check it out together. Being that it was our first time we decided against bringing our dogs, in the event that there were issues--plus we like to see a place first anyhow (well i do nonetheless, my mother is another story). We took in the brilliant window display and were greeted by BOTH of the owners upon fighting with the dogie gate that keeps the dogs in (or is it there to keep us out?). Anyhow, after figuring out the doggie gate, we made it in. The place was really quaint. There were two doggies playing and running around (did I mention the space was small). The owner said: bring your dogs, this is a place for dogs first, humans second. If that were the case I'd have a hard time imagining more than 4 dogs in this place at the same time without either (a) a dog fight due to restlessness or (b) someone like my mom tripping over a dog. Then again, that would make me laugh--no need to lie. Do visit: Do visit this place for cute little knock-knacks and fun enviro-toys for your pooch (and cat even). If you have the money to spend on upscale doggie items (including doggie strollers which I still don't quite get). And do visit if you are in the mood for a wide selection of custom made, fresh and natural doggie treats and food. Don't visit: Don't visit if you expect a petsmart. I get so pissed when uninformed, spoiled dog companions (you perhaps?) walk into custom shops like this and expect the wide selection that PetSmart has. WE ASBOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! we came here on saturday afternoon around 4pm and it was pretty empty, which suited us because we were expecting it to be packed. we were greeted and invited in by David (owner/manager, not sure) but he was really nice and he loved our two doggies Bear and Missy. as it was our first time here he explained the concept and we loved it, all the food baked and made there is 100% homemade, organic, no salt or sugar. all the food was good enough for human consumption, he even said that he has tried everything on the menu. the best thing was that the doggies were allowed to run free off leash and even allowed into the kitchen area. we ordered a platter which had 9 different types of goodies for our dogs, and they brought out silver bowls (on stands) where water and food was given to our doggies. as for us David was very accomodating and asked if we would like some complimentary drinks (lemondade, rasberry lemonade, cappucino and tea). he told us the story of PJ, which was sad and happy at the same time. the food was great, we took a bag to go and both of our doggies ate it up. we met the other owner too, very nice lady who makes all the food, she was a very busy lady but always made time to make sure we were doing ok. the food was great quality and prices were VERY reasonable for the kind of gourmet goods! the place is pretty small but homey, we are definitely coming back here soon! they also have doggie tailoring (for when ur doggie gains some weight and needs to have their clothes taken out :P) and also nail services, prices were very reasonable too! The owners will greet you at the door and make you feel right at home. The charming lady behind the counter showered my dog with treats - honestly she probably fed him more for free than we actually bought. We purchased a combo plate, which was very reasonably priced - a whole box of treats for less than 4 bucks! The box was beautifully decorated by hand, which was an adorable touch. It just further illustrates the tender quality of care that these people but into their business. The treats are incredibly fresh - so much so that they need to be refrigerated. I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is for dogs. The dog-loving city of Long Beach needs a place like this, so show some love and support this little gem!! I have been looking forward to coming to this place for a really long time. I've seen this place when I've driven through DT Long Beach and I've had a mental bookmark to come here to grab some treats for my mom's yorkie. Finally, while walking from DoLy's Bakery (Yum! on Long Beach and Broadway), my co-worker and I decided to go for a walk. Headed toward a boutique shop on Linden, I noticed that PJ's was right there and we HAD to stop by! I thought that PJ's was simply a pet bakery, but standing at the door, I realized that it was actually a hang out spot for doggies too. The only person there was an older woman, who I assume is the owner because she was in one of the pictures on the PJ's website. I would say that there were about 5-6 dogs there. Still standing at the door, we peeked our heads in and asked if they were open because it was dimly lit and there were two gates keeping anyone from coming in or out. The older lady, who was behind the treat counter sat there looking at us like we were trying to sell her something. I asked again, "May we come in? I'd like to see some of your treats." Still being unfriendly, she she opened the gate for us and let the two of us in. After giving us the once over, she asked, "Do you have dogs?" I'm not sure if she thought that we had mistaken this place for a Petco or Starbucks, but she was not nice at all, until I explained to her that I was looking for something for my mom's Yorkie. This was my first visit to a pet bakery and I was curious, so I asked her, "What is the difference about these treats?" because they all had names that sounded like human food and even resembled human food. i.e. The empanada. First she asked, "You give your dog human food?" I said "No." Then she says to me,"There's no difference. Just no spice." As though I were asking a ridiculous question. My co-worker picked out a liver something for her BF's dog and I opted for a bacon treat for my mom's Yorkie. The lady gave my co-worker instructions to heat up the liver treat in the microwave for 4-6 seconds before she gives it to her "Baby" she called the dog. It wasn't until we made a purchase and proved to her that we were legitimate patrons, that she seemed to even care about earning our business. I thought that was very unwelcoming and she made the visit so uncomfortable that I will not return to this "cafe." Oh, and my mom's Yorkie didn't like the bacon thing. I am always searching for new places to bring my pup and after reading all of the reviews I just had to check this place out. PJ's Pet Cafe is unlike any other dog store that I have been to. Rosanna, owner/operator, has such a love for dogs. Once we got there she gushed over my pup, gave him a billion kisses and tons of treats. She wants to make sure that all the dogs are comfortable and feel like they are at home once they come in. Merchandise - Doesn't look like the stuff has moved in a while. She does sell homemade treats and meals that she makes in the store. There is a wide variety of treats. My pup loves the Lolo Chicken Casserole. All of the treats and meals are very reasonably priced. Custom Doggy Tailoring - Rosanna will also custom make doggy stuff. I a custom harness made. We did have to go back 3 times to get my pup fitted but it was well worth it. The total cost of the harness was $20, which isn't bad. The selection of materials was very limited, so if you have something in mind bring it with you. Over all we love PJ's Pet Cafe. I love love looooove PJ's and Rossana (the caretaker). I have two babies, Frida (Chocolate Lab) Trotsky (Chinese Crested) This is an awesome shop. All of their food and treats are fresh and handmade. Best part is she does not use preservatives and is is all natural. Also, If your baby has allergies, she can custom make food to fit your dogs needs. All at veeery reasonable prices. She also offers doggy daycare, and let me tell you, I trust this woman blindly. She ADORES dogs, and the dogs she takes care of adore her too. She treats them as if they were her own. The owner was so sweet to our puppy when we came in to order his cake and you can tell she has a pure love for animals. She was gracious enough to write the ingredients of the cake on the box for us, so we could share that info with our guests. Cute little destination to take your pup! Our dog got the star treatment here when we stopped in this week. She was able to explore the whole store on her own (the doggy door was closed to be sure she didn't leave the store!) I believe all the treats/meals are made there in the store and they also offer accessories. We ordered the Ginger Pizza, and it looked delicious. Our pup was served just as Anita described and she enjoyed every bite. The owner was definitely friendly and knowledgeable about the ingredients in each treat. It was apparent how much she cares for animals. She also explained the additional services they provide like nail clipping, which is awesome. The other products (clothes, harnesses, toys etc.) weren't exactly my cup of tea when it comes to dog accessories, but my overall experience here pretty much overshadows that and I'm sure the selection will get better over time.
