I gave this place another try. I ordered through the new app "Slice". I would not recommend doing that ever! I waited an hour and a half for a pizza. I called the restaurant and they said it had left so I contacted Slice because it had been 45 minutes since I called the restaurant and was concerned my food would be cold by the time I got it. I will have to review that app in a different post! Of course my pizza was cold. It was riding around in the car for 45 minutes. Not only that, it was burnt, dry, cold. It was gross actually. I haven't been to PJ's in quite some time, but have liked their pizza in the past, and figured I'd give it another try. Ordered a large cheese pizza over the phone and was told that it would be ready in a half hour. Arrived about half an hour later, and the place was very busy. Waited about an additional half hour for the food. I slipped it into my pizza carry-bag and drove home - about 10 minutes later. Couldn't wait to dig in, but very disappointed to find a well-done and very dried out pizza. I don't believe at all that it just came out of the oven about 15 minutes earlier, but rather that it sat on top of it for about a half hour or longer and dried up. Got a pizza delivery to my hotel just across the street from SUNY Albany. Took about an hour from the time I ordered and the pizza was plenty hot. Delivery driver was friendly and the pizza itself, I would definitely order again. Delivery was free, but don't be a cheapo; tip well. Large pizzas are about 14 to 15 inches and expect to pay about a dollar per inch if you do one topper. Specialty pizzas are obviously higher in price. Overall, the pizza is definitely not a NY style pie, but is thicker and denser in crust. At the first glance it looks like a frozen pizza, but it does not at all taste like one. Lots and lots of cheese, so if you like lotsa cheese ona your pizza pie, you'll like there's. Toppings were a little sparse and could've used more to make me happier. The top could've also been crispier, though the pizza was not undercooked at all. This is just a pizza that is not being baked in a high, high temp oven. Sauce was right on, just a little sweet, but not Papa John's sweet. Overall, a good balance of flavors and textures. I liked the sausage quite a bit as it had a little fennel in there, which I love. The pepperoni was a bit too soggy for me and needs greater heat time to get truly crispy. I found the pizza to be even better the second time around after a few minutes at 400 degrees in my toaster oven. Overall, an enjoyable pizza, reasonably priced and definitely a pizza I can see myself ordering again. read more

Tonight I ordered 10 lemon pepper wings, an a large cheese pizza. It seemed like my pizza had to be made with the last piece of dough in the shop it was spread so thin. I've never quite seen anything like it. If a dutch baby, met a round tavern pie (like they serve at The Purple Pub, but without chopped onions in the sauce) you might get something like what's churned out daily at Albany's oldest pizzeria. This is a claim the shop makes, although I have yet to hear anyone refuting the assertion. Albany's oldest tavern is also in the same part of town, and it too is famous for a unique style of pizza. What gives with the north side of Albany and its non-traditional pizza production? Don't think for a second that this is New York Style pizza. It's not. And if you go to PJs looking for an upstate version of those downstate pies and slices, you are going to leave unhappy. But I'm of the mindset that pizza in all of it's weird and wonderful forms can be glorious. The most notable feature is the end crust, which doesn't just come to a thin edge, like the pies in Watervliet. This end crust is also turned up, creating a pie that's actually pie shaped. This shallow bowl of a pizza is great for toppings. I had high hopes for the signature white pie, but it was oddly dry. Perhaps if there were more sausage, or a heavy brushing of olive oil on the crust, this pizza could have been recommended. It would be hard to imagine that the pizza being served at PJs matches anyone's ideal for what pizza should be. That said, PJs makes a tasty pie, that should be tasted at least once and judged on its own merits. Cheese is fine, but I do think a pizza like this demands toppings. I was very happy with the mash up of Steve and Jerome's topping strategies, which puts sausage together with jalapeno peppers and bacon. But I wouldn't say not to another slice of onions, peppers, and mushroom, or the red-sauced based buffalo chicken. read more

It's probably been a decade since I had PJ's pizza last before tonight. Oh the memories of pepperoni and jalapeño peppers. Could it be as good/unique/special as I remember? Oh yes it can and it was. In my college years I never actually visited PJ's. Only delivery. No one in college ate from there because this is a locals joint through and through, but I had some friends who grew up in Albany and ordered from there a lot so I got a glimpse of the real Albany, which I'm thankful for. The shop is surprisingly cute on the inside. Very small. With a chalkboard wall that has the menu neatly written out on it. It's a Thursday night and they are full staffed and quite busy. Everyone is friendly and polite but hard at work. It's 25mins to get our pie and when we do it's fantastic. The buffalo chicken is different than most shops in the area. Very saucy - in a good way. Small chopped chicken tossed with the sauce, which I really liked. You get chicken in every bite! read more

Albany pizza... I don't mean that in a bad way. But if you've lived here for any length of time, you know the struggle. Lots of really uninspired pizza. Lots of pizza that can only be adequately described as "meh." And a couple of places that are pretty good. Thankfully, as far as Albany pizza goes, PJ's defies those common categories. I ordered a large half cheese/half pepperoni recently and really enjoyed it. The crust is on the thinner side (This is NOT thin crust pizza, though. I'm saying it's thin by comparison to our city's other, more legitimate pizzerias). Although the cheese was a bit oily, there weren't gobs of it. The sauce was less sweet than it seems is the norm around the city, something I was very much okay with. The crispy crust around the edges was really great. There is just something about the flavor that only pans that have been in and out of ovens for years can provide. We also tried the mozzarella sticks, which were nothing special. PJ's has super reasonable prices by comparison to many others. My only gripe is that the telephone line was busy for over twenty minutes when I called to place an order. I ended up just going to the shop, ordering, and waiting. Their service was prompt, though, as our food arrived after only a 15 minute wait. I look forward to returning to PJ's. read more

It's really hard to find good pizza in Albany and when you're really craving pizza it's tempting to settle for I Love NY or Madison's pizza b/c its close by. Some Albany folk told me about PJs a few weeks ago and we decided to get it for lunch, but I wasn't expecting much after the pizza I have had in this area. We drove down and ordered, but I have to say, sketchy sketchy neighborhood. Definitely will call for delivery next time. But we ordered and it was quick and when we got home our minds were blown... Great pizza. Don't know what it is, but so much better and more authentic than the crap around the colleges. They do close early though, I have tried to order since the first time I had it and have called kind of late (11ish) and both times it's been closed. I'm used to the convenience of the college pizza places being open late but I'll never settle for that pizza again just because its past 10pm! read more

As a rule, PJ's is the only pizza place we order from. One night we ordered Sovrano's as we wanted a Sicilian 24 cut. While Sovrano's has good pizza , I would have rather have had fewer slices of PJ's excellent pizza then the 24 cut good pizza. I will continue to order from PJ's, as no other compares.
