I have come to love this little shopping strip near my house with an intense and fiery passion. I have even come to love the awful Waldbaum's there. My love for this shopping strip began with going to Plaka for an excellent Greek meal on my 3rd or 4th night living in the neighborhood. I've been several times to dine in now and have even ordered delivery when I was feeling exceptionally lazy (I saw exceptionally because it's really about a 2 block walk) or when my daughter has been sick. Their half roast chicken is always moist and tender and really has a nice lemony flavor with a slight hint of garlic, rosemary and oregano on occasion. The potatoes that come with the chicken are also really good. Spinach pie is also excellent with slight hints of lemon, garlic and I think some nutmeg. All their cold appetizers are really good, but the tzatziki is definitely a stand-out, it's thick and nicely spiced with garlic.My daughter loves the penne ala vodka and has declared it the 2nd best in the world. She also really likes the lemon rice soup, especially when she's sick. All of their sandwiches are great, particularly the pork souvlaki and the gyro. The gyro meat is always tender with a nice edge of crispy and there's always lots of tzatziki sauce and onions. The lamb burger is also really good. It comes with feta cheese, onions and mushrooms and is absolutely huge. The first time my husband got it, it was literally big enough for us to share and we had gotten a whole meal. They always have fresh seafood and their salmon is nicely and simply done. I highly recommend getting the salmon steak if you like salmon. The baklawa is not a stand out to me but I love their greek yogurt with honey, walnuts and apricots although I wish they would put more honey and walnuts and apricots on top. read more

Came here with my parents, husband and grandmother. We were looking for a restaurant close by (we live in Jackson Heights) that had outdoor seating but was also big enough to fit all of us comfortably. We know that's a rarity in JH but I thought I'd check since there's been some new places popping up recently. And we LOVE Greek food - for a bunch of Russians we love us some Chicken Souvlaki and hummus. This place did not disappoint. All the previous reviews were really spot on, the food was great. Although, they didn't have a big enough table for all five of us to sit outside, indoor was perfectly suitable for our needs. All of us really enjoyed our meals, the service was great and the waitress was really patient with us ( we're loud Russian's, my mom is the pickiest eater and we're all very inpatient because we're always starving by the time we've packed everyone in the car to go out...) Anyway, I think this is going to be our new favorite place to celebrate birthdays/family get togethers. Also, since it's walking distance from my place I'll come back with my husband for a nice dinner - just the two of us ;-) read more

Just had dinner with my family. The place was packed on a Sunday evening. Good thing we made a reservation. The Greek salad was terrific and so were the gyro wraps and sandwiches. But the star of the night was the grilled squid which was cooked to perfection. Service was quick for a full house and our waitress was friendly. Moussaka was really tasty and fresh as was everything else we ordered - spinach pie, and several of the dip appetizers such as hummus and cucumber/yogurt. Even the side of lemon potatoes was scrumptious (I could be biased since I am practically married to potatoes). The eggplant dip was especially delish. Coffee was good, too. 3.5 would be a better rating. I've eaten there 2 times and would likely go back due to the convenience of parking and the fresh fish. The service is very good but can be slow if they have more than five tables at a time. There's usually only one waitress who is very sweet and does an amazing job when not overwhelmed. The grilled fish selection is usually the best choice, but beware they can run out. The restaurant is deceptively large on the inside, but can be dim and a little dated in terms of decor. No full bar here, but lots of great red house wine. The food is good, especially the fish as I've harped on, but the rest can be hit or miss. Lemon potatoes on one visit were spot on, the next visit, lukewarm and tired in flavor. The hummus was a little on the loose side, yet had good flavor. The fish was cooked perfectly, but under seasoned. A little more salt, lemon juice and perhaps a sprig of fresh thyme and it would have been perfection. I think a few modern updates and this restaurant could be well into the 4 star range. read more

By far the best Greek food in NYC! Anna is spectacular, the food fresh, reasonably priced and phenomenally delicious! The decor is quaint and welcoming, but the food is the real reason why you should patronize them. They treat you as if you were their own family. By far one of my favorite places to dine. Came here on a Thursday evening with a group of 9 people. This place was alright- not too many veggie options available. I ordered a vegetarian wrap stuffed with eggplant & zucchini. This is the best Greek place I've been too. My favorite side dish are the Lemon potatos and the Greek salad. The meat is so tender and well seasoned. Our server was very nice and polite. I was with 2 people and we really loved our food. I will definitely come back. One thing I think they should work on is there delivery because I go to Vaughn college and I decided to call for delivery since I had a great time when I was there. When I called they told me they don't deliver to 22-40 90th street which is only 7 min away by bike. I was trying to explain that to the guy on the phone but he didn't give me a chance. So I called again and tried to explain it again and this time a girl picked up and she said he already told you we don't deliver there. My room mate then told me to call and give them the school address instead of the residence hall address which is the same campus. So my friend called and gave them the 8601 flushing address and they delivered. This got me so angry and to top it off the girl messed up my order. I clearly asked her if my order came with a Greek salad and she said yes what size. I told her I thought it was one size but when my order came I got a Greek salad that came with my order and another Greek salad which I was charged for. I clearly asked her if it came with my order and she said yes. I felt like she did this on purpose. The delivery needs to get better on how they manage the addresses because if I really didn't want Greek food I wouldn't have Google mapped the distance and called again. You must be losing a lot of customers delivery for this reason. read more

This is a great place to eat. It's a family owned and run business where you're made to feel like one of the family. The food is so flavorful and cooked to perfection. The avgolemono soup is always a great starter. I had the chicken kabob wIth lemon potatoes. I've had different dishes in the the past, pork chops, steak and hamburger. I have never been so upset with service in my life. I ordered from them well over an hour ago and my food is not here. I called 3 times to see where it is and they tell me it's on the way.... REALLY? It's been on the way for the past 45 minutes? I don't even want it then because it will be cold by the time it's here. They gave me an estimated Delivery time and it is now a half an hour past that time!!! I was hoping to be able to eat dinner before I left for work but guess not! Guess I'll have to wait until the morning. Because of this joke of an establishment can't get their shit together, I now have to go hungry all night. Thank you for absolutely nothing. We had been planning to come to Plaka for dinner for quite a while. Before we had the chance to do so we had a death in the family and someone recommended that we meet with the owner Anna to discuss having friends & family go there for lunch after the funeral. The owners and staff could not have been more kind and attentive. The food was delicious, well prepared and they were able to plan for an uncertain number of guests seamlessly. Within a month we had a second loss and would not consider going anywhere else for the luncheon. Again, perfection! Looking forward to returning soon for a joyous occasion. If I can give this place 10 stars, I would. Love, love love this place. Located in a mini shopping mall, next to Canelle. I will review that later, but go there another day, or after your amazing meal at Plaka. I had practically everything one the menu, and nothing is bad. Family owned, this is one hidden gem. Staff consists of the family members, so service is fast, impeccable, friendly. I have been coming here for years, and the food is consistently amazing. One of my favorite dish is the Octopodi Skaras. For those that don't know, it's grilled octopus. Simply grilled, served with red onions and lemon. That's all you need. The falafel is absolutely unbelievable. I can't not get enough of these deliciousness. I eating so many falafel from just about everywhere. So simply, yet so much flavor. Not greasy at all. I'm such a fatty, I ordered some to go all the time. The shrimp marechiara is another favorite. Big jumbo shrimp, probably size 12 with perfectly cooked pasta with rich yet balanced marinara sauce. Or you can try the shrimp Plaka is the same, but served over ouzo with feta. The bifteki is seasoned well, with grilled onions and mushroom. It's a greek style hamburger. (little secret, I order one to go and use it as a base for my chili at home, no lie). Its awesome sauce. The Mousaka and Pastichio are pretty decent, I 'll be honest, I rarely get these, only when we're in large groups. if you like chicken, the grilled chicken is juicy not dry at all. So many places can't even execute this simply cooking standard. Oh, if your feeling like dessert, yum yum. Made fresh daily, in house. (word is the owner makes in daily early in the day.) Walnut cake, sure, some now, some for home. The only way I know how to say it, "Got a booty call". It's a greek pastry that is not to be missed. Ask for it that way, they will know what you're asking for. O.K., O.K. it's really galaktoboureko. It's a custard dessert. Don't make a mistake by not bringing any home. read more

I was really looking forward to the fried calamari based off these photos, but mine was chewy and mushy. No crisp whatsoever. The bifteki tasted good but came in a puddle of its own grease and juices. Disgusting way to serve burger meat and veggies, they should have let it rest/drain before tossing it in the container. Well I've been here about five times and have never been disappointed. I had the Branzini fish grilled Deboned excellent their salad great. lemon potatoes excellent chicken kebab amazing tender like butter. The dessert baklava The largest piece I've ever had served we split it and it was unbelievably good. The Greek wine so delicious I can't say how happy we were when we left. We visited first on the recommendation of a neighbor who orders take-out from Plaka regularly. We ordered the octopus, a mixed appetizer plate, grilled calamari, and a greek salad to share. Everything was delicious, including the house white wine and the complimentary walnut cake. We took some of the appetizers and calamari home because the portions were pretty big. We went back last week and had another very nice meal: this time we ordered one of the whole black bass grilled, salad and appetizers. Everything tastes fresh and the servers have been friendly. There were a ton of things I could have had, but it was hot out so I stuck with an enormous and delicious greek salad with gyro meat on top. Only regret was that I didn't finish the delicious meat! The warm pitas were great with flavored olive oil and balsamic. My friend had enormous grilled calamari and said they were perfect. I also got a side of the lemon potatoes which were great. Could have used a few more minutes cooking, but only because I like them a little brown. Also, drank the house Greek white wine, which was refreshing and good, and I am a wine snob. Very large and tasty gyro. Great taziki. The Taramosalata was underwhelming. The large greek salad was also pretty plain.
