Me and my friend went here yesterday, I'm not a planet fitness member but I came with her to try to help her build a workout routine. When we walked in I was assuming day passes were only $5, that would make sense for people trying out the gym. But the chubby Mexican worker at the front desk rudely stated it was $20 which is even more than the monthly membership, and then he clearly made a point that I couldn't step on the gym grounds without the guest pass. I reluctantly paid the $20 so I could help my friend, but man that was an absolute ripoff. Me and my friend used the machines and they were just okay, the grips were too fat where they were uncomfortable. The machines were also not 100% my type, but overall they were solid and can def be good for beginners. When me and my friend were using the chest press, a minimum wage worker that prob makes $15 an hour to spray the machines came up to us and said that we couldn't have our bag on the floor and we had to put the bag in a locker, which I thought was ridiculous. It seemed like the chubby Mexican guy made him go over to us like the message was coming from him. First the $20 guest pass ripoff and now you're going to complain about our bags being on the floor?!?! And now the rude staff is watching us?? Come on bro, sounds like a true "judgement free zone" lol. No critics?!?! More like no critics for the rude staff and ripoff prices. I see why beginners come here and it's not the worst option, but if you have personal honor and a good work ethic there's better gyms to go to! read more

I am writing to file a complaint regarding the behavior of the manager at your gym. My son is enrolled at your gym. Sometimes I am unable to take him, so my wife brings him instead. She does not use the gym or participate in any activities. She simply sits in a chair near the entrance and waits while our son is in his class. On one occasion, the manager approached my wife and told her to leave the gym. When I asked why, she said it was the gym's policy. I politely asked her to show me the policy, but she was unable to provide one. The situation then became very unprofessional. The manager was rude, disrespectful, and used inappropriate language. When I told her that I intended to report the incident, she responded by saying that she was the store manager and that no one could do anything to her. She then told us to "get the fuck out." When I said I would leave a review, she replied, "Do whatever you want. I don't care." This behavior is completely unacceptable from someone in a management position. I also felt that we were treated unfairly and believe discrimination may have played a role in how we were treated. I respectfully ask that this incident be investigated. Your customers deserve to be treated with respect, professionalism, and courtesy. It's not a bad place, it's pretty clean, at least out in the open area. There is a toilet in ladies room that has had the same feces stain on it. For over a month, even though I said something about two weeks ago about it. The staff is friendly but very inexperienced. If they aren't refilling the spray bottles, then they are standing behind the counter, either chatting or sitting on their phones. I've had many, many years experience with this brand and they don't do what I came to expect years ago. They don't walk around engaging with people, making sure they're using the machines properly. Now that it's summer and teenagers go for free.Most of them are okay, but today we had four young men who thought it was a playground. This PF is going through an extensive upgrade, which will be nice, but I wish they could upgrade the clients. Whether there's 5 people or 50 in the gym, the one piece you want to concentrate on has some slack-jaw scrolling and texting for 5 minutes between sets. Finally, after 20 minutes watching a young guy doing occasional lightweight one-arm flyes on the fly machine, "Hi, you done soon?' (Looks up from fascinating phone, pulls earbud) "Huh?" "Done soon?" 4 stars for Planet Fitness Des Plaines. If I did this review a few weeks ago they would have received 3, but they really stepped up their game as far as cleaning goes. It's a very basic gym, it has the basic, minimum amenities that a fitness center should have, weights, stretching areas, weight machines and cardio machines like bikes elliptical etc. Don't expect a pool or sauna if you're considering signing up for a membership here, The workers are friendly and do a good job of keeping the place clean and paper towels stocked, as well as keeping the locker rooms clean. I have to say for the most part, the guests do their part as well keeping it clean. I only subtract a star because I wish they had more machines - there's only one of certain ones and you'll have to wait a while if someone is taking their time using it. I signed up with Planet Fitness in September and they were supposedly have a promotion for new members. First of all I didn't visit PF at all in the 2 months I was signed up. I felt like I was being overcharged. Because the promotion said that startup membership would be $25 monthly.. in October I was charged $49 for the years membership. That was taken out October 3 .. then on October 17 they charged me again.. $25.05. I finally cancelled my membership because I felt I was being overcharged. If you wanted me to pay for the year.. why not have taken the money out September 2026 rather than that would be one year after signup.. Is people who signup also had this happen? Or you just gave them your bank information and you don't look at your statements?? Plus I signed up for the black card.. but my guest has to be with me when I go inside. Had I known all this from the beginning.. I wouldn't have signed up to be a member.. No refund?? No! Yall a mathafucker.. I tried to cancel over the phone but the associate told me I have to go to the store that I signed up at.. Nobody would help.. and I'm not happy I wasted $25 per month plus the yearly $49 smh ‍ I think yall scamming your members!! I have this new thing I decided I'm going to do...try different Planet Fitness locations around Chicagoland and search for the best one! This Des Plaines location has been around for a while (at least way longer than my home Logan Square one) but it's in surprisingly good shape. As with other PFs, it's 24 hours. Tons of free parking. Locker room looked to be clean and in good shape from what I saw of it. It did have a funky smell on my last visit though. I think the whole gym could use a nice, deep cleaning & freshening up. Everything is all spread out on one floor in this large location. One thing I don't like about the design of this location is that the 30 min & 12 min ab circuits are set up in front of a bunch of machines. I feel self-conscious when working out and don't like that everyone on the cardio machines can watch me doing the circuits. I'll pass on getting those done at this location. They did seem to have more machines overall than my usual location and definitely more weights. They also had more foot traffic & people working though. All machines were in great working condition and it was clear they pay attention to maintenance here. I checked out their tanning, you know, for research purposes. Now this location has a unique Black Card Perk - Unlimited Total Body Enhancement. WTF is that, I wondered? I had to check it out. It's apparently an all-natural red and infrared light therapy treatment. At some point I'll try this out and let y'all know. Another unique thing about this gym (at least it's very different than my LS location), is they offer classes! That's so awesome. You can find the schedule online. It looks like just one guy does all the classes so times & what is done changes. Then my favorite perk of being a Black Card member, use of the massage chairs. There is nothing better after a workout than getting my muscles massaged. The only weird thing was in the first 15 minutes I was there on my first visit, one of the workers did 5 slow circles around the gym. It seemed a bit unnecessary and was a bit uncomfortable, I just was hoping he would quickly stop! And he did after 15 minutes so all was well, but it was a bit odd. The latest time in though I didn't experience any of that and the person working the front desk was friendly without being intrusive. Overall, I like this location. It works really well for me to drive half the way to work to beat some commuter traffic in the morning, then drive the rest of the way in. read more

This gym is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking. It's open 24/7. I like that they have an app on my phone that I can use to check in vs fumbling around and looking for my gym key card. There are plenty of cardio machines from treadmills to a stepper machine. The place is pretty clean and the staff here are friendly when you enter and leave. There are cleaning stations around the workout areas with enough paper towels and cleaning bottles to wipe down your machine, no excuses clean off your sweat. The crowd here is a mixture of ages when you come and workout. It does get busy at peak times like after 5pm. Their locker rooms are spacious and you need to bring your own lock or buy one from them. Also you need to bring your own towel, no they do not provide that for you, that's an amenity. They do have scheduled group classes just keep an eye on the website or app or when you go to the gym they have a wipe board of the schedule for the week. Comparing to my other gym, I wish that the cardio machines had their own personal TV to watch versus watching whatever they have on display on their own TVs across the cardio area. They have free WiFi which is good. They have drinks on sale from protein shakes to bottle water. They keep up with fixing their machines and I like their 30 minutes interval training station and the 12 minutes abs station that has a stop like in both area to time you when to start and stop at each work station. This is good especially when you are short on time. Their weight stations there is no olympian weight plates, no bodybuilders here, no grunting loudly, no string tank tops, etc. After working out there's really no rest/lounge area like some other gyms have. You workout and leave. They have two types of memberships a standard membership for that location only or upgrade to the black card membership to use other amenities like tanning and discounts for drinks. There is a yearly $39 addition payment on top of your monthly payment. They deduct this off your bank account. We weren't able to use a credit card so no points building. For the affordable price you pay, you don't have a swimming pool, a sauna, basketball courts, or a protein bar. Overall it's a nice gym, modern machines, clean, spacious and plenty of parking, no excuses just go and do your job sweating and be done and enjoy the rest of your day. read more

I would normally give this place 4 stars, but one huge issue as of late I have to bring up. That is they aren't enforcing masks despite their pledge to do so. I know working out with a mask sucks, but it's manageable, but all I see is masks when they open the door to come in, and that's it. I've been to this location a lot over the years, and they are still groups of bros who workout together hovering around an area with no masks touching tons of equipment. I know many don't wipe down properly afterwards, and honestly I have lost any interest in going despite needing a workout due to my safety. Even with my mask on, I know the risk of getting exposed is still notable by others without a mask. I can't risk getting it and spreading it to vulnerable family members, and until I see everyone wearing masks when indoors, then I won't be back anytime soon. You can say I am being paranoid, but the one pattern of this virus spreading is indoors in close quarters. Even with restrictions on capacity, it still gets a little crowded around the weight machines. I hope maybe this review will force them to implement the rules, and I know the staff can only do so much, but all it takes is one infected person coming with people not wearing masks to spread like crazy. read more

This gym will not accept a negative PCR test document for access yet they will accept a card that does not guarantee the member is covid negative. Due to medical reasons, I cannot receive the vaccination yet I'm tested once a week to perform my job and continue to do so. The fact that they dont recognize a negative PCR document astounds me . I will be cancelling my membership and will go elsewhere. This place is ridiculous. funny you wont let me in to work out but I have to go in to sign a document to cancel my membership. I'm posting this purely on my first visit since I signed up online. I was expecting more than a guy to give me my card and take my picture. I was expecting at least a tour of the facility. What I appreciate most about this gym is that the staff clearly cares about the gym. The facility is always very clean, the staff is friendly, and the trainers seem to be very well liked. The equipment is all updated and in good shape, and there's a good amount of every machine. I hardly ever have to wait to use a machine, even during peak hours. If you're looking for cardio machines there are plenty. Unfortunately there are no time limit rules to prevent people from tying up a machine for 15 or 30 minutes. That's ridiculous. I have had one incident where someone stood over me after telling me i could not have anything on the machines. While i respect club rules, the situation was handled improperly and for this reason i am giving this review. Most of the staff have been attentive and really kind, laid back. I recently signed up at this location because is close to my house and it's open 24 hours. I've become a regular guest. I try to come everyday but with my hectic work schedule it can be hard sometimes. However the staff does a great job in maintains this location clean. All the spray cleaning bottles are always full and there are enough towels all the time. I would love to give it 5 stars but I do have one complain. They could use and upgrade on their exercise machines. They seemed to be a bit tired. Like the saying says wear and tear. This machines have honestly seen their best days. Hopefully they upgrade the machines quicker. Either way the gym itself is good. I'll be coming back over and over until I reach my desired goals. read more

If I can give less than 1 star I would! I spoke with Troy from the Des Plaines location. I was a potential new client and his disrespect and disregard towards me was very apparent. Today, Dec 30, 2019 at 5:30pm CT, I called and asked a simple question about group classes. He would not answer my question. Instead, he proceeded to respond to a question I had not asked. Again, I repeated my question 2 more times and again, Troy responded the same way as he had the first. Very rude, disrespectful and ignorant. The Des Plaines location must be doing so well that they can afford to be rude and ugly. Good to know! I will make sure EVERYONE knows that the Des Plaines office can afford to turn away new clients. read more

DO NOT JOIN PLANET FITNESS IF YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT I have been a Planet Fitness member in Des Plaines a little less than a year. Because I am a former nationally ranked competitive athlete, I designed a series of exercises for myself which are specialized for my sport and really helped speed up my weight loss. Late one evening, I was working on my exercises that included marching movements on the elliptical machine. Out of the blue, the assistant manager on duty came up to me and said he was cancelling my membership because I was using the elliptical in an unconventional fashion. I went to the gym the next morning to complain to the manager, and I pointed out that there were very few people at the gym the previous night and I was not near the four or five people that were at gym. Therefore, safety was not an issue. However, she upheld the cancellation anyway and therefore I was not allowed to go to any Planet Fitness to do my daily workout. This manager has been cancelling memberships left-and-right for trivial reasons, and she calls them policy violations. She actually boasts about how many memberships she has canceled and she would say, "I have the power to cancel anybody's membership. Nothing can ever get me in trouble with my boss." She would also say, "I do not care how many members we acquire or we cancel, because I get paid either way." I was very upset that the manager canceled my membership. Whenever she asked me to do something or stop doing something, I would do so immediately. She even asked me to stay very late into the night, because she was afraid to be by herself during her overnight shifts. When I worked out at the other franchise locations, I never had problems with management or any of the people that were there and nobody felt there was a safety issue. I have lost 50 pounds in the last 5 months because of my special cardio and strength training exercises. Any other gym would celebrate my extraordinary weight loss in such a short period of time. Apparently Planet Fitness's business model does not include any kind of success. They just want to collect their monthly fees year after year with total disregard for their members. I did not see a single person lose weight during the time I was at the Planet Fitness in Des Plaines; I was the only person that achieved a significant weight loss. This review is based on my first 10 visits there. I will update this review if necessary. Staff: No problems so far! The staff is usually friendly and they do a good job of keeping the workout areas and locker rooms clean. They don't up sell and they are always courteous. Atmosphere: Planet Fitness has a culture that discourages Body Builders and Gym bunnies. This place is not for you if like to show off your toned or muscle bound body. Read the rules and decide if this place is for you. I hate the purple and yellow layout. So 80's cheesy haha. Equipment: You will never have to wait on a Cardio machine ever! I have also never seen a broken or decrepit looking machine in the place. Ton of weight machines and abdominal stations. A big negative is the clear lack of free weights, barbells, and benches. This gym is clearly catered toward people looking to lose weight or get fit without being "gymtimidated." Meaning if you want to build lots of mass through the bench press, deadlift, or squats. This place is not for you. Also women have to take caution to what they wear. No gym bunny attire pretty much. I personally am enjoying my membership so far. Can't beat $10 a month with the wallet friendly member fees. Gym is clean and well taken care of with little distractions and plenty of space. This gym has all I need without the annoying distractions such as upselling or loud noises like other gyms. And it is 24 hours! read more

Now I did not become a member here. So this is not a members point of view. This also happened about a year ago. End of 2014. BUT My girlfriend and I walked into this location to possibly join this gym. No one stopped to help us at all. We finally had to find someone to ask about the gym. No one answered any of our questions. They tossed us some paper work and started talking to each other about the weekend and such. Really made us mad so we walked out and left. If that is how possible customers are treated, I can only assume members are treated in a similar fashion. Only good thing was the place looked clean. read more

This gym is decent. It is for casual gym goers. If it wasn't of their extremely low prices I probably would've taken my business elsewhere. I pay for the black card benefits but since I usually don't bring anyone I feel those benefits aren't worth it. I would have rather paid for the white card membership but for now I am stuck in a contract. There are a lot of cardio machines. There are a lot of weight lifting machines. There are no squat racks or actual free weight benches. Instead you have to either use the smith machine which is inferior to free weights or use actual machines which again doesn't have the same benefits free weights does. There is however dumbbells but only go up to 60 which to me is a problem. If the dumbbells were at least up to 100 that would be good. The mens bathroom/locker room is decent. Some times it will have this stank that does not go away for a couple days and other times it'll be clean. Generally though the gym is pretty clean and well maintained. You will see staff clean the machines and you will usually see other gym goers clean the machines they have just used. Overall if you just started to hit the gym, just wanted to use the cardio machines, or don't feel like spending a lot of money to go to a gym I would say that PF is a place to go. After spending a lot of time at this gym I have realized that this is not the gym for me because it does not provide the equipment for my needs. If you really want to make some serious gains with your lifts I would say go to another gym that actually provides free weights but you probably already knew that. read more

Well, it's now been nearly a year since I submitted my cancellation to Planet Fitness and only in the last week has my cancellation been processed. Initially I followed their procedure and filled out their 2 part form in person, as well as submitted a cancellation request in person. Kept getting billed...for months. It was only when I had to close my credit card due to fraudulent activity that they could no longer charge me. In the meantime, I called and spoke to the manager three times last summer and fall, who assured me he'd cancel my membership. Then PF Corporate reached out to me, offering to help, after they saw my negative previous Yelp review. They were no help at all, even though I sent them copies of my cancellation request. I received a bill in December and January of 2016 as they continued to attempt to charge me for monthly dues. Ridiculous! Finally last week I had my attorney's office contact their Corporate office and suddenly they processed my cancellation. I'm STILL trying to get a refund on the months my credit card was charged, even had to provide them with copies of my credit card statements and I doubt I'll ever see a refund. read more

I'm more of a seasonal gym goer and signed up for this place for about 6 months. Never having used a Planet Fitness before, I was very happy with my time here. I did my research and knew this place didn't have all the bells and whistles and catered to the more timid/meek gym population. Having that in mind, this place met all my needs. If you come in here wanting to bro it out and show off, this is not the place for you. It's nice to go to a gym and not have people constantly sizing you up and staring at you. I would say I'm not new to the gym scene either, but I did really like the vibe they go for. Lots of TVs, you can plug into them through your machine, Free wifi, lots of free weights. There was always a treadmill available or elliptical even around 4p-6p... The busier time. A few mild cons I came across, but not major enough for my taste... Maybe yours?: - not a lot of water fountains - Very limited mat space for abs/stretching - people taking there shoes off next to you in this intimate mat space, not cool - you need to have your own lock for the lockers, fine by me, but one day I literally opened like 10 lockers trying to find a vacant one; apparently everyone wants to get there shit stolen - the TVs are placed too high. I felt like it wasn't the best for my neck... - no stairmaster There you have it. I'd say you can spare $10 a month for your health and you should consider! read more

PROs: Inexpensive, Clean establishment, Helpful staff, Clean locker rooms & bathroom, Judgement free CONs: Can get crowded during peak hours I personally have the black membership card so I can go to several PF locations, use all features, and most of all bring a guest. $20/month still isn't so bad as opposed to paying full price at other gyms. The place is very well maintained and clean. Unlike some gyms, I come here to workout, not stand around, show off, and meet people. It won't be a good idea if you are planning on building muscles, they don't even have a bench press there, the max weight on the bars is 60 pounds. I joined this gym 6 days ago. I haven't been to a gym in about 5 years, so I was looking to get back into shape. Previously, I was a member of Xsport in Arlington Heights (South). My problems with Xsport were the treadmills were often crowded and the locker room was absolutely disgusting. They have a great selection of free weights and machines, though. Planet Fitness is huge on the inside and caters to the casual fitness fanatic, noobs like me, and "normal" looking people. There are a TON of treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals. The free weight selection is very, very limited. There are a decent amount of machines. Even between 4p and 8p, it's never super crowded. It's open 24 hours a day. And the locker room is pretty clean. Way better than Xsport. The staff is super friendly. I'm almost taken aback by how often they say hi and bye to me. The Xsport staff is barely present. I haven't been pressured at all to do any personal trainer nonsense either. So, I highly recommend this gym to the casual and new gym goer. I forgot to mention---only $10 a month with no contract. That's awesome! Can't beat that deal. You may eventually outgrow it as the free weight selection is nonexistent (no bench, no squat, very few dumbbells) and they need a few more machines (back extension, more bicep, tricep, incline and decline press, etc). read more

Just joined this place, getting back in the gym after a loooooong time off. Price seemed right, so I took a stab. Glad I did. Went for the $20 "Black card" vs. the $10 per month "white card." Black card includes the extras of free tanning, some "red light" thing, massage chairs, plus you can bring a guest and use any of their locations. The good- The place is clean, bright, and new equipment. Staff is uber-friendly! Everybody seems genuinely nice, but Amanda and Katie really stand out-super nice!! I give it 5 stars based on this!! I mentioned it would be nice to have a shelf in shower, bam next time I'm in there they are. Sweet! TVs are great for watching while you are on the bikes, treadmill, and the like. The not so good- No pool or steam room. No stairmaster. "Personal trainer" they have...meh, not so great. Haven't partaken of their pizza night or bagel morning yet, but I am sure I will one of these days. Great price, clean facility where everything works, pretty smart! read more
