The homemade corn tortillas were fresh and flavorful, and the adobada was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and packed with flavor. I also tried the carne asada tacos, which were good but definitely overshadowed by the adobada. Each taco came topped with onions, cilantro, guacamole, and salsa. Just a heads-up--the salsa packs some serious heat! Overall, this place completely lived up to the hype. If you're in the area and don't mind waiting in line, it's absolutely worth it.

Creative tacos done right. I love the beef birria at this spot. Add some of their citrus habanero sauce and it's perfect. Nachos are legit as well. I was also considering El Coco for outings with colleagues, so this seemed like a good opportunity to test the waters. Spoiler alert: The waters were troubled. Despite arriving with time to spare, I was seated and essentially forgotten until about 10 minutes before happy hour ended. I ordered everything at once to make the cutoff. First up, the empanadas. They arrived in little bags, though the presentation wasn't quite as cute as I'd seen online. No biggie. One, which I believe was the pepperoni, was genuinely good. The others? Edible. I was starving, so we made it work. Then came the elote. Baby, WHAT was happening with that corn?! The bottom of the cob looked visibly spoiled. I flagged it, and the waiter brought another. The replacement was slightly better but still far from fresh. When I raised the issue again, I was told, "That's how they all are." Respectfully, if that's how they all are, perhaps we shouldn't be serving elote today. I sent it back and ordered the happy-hour chicken and steak tacos instead. The chicken taco came with browning limes, while the steak taco featured an avocado slice that was clearly past its prime. The tacos themselves? Uninspired, flavorless, and filled with tough, dry meat. Just... why? To add insult to injury, the check arrived with the tacos charged at full price. I explained that I'd ordered them as a replacement for the unacceptable corn, which was on the happy-hour menu. No adjustment was offered. I paid and kept it moving. Now, let's talk about the service. The staff weren't rude or unfriendly. The issue was how poorly multiple situations were handled. I had to ask for my table to be wiped down with a clean cloth because the one they initially tried to use had just been used to wipe something on the floor. Excuse me?! That's a sanitation concern. And just when I thought we'd reached the end of the chaos... As I was paying, I heard a loud noise and looked over to see another guest's designer bag covered in hot sauce. A communal glass hot sauce bottle had exploded on her table. The staff barely provided napkins, offered little apology, and didn't appear to check whether anyone had been injured by the glass. I also didn't see any meaningful attempt to make things right. I have no idea what caused the explosion, but after the corn and cleaning-cloth situations, it certainly didn't inspire confidence. The lemon drop was cool, but the passion fruit martini itself was genuinely delicious! Unfortunately, even the drinks came with drama. The passion fruit martini was supposed to come with a shot of Prosecco, which never arrived. After waiting, I had to ask for it. When it finally came, I tasted the shot separately, as I normally do with a pornstar martini, and baby... why did it taste like light beer?! I've had my fair share of Prosecco, and whatever was in that glass didn't taste like any Prosecco I've encountered. I can't tell you what it actually was, but I was too over the experience to investigate further. At that point, I just wanted to finish my drink and make it to the game. My final word: My ultimate test is whether I'd order something again or return to the establishment. El Coco? Not for a meal, and definitely not for the colleague happy hours I had in mind. If I found myself back here, I'd head straight to the bar during happy hour, order that passion fruit martini, perhaps grab the pepperoni empanada, and call it a day. The cocktails are about half off during happy hour, and frankly, that's what makes them worth it. But don't travel here specifically for them. If you're already in the area? Sure. Otherwise, there are plenty of other options. Honestly, I should've left when the Restaurant Week menu wasn't available and eaten at the arena instead. You live and you learn.
