I know everyone says this but, yep here I am, reviewing Planned Parenthood, in Burbank...
Everyone that has ever met me would agree that I'm a pretty open book, but normally I wouldn't go posting my medical business all over the inter webs. After my horrible experience with my Para guard Copper IUD and my wonderful experience with Planned Parenthood Burbank though, I felt this had to be shared.
So here are some tips from yours truly about Planned Parenthood and just life in general....
1) Make an appointment (And preferably call to do it in some cases)
I was impressed that I could call and make an appointment on a Thursday and have an appointment setup as soon as the following Monday. (In NYC I had to wait almost a month for an appointment)
Also its better to call to make your appointment in some cases. I originally tried to book my appointment on line, but received a denied message with little to no info as to why I couldn't book my appointment. As it turns out, IUD removal isn't done on Saturdays at this location, so that is why my appointment wasn't going though.
****I booked my appointment for 12:50 PM on a Monday, and left at 3:00 PM. It wasn't busy when I showed up but by 3:00 PM it had definitely picked up a bit.****
2) Expect to spend at least 2 hours there. (Don't go on your lunch break silly!)
Since IUD removal can leave you in pain, my boyfriend insisted on bringing me to and from my appointment. After wards he told me about a girl that had actually come in on her lunch break, expecting to be seen right away harassing the window folks.
So ladies and fellas, do us all a favor and don't be that spoiled brat . Yes, this is free health care, and considering you're getting something could normally cost almost $500-$1000 + (At least I know my visit should have been around that) you can wait 2-3 hours. Which brings me to my next point...
3) Two hours didn't feel like two hours! This is located at a pretty convenient location.
They have a nice flat screen TV, a subway nearby and even a alittle spa next store if you visit was too stressful, not sure how much it is, but it didn't seem too expensive. There is also a nearby records store and an auto shop in case you want to have someone check out whats under your cars hood while you get whats under your hood checked out too.
I definitely did not feel the 2 hours I was there, total. Note though for the guys, the TV channel was set to shows more geared towards woman.
It made for good General Hospital poking fun of though. Yes, we were those people.
4) Friendly staff, and I loved my doctor!
I immediately trusted my doctor, which was awesome. I forgot her name, and I will definitely update this as soon as I find it out again. Best doctor I've had in a long time. I barely noticed the pain of my IUD removal.
5) IUD's aren't for everyone. ( I know this might have nothing to do with Planned Parenthood, but I noticed that they push for IUD's alot, so I felt this is something I should add )
I had the Para guard IUD put into me about 2 years ago, and it has been a slow and steady decline for my health. While Para guard IUD has no hormones since its copper there is a little thing called copper poisoning. Granted you can counter act the copper by taking zinc daily, but by the time I found this out I had already gotten too sick to want to deal with my IUD anymore. Here are some more sites on this :

There are tons of ladies out there reporting weight gain, depression, harsh periods, anxiety and heart palpitations.
At first I thought the weight gain, stress and anxiety were just from moving cross country. However, ladies this was no mere 5-10 vanity pounds...... I'm almost embarrassed to admit this but I gained 40 lbs. It wasn't until I was told by a doctor that my 40 pound weight gain, in the amount of time that I gained it was not normal. I also started to have heart palpitations in the past month. That was the finial straw for me. I went through four days in the past month where I felt like I was having a heart attack and was about to die.
Good news though. My IUD has been out less then 24 hours and already I have people telling me that my swelling has gone down. My eyes even look a different color. My poisoning must have been bad.
Overall I thank Planned Parenthood for helping me remove a birth control method that clearly wasn't working and gave me options for a better one more suited for me. All for free! I donated $50, which I felt was well under what I normally would have paid. I'm so happy that I have my life back, a new (and free!) method of birth control (pills) and my bf and I can afford to eat this week. This is such an amazing organization and I whole heartily thank this location for making what could have been an unpleasant visit a pleasant one read more
