I can only assume that my experience only happened because I'm a white guy and the barber (only guy there) assumed some immediate form of kinship. I mean, in that regard, he's a nice dude.... In the span of my wait and haircut, he joked about covid, was a bit mysoginist, called somebody retarded for acting strange, and openly communicated that he thinks all homeless people are lazy and that most mental health concerns and addiction is self-inflicted. He did happen to have a number of loyal customers and he knew them all in detail. I think that's pretty cool, but far too many lines were crossed. I give the actual haircut a 6/10 read more

He has been there a few times and it was always still on the verge of OK, but today really was the final straw. He looked like a monk! I've been going to Plano Barbers for 31 years now (yes, I guess that makes me an "old fart"), and I have to say that this is truly what you would consider an "old school" barber shop. If you want a great haircut, at a good price, along with some good conversation, this is where you want to go. Randy is a down to earth, great guy. He takes an interest in you and your family, and you really get to know him, as much as he likes to get to know you. I've been having James cut my hair for the last 7 years or so. His shop is what it's named...a barber shop. I don't need anything fancy done to my hair, I just sit down, let him cut and enjoy the conversations. Don't expect recommendations about conditioner or styling gel... Big hint - always call in advance and get an appointment. If he's got you down for a certain time, he'll bypass walk-ins so that he's meeting his commitment. If you walk in, you may find yourself watching people stroll in who have an appointment and be served while you wait for a gap to be worked in. About James - he can be kind of gruff but it's more that he's totally honest about what he thinks. You may agree, you may disagree, but he's straight forward about his point of view. It's a step back in time. Sorta like Floyd's in Mayberry but with some good swearing. I have been going to this institution since I moved to Dallas a couple of years ago and not just for a decent haircut. You want to know what is going on in politics, with the economy, Cowboy's football or if there is life on Mars? This is the place. The two brothers who run Plano Barbers are nothing short of cowboy poets with sheers. Sure there is a wait on Saturday mornings. But pull up a chair, pretend to read Maxum magazine, and tune in to the best opinionated gossip and smack anywhere. If a woman does happen to wander in with some kids, they do manage the expletives. I tried Plano barbers after reading the reviews. While the service was friendly I was not very impressed with the cut. I was hopeful as this place had the feel of a "real" barber shop. However upon entering the seat I was quickly disappointed. I get a simple cut using the mechanical clippers. I felt like I was a sheep being sheared. The gentleman was very rough. My husband has been going to James for 6 or 7 years now, and we've been taking my sons for the last 3. I won't take them anywhere else. They are 5 and 2 years old. James has a way with kids - bribe them with a sucker but be stern and firm the rest of the time. I'm okay with a little bribery if it works as well as this has. I can't speak to the quality of cuts that the former barber Randy used to give because we never used him. We've only ever been to James, and he does a great job. I will say to anyone who goes home with an unsatisfactory cut that what you get out of James or any barber is what you ask of him. If you don't explain what you want well enough or point something out that you don't like, he can't fix it. On the other hand, I've always been able to get good cuts on both boys who have very different thicknesses and types of hair. And these are squirmy little kids. Furthermore, when my husband comes home with something I'm not fond of, it's because he likes it that way and that's what he asked for. I've never heard James make any derogatory comments regarding anyone of any race and if memory serves, he's included everyone in his fun stories in a good way. I asked this guy for two specific and simple things. To cut my hair with a number 2 clipper and to make a straight line around my head. He did neither. He cut it with a number 1 and cut a straight line as well as a 5 year old. This is absurd. I will never go back to this place. Note: He was very friendly - just incompetent. read more

I've seen a couple of bad reviews for this place, and I have to do some defense, as this place has always treated me right. For starters, I was a regular for about 5 years before I joined the Air Force, and I always stop in for a good post-leave haircut the day before or day I fly back. About 20 of the Air Force patches on the wall are from me, as this is the first place I want to end them. There used to be two barbers, James and Randy. Randy left about a year or so ago, and James has been running the place on his own since. It's a workload for him, and he still refuses to take payment from me since I'm military....I had to fight with him in January to take payment for my sons haircut. Great atmosphere. As a lot of people have mentioned, this is a place pulled straight out of Andy Griffith, with a modern touch. James knows no strangers. As for the haircut...mind you, I'm military. Clean on the sides and a little off the top, and I'm good. If you're looking for a true styled haircut, I'd recommend elsewhere, as James normally ends up doing basic men's cuts, which he's great at. read more
