Taking a trip down the proverbial destination known as Memory Lane can be a perilous journey. You remember the good times, obviously, but then you start to question some of your more, let's say "creative" moments as you look back on your life. Jumping off the roof of the slide in fifth grade was pretty cool until you realized there were rocks under you, and jumping into a relationship with a woman who owns a bookshelf and no books was pretty cool until you realized there was a crazy person in front of you. And I think we can all agree getting out of college before camera phones existed is proof that timing truly is everything. But then sometimes you look back on your life and ask the hard-hitting questions like, "Why did I not name names in my Yelp review of the barbershop I've been going to for more than 10 years?" By now the more astute Yelp readers have noticed a former five-star review and this new five-star review. Essentially this is an update that dares to improve upon perfection, where "perfection" is the Razor's Edge experience and not my former five-star review. (While not as bad as some of my Yelp reviews from "back in the day," it's not my favorite piece of work I've ever shared with the Internet in a desperate plea for attention.) The reason for this update is simple: following the emergence of "normalcy" as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, haircuts and barbershops are like sacred grounds in a world where we could all pass for ZZ Top stunt-doubles. That Razor's Edge has been doing what they do for years while weathering the coronarvirus storm to continue providing marvelous haircuts is a testament to the talents of everyone under this roof. A visit to Razor's Edge is akin to a social gathering. Customers are laughing and making conversation with their barbers, the woman at the desk has never met a stranger, and the team of stylists are as welcoming as they are knowledgable about cutting, trimming and other verbs related to the act of bringing sharp metal objects near clients' heads to make them look ravishing. The brightly lit interior is relaxed yet professional, with TVs periodically perched around the room and a radio tuned to a diverse mix of tunes. (I heard Def Leppard's "Animal" here one Saturday morning, and sometimes that's all you need to ensure your weekend is going to be okay.) Round it off with some awesome shoe shine services and (new!) reserved parking spots out front, and Razor's Edge certainly makes you feel special whether you're a walk-in or a regular. And speaking of regularity, I consider myself fortunate to have been blessed with the ability to visit the same barber for all this time. Brian is an excellent barber, for not only does he do an exceptional job at cutting hair, but he also manages to make me look good. My typical "style" can best be described as "struggling artist," and yet Brian makes me look awesome. My friends and family are routinely amazed at my transformation into something resembling a functioning member of society, and it's thanks to Brian's skills. I've recommended plenty of others to his chair in the corner of the barbershop, and will continue to do so. The same goes for Jerry, another skillful master who has cut my nephew's hair now for... I'd rather not say, because that's going to make me feel "ancient," and I'm just now okay with feeling "old." Suffice it to say, my nephew will be nine-years-old in a couple weeks at the time of this writing, and Jerry has never failed to make him look like a very charming and stylish young man. I begrudgingly abandoned any hope of still being "the cute one" in our family after my nephew started getting his haircut from Jerry. Such is life. Such is Razor's Edge, now that I think about it. I've only managed to talk about two of the fine stylists under this roof, but I guarantee there are hundreds of customers with equally impressive stories to share about their visits here. Be it a visit to Brian or Jerry or whomever else is available, you're in great hands as soon as you walk through the door. There will be those who feel this review is hyperbolic and exaggerated, though they probably didn't read far enough to get to this sentence. And there will be those who scoff at the pricing, to which I would offer the timeless reminder of "you get what you pay for," and whatever I've paid for here has always left me looking sharp. When all is said and done and you're going down Memory Lane, you'll have nothing but fondness for the time you spent here. read more

Another great haircut at Mike's shop. He has a full service shop. You can get a cut, trim, neck shave, drink a beer, talk sports, politics, get your shoes shined; if it early have some coffee and a donut, read a paper, watch TV. It's kind enough of like hanging out a friends house. Oh and get this - not only does he give his staff Sunday off they get Monday too. Good place with happy employees! My first time here and I was impressed by the location and the price they changed from a beard trim of only 12 dollars. The shop has an old school feel and decertification and has lots of chairs so I can't imagine a time where it's hard to get an appointment. They even have a seating area with two couches and a tv for waiting and the other side has a shoes/boot shine chair if you have the time. I spoke with the lady that shines the shoes and she said that she would also do drop offs. Now the reason for the 3 stars parking can be a bit much and a long walk if it's the busy part of the day. Lastly the lady that actually trimmed my beard, if I didn't know better I would have thought it was her first beard trim. I showed her pictures in my phone and still had to explain to her how to cut and fade the sideburns. I would recommend this place for a hair cut but you can not have someone mess up your beard. read more

I've been seeing Henry for regular haircuts for longer than I can remember...definitely since before he was even with Razor's Edge. He always does a great job for a fair price. If he didn't, I wouldn't still come here. I assume the other barbers all do a good job as well because most have been there for many years. The only knock is location. There's limited parking in front, and if their two dedicated spots are full, there's a good bet you're walking from the parking garage around the corner. Not that big of a deal as long as you leave yourself enough time to get to your appointment should you end up walking. read more

An inch above Sports Clips. Old men giving subpar haircuts. This place is like 97% of most salons for men: great for young boys, or older men, that really don't care too much about their hair. The place is nice and they do have some pretty good hair products. However, most of the stylists/barbers haven't perfected their craft yet. My stylist moved to LA so I decided to try this place out. I have a fashion forward hairstyle that includes a part, some length on top, a fade on the sides/back, and styled on most days. Again, just like most places, they don't know how to fade. It took the barber a few tries (even with pictures) to get it 60% correct. I ended up leaving and went straight to another place to have it fixed. Spent almost $40 with a tip for an embarrassing haircut. Then I had to spend another $40 to get it fixed. If you're a guy that is very particular about your haircut, keep looking. I'm not sure why these barbers don't have classes set up to learn different styles/techniques, like other salons trying to stand out from the rest. It's extremely difficult to find a stylist that knows how to cut and fade. They can usually do one or the other. However, it's rare that you can find a stylist that can do both. read more

I drive from University Park up to the Shops at Legacy in Plano to get a great scissors haircut from David Hilzendager for a fair price. My kids get their haircut there too. After 5 years in the wilderness searching for a good Barber I stumbled upon Mike Cravens and Razors Edge. My long nightmare is over as this guy is tops. In moving from Chicago, I found that replacing a barber is harder than finding a Doctor and I've been through about 10 often actually choosing to fly back to Chicago for a decent cut. Mike is an interesting guy and has the most important trait of a great barber, he listens to the customer. I'm over 70 with a solid head of hair that I take pride in, I don't want a fade and don't want my head shaved. I am used to a gentlemen's barber shop with real pro's and Razor's Edge will hopefully be my last stop. read more

Whenever I'm in the area, this is my go-to barber shop. Yes, it's a little more expensive than most places but you get what you pay for. Jerry does a great job and has cleaned me up a few times, but yesterday I showed up 40 minutes before close and was taken care of by Thomas. WOW! He has been cutting hair for 40+ years and really listens to how you want your hair done. He gave me one of the best fade's I have had. The service was very prompt; right on schedule for my appt and the stylist, Kari, was very attentive and respectful. I could tell that she took her work seriously and was most interested in seeing me leave happy. $24 + tip is pretty reasonable in my opinion, especially for quality work. I wish I could give them no stars... I booked a surprise appointment for my boyfriend for Saturday, February 15th for a hot towel shave and a haircut because I had a groupon. The appointment was set with Pamela, which was issue number one, because she was rude and disrespectful the entire time to my boyfriend. On top of that, she explained that she does not do shaves so he couldn't get one since it was too close to closing time for her to have this done for a paying customer... So he just got a haircut that was so uneven! There were patches of longer hair everywhere on his head, it was a buzz cut. First time in, asked the woman if she knew how to do a fade she said yes then proceed to cut my hair and didn't know how to do a proper fade. She stop twice asking if it was good and it wasn't short enough or faded after awhile a guy had to step in a fix/finish the fade. If you aren't confident in your fade abilities then just say so when asked and maybe work on that since you work in a men's salon. Not the worst haircut since the guy fixed it but far from best. I've been here 3 times. My first experience was on my lunch break from work. I had a groupon and noticed that their appointments are scheduled thirty minutes a part, so I thought that I could squeeze in a haircut within my hour long lunch break. I went in and was on time for my scheduled 12:30pm appointment. However, the haircut lasted over an hour, and I ended up being late getting back to work. Now, I want to point out that I don't have any outlandish hairstyle, I try to keep it simple and short all over, using scissors on top. Not sure why it took so long. But, the haircut was good, so I decided to come back. The second time I went to Razor's Edge, I scheduled an appointment after work, at 6pm. I had a 7pm dinner party, which I told my stylist up front. I got there around 5:45pm and she was able to start cutting my hair a little before my scheduled appointment, which was great. However, this appointment lasted well over an hour, and by the time I cashed out and left, it was 7:15! Again, all I wanted was a simple haircut and shampoo/wash. There is no reasonable explanation why it would have lasted so long. When I go to the Boardroom or Sport Clips, the same haircut takes less than 30 minutes. This was over an hour and ended up causing me to be late. My most recent (and probably last) experience at Razor's Edge was this past weekend. I scheduled a 2:30pm appointment to get my haircut. I was in the middle of running errands, and in order to not be late, I got there right around 2pm, expecting to have to wait a bit before my appointment (no problem). The receptionist was nice and offered me a donut and a drink, and I sat down and waited. Around 2:10, the barber that I had an appointment with came out and called back another person, which made me assume that his 2pm appointment was running late. "No big deal," I thought, I didn't mind waiting a bit. I assumed that it would take 30 minutes, and I would get seated around 2:40. Around 2:50, I wondered what was taking so long. Finally, at 3pm, the barber and customer came to the front from the back. At this point, my appointment is already 30 minutes behind. But, I needed a haircut, and I assumed that I would be next, so I waited for him to clean up and call my name. At 3:05, the barber comes out and calls someone else back to his chair for a haircut. This was a guy who had just walked in. Either they were running really behind (over an hour if that was his 2pm appt) or he decided to skip my appointment altogether (I'm 99% sure this is the case). Either way, I wasted over an hour sitting in the waiting room for a haircut that I didn't get. Nobody acknowledged how long I waited, nobody apologized for how long I had been waiting, nobody came up and told me that they were running late, it was as if I wasn't there. I ended up leaving around 3:15. The secretary asked if I wanted to reschedule my appointment for that upcoming week. I politely said no, and left. No way I was going to reschedule for a different appointment time if they can't keep their appointments anyways! I ended up going to the Boardroom across the street on Monday, got a fantastic haircut, didn't wait at all, and had a great experience. So long story short, I've been there 3 times, only got 2 haircuts, each time spent almost an hour and a half for what should be a 30 minute haircut. The 2 haircuts I got were done well, but it's not worth my time and energy to come here when I can go elsewhere and be treated better and still get a good haircut. read more
