As far as vegan restaurants go, PLANTA is hands down the best I've experienced. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and tried several things I wouldn't normally order, and I loved every single bite. The Caesar salad was incredible so much so that I genuinely think they should bottle and sell that dressing in stores. And the raspberry cheesecake? It absolutely gave me life. It was rich, creamy, and so delicious that I'm still thinking about it. For our entrées, we ordered the Hawaiian pizza, spicy rigatoni, and spaghetti carbonara. While everything was good, the pizza and the rigatoni were my clear favorites. I also tried their sushi and was pleasantly surprised by how much it resembled traditional sushi in both texture and flavor. It was a fun and delicious experience. What impressed me most was the quality and creativity of the menu. There's truly something for everyone, whether you're vegan or not. The restaurant itself feels bright, airy, and inviting. It's the kind of place where you can easily gather with friends, family, or even enjoy a date night. The service was excellent, and our server was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. We decided to finally try this spot after a month of debating...so we made our way out there during rush hour ( I knoww) to hopefully enjoy a meal. While I am not a vegan or vegetarian my friend is....and I wanted them to enjoy the evening. The space is actually right next to the paid parking garage, so minimal walking. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the outside seating is probably lovely at night. Why the 1 star review? We were seated decided on a meal and no one came to even offer house water. Were they busy? There were only 5 people in the restaurant...including me and my friend! One lady dining alone...worked there. We stayed for a bit hoping to at least get served ....nothing. As we left, the staff who were grouped by the kitchen/bar bid us adieu (bye). Didn't feel welcomed....not the Bethesda I grew up in. Smh read more

Where do I start with this gem of a restaurant? I have lived in the area for nearly 11 years and I've dined in Bethesda more than a few times. I have walked past this restaurant a more than a few times but never have experienced it before. I use the word experience because it was an experience. I am not a vegan but that doesn't matter when you come here. From the moment we entered the establishment it gave off a Scandi, but friendly vibe. We were greeted by a young man with wonderful hair! You know who you are. He gave us menus, explained to us a little bit about the restaurant and allowed us to take our time. After looking through the menu, we decided to sit down. He went to prepare our table, then showed us to a wonderful outdoor seating area. Our server, Ava came out to great us . She was just fabulous and assisting us to try a little bit of everything. She had high praise for the chef and she was right. She was both courteous and friendly. We visited during happy hour. We had two drinks. My honey had Apreol spritz and I had a Mezcal maybe. Both drinks were delicious and well-made. Next came the delicious food. We had the kimchi baos, spicy tuna maki roll, the spicy tuna hand roll, and the summer roll. The last thing we ordered was the udon noodles. All of the food was delicious, but I must say that the udon noodles were a standout. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the creamy sauce gave me my first food epiphany! We didn't try everything on the menu, but I'm sure there are more delicious gems to be had. Neither of us are vegan or vegetarian, but we had a lot of fun. The food was awesome. Planta is very easy to get to too (see note about parking down at the end). Just a note that the online and in person "savor bethesda" menu has the wrong cheesecake listed for desert. It's a berry one, not Key Lime. Hits: honestly everything. The Dragon Roll App is really tasty and we were very impressed by the vegan-ness of the sushi. The Summer rolls, which we added on our own, were really fresh and tasty. The tater tots were so wonderfully, lightly crispy and I loved the kimchi and the other accoutrements . Our mains: the vodka pizza and Carbonara were also amazing. I'm a bit of a carbonara snob and I was really impressed by the creaminess and flavors of the dish. We also really liked our mocktails and the berry cheesecake desert. But: While the Chocolate Brownie desert was simply really nice. A couple of our vegetarian friends really wanted to try Planta, and so we decided to hold our Friday night date night there. (Yes, we bring friends with us on date night. We are weird.) Although my husband and I are omnivores we appreciate good plant based food, and since many had said it was good, we had high hopes. Fortunately, Planta lived up to our expectations. We made reservations, since we'd heard it can be hard to get a table. Even though it was a Friday night, we could have gotten a table. But, it was also raining so that might have contributed to lower traffic. We ended up getting a bunch of food to share: Spinach & artichoke dip Bang Bang Broccoli Thousand layer potatoes Spicy Tuna Roll Volcano Roll Red Dragon Roll Unagi Nigiri (I didn't try this one, but everyone else raved about it) My husband had the Emperor's Old Fashioned, friends had the Lych Please and the Pom and Get It. I, as designated driver, had a Cosmic Colada followed by the House Mint Lemonade (and I had a sip of the Lych Please just to taste it.) My favorites were the Bang Bang Broccoli, the Spicy Tuna Roll, and to my surprise, the Thousand Layer Potatoes. I also loved the House Mint Lemonade. The broccoli managed to not actually taste like broccoli, it tasted like Fried with Peanut Sauce. (No, there is not a missing word there. It tasted like Fried.) I usually don't get excited about potatoes unless they are twice baked or the amazing potato salad from Polka deli, but these potatoes were actually really good. Sliced, layered, not exactly crispy except on the edges, but super tasty much to my surprise. I'd actually order them again. The Spicy Tuna Roll tasted nothing like tuna, nor did it taste like watermelon per se but it was delicious. The notes of coconut probably played a role in my assessment. Folks in general were less enamored of the Volcano roll than the other dishes and I concurred. It wasn't bad, it just was lackluster compared to the others. It tasted kind of like a salad dressed with a lack of oomph. While I personally liked the spinach & artichoke dip, the folks in the party who aren't coconut-o-philes thought it had too much of a coconut taste. I've never met a coconut I didn't like though so this didn't bother me. I would order the Lych Please if I weren't driving, it was good - sweet but not too sweet. The Cosmic Colada wasn't bad but I probably wouldn't order it again either. It had less of the coconut flavor than I hoped for and a lot more just "juice" flavor. If I'm not driving next time I'll just suck down the house mint lemonades instead. All in all, it was good. I'd definitely come back and order some of these items again and hopefully try some others. The menu was interesting. I had watermelon sushi! The texture was not to my liking, but they really did make it look like the real deal. I also had the chick'n and waffles. That was delicious. The drinks were good. It was almost a five star experience, but I left feeling somewhat unfulfilled. I think I was missing animal protein, and it was no fault of the restaurant. Planta of course is all vegan and the food is very good, just super expensive and staff are not always friendly. My daughter has a service dog and they wouldn't let her in without documentation despite her dog's vest. Daughter had to dig through her email and produce a Dr's note. I guess they have to be careful but they have to find a way to do that that avoids guest humiliation. Another time we had reservations for Valentine's Day and they had overbooked so they turned us away at the door. Would have appreciated a phone call in advance. Left us in a tough spot with our guests, which really stung. Another time we had a fantastic waiter who made our dinner very special. So I find them undependable. Planta Bethesda really impressed me. We came for happy hour and everything was delicious -- I had a cocktail, two rolls, and a couple of small plates and left completely full. My brother is vegan and has told me about Planta for years. I'm kicking off the year by limiting meat so figured Planta would be the perfect place for a Friday night dinner. My partner and I did not have reservations and even though the restaurant was busy, they were able to seat us immediately. We ordered the bang bang broccoli, 1000 layer potatoes, ahi watermelon nigiri, and two bao sliders to start. Everything came out quickly and was so filling that we decided to split the burger as our main with a Caesar salad. All of the food was delicious and we left both full and satisfied. My favorites were the bang bang broccoli and ahi nigiri. As I drink, we ordered the cucumber mule and I ordered one of the brez social tonic drinks. Both drinks were wonderful sipping mocktails. This place is delicious and incredibly popular, so make reservations at the busiest times or prepare to wait. They have a bar area, too, so if you're going in solo just for the incredible offerings, that is an excellent choice. Their libations are plentiful, as well as seasonal and festive. The prices are steep, but the food quality is on par with the prices, service and contemporary offerings. This is not your boring vegan cafe with burgers and salads. Their pizzas and sushi are maybe the most popular table items. The pizzas can be made gluten free. My only concern is I always want more, and pizzas can only be ordered in one size. They have many options to choose from, but sometimes the simplest seems the best - Vodka pizza! I've had it twice and just don't want another one. Their appetizers are fabulously flavored. I noticed almost every table orders the bang bang broccoli and /or the kelp Caesar. The broccoli is deep fried tempura style if you ask me, but the sauces are very different with a peanut spicy duo sauce smothering these florets. When you bite in, the bright fresh green of the broccoli balances the rich sauces. The 1,000 layer potatoes have a sweet touch to them that we weren't expecting, but it's a creative dish, so, enjoy the unique plating. I have yet to try the pasta offerings, but am dying to do so another time. Having tired a bunch of sushi, I'm happy with what they have from torched and pressed to spicy tuna and crispy rice, they are delicious. This is a great choice for a fancy evening meal or a treat yourself lunch. The food is so good, that I cannot ever just order the normal meal amount, which is why I can't just go her for a normal meal but must make it special to justify ordering twice as much food as normally eaten for my meals. I came here a little while ago and finally catching up with reviews. Planta was having "seafood" month and I got the miso tofu salmon. Heavens was this good!!! They cut the tofu so that it could have the same salmon flaking. The flavor and textures were amazing. Much better than I had imagined!! The service was attentive and courteous. Our group of 6 felt cared for. The facilities, including restrooms, were trendy, somewhat fancy. Parking in this area is challenging but they have some paid garages, paid street parking nearby. Planta is overall vegan, and they are very delicious and flavorful and filling! Read that again. Even though I am not vegan, I really loved it. In fact, most of my group were not vegan and they also loved it. So non-vegans- don't be afraid to try it out! Really! As with everything these days, the prices are going up and for Planta, it's on par with a non-vegan restaurant, so it's not a place I could frequent often due to budget constraints in this recent economy. However, if budget is no constraint, I could easily see myself becoming a regular! I came here while my car charged and am glad I did! I am allergic to seafood and am dairy free. This is a great alternative. The sushi was so good! The chai latte was a bit too spicy. It took them a long time to make it but the waitress comped it. I give them a 4 because I was there alone, and it took them a good 20 minutes to come and take my order. I've been to the Planta in Los Angeles. From what I heard, they all have a different concept. This one was cool. I ordered the pizza and a sushi roll. The chorizo pizza was harsh and spicy. Over all, I'd give it a 6/10. The sushi roll was really good. This is a nice dining experience. They also serve alcohol of you're into that. Parking garage next door so that's cool. We were genuinely excited to dine at what has always been one of our favorite restaurants, Planta. Unfortunately, this experience was beyond disappointing -- it was shocking. We walked in and sat at an entirely empty bar. At the time, there were only about five tables occupied in the entire restaurant, yet approximately fifteen employees -- including two managers -- were on the floor. Despite this, we sat there completely ignored for over ten minutes while staff stood around chatting and moving about. Eventually, the bartender approached, dropped off water and menus, and immediately walked away without another word. It then took another ten minutes before she finally returned to take our order. At that point, we were already considering leaving because of how blatantly ignored we felt, but we stayed solely because we've always loved Planta's food. She took our full order, including cocktails and food. Fifteen more minutes passed. Another employee had joined the bartender behind the bar making drinks, yet we still had received absolutely nothing -- no cocktails, no appetizers, nothing. During this time, a table seated behind us after we arrived had already received both drinks and food. We were completely flabbergasted. I finally walked to the host stand and asked to speak with a manager. One of the managers was passing by, and when informed that I wanted to speak with her, her response was simply, "Yeah, give me a sec," before walking away. Mind you, the restaurant was still relatively empty, and we remained the only two people seated at the bar. The level of disregard was honestly unbelievable. After feeling thoroughly ignored and disrespected for nearly an hour, we decided to leave. As we got up, my friend told the bartender, "We're leaving because we haven't received anything," to which she casually responded, "Oh, you didn't get any food?" What stunned us most was that we never even received our cocktails. This entire experience was INSANE. We were prepared to spend well over $200 that evening, and instead we walked out feeling disrespected, invisible, and honestly saddened by how far the restaurant's service has declined. I truly hope the owners of Planta are aware of what an absolute disaster this restaurant experience has become. read more

It's also pretty expensive, which is why we usually stick to their Maki Monday deal -- unlimited maki rolls and crispy rice for a set price. Honestly, I wouldn't be as excited to return on a non-Monday. Favorites: - Torched & Pressed - my go-to. Fantastic truffle flavor with perfectly ripe avocado. That said, there's been inconsistency lately with the amount of rice. When they use less, the truffle shines -- but recently the extra rice has drowned it out. - Crispy Rice - amazing. Super crisp base with toppings that pair perfectly. - Dragon Roll - tasty and well-executed, but the flavor can get a little boring after a while. - Red Dragon Roll - least favorite; the texture just didn't work for me. Service has always been decent, no complaints there. Definitely recommend sitting inside -- the outdoor area isn't as nice with people constantly walking by. This review is mainly about their unlimited Maki Mondays. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated and very modern with nice cutlery. The bathrooms were gender specific but very clean. First off their service was good but not great. Our server kept forgetting to bring us water in the beginning and kept forgetting what we had coming as the night progressed, although, he was nice about it. And WOW! FOOD WAS DELICIOUS ! I also just learned they have a night happy hour too. So, how was the sushi you may ask? Here we go!: Torched and pressed: umami central! This roll is incredible! Dragon roll: delicious broccoli with umami notes and creamy avocado. My table thought that the broccoli could've been crisper though. Crispy rice roll: crispy and sweet ! Firecracker roll: this was an experience! The moment this roll hits your tongue you feel a BOOM, CRACK, BANG! The crispness of the potato, the creaminess of the avocado and the chili salt to top it all off was both beautiful in flavor and presentation. Spicy "tuna" roll: watermelon instead of tuna, this was probably my least favorite as it lacked a presentation of flavors like the other rolls did. I personally thought the toasted coconut was weird but my table mates loved it. My least favorite... Baked "crab" roll: palm of hearts instead of crab, this roll was delicious! It tasted like crab but had notes of carrot to mimic that seafoody taste. The mayo probably had some kind of old bay seasoning to help it out? Not sure but it was definitely my favorite out of all the rolls! We were sooooo full by the time we ordered our 16th roll! Dinner with tip came to $37 per person. I would eat here again, as someone who consumes meat. My wife and I were here with another couple for dinner; they had picked it, and I believe it was for an approximation to kosher rather than as vegan per se. But every dish was delicious. I need no persuading: just as there is ample evidence that protein that comes from animals can be prepared as an unappetizing meal, so too protein that comes from plants can be made into a scrumptious treat. I have since learned that Planta is a chain. I tried another venue, and it also met the same standard. Some items are imitations, i.e., beef, chick'n, or carbonara. Other options are what they are, in their own right. All of it was great. We had the Baby Gem with Green Godess and the Pad Thai Slaw. We had the Bang Bang Broccoli and the Cripsy Gyoza. We also had multiple "sushi" choices. I can say I'd be ready to try it all again. There a few of their offerings that tempt me even further, such as the Reuben. I intend to try it. When I come to a place such as Planta, I realize I need to be a better person. I do not mean devouring less meat for ethical reasons, though that too. I mean out of self interest, which ought to be compelling if the other arguments are not, I need to have smaller portions and more food based on plants. The catch is some of what is here is quite processed. That is in the nature of the matter: if you want a simulation of meat, that requires exertion to transform the plant. The wait staff also is well trained. They are solicitous. Everyone should have to serve at some point (and nobody should be relegated to that for life). It instills courtesy and discipline. read more
