What went well?? Everything did. These are the types of places you desire to find when you're on the road staying somewhere for a few days. So much character at this place with the staff, the setup, and even the building itself. They've have been here a long time... I believe in was told 2nd generation, but I could be wrong. I went here two days in a row while in town to work baseball stuff. So friendly and helpful, just like good southern folks are! The food was fantastic! Flavorful, and all you can eat?!?!?! Yes. This restaurant is what dreams are made of. The biggest shame is that they don't do a breakfast bar sausages, bacon, eggs, grits, country, ham biscuits, etc. The ladies that work there are the friendliest friendliest people you ever meet in your life they recognize you when you come in if they know that you drink a lot of sweet tea they leave a picture on the table for you. Everyone that walks into this place acknowledges each other with a nod or hello. The food is always always terrific. They change the menu every day and add different things on each day. Thursday is in my opinion the best day because they do Thanksgiving, turkey and dressing and gravy and veg and it's just wonderful wonderful wonderful! I have been going to the Plantation Buffet almost every Friday for a pretty long time. I love fried fish above almost anything and that's what's on the menu every Friday. When stupid Covid hit of course we stopped going. I only went back last Friday for the first time since then. I have been living out of state on and off for several months. They had self-serve plastic plastic tableware dispensers set up at the beginning of the line next to the plates. You were required to wear a plastic glove to go through the buffet line, also supplied. I got in the food line, which wasn't very long, and made my way to the buffet. The first thing on the line is the fried fish and the tray was empty. I was disappointed, but I also know that they'll fill it up soon enough. So I went through the line and got the sides that I wanted. I took my plate to a table and came right back to check on the fish. Still empty so I caught a cooks attention and asked about it. He told me just a couple minutes on the fish. After just a couple minutes he caught e eye and beckoned me over. He has added fish to the buffet but had pulled a platter out for me!! Yay!! So sweet! The next thing on the food bar is their fried chicken. I usually get at least a leg when I go there because it is so very good. But you know, I'm here for the fish. The there is also baked chicken if that's what you like, but I've never tried it. So I went t through the line and got the sides that I wanted. The macaroni and cheese is pretty good, with a cheesy, crusty top. I like the mashed potatoes and sometimes put the gravy on them too. It is brown gravy from the Salisbury Steak tray. I like the turnip greens and I especially like the white beans with my fish. They have quite a few sides but I can't remember them all right now. I can just tell you about what I get and like. At the end of the hotline is the bread. I don't usually get bread so I don't know what is usually offered. I'm pretty sure there are rolls and probably some cornbread. On fish day they serve hush puppies too. After the hot food line there is a cold case, where you'll find the cold salads. I can't really tell you what they have because I don't get anything there except the slaw. Slaw just goes with fried fish, don't you think? The cold case is where you'll find your tartar sauce too. The servers will ask your drink order and you'll likely have it by the time you sit down. They'll keep your glass full too. The Plantations Buffet has been open for many years in the same location. It is a local favorite and a place we send people to when they're from out of town. They are only open until two for lunch so if you want to visit, make sure you're hungry and on time. read more

While the outside isn't that inviting, the food is what brings you in and back again and again. Southern samplings include fried okra, squash, killer fried chicken and occasionally goat. They say the best food can be found at two different kinds of restaurants: the ritzy, upscale places, and the "holes in the wall." Plantation Buffet would be among the latter. It's located in a shack on Martin Luther King Parkway just inside the Athens Perimeter, and it's a classic Southern-style buffet. The decor is really about function and nothing else; there are no tablecloths, and the plates didn't even match until recently. That's part of what makes the place nice, though -- there's no pretense to it. They serve fried chicken and Salisbury steak every day, but they also have a special daily meat rotation. My favorite days to go are Monday (pork chops) and Thursday (pulled turkey), and the occasional Wednesday (meat loaf). They also have a vegetable rotation, but I haven't picked up on the pattern. Some of the vegetables include, but are not limited to, green beans or collard greens (both with fatbacks), lima beans, black-eyed peas, fried okra, stewed tomatoes and white rice. The tea is always sweet, and the desserts are either hot pudding or hot cobbler, depending on the day. The service is friendly too, especially if you go semi-regularly like I do. The only drawback is that their hours are limited; they're only open from 11AM to 2PM, so they only serve lunch. Prices are very reasonable too; it's an all-you-can-eat buffet with a drink for $8.50. You get a lot of good food for your money. Be sure to take some time off for lunch to eat here if you like Southern-style food. read more

Fried chicken, mashed taters, gravy, okra, catfish, chow chow, corn muffins, green beans, collard greens, and a glass that never gets half empty of sweet tea. The Southern lunch spots in Athens are dwindling. It's great to see the parking lot full Monday-Friday during lunch hours at Plantation. Don't forget to bring an appetite. The food tastes great and you can eat all you want. The owners always speak with the diners. It feels like eating at home with family. The price is also great and a beverage is included. My favorite day to go is Monday. It's fried pork chop day at the plantation buffet. They also have mashed potatoes, squash and green beans as well as many other sides. When you get there just walk right up and make a plate. They ask that you take all you want, just eat what you take. Enjoy!! read more

Ate there 9/27/17. Seems to be a favorite of lots of working folks. A bit kid-friendly. If you can't find an open table, you just sit where you can find a open chair. Menu had fried chicken, spaghetti, hamburger steak (advertised as "steak), several vegetables and just-out-of-the-oven banana pudding. The mashed potatoes did not taste as having come from a box and were pretty good. Most of the vegetables tasted as having come from a can except the creamed corn which tasted pretty good and scratch made. The "steak" reminded me of Bubba burgers with canned gravy poured on them. The salad bar was weak and limited. The banana pudding was tasty but runny and I prefer it cold. Tea, included, was good. This was nothing special, filling, but there are better places in Athens for the same $10 price. read more

Traditional southern soul food. It's pretty good and the prices are reasonable. It's not out of this world but good if don't feel like cooking. I don't know what they put in the green beans but they are really good. Mac and cheese wasn't good. The squash was weird tasting, it has cheese and onions in it but it doesn't taste like the squash casserole I'm used to. read more
