Stayed here for 2 nights in February. Booked through Expedia and we received a small bottle of prosecco, and a slice of their coconut cake as a bonus. Bed was comfortable. The rooms were nicely decorated with a southern charm. I really liked the large soaking tub and Illy coffee maker in the room. The lounge also had coffee, tea, fruit, and cookies (after 6 pm.) The staff were friendly, nice, and helpful. Valet parking only. Great location next to the Charleston Market. Walkable to many tourist sites such as the pineapple fountain, Gibbes Museum of Art, Rainbow Row as well as shopping and great restaurants like Lowland. There is a restaurant and cafe that we went to for breakfast, Benne's. read more

I feel like I can't comment about Planter's a whole lot as I didn't stay there very long & I'd gotten a reasonable rate on Expedia. The hotel is beautiful in its historic glory & Luke at the front desk was very kind and accommodating. The AC/heater in my initial reserved room was broken & he immediately relocated me to another one with a working unit that was also more spacious to boot! My only complaint is that photos of the rooms listed on Expedia look far different from what you actually get. I don't know if I just got an old room, because my rate was discounted, but the furniture in the room was in poor condition. I know it's a vintage boutique hotel and I'm not in the hotel business, but I think all your rooms should more or less maintain the same standard & be presented in the same fashion online & in person. read more

My stay at the Planters Inn has been absolutely wonderful. From the polite employees at the front desk to the cleanliness of the room. This is probably the best hotel I have ever stayed at. Valet parking was wonderful and worth the price. We were able to check our car in and retrieve it in minutes. The valet attendant or bellhop was extremely kind and helpful with luggage. Our room was beautiful. The 4 post bed and decor made it really feel like an authentic historic Charleston experience. Although the room was historic feeling the cleanliness was not lacking. I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in. The bathroom was also stunning. I can confidently say my husband and I will be back to the Planters Inn! read more

Not sure what all the 4- and 5-star reviews are about, nor can you convince me $$$ is an accurate way to describe a place that charges $$$$$ for a stay. Don't get me wrong... some aspects of Planters Inn are worth praising: The staff are super-polite and will go out of their way to accommodate whatever you need. The grounds are clean, well laid out, and located very conveniently in the middle of Charleston's touristy hustle and bustle (emphasis on hustle). Other facets, not so hot. Do you really wanna share the block with a "French Market" filled with cheap tchotchkes and gaudy gifts, while thousands of randos cavort past the front door every hour? Never mind that virtually all of the shops within walking distance sell desserts (why?), booze (really?), basic clothing, or "historic" tours. The most obnoxious ones hire buskers to entice you inside, and the worst offenders have forlorn teens handing out "handmade flowers" asking if you'd like a mule ride. Did I mention the entire neighborhood smells like mule dung? While Planters Inn serves as a nice respite from those shortcomings, sleeping there overnight leaves a LOT to be desired. At $750 nightly, it pains me to mention my list of grievances, but here goes: - Lobby offers nice coffee, tea and occasional snacks (but we found them to be almost consistently empty; when a snack was present, we saw only one); - Bathrooms apparently don't have a (working?) vent, so you are forced to live with your mistakes and those of all your roommates; - Speaking of mistakes, the toilets barely flush what lands therein - the bowl design lends itself to things, er, sticking to the bottom - and when they do, get ready for a rude surprise of cold water bubbling up your bum; - The mattresses, while generously sized in the case of the King, are lumpy and so slanted that I'm not sure how I didn't wind up on the floor each morning; - The televisions are so old and non-smart that a full 1/5 of the screen is occupied by a floating message announcing, "LCD TV", obscuring your program, and nothing like NetFlix, YouTube, HBO nor any streaming service is available; - The remote buttons are hard to press, and each time you do, the TV takes several seconds to change channels or volume; - Your key card is supposed to operate the elevator and open the stairwell, but we regularly needed 2-3 tries before it worked; - The adjacent restaurant, Hank's, gets rave reviews, but despite promises from Guest Services that they might be able to wrangle us a table, that turned out to be a fool's errand (nobody we know ever got to eat there). I'll leave it there, but lordy, who wants to pay over $1500 a weekend when equal accommodations could be had at any Hampton Inn for one-fifth the rate? Four Season's it ain't. read more

We just returned from our babymoon at the planters inn. We chose the babymoon package and it was really nice! With the package we were given a baby book, teddy bear, a piece of their famous cake to welcome us, sparkling cider, and local skincare products. Our plan also included daily breakfast. The hotel is beautiful and so well maintained. Our room was lovely and clean. I will say, for someone who is short and pregnant, getting onto the bed was always a fun challenge bc it's so high up. The pillows are unfortunately pancakes and I think it's time for an upgrade there. The hotel itself is in the perfect location. We walked everywhere and never felt like something was too far out of reach given we did not have a car with us. We stayed early in the week so it was very quiet at night, we did not have a problem. The only small problem we ran into during our stay was that our flight home was changed to very early. We had asked if the hotel could put together a to-go box for us the morning before of biscuits/other breakfast goods that we could bring on the road with us bc we would be missing breakfast time by 2 hours. They said it wasn't possible. Upsetting bc it was part of the package we paid for and I don't feel like it was a big ask considering other hotels have accommodated before for early flights without us even asking. All in all, the hotel is lovely and we would absolutely recommend. read more

All of that is right here.! as far as accommodation our room was ready at 10 AM that doesn't happen anywhere outside of the United States. The room itself was a luxurious suite with two bathrooms two TVs two closets just about two of everything in a beautiful king size bed multiple rooms. I haven't even made it to the bar or the restaurant yet which I heard is five star all on their own. This is a very beautiful hotel. That's thought of everything. read more

This is a good choice if you want to be right in the middle of the action in the Charleston Market area. I had a piazza room, which opens onto their courtyard and has a bistro table for outdoor seating. The room was a good size and nicely furnished with good blackout drapes. My room happened to directly overlook the market building, so there was some street noise from that and from the bus stop directly beside the hotel. There was also considerable noise from some sort of street cleaner that sounded like a jet landing on Meeting St. at 5am. The bathroom is a little plain but does have a huge tub that would be good for a nice soak. I did not try the Peninsula Grill restaurant in the hotel, but the decor looked beautiful. Service was of particular note throughout; everyone is ultra-professional and the check-in was very smooth and pleasant from the entry to the reception desk to an escort to your room. read more

Planters Inn on North Market Street in Charleston and is in a great location. It is a beautiful hotel and exudes southern charm. All of the staff at the hotel was excellent and helpful. The hotel is absolutely beautifully appointed and there were so many nice touches from the coffee, cookies, lemonade and macaroons at night during our stay. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable and the A/C worked great in the 90º plus heat in August. The bathroom was awesome with very nice fixtures.The grounds and lobby of the hotel are also lovely. We really like the location overlooking the Charleston Market and everything on the Peninsula is within easy walking distance. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Charleston. read more

Hubs and I went to Charleston for our babymoon. We decided on Planters Inn and we did not regret it. I will say check-in took forever, but we were upgraded to an amazing suite so it was worth it. The room was huge and gorgeous. The location is perfect for exploring Charleston. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. They do offer valet at the hotel but we parked in the parking garage across the street instead. One of the evenings we were sent champagne and coconut cake from room service (adjacent Peninsula Grill) which was so sweet. It was a perfect hotel for our babymoon. The service here is top notch. Really impressed by how helpful the front desk staff were. I would've given this place 5 stars just for that. I dropped to 4 stars for a few reasons: -the pillows on the bed were really uncomfortable. They're too big to sleep on without your head being too high up all night. I didn't sleep well either night due to that. -we put our room service card out the night prior before the deadline but the next morning it was still on our door. We were in a rush so we had to just skip breakfast at that point. -we didn't get any explanation about the property or services provided. We were showed to our room and that was that. It would've been nice to learn about amenities or had recommendations shared. The room was beautiful. We got the king suite with a separate living room, which was lovely. There weren't any great views, but I didn't mind. Overall, I'd recommend this hotel. And yes, it is pricy and the coconut cake is excellent! But you know both those things coming in. read more

Was just there this week. How charming!! My favorite hotel I have ever stayed at! Felt like home and not a hotel! Clean, modern, spacious, restful, warm staff!!! A lot of attention went into the rooms. For example dimmable lights in the bedroom and two in the bathroom. We had a fireplace too. Was incredibly romantic and relaxing. Expensive Antique furniture incredibly well maintained with all glass tops! All matching! It wasn't old though it was antique if you know what I mean. Very modern bathroom. The room was sooo spacious and cozy I wanted to just rent it and live there!! Never experienced anything like this. Hotels are so cold in comparison. There is Airbnb but this was 100 times better than Airbnb. And the staff were all warm and friendly. I look forward to future stays. I plan to go back to SC just to stay here. It's relaxing and comforting and I can go on and on. Cons? Hmmmm. It doesn't look that wow on the outside. Or even in the lobby. Be patient. Because the room is something else. It's so spacious and beautiful and clean!!! Oh also for anyone wondering the room was bug free. I was up late through the night with the lights dimmed, If there were any I would have seen it. The teddy bears are too cute and we purchased one at front desk. Great quality! This Inn was a big disappointment. Let me start by saying we came home with bedbug bites from our 2nd floor room. Renovations have been poorly done. Bathroom was small, dark, ceiling fan filthy and noisy, walls showing repair after repair, Paint chips on floor. Room was rear view with a second floor camera from next door building pointing directly into unit. I was looking at it while sitting in bed. Inn did not provide any type of breakfast which was supposed to be included in the rate we paid. They said it was city order that they could not serve the buffet and told us to go to any of the open places around the hotel. Other inns we have stayed at during Covid time have come up with creative solutions to continue providing breakfast. They also cancelled the evening wine and cheese hour. With no to go option or any substituted nicety . The staff was very pleasant. As a whole we are very disappointed with our stay. Concerned about our luggage with bed bugs, so dealing the treating that issue now. Will not visit Planter Inn again. read more

Took me awhile to sit down and write a review for this Relais & Chateaux property. Shout out to the Manager who is FIVE stars. What a nice lovely gentleman who went above and beyond. He is an asset to this hotel and deserves whatever accolades can be bestowed upon him. Shout in to the Owners who get negative stars for pulling the pet friendly policy the prior owners offered. In this day and age, there are those of us upscale travelers who enjoy traveling avec chien. Why in the world would you be so anti pets? It simply doesn't make sense. The Carlyle in NYC welcomes them, for Heaven's sake, as do many other upscale hotels around the country. I did not like my room one bit. It was most definitely not like staying in a standard Relais & Chateaux. I could go on and on about it but I won't. My initial bell man was also a joke. Again, not in line with the Relais & Chateaux ambiance. Items that were in line with what Relais & Chateaux stands for, however, aside from the Manager, included the overnight desk clerk. This lovely lady had great energy and kindly found me some soy milk early in the morning with a pleasant, welcoming Southern charm. The afternoon tea/coffee and cookies were delicious and made you feel as if you were being entertained in the parlor of an old charming southern plantation. And, the coconut cake found in the restaurant is actually trademarked and is A+++. You can easily take some to go and enjoy on the road. The manager is most definitely THE standout of the hotel but if you are traveling with le chien, then try the Wentworth Mansion or the new Kimpton being built downtown. It would not surprise me in the least bit if this place loses their Relais & Chateaux designation. read more

We stayed in the Governor's Suite which had a huge bedroom and living room - with a pull out sofa sleeper that was actually sleep-able. And it had 2 bathrooms, so my wife and I had one and our son had his own. And I would be completely remiss if I didn't point out how excellent, excellent, excellent the service is. EVERY person we encountered bent over backwards to serve. Everyone at the front desk was polite, kind, and very helpful. The valets were professional and quick. Our maid couldn't do enough for us. She was such a charming, caring person. She really wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. This place is an absolute gem and we highly recommended it. Do not remember specific names, not that it matters, but front desk staff was not very friendly or seemed preoccupied with folks that were checking in as part of a wedding party, which I understand is an important event, but we also were paying guests. First the good. The staff was extremely polite and helpful. The room was large and clean. The keurig in the room was nice. It was located right in the downtown area. The afternoon lemonade and tea was refreshing and the night cookies were good. Valet all day parking was a reasonable price. Now the things that make it not worth the money. Bed was very high off the ground which made it difficult to get into. The tv only had half the channels working as the digital signal was not working on the other half. Our room was on the first floor and the window was on a street where anyone walking by could see in and if you close the shutters it was like a cave it was so dark. I've paid less for a room in a castle in Ireland that was larger and nicer. All in all if I came back I would look for another place that was a little less expensive as I'm not sure it was worth $1500 for 3 nights. read more

Don't let the pictures put you off. It looks old. It's not. It's traditional, with furniture that was made to last generations. Perfect, well cared for furniture. Modern and fresh bedding, bathroom amenities, and flooring. I was so happy when we walked into our room. I was concerned it would be rundown and called "historical" for the ripoff price. Oh no - this hotel is wonderful. Connected to the Peninsula Grill, Planters Inn is historical indeed but you will not do without. Luxurious bathrooms, super comfortable bed and bedding. Service came in for turn down while we were out shopping and left macrons on the nightstand for when we returned. If it's the little things that add up, this hotel is well over the top. Personalized service - Bellhops remember your name, are quick with suggestions and the valet parking is most reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. Under $20 with in/out privileges. There are beverages in the parlor just off the entrance. You step back into time when you walk in the front door, and luxury when you step into your room. Loved it. read more

We great time we had in Charleston (our first but certainly not last visit), and our stay at Planters Inn made it even greater. The hospitality was second to none - every staff member greeted us, they wished my wife a happy birthday on her birthday, and we got restaurant and daily touring recommendations. In particular, Tim at the front desk was accommodating since the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out and got a taxi to the airport. He's very friendly, thoughtful, and really cares about the guests. He also sent up a bottle of Prosecco and a slice of their famous coconut cake to celebrate my wife's birthday. And also, a bellboy named Nick should be recognized - also a very friendly person who provided good recommendations on local restaurants and bars. Another thing that stood out was as our taxi was pulling up to the hotel, Nick was already greeting us as we were getting out of the car and welcoming us to Charleston and the Planters Inn. The Planter's Inn is a beautiful hotel that's perfectly positioned in the heart of Charleston's historic district and is in walking distance to many restaurants and the city market. Despite opening in the 1990s the Planter's Inn looks like a piece of art out of Charleston's historic past with beautiful woodwork, hardwood floors, a parlor, and a courtyard. The rooms are large and well appointed with comfortable period looking furniture. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful as you'd expect of a hotel at their price point. I would love to give the Planter's Inn a better rating, but on our arrival found wine stained sheets on the pull out sofa and a dirty towel far under the vanity in the bathroom. The situation was quickly resolved by the friendly housekeeping staff, but I feel a hotel at this price point should perform better. read more

The location is perfect for sightseeing on the river or the many garden squares. Planters is right in the middle of it all. The one negative is the complimentary breakfast. It seemed to us, during our stay, that the buffet is a bit overwhelmed by the number of guests. The lady was working her behind off but seemed frazzled the tree mornings we were there. This is the second time I've stayed at Planters Inn. The inn is conveniently located directly across from the market and the atmosphere is old Charleston...lovely. The rooms are traditional but the furniture is getting dated. It needed to be polished and our tub/shower could have been cleaner. Our room was on the front of the inn and it was the noisiest room I've ever stayed in. It would have been nice to get a heads up for $500/night that the following happens at the crack of dawn 1) the daily street sweeper 2) the daily garbage truck 3) the maids closet right next to our door - talking loudly and getting their cleaning carts out and then the last day we were woken up to painters putting up their ladders right up to our windows. I couldn't wait to get home to uninterrupted sleep! I did think the bear and the macaroons were a nice touch and the outdoor seating was pretty. read more

I stayed in the Proprietor's Suite for my third anniversary. This review is probably better suited for those who have stayed in inns and hotels at this price point a few times in the past and have a feel for the ones that meet those expectations and those that don't. If this were a Holiday Inn Express, I would've given it four stars, but with a $700 per night room charge comes top tier expectations that the owners should have to answer to. On the other hand, if you want charm and nothing more, I can't say there's anything better because I've only stayed in nicer traditional hotels in Charleston, but it might suit your needs. I'll cut to the biggest issues first: for two nights, I paid almost $1500 to stay at the Planter's. Our room was very large and very clean, but lacked the quality and details you expect for what many would pay for a month's rent. Upon entering, what looked like a leather Chesterfield sofa in the pictures was (I'm almost sure of it because of flaking veneer) vinyl, and one of the buttons was missing from a cushion. The mini-bar was empty and nothing more than a cheap white dorm fridge with a missing leg, so that it wobbled back and forth when you opened it. The bed itself was a beautiful canopy king, but the mattress was woefully cheap and rickety when we hopped on it, and (my biggest pet peeve) the pillows were a standard size flat mix of aging feather style and polyester fill. Which brings me to the bathroom. Italian marble they say, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, but dated, likely to when the Inn was renovated in the 1990s. The soaking tub is crammed into a cubby and the shower head is small with aging metal and glass enclosure for the shower itself. And the amenities: Hermés? Nope. L'Occitane perhaps? Uh-uh. For you, the cherished guest, it's Gilchrist and Soames, which is a fancy name for generic Sysco hotel products that are made in Plainfield, Indiana. I probably would've been better off bringing my own supermarket brands. The front desk was mostly polite, if occasionally aloof. On one occasion I was ignored for a good three minutes as the receptionist pounded away on his computer. I asked for a room service menu and was weirdly told there was one in my room after I insisted there wasn't--it was just kind of left at that. The bellmen are also polite but not well-trained on how to receive guests at an inn of this supposed caliber. And finally, their room key system was a mess the whole time we were there. I had to get a new key on two separate occasions after I was locked out, with a total of six keys made unsuccessfully, meaning I had to trek to my room only to find I was still locked out and head back to the front desk, who did nothing but keep trying to make me a new key, all while my spouse sat outside the room door. For a lot of folks, much of this might seem picky. But for people who don't like to drop that much cash without being completely wowed, you probably understand my gripes. The Planter's Inn has a lot to work on in the service and amenities department, which is really the only thing that sets fine hotels apart from the masses. Drop $200 at that Holiday Inn down the street instead--it looked nice and won't have me budgeting for the next few weeks as a result of what was really an underwhelming experience. read more
