I was a little bit nervous about it, since in the past I've had pretty bad experiences with old-school barbers. Something about the way my hair grows, I guess, but I always feel like I come out looking like a twelve-year-old. Not at Off-the-Top. At Off-the-Top, I got the best haircut I've had in years, and for a very reasonable price (less than $20). The place is in this awful strip mall just a block outside of downtown Barre, and it's no frills (all good signs in a barber shop, I feel like). Some places like this, you feel like maybe you shouldn't be there if you're not a regular. Not at Off-the-Top. At Off-the-Top, they treat you courteously even if they're a little laconic. That, again, is something that I think indicates you're about to have a first-rate haircutting experience. If you're like me, and you're a little uncomfortable making small talk with slow, steady workers, you might find yourself getting a little nervous with all the silence. Do yourself a favor and hearken back to your childhood, or even before that. Imagine a time when men were men, and they all got kickass haircuts from proud, quiet barbers with thick necks and immaculate white-on-white sneakers. Listen to the music. At lots of haircut places (barbers, salons, etc), you hear a lot of loud top-40 or sort of dancey, thumpy stuff that keeps the employees going. Not at Off-the-Top. At Off-the-Top you're going to listen to classic rock played out of a ca. 1993 panasonic radio/cassette player, but not too loud. You already know all the words anyway. You'll also enjoy listening to the delicate precision of the scissors as your head is transformed into an immaculate model of what a haircut should, ideally, look like. I'm not sure how much of a choice you really get w/r/t style, but after you tell the guy vaguely (with lots of halting hand gestures) what you're looking for, he sits you down, reaches into your imagination, furrows his brow and knocks on it in a few places (as one might a finicky appliance), IMPROVES YOUR THOUGHTS, and then executes them. At some places, you'd call that a win. Not at Off-the-Top. At Off-the-Top, you get all the above, PLUS this guy is going to shave around your ears with the straight razor. You think you look fresh with that $30 Burlington haircut? Did the guy use a straight razor? Did he smoke a pack a day for five decades first? This is going to change your life, and you're going to stride out of that linoleum-lined hallway into the hazy heat of Barre in August feeling like a prince. Even better, you'll feel like a man. N.B. The other barber's I've tried in the area opted to bulldoze the problem with trimmers, leading to uneven and unsatisfactory results Connie's approach was to take the time to talk through what I was looking for, guided by her suggestions and experience. It was a helpful and collaborative process. It led to my best cut yet, and I know the results will only improve as time goes on. Her reference cards for each customer let you know she takes the time to adjust as needed for each individual. Plus, Connie also has an awesome shop dog! Do NOT give me roots, because I will not keep up with covering gray hair." I told her that in two weeks were my 30th college reunion and a big family event I wanted to look especially good for. Well, the stylist did exactly what I said *not* to do. Partway through the process, there were so many foils that I said, "It looks like you're putting color on too much of my hair." She said she wasn't, and explained her process in stylist-ese that I didn't understand. The next morning revealed that she'd given me roots that started four inches from my scalp. From there to the ends, all my hair was colored! When I tied it up, it looked like I had on a cap of gray/brown hair with a multicolored ponytail attached to it. Yuck, clown time! I called the stylist and asked her to please, please get me back in for a repair. At this point, she had the opportunity to make me a loyal customer for life, if only she'd said, "I'm so sorry we misunderstood each other. Let's get you in and make it right." But no, she was defensive and deflective. She couldn't get me in before I left for my reunion/family trip, but then she said that she prefers to keep any color "adjustments" to within two weeks of the original color appointment. She took zero responsibility for the misunderstanding. She never once said she was sorry or tried to empathize. She even corrected the word "repair" to "adjustment." She tried to blame me, saying, "I asked you to bring pictures of what you wanted." When I then showed her photos, she said, "I guess I don't understand what you're looking for." Also, this stylist finishes other people's sentences. Not only is that annoying when I'm conversing with her, but it makes me think she isn't into listening to others. Fortunately, I found a wonderful local stylist (Side Porch Salon) who gives me awesome fun streaks of purple, etc., and Orbit in Burlington, where Kerry knows just how to cut my long, curly hair.

I have now had my hair done by both and have been equally satisfied. The shop is clean, sleek, and relaxing with continued improvements seemingly every time I come in. For many months I had Lori cutting my hair. She was very knowledgeable about current trends and executed very well. Recently, I stopped in and after selecting a preference for either employee I ended up at Philip's station. I was honestly a bit nervous after having had positive experiences with Lori but Philip was fantastic! He took immense care in what he was doing and I ended up with a great cut and beard trim. I did notice another review claiming high prices and I highly refute that statement. My haircut and beard trim took around 45 minutes and cost me $18 before tip. Extremely reasonable and CHEAPER than chain locations that bust out cuts as fast as they can. I know this establishment has begun the process of getting its liquor license to add a true gentleman salon feel. They have also recently purchased a humidor in hopes of stocking fine cigars (to be consumed off-site). These additions will further my enthusiasm for this establishment.
