I don't even know where to start but this place and the girls that work here are a joke and the most uneducated when it comes to fashion and quality education. They have none. I have heard they discriminative and unless it's brands they like themselves they don't take them. I dropped off a box of designer name branded clothes. Mind you NEVER worn and in beautiful condition. I expected something back, however when I came back they said nothing was going to be bought due to 'wear and tear' again NOTHING has been worn once and was in MINT condition. The problem here is they said that, however when I looked at what I brought it. They DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT IT. The clothes were still neatly folded and placed exactly how I dropped it off. So what happened was these little girls didn't look at anything I dropped off, didn't even try. Wasted my time. When I dropped off a box of DESIGNER shoes they gave me a huge attitude again. They made a big deal about me leaving another box. I was met with disrespect and attitude. When I asked about my clothes they laughed and said nothing. So not only was my time wasted. These little girls were rude, disrespectful and undeserving. I wasn't going to bother, however I was told by some people they would take these brands! So I tried. Another note is I actively saw a girl tag and price items from a name brand that were counterfeit and fake. So you people can take fake name brands, but not actual name brands is WILD. From someone who has worked in fashion and knows stitching and quality and proper pricing and who also works at a location similar to this. You lied. You scammed. You wasted my time. You did not look through anything I gave. You are lazy. You are incompetent Most of all uneducated in fashion. Stick to your knock off lulu lemons. . This company is and always will be a joke. They didn't buy any of my friends fashionable clothes and she had high branded stuff but yet looking at their clothes they have some stuff that wouldn't even be bought at goodwill. Also the staff was really rude and they all looked like they were 12 years old. No manners read more

I have been going here for years and always have a great experience. I buy and sell and truly have no complaints. Items are bought based on inventory, style, date, and resell ability, so not everything is bought all of the time, and that is okay! Definitely recommend both buying and selling! read more

Very clean, helpful staff and easy to access. There's a little of everything I was looking for - and in most cases a lot of what I was looking for. It's obvious they cater to the current and nearby season and make sure there's plentiful stock for a wide variety of tastes. I actually had fun shopping at this location. If I could give a zero star I would. Let's start off how when I walked in to the front counter to trade some clothes and no one greeted me I took like about five minutes for someone to say something to me I get it that they're busy but three of them looked at me didn't bother to help. I've worked at this place before I know how these girls run they basically only choose what they want so they can purchase them. Plato's Closet on Thierer Road has a lot going for it. It is so neat, well organized, clean. Each time I stop in I find something I've been looking for, and at the right price. There is a huge selection and it's helpful, with so much to choose from, that items are arranged by color as well. I've recommended Plato's Closet to several friends. It really is one of the very best second hand clothing stores in Madison. Most recently I found a black shirt for $4.00, just what I wanted to wear with black pants while doing a fair amount of flying this summer. Sometimes I will lighten my suitcase for the return home by donating clothes while traveling. It's easy to part with a $4.00 shirt. read more

My favorite Plato's location, I almost never leave without buying something but these low prices make it acceptable. The service is usually nice, sometimes have to wait for a fitting room but that's all. Can be a little bit of work to dig through the plethora of clothes to find things you like but the effort is almost always worth it. Also the best way to make some quick and easy cash. They always complete my buys in a timely manner. The thing to remember is that they have a computer system that prices things for them so if you want to make closer to what you paid for an item you need to put in the extra work yourself to sell it on poshmark etc. read more

Let's just begin with; I LOVE second hand shops, they are my favorite. I have gone to just about every feasible option in Madison (always looking for suggestions, though, if you have any secret gems you know about!). Platos, while decent, leaves much to be desired. With the exception of only one time, the quality of service I receive is consistently low, ie: waiting around for someone to get a dressing-room open, no offered assistance, they yell for each other from across the store, etc. Having worked in retail, I can usually just sum it up to one bad day, or being extremely busy, but I do expect a certain level of professionalism and at least a feigned kindness. That being said; there is a lot to go through at Platos, and if you dig enough, you'll probably find something you like and the prices can range from Yay! Cheap! to.. ."Are you kidding me? $35.00 for used jeans? Yeah. No thanks." I tend to go searching for dresses, as that selection is usually moderately priced and the styles vary. The other spectrum of Plato's is that they "buy your gently used clothing" and persuade you to "sell your style". Here's the problem; their "standards" are so absolutely ridiculous (example: last time I went in I had a laundry basket-size box of clothes. Name brands like Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Express, BCBG, Calvin Klein, White House Black Market, just to name a few. They "regretted to inform me that [they] had to pass on everything today due to normal wear, and outdatedness". I did not realize that Abercrombie hoodies, and Express jeans could really be 'outdated' but... alas). If this was a one time occurrence, I may blow it of, but this is every. single. time. I. sell. something. If they DO want to buy anything, they offer you an almost insulting price (example; never worn teal Converse sneakers that I ordered in a size too small - $5.00. I came in with a friend so she could sell something a couple weeks later - they were priced at $40.00.). Not impressed. If you're looking for quality second hand or affordable items, I encourage you to check out ReThreads (State Street or West Side), Salvation Army (Sun Prairie), Goodwill (Sun Prairie or State Street), Ragstock (not second hand but their basement is filled with bargains), or UpShift (Johnson St. - you'll love this; bring in a bag of clothes, pay $10, fill the same bag up with new clothes. Besides having the store so jammed packed with clothes it was hard to visually check the outfits out since the hangers have no room to slide, this is a great store. Filled with every type of outfit and in multitude of colors. I went home with a large bag of clearance clothes, many tops only $2 and in great quality. Men's section also had a great amount of options. Nice to shop for used clothes without wasting time on the very bad quality outfits. Good selection but the prices are outrageous for a used clothing shop. We went to one in Woodbury, MN and they had the same clothing/brands for $10-$20 cheaper. This is the most expensive RE-SALE shop I have been to. Why would i pay $25 for used jeans when i can get them new for that price? Very disappointed. read more

really upsetting that they aren't very responsive and helpful when it comes to their store and their instagram page. for the store they aren't very good at being in the back where the fitting rooms are. i definitely think that they should have at least one person in the back of the store at all times that are running the rack, organizing, or doing what they can for the store AND the customers. the west side location is better in my opinion when it comes to customer service. however, both locations are terrible when it comes to some of their employees being pretty stuck up like another review has noted. sure you can hire someone for their style and their attitude during their interview, but when they are actually on the floor it can be a different thing. some employees don't talk that great about the customers and i've heard some negative things/drama between employees being talked about. it definitely should not be tolerated because it just doesn't show good professionalism in a work environment. sure they can talk about their opinions and thoughts, but it would be great if they were private. it just doesn't reflect a good view on them and Plato's Closet as the managers are the ones hiring these employees. as for their instagram page my friends and i have experienced trouble with trying to hold an item. attached to this review is the hold policy that is posted on their account. when one of my friends commented on their post within seconds of them posting she was the first to comment but they said someone already has it on hold even though she was the first to comment and their hold policy states that the first to comment gets the first hold. apparently someone called in for the hold but there is no where that says one can do that so if they don't want to confuse customers they should update their hold policy. when she told them about their hold policy through direct message they opened it and didn't respond. perfect example of bad customer service, not explaining and clarifying the customer privately and to other customers publicly. when you're selling your clothes they pay you close to nothing compared to what you originally paid for the item in the first place. yes the items sold within the store are cheaper than what you can get them retail priced but the amount of money they pay to the people they buy from is ridiculous. overall, customer service is sh*t. read more

i came in to sell two bags of clothing. after picking only 2 pairs of pants, i asked them what was wrong with the others. the woman told me that the jeans i had in the bag were over-washed so they couldnt take them. there were items in the bags that i had just bought from them less than 6 months ago that she told me were too out of date. after all of this, i looked around for some clothes. i saw multiple items that were in less than great condition, things that look like they're 3 years old and are worn out. i bought two pairs of yoga pants and one has a hole in the leg. it frustrates me because none of my clothing had holes and were in great condition, some things never even worn. i probably wont be going back just because they wouldnt take my clothes but the ones i looked through were in worse condition & have holes. disappointing to say the least. read more
