I've been upset about the way these people treated me and my deceased mother for several years and only now even felt able to write this review. I'm glad to see others have had positive experiences, but I really cannot recommend this place. I was traveling in rural Japan when my mother died. It was difficult to get back to New Jersey and took me a little time. I spoke to the funeral home staff on the phone, clearly explained what we wanted, and told them my expected arrival. While I was ON THE PLANE, the funeral home consulted with a friend of my mother's, not even a family member, and made irrevocable decisions that went directly against what I had explicitly stated on the phone before I left Japan. No one checked with me. No one tried to contact me. No one considered waiting a few hours until my plane landed when they could have called me to discuss. No one told me anything until I arrived at the funeral home days later. This is completely unacceptable and unethical behavior and quite frankly, I was so shocked, while also experiencing grief, that I couldn't even react at the time. It's several years ago now, but I still think of it often. I am still angry about it. In fact, just writing this made me furious again. Please go somewhere else if you need funeral services. Death is inevitable, but the loss is one that's indescribably heart-wrenching for families who need to plan a funeral. The last thing someone is focusing on after their loved one has passed is reviewing any of the merchants whose business relies on loss of a soul, mourning, and grief. This is the "death industry". It is my responsibility, as an Elite Yelp reviewer to provide authentic and objective information to consumers. Platt Memorial Chapels has been in business for over forty years. Yet prior to this review, how many have given feedback of the ease and true sincerity Mr. Platt and his staff? My reason for a rare 1-star review- it's well substantiated below and an experience I never want anyone to be subjected to again. I highly doubt that this was a one time fluke, especially when my family was recommended by a friend of Mr. Platt's. Greed is inherent in moist people, dating back to the Bible. When you choose to lean on it and conveniently forget ethics, because of obvious agony of another that can be your unscrupulous gain, it's deplorable. Where do I start? What is Platt's mission statement? What are its core values? Did you know that there's a "Federal Funeral Rule" to protect consumers, because the exploitation is so prevalent. Platt's website alleges that they are available 24/7. An answering service is available to take calls during the majority of time the doors are closed. But, Mr. Platt, who's name brands the company, isn't available to speak, not return calls, over a weekend, late evening, nor during a domestic trip. In an industry well-aware of their customer's vulnerability and time constraints, Platt utilizes the death industry in an exploitative manner. Platt doesn't show the best of humanity, nor provide transparency. They're not good at logistics, communicating, and offering full disclosure. After all, that would require following the law and having some sense of decency and a moral compass. Their resources are few, and they have perfected ways to make the consumer make decisions at a time and cost that leaves them at Platt's mercy. To take advantage of families dealing with loss, is a sad and nauseating site to witness. When you watch them exploiting someone you care for who is emotionally drained, it is bothersome. Actually, it pisses me off. Platt finds ways to charge for everything conceivable, and affords a grey area where one cost can fall under the heading of another. If you go onto Platt's website, or, better yet, call Platt weeks to months prior to your darkest time of morning, they don't send you information that should include the costs involved nor the options available to you. That would require transparency. That would require trust. Under the Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule, consumers have THE RIGHT to get a general price list from a funeral provider when they ask about funeral arrangements, including over the telephone. Platt does not provide either. Consumers also have the right to choose the funeral goods and services they want (with some exceptions), and funeral providers must state this right on the general price list. The Federal Funeral Rule gives you the right to: 1- NO state or local law REQUIRES the use of a casket for cremation. A funeral home that offers cremations MUST TELL YOU that alternative containers are available, and must make them available. They might be made of unfinished wood, pressed wood, fiberboard, or cardboard. 2- Provide the funeral home with a casket or urn you buy elsewhere. The funeral provider CANNOT REUSE TO HANDLE A CASKET OR URN YOU BOUGHT online, at a local casket store, or somewhere else -- or charge you a fee to do it. The funeral home CANNOT require you to be there when the casket or urn is DELIVERED TO THEM. Platt's caskets and urns are limited and upwards of 250% more than the cost direct to the consumer. That, alone, is thousands of dollars for an item that can be overnighted to them THAT THEY MUST ACCEPT. Platt's technology for remote viewing of funerals is dated and does not afford a clear high quality close up view of who is speaking, nor Is there a speaker that can be heard without audio feedback. There are other options. With the information provided, I truly hope this eases your pain and grieving of a loved one, as well as to your wallet! What a pathetic effort put forth by the folks at Platt. One look at the chapel makes it clear that Bernie and his family don't feel that any investment is needed to make the place feel like a worthy location to honor those that have passed. I have to wonder if they have some sense of entitlement as being the primary funeral home that locals engage for this critical end-of-life process because of their "perceived kindness" in the Jewish community. Ken (not sure what his role is) was somewhat rude upon our arrival and again when we asked for the ashes of my mom. Ken and Josh did not even distribute the little white service booklets to guests/mourners. It was our pleasure (LOL) to interrupt the start of our service so our family could find the booklets and distribute them. My family will certainly move on, but cannot recommend this business. read more

Platt memorial chapels handled my loved one's service with dignity and pride. Friendly and caring staff, clean and comforting environment, unmatched hospitality. They made me feel welcome from my first phone call, and didn't disappoint in the entire process. As difficult as it was to have to make the arrangements, the staff was courteous and comforting and I would recommend trusting Platt with the hard task of burying a loved one and providing a service with dignity and pride. Think twice: The Hearse driver, at the head of the funeral procession, sped like a getaway car exceeding speed limits for a funeral held Sunday morning, Feb 23rd, 2014. We were the 4th car of 15. When we got separated, we realized the route he had taken was different than the written directions. So we got lost and I was unable to fulfill my duties as a pallbearer. On top of this, during the grave side service, the driver was chilling and smoking a cigar stub in the hearse. Due to this disrespectful treatment, I would recommend choosing another establishment. read more

Chapel made everything so easy for me.They walked me through all the arrangements I had to make and I didn't feel pressured or rushed.The service for my Father went very well and I actually received compliments on where the service was held!
