I was truly looking forward to spending time here ... as soon as we stepped in, I felt disappointment come over me just by seeing the size of the space.. first impression was I assumed it was larger. I tried to push through but was then checkin in by the horrible staff member who didnt end smile. Didnt even tell me the total when paying for my two children = $23 + $18 = $41 nor have a receipt. I was told it would be emailed, but never got that either. The cost came with an open room with worn down items, broken toys, no coffee station (even though there is a sign), and not even a stocked bathroom. Toys were bent, old, overly used and wearing off. Even the bins from IKEA were falling apart.. IKEA items should be easily replaced as they are cheap. The facilities was worn down as well, paint chipped or peels off on seating area and slides. Mural is still nice. The "cafe" area seating was pushed to the wall, not allowing a place to sit while the worker was putting streamers on a board for the private room. There is no water fountain to refill your water bottle. Again, advertised coffee and tea.. when asked was told "nothing, you can go to starbucks" as I pointed to the sign the worker said "OH"! I had to give the front desk girl broken items and she left in the lobby area!! I can see her just putting them back in after we leave in order not to deal with it. As a representative of the space, she was horribly spaced out with a negative demeanor as if she hates her job. Private room for classes and parties is cute... I believe this is where their energy goes to. I can see it good for a 1 year bday party. Ages 2 and over for open play with bore out fast. I babysit a darling 2 year old boy in the neighborhood. A few weeks ago I had the lucky task of taking him to music class at Play. Right inside the door there's a stroller parking area, which was quite crowded but we made it work. The class was full of moms, dads, other nannies, and tons of kiddos mostly ages 1.5-4. The music teacher was really charming with the kids, had lots of songs prepared, and boxes of instruments with easy rhythm games, and ways to get adults involved as well. We had a blast! There's a fairly large playroom outside of the classroom that has soft jungle gym toys, a big wooden play kitchen, lots of pretend food, balls, a huge safe space to play. I also noticed lots of cleaner nearby, which was a relief, I bet a place like that gets a lot of germs real quick. The parents of my little charge told me that I can always take him there, especially on a rainy day, its only $10 for the whole day. read more

Had my daughter's 1st birthday here and let me tell you it ws AMAZING! From the beautiful decoration, to the big space and friendly employees. They were very attentive,helpful and fun. The place was very neat and organized. We reserved the whole place to ourselves and rented their bouncy house which was a total hit. Kids from different ages were able to play at different stations they even have a special room for the kids to sit. Nicely decorated and the price totally affordable. We rented the place for 3 hours but i wish it would have been lo her because everyone had an amazing time. Both parents and kids. Just came here for the first time and my 22 month old son had a BLAST! It's a great value at $15/day. I think the people writing negative reviews must be pretty cranky. (What person with a young child expects everything to be totally spotless?) There were just a few other kids there on a Sunday morning so it was surprisingly peaceful compared to other play spaces we've been to. I liked how the whole floor was padded so I didn't have to be worried about my son falling. There's a nice variety of toys, a trampoline, and a stairs/slide set. I will definitely return! read more

First and foremost this 1 star does not apply to the space or staff at Recess Dumbo! The space is perfect for little ones to jump, climb, slide and explore. Great for fine and especially gross motor development for toddlers. There's also story/music time that could really have a positive impact on the children and the adults with them if they just get involved too. Creating bonds and something as simple and impactful as "listening ears". Unfortunately though, there were some nannies there who were just terribly unmindful and inappropriate. Having personal loud unnecessary conversations during story time (which was disrespectful towards everyone there trying to partake), not paying attention to the child they are responsible for and even making baffling comments to other nannies regarding the weight of a child. I get it, being a nanny is tough, trust me I know! But what we do, and don't do when we are in small spaces like Recess Dumbo MATTERS. It has nothing to do about being perfect but everything to do about making an effort to do more than just be in the same space with the child/children you are getting PAID to take care of. After asking a staff member if nannies are usually so unmindful during story time (which even other adults there who were trying to be a part of it noticed) or with making inappropriate comments, the very same nanny who made the unnecessary weight comment went to the unmindful story time nanny to tell her what I had asked/said (because she overheard, and I was aware that she could have heard me if she was listening). I had to then spend the last few moments at Recess Dumbo listening to the same unmindful story time nanny make racist comments about me, assumptions about where I am from or what my life is about, and even used inappropriate language around the children in the space. She kept going for at least 15 minutes! Upon leaving Recess Dumbo I was being stared at grossly by these much older nannies who, when I looked in their direction had the audacity to ask ME what am I looking at! Sigh! I did make a comment at this point, if someone had something to ask me since I was being stared at. And after some under the breath comments I suggested that they act like adults! I don't think I have ever left a review as such but I firmly believe when you are responsible for someone's child/children, you have to be and do better. That YOU are responsible for making a positive impact in the child's life. YOU are responsible for teaching mindfulness and positive behavior in shared spaces. I'm pretty certain, the families of these kids who pay these nannies would NOT support such disgusting behavior. read more

Play has gone through some changes since the previous reviews were written. The coffee bar/clothing shop has been turned into another play area so there is no longer a separate area for adults. They also increased the drop-in price from $10 to $20, which seems a bit pricey, and they changed the membership structure. But I enrolled my daughter in the music class and that comes with free play for the whole semester, so we're covered. And the loss of the parents' lounge might be a loss to us, but it's more play space for the kids and that's really what it's all about here, right? Heather, the assistant manager, is super nice and helpful. We are really looking forward to the music class that starts next week. My daughter had a ball playing with all the cool toys, so we will definitely be going to Play over and over and over again. And I would recommend it to anybody with kids under 4-5! read more

My 4 year old loved summer camp at PLAY, so I was a fan since last summer. The place is creative with their classes and events. My favorite so far is the Friday drop-off movie night! It's run extremely professional, especially dealing with the manager Paulina is always a pleasant experience. She is personable, passionate about the place and very creative and reliable. I was most pleased recently with the birthday party she set up. We had a very unique theme and I wasn't sure how they would be able to manage it. Paulina and her team went beyond expectations and got really creative with the decor and made us so happy. We had a great time at the party, everything and everybody were very well taken care of. I take my 2 year old there for open play all the time and he loves all the creative toys, imaginary play and I love airy and clean the place is. What a gem in our neighborhood! read more

We, meaning my toddler and I, absolutely love Play. We first went to Play for a friend's child's birthday party. My then, 1year old, loved it. I have never seen her play so independently. And I wasn't worried with having to follow her around because the play area was so clean and child-proof. I loved it so much, we had her 2nd birthday there and she stayed till the very very end and had to be dragged out of there. We absolutely love everything about PLAY. My son loves this place! It does get packed in the mornings but the crowd seems to die down around lunch time. They are constantly cleaning and picking up the toys when there's a moment so it isn't totally chaotic like my house!! It's such a great place to see what your kid gravitates to! I have ideas for Christmas presents now! For $22 cash $23+CC it's a great find for cold days indoors! Toys are some ok some very old you can't even see what it is. I held my son's 3rd birthday party at Play, and it was nothing short of AMAZING and SPECTACULAR for numerous reasons. I had the Ultimate Private Party, Thomas the Train Dessert table, Thomas the Train decor, custom Thomas the Train backdrop, balloon tower and bouncy house. Play went above and beyond as far as bringing my vision for my son's party to life. What stood out to me the most, was the staff, who GENUINELY wanted the celebration to be nothing shy of PERFECTION, without requiring me to even lift a finger, which allowed me to enjoy the festivities, mingle with the guests and play with my son. I did most to all of my correspondence in preparation for the party via e-mail with Evelyn. My questions and requests were always addressed in a timely manner. I discussed with management the theme and the color scheme I was interested in, and they pretty much hit the ground running. I wasn't told "we can't get" or "we don't have" even once. EVERY idea and request that I had in mind for the party was fulfilled. The day of the party, I worked with with Michelle and Richelle. Both of them were so kind, sweet, friendly, welcoming and organized. The facility is emaculate, even the bathroom! The play space was SO IDEAL for the children! There was quite an array of toys, tunnels, slides and building blocks for boys and girls of all ages. The decorations were OUTSTANDING, beautiful and so much attention, thought and creativity went into even the smallest detail. The food WAS DELICIOUS! The desserts tasted just as good as they looked. The guests were impressed with the decorations. My guests were continuously complimenting me throughout the party, about how much fun their children were having. All of the children received age and gender appropriate party favors, which were labeled with their names, making distribution simple. My son has severe food allergies, and they provided snacks and treats specifically for him that he could eat, which I certainly appreciated. ALSO, literally three days before the party I decided that I wanted a DJ. Even though I already had a lot of things going on in each room of the facility, they were able to accommodate my last minute request. Last but certainly not least...the staff organized all of my son's gifts into bags, and the remainder of the food, cake and cupcakes into boxes for me to take home. I have no complaints, only wonderful things to say about Play. I will definitely be returning to take classes, and also to plan future birthday parties. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FACILITY WITH NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT YOU WILL BE AS BLOWN AWAY AS I WAS! Just had my 2 year-old daughter's birthday party here. We had been deciding between using our condo building's lounge space and an indoor playground. Play was definitely a better choice for us for a number of reasons: 1. Accommodates more people - we had 16 toddlers and at least 20 adults, yet there was enough space for everyone to get comfortable. 2. Theme, Decor, Party favors - Play staff decorated the room, provided party favors (depends on the package you get), ice, plates, utensils, cups, etc. - The devil is in the details, and I was having mini anxiety attacks trying to think of a clever theme and even-more-clever party favors to go with it. I wish I had the time to create original, imaginative favors and decorations--but I don't. They took this burden from me and did a great job. 3. Entertainment - two staffers provided entertainment, playing age-appropriate music and led some song and dance activities. I didn't have to put together a playlist, which saved me hours. My daughter and her little guests were laughing, dancing, and generally have a wonderful time. 4. Prep and cleaning - Play takes care of this for you. They even helped us consolidate my daughter's gifts into bags and wrapped up the leftover food we had brought. 5. Refreshments - (depends on package) they provided cupcakes and juice for the kids. The staff cut the cake I brought and distributed it to the guests. What was I responsible for? I brought non-dessert food for the kids and adults, a cake, soda, and water. And my kid. That's it! It was awesome. There are a number of indoor play spaces to choose from in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and LIC. I think Play is most appropriate for children ages 1-3.5 (although one of our 7 year old guests still had a lot of fun), which is great. Toddlers won't get trampled by older kids like I've experienced at other play spaces with huge, complicated gym structures. Play has a simple climbing gym and slides, as well as a "household" area with play food, kitchen, dining table, and laundry. They have tents and tunnels, as well as ride-on toys. For new walkers, there's even a "sheltered" area by the window that's a bit separated from the rest of the space where a caregiver and a child can practice walking (and falling) safely. Ownership changed here in the last year, and the new owners are incredibly dedicated to making sure every child and parent is happy. I traded at least a dozen emails with them in the weeks before the party. When we initially came in to check out the space, they really took the time to give us a tour, answer all of our questions ---and most importantly---anticipate our needs. I've been a mom for just two short years and have no idea what a birthday party entails. They do, and they were a huge help when I didn't even know what to ask for. Lastly, I'm a germ phobe, and I saw the staff constantly mopping the floor by the entrance to prevent snow from being trekked in. When the crowd started dying down around nap time (around 1:00), I saw a staffer collecting the play food, presumably to wash. I liked that. There are hand sanitizer dispensers on the walls. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked, including the changing station, which had extra wipes and other things that a parent could easily forget. read more

I am a mother of 2 under 2. I brought my toddler here and I like the place I just can't believe they wanted to charge $10 for my newborn that was going to be in a carrier the whole time. Ridiculous! This place is fine, but not really anything special. It would make more sense if it were cheaper, but $20 is just crazy expensive for what it is. You can take your kids to story hour at the library for free and it's basically the same thing. I also wanted to take my 10 month-old daughter to one of the puppet shows they have there once a week, but you have to commit to a package of 4 shows which turns out to be $70. I don't really know why you can't just go to one show. To top it all off there isn't even ramp at the front entrance (Why would there be? It's not like people EVER need to bring strollers there). Searching for a party venue in NYC is like searching for real estate with a tight budget. I came across this place when I took my son to an open play and got some information on the party packages. I didn't know much about the inclusion of everything in the private party package but the party coordinator was very prompt and helpful with answering my questions. I decided to have my sons second birthday here and it was amazing! He had so much fun that he didn't stop playing and wouldn't stop playing, not even for food! My guests were amazed by the decorations and even said the bathrooms were a nice room to sit in ha! Where can I start? Just celebrated my sons 1st birthday here and it was PERFECT! They nailed it from the decorations, to the food! The theme was Winnie the Pooh and they had a special backdrop just of Winnie, just as I wanted.They are very organized and pay attention to every detail. I wish there was an extra star because this place deserves it! We just had our daughters 1st Birthday here yesterday and let me start off by saying "AMAZING!!" I searched for weeks looking for the right place to celebrate this big day, and I kept finding different places but nothing really brought my attention until I came across PLAY. The packages and the play space period are awesome. I'm used to throwing other parties and always doing everything on my own ( decor, favors, etc) so I was real nervous at first about letting other people do the job for me. Play does all this for you, you pick the theme or color scheme and they got it, the favors and the whole set up. They did exactly what i asked and wanted and made everything look so beautiful. All my guest were amazed and so impressed with how everything looked and even how much fun all the kids had. I had kids from 1yr -11yr and they all had a blast. I had the ultimate package and its so worth it, I had 25 kids ( package includes 24) and about 40 adults and there was enough space for everyone to enjoy and parlay. The service was so good. Hannah was our party host and she was so great, making sure everything went well and all the other workers too, from beg to end, all the set up and clean up was on point. They are all AWESOME! PLAY absolutely accommodates and provides you with the best possible service. They are on top of everything!!!! I am very pleased and happy with the success of my daughters First birthday. Went to Play with my 16 month old son. There were 3 rooms - one with toys, one for "music and gym" and one for classes. Overall the experience was just OK. It was essentially a glorified play room and I already have one of those in my building. The "cafe" is nothing more than just a few tables. I had a horrible time feeding my son lunch there. He needed a high chair and there was only one (which was being used). I ended up having to strap him into his stroller and feeding him in that. The main play space had a lot of toys and I will say the staff did a good job of putting things back. Luckily I got an amazon local deal and only paid $10 for my visit. I definitely wouldn't pay $20 and probably won't return. More than anything it just seemed like a place for nannies to camp out all day. read more

But as we entered the place, I understood what the price was for. Play is a very spacious indoor playground, with rooms suited for classes and play time. There are lots of cool toys around, people there are very friendly, and there's a coffee bar for parents and babysitters like me to hang out! The place was very neat, too. we chose PLAY for my daughter's 2nd birthday and I'm so glad I did - the owner Michelle accommodated all my requests, we asked for the Yo Gabba Gabba theme and they did all the beautiful decors and favors. We had a big party, about 30 adults and 19 kids (ages from 1 to 13!), yes! that many and all the kids had fun playing in the gym area. We ordered catering which they set up nicely in another function room and there was another open room near the entrance for the kids to further play and explore. We requested for a theme character "Foofa" and a Face painter / Balloon twister which provided more fun and lots of dancing to the party! The owners were there and made sure all of our needs were met. We had the pleasure of having Hanna as our party host and made sure everything goes well from set up to clean up, she even took pics for us! We used to love play...there every Saturday. We found out the place was recently sold and I gotta tell ya, don't like what they did. As mentioned by previous reviewer....the phoenix and Nola shop is gone so are some of the toys. The price to play is now double. My daughter's 1st birthday at Play was everything that we had hoped for! After doing some research online, we decided to check out Play in person and we LOVED it. Since our daughter was born the day before Halloween, we decided to have a cute Halloween party, costumes and all. Although it wasn't one of their available themes, they had no problem throwing together a perfect party! My husband and I both work, and all of our extra time was spent putting the party and our costumes together. There wasn't much time for party decorating so I let Michelle run with it. I put together some pins for inspiration and that was it. Well, let me just say that Michelle EXCEEDED my expectations!! The decorations were absolutely perfect! Dave and the rest of their team were fantastic. We ordered catering (and had some homemade goodies) which they set up, and replenished throughout the party. I was able to enjoy the party without having to worry about anything. Also, I love that it's a family run business - really makes be feel good about giving them our business. Just had my daughter's first birthday party at PLAY and couldn't be happier with how well it went. The owners personally supervised the party and organized entertainment, food set-up and clean-up and were more than happy to recommend any additional vendors that could be added to amp up the fun. Prices were very reasonable and they created personalized goody bags (pails) for our little guests. Another nice perk was that they took photos for us (we didn't even know they did that) and it left us more time to entertain our guests and enjoy ourselves. The kids had so much fun, a few even had a tough time saying goodbye when the party was over. I got rave reviews from the other parents for having such a fun party and feel very grateful to the PLAY team and will definitely be back! My own little girl didn't want to leave at the end. As a mom who is always running around after my toddler, it was a nice relief to be able to just let her run around free inside their facility since it was set up to be safe for little ones!
