I have never been here and will never be back. Everything we ordered was not good. We ordered the combo plate with burrito, taco and enchiladas. They all looked and tasted the same. They were bland, the tortillas were soggy and the sauce didn't know what it wanted to be. I ordered a salad. The chicken was coated in chili powder and not in a good way. There was a weird raspberry salad dressing that I'm pretty sure came out of a bottle from a local grocery store. Why put Hidden Valley Raspberry vinaigrette on this kind of salad? Plaza Azteca is one of my favorite Charlottesville restaurants. The free chips and salsa (that they refill whenever you run out!) always fill me up so I have leftovers since I can't finish my actual entree meal. I've had the fajitas, the burrito mex, and just the fresh guac on my various trips and each time, I was extremely satisfied by the food. The service has always been great for me and the people have been very friendly. Sometimes you have to wait, but you can usually call ahead and it's fine. I found the place to be very clean, despite the large volume of people who go in and out of the restaurant. I highly recommend Plaza for any and all occasions. read more

After reading the horrendous reviews here right after this restaurant opened I planned to just skip even giving it a try. We were in the neighborhood a couple months ago and wanted Mexican so I decided to check out the nacho's (I'm a nacho fan). I was pleasantly surprised- fajita nachos were GREAT and my sons burrito was huge and he gave it 5 stars. Service was fast- decor was nice (though it kills me that they ruined the old Boathouse interior, which I loved). Last night we took the whole family for dinner and again it was stellar. I love plaza azteca and usually the food is good but the whole reason I went tonight was for the $6.50 jumbo margaritas during happy hour (3-7pm) that were advertised on the main page on their Charlottesville website. I was disappointed when the check came and the happy hour price was $7.99 instead of the advertised $6.50. The manager was not at all willing to give us the advertised discount and so we had to pay the $7.99 for the margaritas that were not at all worth it. I know this is a small difference in price but the false advertising without any type of discount at all is what's truly frustrating. All I ask is that they change the advertisement on their home page, otherwise service and food was okay. read more

Food is good, but service is less than stellar. During our most recent visit it took forever to place our order. When the server finally arrived, I ordered a margarita and then my food--the server steadily writing the entire time. Our food showed up fairly quickly, but alas, no margarita. When I mentioned this to our waiter, he seemed confused. Annoyed, I finally told him to forget the margarita (why wait another 10 minutes for a drink and already by halfway through the meal). I can overlook one mistake, especially when waitstaff are clearly busy, but from the time we sat down to the time we left the restaurant our server was literally standing around watching the soccer game on TV. Our new favorite go-to Mexican restaurant. Plaza Del Mar is amazing. Prickly Pear is really great too! So far we have been seated immediately. (10 times out of 10, even on Friday and Saturday nights) And the food comes out really really fast 5-15 min always. Came to this place for food and drinks with family. Was very disappointed in the nachos I received (I had to send it back 3 times). First plate received, was COLD like it was waiting for 10 minutes before being served. The second plate I received was hot (plate only). Food itself was cold and gave me a mountain of lettuce instead of beef. The server recognized my frustration and brought me a plate of fresh ground beef. It's like all they did was cook the plate. First, the food tonight was the same as always, average to above average. It's a bit pricey but not as pricey as other Mexican restaurants in the area. What set this place apart is the service....it's absolutely pathetic. I ordered online at 5:10. Their website says to allow 45 min so I chose to pick up at 6:00. Get there at 6:05 and I am told their "machine" for online orders is not working so my order was never put in. What "machine" they could be taking about, I have no idea. The hostess was was completely unconcerned. She offered to take my order and we could wait another 10 min(we waited longer of course). No apology for thier mistake, no offer to make it right, just a blank stare. Btw, after she took the order and sent it back, not another word from her despite walking by us several times...like I said, the service here is pathetic- always has been. While driving by on 29 North on a few occasions, I noticed that Plaza Azteca was going to open up in the space that had been Boathouse (which was previously Maverick). I never tried the former restaurants at this location & I'm always interested in trying a new Mexican place. I tried to go about a month ago, shortly after Plaza Azteca opened, but it was so crowded that particular night there wasn't any available parking. This past Saturday night I decided to make another attempt with a friend. We went around 9:30 PM, so the crowds had largely dissipated, though the restaurant was not unbusy. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who led us to a booth at the back of the restaurant. Our server greeted us promptly & after water was delivered with chips & salsa (the chips & salsa were decent & free to refill), we put in our orders. I ordered enchiladalas de cochinita pibil - I hadn't heard of cochinita pibil before, & the menu indicated it was slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus juice & annatto, which sounded good. The dish came & was plated nicely with the sour cream decorating the enchiladas in a grid-like pattern. The enchiladas themselves tasted okay, but as I ate them pools of grease began to form on the plate. The grease combined with the sour cream was particularly unappetizing, so I didn't finish the enchiladas. I don't know if this is a function of the particular dish or poor preparation of it. Fortunately the rice was fluffy & nicely seasoned. The only other problem was that the server put in the wrong drink order for me. I had asked for one kind of margarita but got another. When I pointed out the mistake the server did offer to get me the correct drink, but I declined. Although it wasn't what I had ordered, the drink I got was good. Overall all the experience was decidely mediocre, & the food wasn't noticeably better than any other Mexican place in Charlottesville. If you're looking for standard Tex-Mex fare, Guadalajara will still do the trick & is even a bit cheaper. read more

My husband took me to Outback for my birthday-----but after being told we had to wait an hour for a table we went next door and tried Plaza Azteca. Even though the restaurant was busy we were seated right away. I ordered fajitas and my husband ordered one of the combo platters with chile relleno. We had our meal in front of us in less that 5 minutes. Fajitas were great---very fresh ingredients. The worst customer service ever! A server dropped a dish of salsa and it basically shattered all over the floor spraying our entire table with salsa. The salsa was on my face, in my hair, all over my dress and chair. Not one person apologized. I waited a few minutes, and all the servers just sort of milled around and cleaned up the walls and floor. Not one word to us - well except one server who pointed out that I still had salsa in my hair. No one told the manager. I finally approached the hostess and asked to see the manager, by then servers were on chairs cleaing the salsa off the ceiling. The manager stood at my table right in the middle of all the chaos and asked me to show him where the salsa was on my person. By then I had used about four napkins to clean off the worst of it. He offered a 50% discount for the entire table for our trouble. No apology - in fact he gave the distinct impression that he thought I was not telling the truth. Accidents happen, but it's how you respond to an accident that counts. In this case, the response from the entire staff, including the manager was inadequate. I will never go back, and I will encourage others to boycott the restaurant as well. read more

The food was OK but ordinary. The servings were generous and the prices reasonable. The service was slow. Once we had our food we did not see our waiter again until nearly finished. It took a long time to get our bill and even longer for the waiter to return to take our credit card. The décor was nice but the restaurant was very noisy and the seating not very comfortable. They lost their second star on the way out when my wife, who is physically handicapped, decided to use the rest room only to find out that IT IS NOT HANDICAP COMPLIANT. How does this happen in a new remodel? Haven't they (or the building inspectors) heard of ADA? A complaint to the hostess as we left was met with a blank stare and no comment. My husband and I love Mexican food and decided to give Plaza Azteca a try despite being long-time fans of El Puerto. We were very pleased. Service was fast, margaritas were great, food was really good -- hot and tasty. We liked their salsa a lot too -- not too spicy like some of the other Mexican places in the area. It seems that English is a second language to most of the employees there and our server was a bit hard to understand at times, but he had no trouble understanding our orders and he was friendly. Maybe a lot of the folks who had a bad experience went too soon after they first opened when they still had to work out the kinks. ?? We will definitely go back! read more

Ok, I went here a while ago, so maybe it's gotten better, but considering the Mexican food choices in Charlottesville, I would steer clear of Plaza Azteca. Here's why. 1. There were 2 servers fighting over my table when I went. Aren't they assigned numbers? 2. The food wasn't good. If I remember correctly, it didn't even seem like Mexican food. It was kind of slimy looking. 3. Our food took a while (it was busy, so it's not such a big deal). All in all, I would have to give this place 2 thumbs down. I visited Azteca in Charlottesville Va on Sunday April 15th 2018 with some co-workers. This was my first time ever visiting this restaurant. We had a new waiter and there was a lot of confusion with our order (this was not a big issue since he was new). My biggest issue is that I ordered one drink that was a bit pricey that was $15.17. My card was charged $19. I did not okay an extra $4 dollars to be taken out of my account. I gave the waiter $5 in cash for a tip. This happened to my other coworker and he card was charged an additional $4 as well. She called the location and they rudely asked if we gave the waiter a tip! it is not the waiters choice to take money out of anyone's account for a "tip". The manager said we can come get the money that was taken out of my account. I should not have to come get money that was taken out of my account. My first experience was not a good one.
