We were seated right away. The atmosphere was bustling, with lots of tables happily enjoying their meals. The place was clean. The seating looked newer and really nice. We were given chips and salsa quickly and our drink orders taken. Once we got our meals (which was literally just minutes after we ordered it) we were all out of drinks and I had to flag our waiter down for new ones. And by that time my meal was almost gone. The pricing on the food seemed a little high. Overall the food was okay. We wanted to try this location because it's the only Mexican restaurant in the city we haven't tried. While mostly everything went smoothly, everyone in our party agreed we liked a different Mexican place more. We never enjoyed plaza azteca years ago because of the entrees we would order. But a few months ago we were looking for authentic Mexican tacos. We decided to come here to see their options and it has been addicting ever since. Being carnivores this location provides great protein options without being forced to have carbs such as beans and rice. They also offer gluten free corn tortillas which is amazing. And offer a dish that is all protein with no carbs ! That is so hard to find. But not here. Service is always so great. Ambiance is well maintained and comfy with an open space. We look forward to coming here and come too often lol but so worth it on top of having excelling customer service. read more

The upholstery is new(er) and it remains a clean place for service... The staff was responsive and the food was standard American Mexican fare... Our utensils were short and had to ask for more, the single red salsa bowl had remnants of sour cream on the inside edge... The waiter quickly replaced it with a little sarcasm, "red salsa with no side of sour cream"... Kudos on his quick retort to having it replaced... Love the flavor of the salsa, cilantro and spices were on point... The chicken fajitas were cooked as requested, well done and not over done... My husband and I came here on a suggestion of drinks from my daughter and sister, plus it was near our hotel. There are a few Mexican restaurants in the area and it seemed like most of them had a wait but we were able to be seated right away. The layout is open and roomy which is good for large parties. They have a wide variety of food and drinks on the menu so you won't be disappointed. As you wait for your order they bring you chips and salsa. I ordered the Azteca salad and my husband ordered steak fajitas with a drink called trash can. The salad was very plentiful but IMO was dry. Not sure if that's because it contained a lot of chicken which is a good thing but if not cooked just right chicken can get dry. I did add salsa to it but that didn't help much. The salad doesn't come with sour cream and it's 2.50 to add a very small cup. The steak fajitas came out blazing hot (picture Chili's x 5). The only complaint my husband had was there was only 3 tortillas which means you run out before you finish your meal. I'm sure you can order extras but it was too late. He did enjoy his drink. The service was good, could have been better but it was pretty busy and I feel our server did the best she could. Would we return? It's possible can't rule them out. read more

Great service. Great tacos. We go every other Tuesday for Taco Tuesday $1 tacos. We didn't get the tableside guacamole this trip. It is excellent as well. We were in a hurry to get to an appointment but had 35 minutes to kill for quick lunch. Melissa enjoys the crunchy tacos with chicken. Before I get started, I'll say the server was pleasant, helpful and efficient. So, blow by blow... I started off with a Luz and Sombra margarita which tasted like Band Aids, very unpleasant. The chips and salsa were disappointing. The chips were stale and the salsa was made with canned tomatoes, nothing fresh or lively tasting, no spice level to speak of. I tried the pork tacos al pastor, more like pork fat tacos, greasy and awful mouth feel. I asked for the spicy tomatillo salsa, which came out red (!). When asked why the tomatillo salsa was red, the runner explained it was because they make it with chile de arbol. Huh? Chile Serrano goes in tomatillo salsa. I ordered the Texas nachos. There was plenty of well-seasoned and well-prepared protein. Then, the stale chips with an insipid cheese sauce, gooey and tasteless. No sour cream, no guacamole, no pickled jalapeños on the plate. I would have preferred to pay the same amount for half the portion if it came with quality toppings. I don't think anyone who works in the kitchen knows what Mexican food should taste like. The restaurant was pretty, otherwise, it was an entirely unsatisfactory experience. They received two stars because the server did the best he could. I won't go back. read more

I ate so well, I needed a nap :) The flavors were absolutely delicious, nothing overly seasoned. Atmosphere: The restaurant was very open and light inside. It was extremely crowded which is great for business but it reduced some of the comfort in the dining area. We opted for the bar so we could sit next to each other and watch the tv's. They had some lower level ESPN channels on that had some obscure sporting events like a Corn Hole tournament and an Ultimate Tag tournament. It was relatively clean, I didn't notice anything special about the cleanliness. Food: The food was great. The menu had a few gluten free options and they specified vegan and a few other allergen concerns. I got chicken tacos with a corn tortilla. I typically don't like corn tortillas but this one was pretty good. Lots of other great options on the menu as well. Service: Nothing to note. I also had a Miami Vice adult beverage and that was really good. The waiter seemed frazzled and I watched him turn in circles several times It took me asking 7 times to get a shaker of salt. He looked at my empty drink glass 4 times and I was finally able to get a drink refill. The salsa tasted like taco sauce from a taco kit. We decided to grab a nice family lunch here to celebrate my mothers birthday. Imagine our surprise when we were greeted by Joy the Clown!! Apparently Joy is there every other Sunday with free face painting and balloons for the kids!! This little unexpected surprise was a great way to start of visit. We ordered our lunch and were delighted with how quick and attentive the staff was with our food. The food itself was just ok. Not bad, not great but just ok. The food has been very good in years past, but the restaurant has changed substantially since 2023 (& not in a good way). One of the Bartenders is clearly not a "people person"; snapping at customers, & is obviously not suited to work in the service or hospitality industry. I personally overheard her call a customer "Rude" for having the audacity to ask for a napkin. I also noticed that this restaurant location is not as clean as it used to be. It's possible that I was there on a bad day, but there are many other good restaurants in Elizabeth City to try. I do not recommend this particular Plaza Azteca. Try the another Plaza Azteca location or the other Tex-Mex place down the street. read more

What once was a new and exciting addition to E.City is slowly starting to lose it's luster. The most unsettling discrepancy was the decay of the ceiling. There are smoke trails of dust coming from every air vent. The ceiling tiles are all swollen and bowing down as if they have been soaked in water. There are clearly signs of what appears to be mold growing (see the picture). The upholstery is starting to rip and there are exposed nails holding the fabric up in a half hearted attempt to fix them. The bathrooms were on the dirtier side and the paper towel. Water tasted like treated city tap water. Ordered empanadas which looked great on the menu. What showed up looked like premade grocery store frozen empanadas that were cold in the middle... see pic. Went in at 6:30 on a Wednesday night and the place was empty! We were seated quickly, waitress came over a few minutes later and took our drink order. I asked for a top shelf traditional lime margarita made without a mix, standard order in a Mexican restaurant. The waitress had to come back 4 times to ask additional questions for my drink! Salt or no salt, small or large, skinny or organic and I don't even remember what the last question was! It took quite a while to get the drink due to the repeated stops at the table. After all that though the drink was good and had a nice refreshing flavor. My husband ordered a Paloma and the waitress didn't seem to know what that drink was either and he had to point it out on the menu. For food I had the pollo Sonora which was slightly greasy but had a good flavor, very small, flat piece of chicken but tons of onions. My husband had a dinner combo with a taco and burrito, nothing special but he was satisfied. There were two other members in our party, one had a fajita salad which she enjoyed and the other was a taco plate with 3 tacos, rice and beans. The food came out quickly and we all received what we ordered. The place appeared clean, restrooms were not used by our party. I don't feel the need to run back and eat there again but it wasn't horrible. I forget to check how much I paid for my drink so can't comment on the price. read more

I try to be patient because I realize that restaurants are struggling with staffing issues. The server was hustling, but brought something that was not ordered. It was returned but was included on the bill. Because the server did not understand English that well, she could not understand the issue. The manager was approached and asked to eliminate the charge since the item was returned and not consumed. He began yelling and denied the request. Another friend attempted to explain it to him and he threatened to increase the bill. I understand that some people complain just to try to get a break of some kind, but this was not the case, and the manager's behavior was intolerable. Never will any of us eat there again. By the way the chicken was tough and the bathrooms were very nasty! Definitely a place to avoid since there are so many other great Mexican options in Elizabeth City. read more

She told me she didn't like it and I didn't think much of it because sometimes kids are picky with new items. But as we were finishing up, I took a bite and it was AWFUL. I had another person at our table taste it and they agreed that it was way too salty and would have been sent back if we realized it earlier. I told the server who seemed like she didn't believe us like we just wanted a free meal and made a comment like "if it was that bad I'm sure she would have mentioned it earlier" Well she DID mention it earlier, I just didn't realize it was due to a cooking error. Not being from Elizabeth City and only in town for work we asked what the best Mexican restaurant was we were told 3 amigos is the place to go. However they were to crowded for us because we only wanted some good food a good drink and to get back to our hotel. We had to stop at Walmart and noticed Plaza Azteca on our way in, it was not crowded so we gave it a shot. My wife ordered the OMG Nachos. They were different. Served with bacon, they had a flavor not usually equated with your usual Nachos. All I am going to say is this...if you are serving frozen white tomatoes to your customers at least have the decency to not put them in the pico de gallo...that makes it very obvious. My chicken was decent in the Jose burrito but I cannot eat anything with tomatoes from this restaurant. The salsa tasted like it had some water in it. My wife got vegetarian enchiladas and has been feeling ill all evening. I would avoid this place but if you have to eat here I would get something very basic without their guacamole, tomatoes, or sour cream (sour cream should not be squirted out like ranch) that just isn't right. read more

Best "Mexican" food in Elizabeth City. Very extensive menu even if you're not a mexican food fan. Love the Blackened Kale Salad - the spicy dressing is so good. They have great drink specials including $1.50 margaritas and a bucket of six beers for $8. Not a bad deal! Thought we would give this location a try. I was really excited to see it had finally opened after so long under construction. I can only say it was a bit disappointing. The hostess seating us was a bit low energy to say the least....not chipper, cheerful, not a smile at all. Okay. Not a good start. The booth we were seated in had some serious structural issues. The seats had absolutely no support at all. We sunk up down so deep my shoulders were even with the tabletop, lol. Mind you, no one in our party is close to overweight. I had to sit on my feet to prop myself up high enough to eat. The music was deafening. The AC was so low that it had to be 65 in there. All six of us just pretty much wanted to eat so we could get out of there. Bathrooms needed a little attention. Not sure they had been cleaned from the previous night. About the food. Guacamole, table side prep...A+. Great flavor, fresh ingredients. The only reason I gave this place 3 stars. The guacamole saved the review. Menu is extensive. Food presentation is gorgeous. Food...not so great. Looks pretty, but is really not great. Fajitas a mixture of overcooked, dry, hard meat and undercooked vegetables. Burritos, enchiladas and tacos were said to be just okay. Chips were greasy. Don't bother with the white sauce. It is really watered down and makes more of a mess than anything. Salsa was nicely flavored but very mild. Will we go back? Probably not.
