It's Cinco de Mayo! What better way for a foodie to celebrate this day than by enjoying some Mexican food. Unfortunately one of the Mexican restaurants in the area has closed down, and the most popular one was inexplicably not open (as least so said DoorDash), so I tried this one. Actually I visited this unassuming little place (think food truck fused into a building with a handful of equally unassuming indoor seating options) and the food wasn't bad, so I figured I'd try it today. It certainly beats Taco Bell! Actually it was pretty good. It was more of a 3.5 but until we can give 1/2 stars I rounded up to a 4 in honor of Cinco de Mayo! My favorite dish was the chicken tostada, followed surprisingly by the fish burrito. The chips were pretty nice. The "hot" sauce/salsa was disappointing because it was anything but hot - in fact more sweet than hot. I had a variety four pack of tacos but was a bit disappointed they were on soft tortilla shells when I hoped for hard shells. If there was an option it wasn't readily discernible. Lastly, the empanadas were solid but nothing special. This place is near Dickinson College and serves a vital role of food variety for the area. It's not special but it certainly is not a place to avoid. In fact, if you are in the area and craving Mexican, give it a try. It's more hit than miss and will leave you satisfied overall. read more

After moving to Carlisle, Taqueria Laurita quickly became a staple in the rotation, consistently delivering great tacos, burritos, etc. all without breaking the budget. Definitely a local gem. Went here yesterday and was a bit anxious due to all the 1 star reviews this place has been getting, turns out those were just a bunch of people from southern California or people who got lost on their way to a fancy dinner at taco bell. As a Carlisle resident I can say I was very pleased with the freshness of the food, the staff as super friendly and helpful and they had this drink made from hibiscus that was delicious! (It tastes like cranberry which I can't have so it was an interesting substitute) Ok for the haters. Yes, the tacos are small. They are supposed to be that's how Spanish and Mexican meals are prepared (with the exception of paella) that's huge usually. But they are small so you can try many kinds. Once more you will not be getting 10 of the same taco crunchy or soft - these are real. Plus you can get empanadas. Down side? I'm not sure how difficult it is to ruin Mexican food, but Taqueria Laurita managed to do it. Disappointing. If you are in Carlisle looking for Mexican food, you are close enough to go Tania's in Aspers, PA. It's much more worth your time and money, and will deliver the element of delight. The only thing authentic about the Taqueria Laurita is the portion size. As a So Cal native and veteran of more taquerias than I can count, this place doesn't earn the name. The good: fresh soft corn tortillas The rest: the salsa was almost a great start until I realized it's no different than the Tomatillo at Moe's. What place can call itself a taqueria without carne asada tacos being a staple? This is the main dish at most taquerias. Taquerias shouldn't have tacos that cost $2.50, when it's the size of your palm, The flavor was severely lacking. Cilantro and onion should pop when mixed with the corn tortilla and meat choice, the only flavor saver was the regular salsa they serve. Overall, the biggest waste of money in town for a meal. If you aren't a taqueria regular like I am maybe you will like it, if you are you need to go to Harrisburg. Tres Hermanos has the best AUTHENTIC MEXICAN food in the area. Having spent a lot of time in San Antonio TX, my wife and I know good Mexican food (at least we think we do) The food here is good, not good for 'outside of Tejas' but quality ingredients cooked with love and skill. But that's perfect since it provides nice seating next to a window that looks out onto one of the main streets of Carlisle. We went here on a Friday night for dinner. For as packed as it was, I thought the food would have been better. I was hungry when we placed our order and I was hungry and disappointed when we left. The Atmosphere: The restaurant is small. Maybe 10 tables or less. The walls are painted bright blue and there is very little decor. Patrons order at a counter located at the back of the restaurant. The menu is printed on a brightly colored tri-folded piece of paper. There is a cooler off to the right filled with an array of Mexican sodas and bottled water. The Food: I ordered a trio of tacos, empanadas Del Dia and a bottle of Apple Soda. The tacos were: Pollo y Pepitas (Chicken with salsa verde and pumpkin seeds), Al Pastor (Pork with pineapple and ancho chiles) and Chorizo y Papas (Mexican sausage and potato). Both the chicken and Chorizo were gristly. The empanadas were tastier than the tacos. But that's not saying much. The word bland comes to mind when describing the food here. The salsa/sauces lacked flavor and heat. It was very watered down and not appetizing at all. The woman working behind the counter said the salsa was spicy. It was not.
