This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Merrimack Valley area. Love their flag enchiladas and margaritas with chambord. The burritos are also very good. Only ordered the guac once and thought it was good but not worth the $$ unless you are with a group of 4 or more because it is a lot. On our most recent visit, we had the nicest server ever--Beto. Perfect amount of friendliness and he was a real trooper at keeping our iced tea coming as we guzzled them down. That's one more plus--good iced tea. The only negative to this place is how busy it gets in the evenings. For that reason, we usually come for lunch on the weekends or before 5 for dinner. Very disappointed with the new ownership. Menu is different and food was disappointing. Went on a Saturday night and the place was completely dead. I ordered the Azteca Salad. Came with no dressing, so when I asked for dressing I ordered the avocado lime and it was completely tasteless. My salad came with 4 small shrimp and very dry chicken. Literally only saw maybe one slice of avocado. I was charged 6 bucks more for a salad with barely anything on it. Probably won't go back. I didn't care for this place. I went here on a Saturday night with friends and I realize that it was extremely busy (and they don't take reservations, which they should consider doing) but they seated us next to two women who were celebrating a birthday and very drunk and LOUD. I didn't ask for us to be moved because we probably wouldn't have gotten another table, but they were very disruptive throughout our meal. Not the restaurant's fault, but it kind of put a downer on the evening until they left. Like others have mentioned on here, my burrito had a melted slice of white American cheese on top and that was a turnoff. The meal was OK but nothing spectacular; for really good Mexican I recommend Casa Blanca in Andover or even the Margaritas chain now in Lexington. It's hard for me to respect a restaurant that goes the cheap route by putting American cheese on their dishes. read more

Chips and drinks are really the only good thing here now. We used to come weekly when it first opened but it keeps going down hill every time we go back. The food is pretty bad and it never comes out the same way twice.. Different toppings or cheeses used each time. They really like to melt American cheese on top of everything for some reason... It's pretty gross. The lobster quesadilla is actually artificial crab meat and the rice is tasteless and clumpy. And on top of that, the service generally is poor. We keep hoping it will be better the next time we go, but it doesn't. We probably won't go back again which is a shame since it's so close to our home. read more

We've been coming to Plaza Azteka for quite a while and always enjoy the food and the service. There are several other places in the area, but this is where we keep coming back to, even though it is further for us to travel to. The guacamole is made to order table-side and is always excellent. Their servings are good size but not outrageous and have been well prepared and presented. The ambiance can be a little bit loud with the tile floors but even on busy nights, and they can get busy, it is still comfortable. The tables are authentically styles with inlaid iron work and dark wood and the decor is pleasantly southwest but not cheesy. On some nights they have a roving guitar player who my daughter loves that adds a nice break from most places Muzak or TVs. read more

I'm a very picky Mexican food eater as I've experienced Mexican food all over the U.S. This definitely has a chain feel and flavor. It was also Very Bland. I got the chicken fajitas and it wasn't good at all. Stale and dry tortillas. The only tasty thing was a cheesy, meaty dip on the appetizer list with satisfactory chips. The waiter even added a pelligrino to our order at the end that was suppose to be for another large party and it was a hassle to get it removed from our already swiped card. The atmosphere is great. On Sundays especially, they have mariachi live with a woman that walks around and she is very very good. The food is also very good. But not consistent, sometimes it's okay. The guacamole , if you order it, is made fresh right in front of you. However, it's not the greatest or consistent in taste. It's hit or miss. He also has a big tip jar on his cart pointed in your face, so you may tip this guy for something that takes awhile for this guy to make, and may not even be good. I just want guac that is delish...I don't want to wait 20 minutes and feel pressured to pay more for it. It is unique though, and he was a nice guy. The waitstaff has ranged from somewhat grumpy to really really nice. But they are at least efficient and quick. I would not recommend takeout. Understandably, it is tough to make good Mexican takeout, it can get soggy and messy pretty easily. But takeout from here made more than a few people sick to be a coincidence, and it was a sloppy wet mess on more than one occasion. That's the case with many incredible restaurants though, so I can't judge too harshly on that. read more

Margaritas were great!!! They were huge- so big I wish I had a to go cup because I couldn't finish mine. The food was decent, our party had three different entrees and everyone enjoyed them all. Only complaint was the beans, they were boring and appeared to be from a can. I would prefer fresh beans with fresh spice and vegetables to flavor them. The atmosphere was nice- a lot of decorations and it was both family friendly, and adult bar friendly at the same time. I will definitely be going back- and getting me a 'rita for sure! read more

The only reason this review is getting 2 stars is because the food came out hot, quickly and delicious. But this might have been the WORST service I've ever had, in any restaurant ever. It took over 10 minutes just to get greeted by the server. I didn't even get his name because after over 10 minutes, he came over and all he said was "drinks?". There were only 5 tables in his area. There is no excuse for that type of pathetic hospitality. After another 10 minutes, he took our order and we ordered everything at once because God knows how long it would take for him to come back. When I was telling him my order, I noticed he would stop writing so I made sure to repeat myself so he knew exactly what I wanted. I asked for beans instead of rice and extra tortillas. After about 15 minutes, the food came out and it was awesome but guess what I didn't get? Beans and extra tortillas. And I couldn't ask for these things because he NEVER came to check on us after the food was delivered! Not once! I had to ask another server for the tortillas and he brought them right out. My fiance had to hunt him down to ask for take out containers and the check which is just ridiculous. I'm a server and I always leave over 20% and thats why it pained me to leave him under 10% and he didn't even deserve that. I don't know if you need to have a better hiring process or a better training process. I love Plaza Azteca and I'll be back but if he's gonna ever be my server, I'll just walk right out. read more

Was pleased to see that they offered a fresh guacamole made table side. That was certainly the highlight of the meal. I had an interesting dish served inside of a pineapple. A little too heavy on the grilled veggies and not enough chicken or steak. My wife's California fish tacos weren't bad but the side of rice on the plate was very bland. The tres leches cake was decent but I wouldn't order it again. The service was brisk (as soda refills were brought without us even having to ask) but the server was more of an order taker who was in-and-out with almost no interaction. For the price, I was pleased. It was a quick and affordable meal but nothing I would go out of my way for. read more

Got there around 6pm on a Saturday night and it seems like there isn't enough parking. I walked through the crowded entry way and put my name on the list (group of 8) was handed a pager and was told it was going to be about 1hr to 1hr 1/2 (doh!). The small waiting area inside was completely packed with people so i waited in the unheated(?) seating area where there are benches and plenty of other people shivering. So after 1hr and 10min the pager goes off and my group is all excited to get in and get warm (and eat too). but when i showed them my flashing pager, they told me "We were testing the pager... Your next on the list." So we waiting more, they had some guy doing magic tricks and he came out to entertain us. Which is nice and all but my feet are completely numb, i've been waiting over an hour and half and angry about the false alarm; Magic doesn't warm my feet or feed me. So the wait was just over 1hr and 45min and they told us we would get a free app, which we did not get. the seating was a bit tight and the limited amount of table real estate made the experience unpleasant. The service wasn't too bad and the fresh guacamole is a nice touch. Most of the menu looked like standard Mexican fare with standard drink selection. I'd say the prices are decent for the food quality, but management needs to get more organized. I would not recommend this for a group larger than 4. I will not be back here anytime soon... maybe once the newness of the place wears out and they have time to figure out how to handle customers. read more

I love the mild Tacos salad in a shell. Their Margarita's are the best in the area. Atmosphere and decor is Mexican and Spanish. Love the servers. They are very pleasant, entertaining, and always ready to explain the dish and make it "your" way. read more

4 of us went here on a Friday evening, and were very pleased with everything. The service was a little slow in getting our first drinks, but as a mild alcoholic, I like my drinks fast! But beyond that, everything was great. We ordered the tableside guacamole which was delicious. We ordered it "medium" and while it was a little spicy for 1 of us in the party, everyone else was fine with it. 1 order=one avocado, so be aware if you want more than 1 avocado's worth of guac. For dinner, I ordered the carnitas which were top notch. The pork was juicy and tender, and not dry in the least. The rice and beans were a good side, but the carnitas were plenty on their own. I also ordered a tamale on the side to see how they were, and it was also delicious. For dessert, we ordered the churros and some fried cheeecake thing. Both were real good. No complaints at all. Drinks were also real good. No skimping on the booze at all. Margaritas were ordered by all, and 2 of them put me where I needed to be. If you don't like mixed drinks, the large beers are cheap ($7.50 I think for domestic), and about the size of a small child. Picture if the big beers at the 99 took steriods for a few cycles. Entrees were affordable...anywhere from $10-20. The carnitas were $12, if I remember correctly. Large margaritas were around $12, and desserts were roughly $7. Very affordable for most people. This area has been starved for a good Mexican place for a while, and this fits perfectly. The wait was around 40 minutes, but for 7pm on a Friday, what do you expect? We would have liked to get in the bar for a drink while waiting, but it was too busy. I think the bar is a little on the small side, but didn't detract much from my experience. If you are sick of going to Mexican places were they cover your food in sour cream, cheese and salsa and call it "Mexican Food", then this is the place for you. I think its on par with Agave in Newburyport, or Ole in Cambridge. read more

I got the flag enchilada. this comes with a serving of rice and beans. the beans were so salty I couldn't even eat them. one enchilada had cheese inside - not even melted all the way. the others had shredded chicken and shredded beef. just okay, though - nothing spectacular. I don't remember what my boyfriend got, all I remember is him eating barely a 1/4 of it and pushing it to the side because it was so bad. our young daughter got the cheese quesadilla (which you can't really screw up) and fries. the fries tasted like old oil and fish - yes, fish!! Plaza Azteca has poor customer service. Last night at dinner there was weak service, forgettable food, empty drinks and all round non-existent management. We had an issue with service last night and management should have simply tried to make an effort to make it right. Plaza Azteca is seriously lacking in the service department and does not deserve your dining dollars when so many places happily communicate with guests, deal with concerns, listen to complaints, and try to make customers feel welcome and appreciated. My waitress was very rude and they brought out the wrong food and gave me additude and telling me that I ordered The Fajitas but I really ordered the enchilada. I have been here before and it was amazing. I wanted the chipotle enchiladas but just with beef and I got all chicken. The worst experience eve. So the answer is no.... Do not eat here! When I first walked in the door to a 15 minute wait on a Wednesday night... We were greeted with a beeper and the realistic sights and sounds of Mexico. Loud disrespectful kids... fake stucco walls... metal roofs.... and cheesy music. After being seated in 7 am Boston traffic jam of tables we were greeted by our waiter... authentic waiter by the way like straight off the boat or over the fence authentic. RAÚL forgot the chips salsa and miricale whip sauce, and visited our table at least 12-15 times while I choked down my lack luster, bland food. So if your looking for mediocre at best food...served with heaping helping of broken english and enjoy using ear plugs to hear yourself think then Plaza Azteca is your kinda spot.... but it will never again be mine. read more

Despite the fun and flashy atmosphere, I was a bit let down by the quality of the food. This seems like a great place to go if you are looking for a fun looking place with pizazz, but the food falls a bit short. I think the biggest disappointment for me was the cheese... everything tasted kind of weird and plasticky... almost like melted Velveeta. Food presentation was also kind of uninspired, so not only was my meal kind of unappetizing in taste, but it wasn't scoring any points in looks either. "Average mexican restaurant" pretty much sums this one up. The food is good but nothing extraordinary. I usually get the chicken fajitas but I've tried a few other things too. i do like their jumbo margaritas and their chips and salsa too. The guacamole bowl that they made tableside is pretty cool. The decor is good, but the service can be a bit lousy. There's no huge rush for me to go to back, but I'm sure I will anyway because there just aren't that many solid restaurants in this area. read more

Last week, my friend and I were looking for a place to go with our young daughters for a casual dinner and settled on Plaza Azteca since everyone liked Mexican food and we both had decent experiences there. BE AWARE - on a Friday night, make reservations - it gets REALLY busy and you might have a wait otherwise! We ordered guacamole and our dinners. Our dinners came out, but no sign of the guacamole...we let the waitress know. She apologized and asked if we still wanted it. The stuff is so damn yummy, of course we did! 3 minutes later, we had guacamole. My friend ordered a glass of pinot noir. A glass of pinot grigio came out. She mentioned that she had ordered the noir, and the waitress said "This IS. Ours is black." My friend and I had a good laugh - after the waitress left to correct the issue of course! As we were wrapping up, the waitress said she took the guacamole off the bill AND she gave the girls a free desert to share. We were pleasantly surprised!! As for the food? I can't speak for anyone else (my daughter gt a basic taco - hard to screw THAT up!) but my carne asada was very tender and flavorful. read more

Went at around 5:30 on Friday night. It was very busy but we got a table right away (because we were willing to accept what ended up being one of the worst tables, right outside where servers came in and out of the kitchen constantly.) Waited quite a while for our drink orders to be taken - was starting to suspect we'd been forgotten about. But then we got our drinks quickly and made our food orders. The server really pushed appetizers but we were on a schedule and didn't have time. Food came very quickly but was slightly below average. We didn't even know what it was that came as a side with my husband's chicken stuffed with chorizo... was it potatoes? Or refried beans? It was a pale color and tasted a little creamy and salty but we could not identify it. My Azteca salad had nicely seasoned chicken and shrimp, but the cheese seemed to be melted American (buh?) and there were bits of OMG SPICY pepper/chile mixed in with the greens that I could not for the life of me correctly ID so I could pick them out. They were really small bits. Waited FOREVER for someone to notice that we were done eating. Okay, not really forever, but it felt like a long, long time. At least 10 minutes. Server took away our plates and brought the bill. The decor was nice but there were too many tables crammed too close together. Every time a staff member or customer had to pass behind our table, they bumped into my chair. It was really annoying. I have no interest in going back. read more

I had driven by Plaza Azteca so many times over the last few years, & I finally tried it out a couple of weeks ago. I have to way, I was very pleased with my experience & I already want to go back! We came during the day, so my friend & I were seated quickly. I noticed right away how extensive the menu was, so there's a lot to choose from. We received chips & salsa, which was very good. We also ordered some queso cheese dip, & that was okay. (Preferred the salsa though.) There was someon going around making fresh guacamole table-side, which was really cool. The only reason why I didn't try it is because I'm not a fan of guacamole, but I may give this a shot next time. I started off with a margarita, just something simple that was already pre-fabbed from the menu. They have a Make Your Own Margarita section, where there is a LOT of options if you'd rather customize it a bit, but the margarita I got (El Patron) wasn't bad. It was served in a nice margarita glass, not in one of those large/heavy glasses I often see restaurants using. My friend ordered some nachos for his meal, & I ordered the San Miguel enchilada plate. Both of our plates came out very quickly & nice & hot, & the portions were very generous. I didn't ask him specifically how his food was, but since he ate the whole thing, I'm assuming it was just fine. I thoroughly enjoyed my enchiladas, & the rice & beans that came with it were also yummy. I ordered one more margarita before I left. The first one I got was a large, so I opted for a small since we were wrapping up our meal. Turns out the small is only $2 less than the large, so for the money spent, I'd recommend just getting a large size margarita. (I also had expected a smaller margarita glass, but was instead served my drink in a smaller goblet-like glass. Not a problem at all, as I know each restaurant is different, but thought I'd mention it in case anyone was wondering) Overall, I enjoyed it. Noise level was what I was expecting. I enjoyed my food. Service was very quick. My drinks were enjoyable. We timed our visit when the place wasn't packed, so parking wasn't a problem. I definitely want to come back again. read more

Two of us showed up for an early Saturday supper at 5PM and the parking lot was packed. We were able to get a nice high-backed cushioned booth right away. For some reason the booth struck me a comfy. We're not drinkers, but his place must serve good drinks--everyone had a huge one. The chips were plentiful and we were offered more several times. The salsa was good, maybe a smoky tone to it with a little kick. The sour cream dip had a sweet vinegary start and a hot finish. Mrs. had a mushroomy mushroom quesadilla that was "OK." I had Chile Colorado, It was good. Not quite what I expected (steak tips) but good nonetheless. The accompanying refried beans were very good. Not super, but a good value. read more

I gotta give is place credit, right at the front, they set up a margarita bar right at the front door, so when you find put there's a 30 min wait you can get a drink you were gonna have anyway, and not have to wade through the bar crowd. Really good food we thought. Not "fine" dining but tasty and high quality feeling. Guacamole is made at your table if you want and the maker does it with quite a flair. Decent prices, 5 of us ate for $71 including 2 sangrias. They even had a magician making (free) amazing balloon sculptured for the kids on the Sat night when we went. Overall we really liked the experience and the food. One small con was that it was very noisy but wasn't really a problem per se... Just a lively atmosphere. read more

My husband and I checked this place out for the first time today after hearing about the amazing guacamole. We lived in CA for a few years and are huge fans of gauc and mexican food! Since moving back to NH we have yet to find a Mexican restaurant that lives up to the west coast fare...till today! You need to go here and order the guacamole. They make it right at your table fresh and it is delicious! The atmosphere is really nice (doesn't look like much from the outside) and the service was great. The menu has a great mix of typical Mexican dishes as well as eclectic dishes. My husband had the chicken and chorizo burrito- the burrito San Jose- which was amazing!
