Service is straight to the point and paced nicely to not be rushed but also around when you need anything. For our first dinner on our Grand Circle trip, we went with Plaza Bonita, the Mexican restaurant right outside our hotel. The food options in general in the Grand Canyon are grim, so we didn't expect too much, only being lured in by the promise of 10% off due to our hotel stay at the Red Feather Lodge. The food was even worse than our low expectations. Walking in for dinner on Saturday during the shoulder season, it wasn't very busy at all. And yet we felt like we were ignored for a good while before we were able to place our order. Service in general was very slow, with the waitress disappearing for several long stretches of time. For example, it took about 20 minutes to get our order in after we had sat down and then another 20 minutes after we had finished to get the check. At least the chips and salsa arrived quickly. Chips and Salsa (Complementary) - These are standard yellow corn tortilla chips, with tons of tiny crushed chips on the bottom and larger whole ones on top. The salsa is slightly spicy, tangy, has plenty of crunchy chopped onion and tender tomatoes mixed in along with fresh herbs. Pretty standard stuff but tasty. Pork Carnitas ($29.99) - When this dish came out we were not sure what exactly we had received. What was on the plate certainly didn't look like carnitas; instead it looked like some kind of pork stew. We flagged the waitress down and she insisted they were carnitas. Strange. The "carnitas" consists of cubed and stewed pork mixed with celery and peppers. The cubes are compressed and cannot be shredded apart. There is a tiny bit of texture on some pieces that indicate that they had been fried at some point, but they are mostly tender instead. The texture reminds me of commercial pork that's been injected with saline and preservatives. It's very lean but the stewing liquid adds tons of rich, deep, flavors to the dish. Unfortunately the pork itself doesn't taste good. There's a strange off flavor, perhaps of older or freezer burned meat. The rice and beans are pretty normal. The rice is moist but each fried grain can be felt. It has appropriate salty tomato flavor. The beans are tender and mostly mashed, a little on the silky/watery side with some pieces of bean remaining. They are seasoned appropriately. Given the texture on the beans I wonder if they are from a can and/or direct from a commercial supplier. This dish is served with four small flour tortillas which are the worst I have ever seen at a Mexican restaurant. They are completely dried out, glued together into a stack. Clearly no care was given to storage. Any Mexican restaurant should be ashamed at serving the quality of the tortillas we received. Finally, there's some pico de gallo and guac to create some "carnitas" tacos. The guac is quite tangy from citrus juice. No matter what the waitress said, I don't think this dish was "Pork Carnitas." Even after leaving the restaurant, I tried to do some research to see if there is some regional variation of carnitas that could match this dish. I found nothing. From the pictures of another review 10 years ago, I see Plaza Bonita used to serve real carnitas - shredded deep fried pork. The switch to cubed pork must be a cost cutting measure. (1/5) Combo #2, Enchilada, Burrito, Green Corn Tamale, Shredded Beef ($24.99) - I'm not sure why anyone would order Combo #1 when the #2 is only a dollar more! The main difference between the enchilada and burrito is the tortilla used. The former has a corn tortilla, soaked a bit until soft and tender. There's a bit of standard red enchilada sauce poured on top, followed by just a bit of cheese. The burrito uses a toothsome and pliable flour tortilla that is rather tough and requires some work to get through with a knife. Both items I chose to get stuffed with shredded beef, which is actually pretty decent. It's very tender, very flavorful since they've been stewed for a while in some kind of sauce. The green corn tamale seems to be masa mixed with whole sweet corn kernels, and green chile skins (only a tiny bit of each). They add a lot of sugar, so the whole thing kind of tastes like eating sweet cornbread. The tamale is otherwise tender in texture and easy to eat. The texture is like that of an extruded masa, like it was prepared commercially in a factory. My guess based on the texture and appearance is that this isn't made in house. (3/5) Plaza Bonita was really disappointing. The pricing is absolutely ridiculous for what we received. They serve very low quality food for obscene prices. We were looking for a place for dinner after a long day of driving and having explored Grand Canyon National Park briefly. Most of the local places didn't have great reviews, but this one had better than most. Bonus was we were staying at the Red Feather Lodge right next door, which offers meal discounts with proof of room key. We didn't have to wait for a table. Service was great. They were prompt with our drink refills and chips and salsa. The salsa was great! The place looks a bit dated, but was still a nice place to sit down for a meal. The menu is large and extensive, guaranteeing something for everyone. My youngest got the birria plate, my oldest got the camarones Vallarta and I decided to go with the chile Colorado. Located right outside of the Grand Canyon's South Rim on SR-64/US-180 near Wendy's with plenty of parking. Our hotel was just a short walk away, so this spot was super convenient for dinner. We opted for takeout since we had our dog (although they have outside seating). We ordered their 'Bonita Salad' with steak and a 'Chimichanga' with ground beef. The salad was tender, though slightly under-seasoned steak. The Chimichanga tasted great but it was packed on a large catering platter rather than a standard to-go container, which made the beans a bit messy by the time I got it back to the hotel. They also included a bag of chips and salsa with our takeout which was a nice and delicious surprise. Prices at checkout were higher than those listed on their online menu. The tortilla soup and the steak burrito were very good however their ground beef is really weird. It's ground super fine like Taco Bell but it doesn't have the spices that makes Taco Bell's ground beef taste Ok ( it you like taco bell). Service was fine and the restaurant has nice decorations. They are open a little later than other restaurants in this town, so it was quite busy when we were there at 8:30. They are however, quite expensive, $25 for a burrito, that's a lot of money. Service was a standout: complimentary chips and salsa, food came out incredibly fast within 7 minutes, and our waitress was extremely attentive by checking in on us multiple times throughout the meal. I ordered the carne asada plate, and while the beef was a bit chewy and could've used more seasoning, the sides helped round out the dish nicely. The Spanish rice was flavorful, and the refried beans were topped off with cheese and salty enough to complement the plate. The plate also came with four corn tortillas, which were a great addition. The guacamole was fresh and chunky, just to my liking. 3.5 stars. Their main draw is their location right outside Grand Canyon. Ambiance is festive and colorful. The tables are a bit small for the large plates they provide, but that was just my observation. The place was pretty empty when we got there. We ordered the tacos al Pastor, pollo en mole, a house margarita and a lager. We got complimentary chips with two salsas (super spicy and normal) for the table. The food was decent, not outstanding but better than ok. The tacos were solid but the al pastor could do with more marination. The pollo en mole was good. I liked the tortillas and the mole wasn't too sweet (I don't like mole that is on the sweet side). The chicken was fine but I enjoyed the mole sauce more. The rice and refried beans were pretty average. The complimentary chips and salsa were also average. The salsas were not very spicy. The lager was fine but the margarita was disappointing because it was very flat. The menu is expensive for the quality of food, but I guess that is what you get for eating in a tourist town. My best friend, Senor Wentzl, and I gave the hens a break today, and each had French toast w sausage links (the big ones, like Shaquille O'Neal's thumb). And potatoes. On a roadtrip through Arizona and sadly this was a standout for probably the worst meal we had. We ordered the guac which although tasted fine had a bunch of brown spots all over. Unfortunately my soup was cold when it came out. My friends was hot. I guess they forgot to microwave mine? After I said something they brought me a "new" one that was hot (again clearly has just been microwaved...) It just grossed me out when I started thinking about how long that soup had been sitting out at room temp for. I know there's a very very very limited amount of options to eat at in this area especially at night but have some pride in what you're serving. Plaza Bonita is a great place to stop by if you're craving Mexican food near the Grand Canyon. Everything we ordered was delicious and our server was friendly! If you're staying at the Red Feather Lodge, you get a 10% discount which is nice. We ordered the taquitos and the combo #1. The taquitos were very tasty with a side of guacamole and cheese on top. I liked that they were not too soft or too crispy. They also had plenty of beef inside. For the combo #1, you are able to choose 2 items and I chose the chile relleno and chicken enchilada. I liked that I was able to customize my order by getting veggies instead of rice. The combo also came with refried beans. I was very impressed with the chile relleno! The chile was cooked well, had plenty of cheese, and a yummy sauce on top. The refried beans were another standout. They were not too salty and had a nice consistency. The drink I ordered was the Coco Luna and it was good but very strong. You get more of the tequila taste rather than coconut. I liked that they included little pieces of shredded coconut in the drink. I also liked that they bring you complimentary chips and salsa. Their service was excellent as our server checked in on us a few times and made sure we had everything we needed. The restaurant had a lot of seating areas inside. They have both tables and booths. However, the restaurant does look older and could use some upgrades. For example, to their carpet. This restaurant is right next to the Red Feather Lodge and there is plenty of parking in front. One of the best parts was getting complimentary chips and salsa as soon as we were seated, which is always a great way to start the meal. However, the service was a bit of a mixed bag. I ordered a tall beer but was served a short one. I pointed it out to our server, who said she would bring the correct size right away, but it never happened. When the bill arrived, I mentioned it again, and she simply said they should have already swapped it for me. The beer was ICE cold though so that was a major plus. We went to Plaza Bonita for a late breakfast, and overall the experience was disappointing--solidly in the "meh" category. Not bad, but not really good. The buffet was poorly stocked, and we had to ask several times just to get our drinks. It definitely felt like they weren't prepared for breakfast service. We did leave full so that's good. That said, the manager handled our feedback very well. He listened, took it seriously, and made every effort to fix things. He was generous in making it right, which we genuinely appreciated. One of us ordered the French toast à la carte while the others stuck with the buffet. Here visiting the Grand Canyon and this was nearby our hotel. We actually came here twice. They do give you unlimited complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered their cheese dip to go with our chips as well. It was okay. My husband ordered the Carne Asada burrito. He enjoyed it but on the second visit he opted to get it wet and it was much better. I had the Camarones al Diabla on my first visit. On my second visit I had the Camarones de Ajo which I enjoyed more. My husband had lemonade on both visits and I had the patron margarita on my first visit. It was okay but on my second visit I had the coronita margarita with tahin on the rim. It was amazing. I love the old school Mexican vibe. It was pretty crowded but no wait. The restaurant is rather large. Perfect for families and get togethers. The service was great and fast both times. I liked this place so much I went here twice with my friend during our two day stay! The first time I got the Fajita Salad with steak and it was really good! Jam packed with onions and bell peppers, steak was really good too! The second night I got the chili Verde soup and the Mexican shrimp cocktail cold. The soup was fantastic! I would order that again for sure. Thick soup and well seasoned, bold taste, thick chunks of pork. The soup was close to a delicious gravy. I was really scooping the bottom of the bowl at the end. The Mexican shrimp cocktail was good. Nothing to write home about, but it was good. My friend was so impressed by the Deluxe Burrito with pork chili Verde that he ordered it both days. He also ordered the Albondigas soup and this is my only knock on it because I tried some of his: parts of it were actually just barely lukewarm.
