I was looking for a place close by to purchase some Charleston items for our corporate gift. I stumbled upon Pluff Mud Mercantile while looking for Callie's Hot Biscuit items. They have a good selection of made in Charleston food items: hot sauce, jams, jellies, tea, salt, biscuit mix, cookies, honey, just to name a few. I found the prices to be very reasonable without the arduous drive through downtown to find street or paid for parking. They also have Charleston made tea towels, soaps, lotions, shirts, jewelry, and signage. I also found out they offer soap and candle classes in which you can make your own. I would recommend anyone looking for some great gifts for themselves or others, check this place out. While it may look tiny, they truly have amazing things here. read more

Yayyyy my 300th Review! THIS IS CHARLESTON! More than just candles, Pluff Mud is a smorgasbord of surcee items that you may not be able to find anywhere else! Soaps, teas, sauces, shirts, jewelry, and much, much more! If you are looking for a gift with a touch of the Low Country and love, you need to check this place out! But the candles... the signature candles are always amazingly fragrant. Handpoured, wooden wicks, and I believe they are 100% Soy, Cornbread, Sweet tobacco, Baked Apple, campfire and back porch are some of the scents you can expect to find. They average I think around $10-30 or so, but they usually have a section up front with some nicely discounted candles as well. I also believe they hold classes there if you are ever interested in learning more. I love coming here for the great smells and the great service! read more

Great products coupled with friendly service keeps me coming back here as often as I can when I visit Charleston. They keep their store updated with new soap fragrances while keeping their classics like Kiss My Grits soap. The owner is nice and knowledgeable about all her products. I stopped by this store for the first time a few days ago just to see what they carried. The shop owner is very friendly and very helpful. She makes her own soaps andd candles and eve offers classes. I have sensitive skin and can not use many brand name or locally made hygeine products. She had some suggestions and so far the oatmeal bar she makes has worked wonderfully. This particular bar seems to only have 3 ingrediants which has not broken me out or left a filmy residue behind. She does have soaps with essential oils in them (though with my stilupid skin I am even allergic to this). The candles she makes have scents that are very close to the real thing and not just a mix of perfumes. I highly recommend the sweet tea, gardenia and rose candles. The sweet tea is a perfect match and gardenia is the closest to the real thing I have ever smelled. Everything else in the store is from various other mechants and are perfect for gifts... yard flags, jewelry and various knick knacks. These are a little pricey, but fairly standard for other giftshops and memorabillia I have seen in town. read more

She took the time to speak with me like a valued human being and not just some customer to soak money from. Prices vary from average to top dollar. But...the pricier items are well worth it! Local stuff at a local shop but visitors welcome, too! Situated in a fairly new strip mall on Ashley River Road (Hwy 61), this place is our go to for gifts- house warming, birthdays, holidays - you name it, we always find something there and they offer free gift wrapping that always looks great! Options range from Lowcountry culinary treats (think benne wafers, hot sauces, grits, tea) to Charleston-themed tees and hats. They stock fun tea towels and a lot of prints, candle holders, etc. - many with a South Carolina, Charleston, or beach theme. They make their own candles there with a wide variety of scents in nice looking glass containers. They have jewelry that always makes a nice present. And for fun they have silly socks and cocktail napkins with funny sayings. Although they do not really have gifts for children, our daughter loves to visit there, they are always very sweet to her, and she even helped make a candle last time. Try it out! read more

Our first time here. Discovered this little gem off the side of the road in a shopping center. The owner is very pleasant and she even has a shop dog, the name is Ashepoo, which just lays around and all you have to do is walk over him! It is a small shop and they do have some really unusual items for sale. I did find the perfect gift for my mom for mothers day. a dish towel that says " i love Jesus, but I cuss a little!" Yep that's my mom! They hand pick items that range from local, near and far, fun, funky, handmade, company made, mainstream, and one of a kind. They also have a nice bunch of drink coasters that have all kinds of funny sayings on them. A nice assortment of yard flags and handmade soaps and candles. Some of the items are a bit pricey but this is a local business and I do take that into account. They do offer soap and candle making classes just contact them for times. They do sell there candles wholesale if you're into that. We found this place to be a nice find in the west ashley area and we will be back! Remember if you can buy local! read more

I've been in here many times always hoping for a better experience. The owner is very sweet and I love seeing her shop dog...BUT their selection is just lacking so much. I check in frequently and it's the same old stuff that hasn't sold. She gets very very little new products in, if any. I noted some ornaments at Christmas but they were pretty pricey and as of last week (march) still there for the same price. I bought candles from her over 18months ago when we moved to the area. They were marked 50% off and I bought several. The same exact candles in the exact same scents are still in there for 50% off on the same display. The same clothes are on the racks that were there the first time I went in. Many of the products seem like things she personally uses like oils, soaps, candles but not a lot of retail or gifts. I LOVE local art and supporting small businesses, that's why I keep checking in this shop but the art that she does sell is priced very high for the quality AND it never rotates. The quality of many the products just isn't there. Things that you could easily make at home with recycled products or very kitschy, over sold art like a screen printed map of Charleston on a doormat or decoupage coasters. It's just there until it sells, and I don't see her moving much of any product. It's always the same exact stuff. I would love to see new inventory, more art, local products, and better quality products! She needs new venders with nicer stuff! I want this place to succeed. I'm surprised there are not more locally owned little gift shops like this in Charleston and I do love that this store is so close to my house. I'd love to give her more of business but I almost always walk out empty handed. read more

This local shop is one of our favorites! We loved Gina's shop on Edisto, and followed her after her move to the West Ashley location. Pluff Mud Mercantile has offered us the opportunity to purchase gifts that we have sent to family throughout the U.S. Our daughters in Portland loves the 'scrabble' initials and necklaces; our Minnesota daughter loved the new top she purchased while visiting. We always leave with a full bag- our last visit: Charleston's Own benne wafers, a new scarf for me, napkins, cards, two towels (for gifts) and Miss Ezzie's AMAZING smokehouse bacon and tomato dip!
