So nice to have this restaurant in the Quadra Village neighborhood! We like to come for brunch and there's no long lineups.

As I make my way around Victoria trying out all the great Poutines, my recent vist to Pluto's has me full. I really enjoyed their House Poutine. It is a blend of roasted garlic, fries, onion rings, cheddar cheese and gravy. Just over half way through I was getting full. Its rare for a Poutine to do that to me, but this one did. Pluto's is the place I go to most often for breakfast on the weekend. Why? Simple - no waits! Most of the popular breakfast spots in downtown Victoria often have substantial line-ups to get inside, but with Pluto's you can usually walk right in and grab a booth. The food is decent - nothing spectacular, but it tastes good and it's usually brought to the table quickly. The wait staff are usually prompt and on the ball. The ambiance and decor are okay. Decided to try the 50 cent wings. How can you go wrong? Till I met these wings. $15 worth of sadness. Literally more skin than meat. So tiny, they must have been from some kind of pygmy chickens. I've walked past this restaurant a million times, and always thought it looked funky and unique. Clearly an homage to the 60's-70's almost like a spaceship or something. I recently read an article that they're being 'renovicted' by their landlord, who wants to redevelop the property into a condo. As much as Victoria needs housing, it's unfortunate that we seem to be following the same path as Vancouver where local, long-time small businesses are pushed out, and luxury unaffordable condos take over. Funky aesthetics aside, Pluto's food I would classify as average. I had breakfast there, and it was good, but definitely not the best I've ever had. Portions were massive. The eggs tasted a bit plastic, but otherwise everything was good. Not sure I'll be coming back, but I had to give it a try before another Victoria landmark faces the wrecking ball. read more

Out of all the places I visited during my Victoria trip, Pluto's had to be my least favorite. I should point out that it isn't bad, but I must agree it's better in theory than in execution. When you walk up from the parking lot, you see the patio on your left, but there's no clear indication where the main entrance is. Based on their decor, I thought they'd have a cool sign that said "Look Here" or something. I don't know what it was about this place, but I would suggest that they may have been understaffed. Our waiter, while perfectly friendly, was in and out of "the weeds." The food was so-so, although I don't know what I expected from pancakes. This place isn't horrible and the two stars should really reflect "trying really hard but not quite making it." I wouldn't not recommend it, but frankly there are better places. read more

Worst breakfast I've had at a restaurant. Let me paint you a picture... My boyfriend and I went here and I ordered eggs benny with hash browns, a pretty standard order. Apparently not. My hollandaise sauce was ice cold, it was as if they'd taken it straight out of a fridge and put it on my plate. The hash browns weren't really hash browns at all but basically little burnt crisps. It looked like they'd taken the crumbs at the bottom of a chip bag and deep fried them until they were hard and burnt, that's not an exaggeration. The only thing edible was the toast. So the logical thing to do would be to send the food back, right? Except that we didn't see our waitress again after she took our order, someone else dropped off the food and she didn't stop in even once to do a quality check. We finally had to wave down a busboy to come to the table. By this time I'd lost my appetite, my boyfriend had finished his breakfast (his was edible, nothing else to say about it). We got the bill and when we took it up to the front to pay and complain about my breakfast. They said all they could do was give us 10% off my breakfast. Needless to say we told her it was the worst place we'd eaten and that we'd be spreading the word, paid the bill and left. I will never...NEVER eat there again. Occassionly, I'll go off the reservation and try a place that might not be so highly regarded by fellow reviewers. Pluto's was just perfect for that ocassion. To be honest, I have no idea why there have been so many bad reviews! First of all, you can't miss the brightly colored former gas station. Usually, food out of a former gas station would give you worms or some sort of stomach fungus. But, Pluto's offered the exact opposite; delcious food with great service! I had a delicious lamb burger with a great little salad. Also, free wi-fi make this little joint a great place for breakfast or lunch. As of 2011, Pluto's is highly recommended. Quirky diner that's worth checking out, with friendly staff. It's a reclaimed gas station turned into a diner with neat,random space facts at the tables. It has a spacious outdoor seating area, which is nice for those summer evenings, indoor seating as well. They specialize in Canadian comfort food with a Tuesday night feature dedicated to Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!! The portions are big, we had grilled cheeses (of course) with French fries and two alcoholic ciders. All of that came to 32 bucks!! The price is definitely right, especially if you want a drink from the bar. If you're not looking to spend a fortune but want to go out for a bite and a drink - this is a fun spot to stop at. Side note: no special birthday freebies. We went for my boyfriends bday....the staff wished him happy birthday but sadly, no free milkshake :( read more

Okay, I normally love Plutos for breakfast, but we stopped in for a late night dessert and were slightly disappointed. The cool funky decor is even better at night, but the place was totally empty. Not a good start for dessert craving folks like me. Then there's the dessert itself. I wish, no demand, restaurants own up to the nature of their deserts. Frozen just doesn't cut it. I know, I know the profit margin on homemade desserts just isn't there, but if I wanted store bought I would have bought it at the store. I like Pluto's more in theory than execution. They serve a number of creative breakfasts until 2PM, but they're also open for dinner, unlike all of the other breakfasty places in town. I also like the concept of all-you-can-eat Tacos on Monday night and all-you-can-eat Fish and Chips on Thursdays (both for $9.99). I also like the 50s drive-in motif and all of the tables outside. But otherwise, Pluto's fails to live up to the other restaurants of its ilk in Victoria, despite similar, or more expensive prices. I tried an eggs benedict with portabella mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. While those accompaniments were tasty, I found that the hollandaise was a bit too sweet and tasted as if it had been made from a mix. The home fries also had a taste and texture which made me think they were previously frozen. My wife enjoyed her home-made nut burger, but found it to be a bit more dry than she likes. Pluto's will work in a pinch, but it's a poor value compared with the similarly priced Blue Fox and John's Place. read more

It's interesting how this place seems to have a bad rep. I wouldn't say the food is anything really special; but it's certainly not terrible. The building is an old gas station, I believe- which adds a nice air of quirkiness. The menu is typical roadside diner food - burgers, fries, salads, desserts. I love the fact that you can order the burger with any kind of seasoning you want (I had a hard time deciding between the honey mustard, Cajun and Teriyaki) . You can also get your burger served on a wrap, which I did. My companion got the lamb burger. The portions are pretty large, which again is to be expected of a diner. But my chicken 'burger' was delicious. :) This seems like a good place to bring a group of friends on a hot summer day. Saw two of their staff getting high behind the restaurant as we arrived, which was the first red flag. We went in anyways and ordered our food, but it took 40 mins for it to arrive. Pretty sure the kitchen dropped the order but the server told us it was very busy that day hence the wait. The place was half empty so we didn't believe her. The food came shortly after we asked about it and was very disappointing. The pan fried potatoes were deep fried to oblivion and so oily they weren't edible. The bacon was undercooked as well and overly greasy. Both of us had bad indigestion for hours afterward. We expect more for a basic breakfast that costs $13. Gross. Meatballs tasted fishy. Ordered spaghetti and meat balls $14.95 (15 bucks!?! For spaghetti!?! At a diner!?!) Sauce was plain and tasted like tin can and black pepper. Noodles were mushy. And it didnt come with any parmesan. But the worst part was the meatballs. They actually tasted fishy, gross, tasted like fridge. My teenager had a cheeseburger and under cooked fries, he didn't finish either item. Only good thing was the server, she was quick to apologize and had no qualms about taking the spaghetti off the bill. Actually she seemed like she wholly agreed that the meatballs sucked and the dish was sub par. Tips to kitchen manager. Cook your sauce, I mean really stew it down. Undercook the noodles, they will finish cooking when you heat them up in the sauce in a pan on the stove. Don't use microwave. Make your meatballs smaller and maybe use 20% pork to keep them juicy and refrigerate them in sealed portions. Not on the baking sheet in the fridge maybe loosely covered in Saran for days on end. How can anyone return to this restaurant for breakfast? It was the worst. The hashbrowns (as another reviewer pointed out) were just hard rock burnt bits. I asked for eggs over easy and one was and one was hard. So I basically paid 8 dollars for one egg and a piece of toast because they don't include meat with breakfast. My friend had a coffee and it was almost 3 dollars. Avoid this place for breakfast. read more

Many years ago when I first moved to Victoria, I was a regular at Plutos, and it was amazing! The food was fresh, and the taste was consistently delicious... I revisited my favorite spot about 6 months ago, and found that the food was ok at absolute best. Breakfast is decent for the price, but the service and the taste of the food has certainly gone downhill...it is sad, as it used to be such an amazingly good place for a great meal, and good conversation...now all that is good is the conversation! :( read more

I thought it would be a good place to eat but found, after trying it 3 times that the food was so so to bad and the service sucked. It took 45 minutes for my "fish burger" to come and another half an hour to get a second cup of coffee. The place was noisey and the staff in the back I could hear sitting outside, uttering expletives and loud laughter. With the wind blowing from the West you could smell cigarette smoke when they were on break. I would not recommend this place to an enemy. read more

First time there. Nice location, fair parking at site. Staff was pleasant, But do you worry when you hear clearly the fryer has gone down and you haven't received your order yet? Meh.......Big kahuna burger(single pattie, cheddar, bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion, average bun) definitely Not the BIG Kahuna. It was okay but not up to the title. Onion rings were good, fair number of them. $16.00 They do NOT have the best milkshake in the universe as claimed. Had a Chocolate one, served in a mason jar(interesting) heaps of whipped cream and some sort of chocolate(?) drizzle. It has the left over amount in a small side glass ...sort of a minnie me version. $6.00 It wasn't really thick, it was overly sweet. needed a stronger chocolate foundation if you want the title. Stopped in for a burger and a beer. Had the Phillips IPA and it was a tasty combo My wife really enjoyed a crisp salad with her cocktail. Saw that they have daily specials and a happy hour. We were visiting Victoria and our nephew brought us here for lunch. Enjoyed traditional eggs Benedict. Fresh cut home fries...a tad over salted, but cooked to perfection. Hollandaise sauce was delish! My husband had milkshake that was to die for.....thick and chocolaty and halibut and chips that were very tasty. Food is served hot and portions are generous. We went last Saturday, the food was terrible, my steak was first dry/ raw and cold, than they burned it, the french fries were cold you got about 10, the salad came on the same plate and was squishing the other food. The salad dressing was bland no flavor. My friends burger was dry and the sauce tasted like soya sauce. The waitress came back only once. I had to get up to get a plate for my salad. The restaurant was not clean and the food is the worse food I have had out in years. Cold food, raw food, burnt food dry food. Do not eat here, This was a waste of our money and we did not get a good meal. If you want a meal do not eat here i would give a minus five review. This restaurant does not even deserve one star.It was expensive for receiving bad food, There also was some rotten lettuce in my salad. read more
