Cute diner that is 60s reminiscent. It was clean and had plenty of space. I came on a Monday at around noon and it wasn't busy. I like that there were trivia cards on the table for you to entertain yourself while you wait for your food. The staff was very nice and attentive. I got the What the Cluck fried chicken and stuffed fries pancakes. I did see the reviews saying the portions were huge but this could've definitely fed 2. For $23, I think this was a steal. I only was able to finish one layer of waffles, the piece of chicken, and some potatoes in my sitting and had to pack them for later. The pancakes had herbs (green onions I think?) stuffed in between which was interesting and I didn't expect it. My two complaints about the meal are that the outer coating of the fried chicken was overfried, resulting in a darker coat and the chicken to be slightly tougher, and that there was only one small piece of chicken. It definitely is a potato-centric portion, with loads of fries and side potatoes. I think if I was to come back, I wouldn't get this again but it settled my curiosity. While awaiting my car being serviced early one morning at a nearby dealership, the service rep there recommended this diner close by for breakfast. I'm so glad. It was a delightful experience. It would not be my first choice for a diner experience in Victoria, but I was afoot. It was close. The seating and service were prompt and very friendly. The expected refills of the pretty-okay coffee were frequent enough. Things were moderately busy. The breakfast Benny was promptly brought out and was nothing short of really good. Price and portion were fair, and along with enough attentiveness, I was compelled to way-over tip my wonderful waitress Sara. I really DON'T understand the odd negative review. Outliers I believe. While trying to quantify the nuanced tastes I looked around and even the decor was nuanced with fun additions and pithy details. While there was that greasy spoon vibe of a times-past diner, it still felt modern enough, clean, and as I implied, the flavour profiles were fantastic. The hash-browns weren't those usual franchise-prominent, lightly golden brown fried potatoes squares probably previously frozen, but rather hand-made, deeply-fried master pieces of epic short-order cooking -- with an unmistakable diner ethos. I'd normally not get so excited about a diner nor give one a five star rating just because. However I believe I did as Spoons Diner so exceeded my expectations. We chose this place due to proximity and great Yelp reviews but I don't think we'd go back again. The decor was a fun mix of retro movies and comic books. The food was mediocre and the service was just ok. The chef put cheese on one of the burgers after we had a whole conversation with the waitress about removing it. She took back the burger and side salad and it took another 15 minutes before it finally came out correctly. We ordered two huckleberry lemonades and unfortunately my seven-year-old spilled his right after getting it. The waitress gave us towels to clean the table, but did not offer to replace the beverage. The burgers and sandwich were ok but not great. The pancakes were tasty but didn't come with any sides. We were kind of secretly hoping after the whole burger debacle they would give us a discount or maybe a drink for free but they still charged us full price which was $77 plus tax and tip. read more

This is a really fun diner and I'm so happy I discovered this place. It's retro with a superhero theme. They even have an old lunch counter with stools. You just never get to see these anymore. Loved the menu and the food was over the top good. I like the Prusa option on the menu where you can let them surprise you with whatever the chef feels like making. We all got coffee to start while looked at the menu. The cups were all different colors and styles. Made for good conversation that's for sure. We placed our orders in and didn't have to wait too long for them to arrive. The portions were a good size and all the ingredients were fresh and very flavorful. Spoons is such a cool spot to go to! I've seen their ads around the place (mostly on Instagram) but, due to the location being pretty isolated, I hadn't actually come in to eat here. After someone suggested it, I was 100% down to come have a bite - zero regrets here. When you walk in, it's a funky lil' layout where you have two hallways, one leading to the bathroom and one leading to the dining area. Easy to navigate, I was in the dining area where a friend was waiting for us in no time. The bright colours, eclectic artwork (I seriously want to get all of the prints that they have hanging up and put them in my home omg), and quirky decor makes Spoons into a very easy spot to kick back and relax, while having a good meal. My go-to brunch drinks are usually coffee and pineapple juice, so naturally, I ordered these two. While they don't have pineapple juice, I did get offered mango and was immediately into it. I saw that the juice came out of a carton but honestly, I wasn't too bothered; I like what I like and I'm not too picky about it! Plus, the coffee was very nice! Nothing too radical about it but that's what I like! I got the Bandito Burrito because I'm a maniac for Mexican and it was probably one of the best breakfast burritos I've had in a while, to be completely honest. So much of the time, you get loosely wrapped, greasy burritos but this time around, I got a very well-made, well-wrapped, delicious burrito that didn't make me feel awful afterward?!?! Wild, I know. As the cherry on top, our server, Patrick, was such a nice guy and made the experience really, really comfortable. Anyone who knows me will know that I'm quite a strange, outspoken man and often, it takes people a minute to catch up to the tornado that is my personality. It had a really good peanut butter flavour, and the chocolate sauce didn't over power the dish at all which was pleasant. Our server was very attentive and asked us more than once if we needed anything. Food portions were huge! So be prepared to be full! And since we came on a Sunday we had to wait in line, but it moved pretty fast! (We had 4 people in our party) The jungle book hash was good with a nice subtle parsley/basil flavour. The parliament hill hash was good in its own right but compared to the other dishes we got wasn't our personal favourite. The huevos rancheros were really good, nice flavour. I mixed everything together including the sour cream and guacamole it comes with making it saucy! Definitely would recommend putting some hot sauce on it. Well what a delight this was! We went on a Monday morning around 9am so not many people in the diner. We had a really pleasant server who guided us to a booth. Very retro 50s type diner with great decor and vinyl covered seats at a horseshoe shaped counter or booths. There are a lot of homey touches from a variety of mugs like you'd have at home to boxes of trivial pursuit cards to amuse you while you wait. It's not a long wait so not to worry about that. I had the Greasy Spoon breakfast; two eggs any style, bacon, sausage or ham (I had sausage) and a choice of toast, white, multi or sour dough. My wife had the Breakfast burrito. She could only eat half of it and took the other half away for her lunch later. The food was really good, big portions and the coffee kept flowing. Highly recommend this little gem. It's located in a building that has a housing project attached so don't let some of the neighbours put you off. There's plenty of parking on the street or in designated spaces. read more

I have a mobility issue, so my husband stood in line while I sat on some comfy seats around the corner by the bathrooms. He waited about 15 minutes. Ordered two of their famous Bennys and we were not disappointed. The Dani's and Tom's bennys proved plentiful and delicious. Our 1/2 order of French toast was delicious, too. A note about sides: Spoons serves a garlic laced pan-fried potato. Now I normally push away the side dish, but these potatoes were a treat all on their own. I ate every crispy piece. Like the two screaming babies in the diner today, "AHHHH!!!", Dani's Bad-Ass Benny ($16) was not only a bad-ass benny, but it was also a kick-ass, scrumptious benny. Let's start off with the delectable and generously portioned ingredients: you've got chorizo sausage, tomato slices, avocado, cheddar and jack cheese, and hollandaise sauce. In hindsight, I wish I took a side view picture of the benny just so you could see it in its full glory. You actually get an entire chorizo sausage, splayed in half across two English muffins. It is perhaps one of the best chorizo sausages I have ever eaten--exquisitely seasoned with just the right amount of heat and smokiness. Next, you get what seems to be most, if not a whole, ripe avocado. That was surprising to me since I was only expecting a slice or two. (Granted, I only checked my second benny which had half of an avocado since I had already devoured my first benny.) Of course, we can't forget the golden topper of bennys; these poached eggs were sublime. The yolks were a bright orange and were like lava as they oozed out onto the rest of my plate. Along with the creaminess of the hollandaise sauce, this made for an ocean of flavour for my crispy breakfast potatoes to swim in. Whoever Dani is, thank you for setting a new bar for me for what a benny should be. As I mentioned before, there were babies screaming left, right, and centre when we went. It got to be deafening at times to the point where our friendly server asked if our ears were alright at the end of the meal. Our partial loss of hearing may have taken away from our dining experience a bit, but I'm still giving Spoons a five-star rating. It's an eclectically designed diner, with the usual black and white tiles (and a splash of green), colourful movie and comic book posters, as well as bright orange and green walls. Though it's a big space, it's pretty jam-packed, so we did have to make a detour to our table due to the lineup at the front door. Speaking of, Spoons seems to be very efficient because we were seated in less than 15 minutes despite the long lineup at the door. My final thoughts? You need to venture outside the downtown area and drop by Spoons for a fabulous dining experience. And yes, you should order Dani's Bad-Ass Benny. read more

Decided to venture away from downtown once I read the reviews for Spoons. I love to reward unique dining experiences with creative menus by patronizing them even if they are a little farther out. The employees were absolutely wonderful with their attentive and friendly attitude. The peach-mango Mimosas were our first reward. Followed by the Junglebbok Hash ( chicken, scrambled eggs, pesto, cheese and onions), Tom's Benny with grilled cheese instead of English muffin and a customized Benny with Chipotle Hollandaise, carnelized onions, avocado, spinach & banana peppers. I ordered a vegetarian dish (one of the hashes, which did not have meat listed as one of the ingredients) and to my horror, bit into chicken. There was chicken mixed throughout the dish. Their handling of the situation was appreciated, and service was otherwise friendly, but by then I had completely lost my appetite, although my dining companion enjoyed their meal. This year was the big Southward Family Vacation to Victoria, BC. Understandably, trying to get 10 folks in 2 cars to a restaurant in an unfamiliar place is like herding cats with alzheimers. But I found Spoons on Yelp (YAY!) and became the hero of the day. Matt greeted us at the door with a tiny look of shock at our numbers but he recovered quickly and smilingly set us up at a large table. I immediately felt more at home (Austin, TX) cause he had a tattoo on his neck and he was ADORABLE! All my nieces and I were instantly in love, only made worse by his sweet, easy personality. We immediately invited him to come with us on vacation which he politely declined but he did sit for pix with all of us like a good sport. The cafe is retro kitsch and super cute with old movie posters and sock monkey art on the wall. The tables had trivia questions on them in a box that said, "You can dance with me all nite but you can't take me home". Obviously this place had a sense of humor. That became even more clear when we noticed you could substitute your hash browns for a bowl of candy ($2). This was our first official stop in Canada and we were already in love, eh! The menu selections were vast but hubby and I both gravitated to the "hash" which must be Canadian for Potato Mountain. We could and should have split one portion and would have still had enough to feed an orca. I swear that dish almost kilt my hubby, put him in instant food coma in mid bite (see pic). The "pancakes" my nieces ordered were more like skyscrapers covered in anything from fresh local berries to chocolate and bananas and whipped cream. Even tho the portions were almost obscenely huge, it worked out great. The leftovers saved me later after traveling the nauseating winding roads to get to our next adventure, ziplining. Having lived in Victoria for several years, this is one of my favourite places ever. I've sinced moved away and it's still a place I look forward to going to everytime. I recommend getting the "Prusa" and my favourite. It's completely up to the kitchen what to make but you get to decide sweet or savoury, and if you're vegetarian they'll make it vegetarian for you. It's always soooo delicious and creatively put together. I always leave in a good coma so make sure you have time to nap after! You can also flip double or nothing for the dish too. The service is also phenomenal. They often times have a long wait, but the staff works so quickly while simultaneously not ever making you feel rushed, that it blows my mind.
