We had Pluûm replace three identical street facing windows. The Head Carpenter was meticulous in every step of the process. The Assistant Carpenter was also extremely conscientious when it came to dismantling the windows, frames, and wood work. Jorge was replaced by Sergey to do cutting for the final three days of construction and finish work. The final product was worth every minute. All of the joints were airtight. Each miter cut was exact. John is a cabinet maker and it is evident every time I look at my new windows. They were able to maintain the visual harmony of design that you find in some of your nicer 100 plus year old Craftsman houses. They came to us with glowing references from acquaintances and surpassed what were already high expectations. Thank you, James, John, Jorge, and Sergey. I think we can all agree that needing a home repair is never exciting but James made this as painless as possible but beginning to end. I did not look at any Yelp reviews for this business until I decided to post my own review today. I see that the company has quite a few lengthy, detailed one-star reviews from customers who are clearly extremely unhappy with the work these guys have done and in some cases, the companies unwillingness to make it right. On the other end of the scale are numerous 4 and 5 star reviews... many of then very brief and vague. Most posted by Yelpers who have written well under ten reviews during their entire time with Yelp. And quite a few live nowhere near Oregon. Seasoned Yelpers can easily spot a few serious red flags here. In my case, we never got to the "contract signing" stage. I used the "request a quote feature on Yelp that I have always loved. Pluum was one of the outfits that responded. We exchanged a few e-mails and the owner asked if he could come out to do a quote and suggested a date and time to do so. I responded that I'd love a quote but would not be available at the day/time he suggested and proposed an alternate appointment. In the meantime I told him what materials I had in mind and the owner said he would get back to me "with numbers" the following day. Still waiting for those numbers. The next I heard from the owner was that he had just left my place (over an hour after the appointment time that I said I would not be able to accommodate). I drew his attention to my message that clearly stated that I would not be home on that day and he apologized and said he "missed my comment saying that". I realize that mistakes happen which is why I strongly prefer to do things over e-mail and not over the phone, so there is less chance of miscommunication. When you have a paper record of entire conversations it's very difficult to blame the other guy for your own screwups. I was not overly worried about any of that except that it did display a certain degree of lack of attention to detail on the owner's part that could translate into problems if I decided to go ahead with having them do the work. Fortunately, it never came to that. 30 minutes (literally) after I politely responded that I didn't miss our appointment because we in fact, never agreed on an appointment time the owner responded saying that he "just found out that they just landed 3 massive apartment complex deals and that he would have to pass on doing my project". This is kind of like being 5 minutes into a first date with someone and having them tell you that they were just this minute offered a great job on the other side of the Country so they gotta go. Yeah, I suppose something like that could happen but it smells like bs to me. These guys could, in fact, be great builders. Who knows? I certainly never will. But if you invite them to bid on a project and then get a queasy feeling that something just isn't right, it's probably not your imagination. I have been relying on Yelp reviews for a great many years. For when I'm looking for a decent meal or someone to take on a major project. Reading the reviews for this business, coupled with my own experiences with this fellow definitely gave me pause. Caveat emptor. read more

We remodeled our master bathroom and it turned out better than expected. We are very pleased! We needed to replace the shower in our master bathroom and weren't sure where to start with the remodel. We came across Pluum Construction and reached out to them about the project. James got back to us right away and set up a time for a consultation. He came out to view the bathroom and offered helpful suggestions for the remodel. We ended up extending the shower, replacing the floor and moving the electrical outlet as well. In December 2021 a tree fell on our home, damaging our roof, gutters, deck, and causing a leak that damaged our laminate floors. We were ghosted by one contractor and turned away by several others before we finally found Pluum Construction, and I'm so glad we did! As new homeowners, this was our first experience dealing with homeowners' insurance and we were overwhelmed to say the least. James was a phenomenal advocate in helping us understand the process and most importantly, working with our claims representative to ensure all of the repairs we needed were paid for. Altogether Pluum Construction ended up replacing half of our roof, our gutters, repairing and re-staining our deck, and installing new LVP floors throughout our home because our old floors couldn't be matched. All of the work was done beautifully! Now we feel like the tree falling was a blessing in disguise because it's like we got a surprise home renovation paid for by insurance. I really credit that to James putting in the time for repeated calls with our claims representative to explain what needed to be done to make us whole. James was extremely responsive and easy to reach through phone or text throughout the entire project. If I called him and he didn't answer, I would get a text right away letting me know he was on another call and would call me right back. His team was very friendly and we felt comfortable having them in our home. It's really obvious how much pride Pluum Construction takes in their work, and how much they care about their clients. This past week we utilized Pluum to remove an old and dilapidated chain link fence and replace it with cedar. Take a look, the photos speak for themselves. We've been homeowners for years, had lots of contractors out for various roof, landscape, and arborist work, among others, and our experience with Pluum has been the best out of all. I was fortunate enough to have two estimators come out and provide independent advice, guidance, and pricing. They were thorough and extremely patient, asking thoughtful questions as well. The crew for the fence was on time, followed Covid protocols, and even completed the fence on schedule despite having to add some additional work to link to a neighbor's fence. Pluum was able to offer a wide variety of payment options, including Venmo, which was great because that's not always available. The icing on the cake was they were able to take the little bit of leftover cedar they had, and put together a large kindling/wood box (see photo #3), just because they noticed I had a firepit. This company has horrible customer service and then just bails out on projects choosing to be taken to court instead of talking with the client and figuring it out. They used unlicensed sub-contractors to do work, specifically plumbing which the county pointed out, the jobsite is left looking like a bomb went off each day, the framing is pieced together like the lumber came from other project and they were just using left over pieces, the concrete work was uneven and left the floor raised in the basement now we have to grind it down or level out the rest in order to lay floating floor, and I could go on. Mr. Pluum himself is a high pressure salesman that promises the world but really just scams horrible bids and then buys a new boat and has no interest in the project. I would recommend as long as James is in charge of this company to never ever hire them especially for a large project, maybe he can handle smaller jobs but he for sure can't handle a large project and when it starts to show his inexperience everything goes downhill. The CCB should shut him down but that is another story. PLEASE do your research and you will see what I'm saying. Mr. Pluum, if you respond to this with your typical victim mentality like the others responses, just know this is from a real experience and I know you are aware of all the truths in this review even though you come up with excuse after excuse why you are worthy but any contractor that knows anything knows you have to use licensed plumbers and the fact that you didn't 2 or 3 times with different plumbers proves you are a cheap scammer that is just trying to cut corners and profit for yourself. There are many other areas that maybe you could debate and make some lame excuse why your team did half-assed work but the fact you bring in unlicensed plumbers shows your a dirtbag contractor and should be banned!!!!! James, if you respond please explain why you would bring in unlicensed plumbers, not once but twice onto a jobsite? Are you too lazy to check the license of your subs even though you should get a W-4 and have them list you on their insurance before they start? There are so many things you do wrong but please focus on this one cause there is no good reason except you didn't want to pay a plumber rate but wanted to charge for a plumber. read more

Pluum removed a freestanding cast iron gas fireplace from a corner of our family room and we were very happy with their scheduling and work. The project had many pieces as the fireplace sat on a granite pedestal, was vented through the ceiling, and was surrounded by rock walls (code requirements). Everything needed to be removed and then replaced or repaired: roof, ceiling, textured walls, window trim, floor, baseboards. BEWARE! I had major water damage due to an upstairs tub drain pipe break. It affected the bathroom below and adjoining bedroom. My homeowners insurance ended up sending a second contractor, who thought they were coming to do repairs. Due to the incredibly poor job that Pluum did with the initial mitigation, the new contractor had to start mitigation completely over. This pushed out repairs by at least three weeks - due partially to the delay, and partially because since things were not done correctly initially, it meant there was additional mold to be dealt with. A few items of note... 1. Because my home was built in 1965 asbestos testing for floors and walls was required before demo is legally required. This was never done, or even suggested, by Pluum. Maybe they don't know the legal requirements associated with repairs of an older home? 2. A tub drain is considered sewage. (Makes sense, since I wouldn't want to drink it.) As such, anything that water touched should have been removed as part of mitigation. Pluum's "guy" removed one section of ceiling above the tub only, even though moisture was found in the ceiling, walls, and floors, of both the bathroom and adjoining bedroom. Again, this leads me to believe that Pluum doesn't really know how to do this type of work, regardless of the fact that he says, again, and again, and again, how great he is, and how much he knows. 3. The "guy" that Pluum sent to do the initial mitigation appeared to be on something. The flooding happened on a Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend, so possibly it was difficult to get someone out that was sober? His "guy," who didn't show up until 8:30 pm, didn't even bring basic equipment such as a broom, step ladder, or even a single piece of equipment that might stop the leakage. He kept asking me if I had... 4. I did not actually meet Pluum until he picked up his equipment. I had asked him to pick up his dehumidifier, which was pouring water all over my bathroom floor. He first argued with me about whether the dehumidifier was at fault. (It was.) He was rude and insulting about my having contacted him about this on a Friday evening when he was trying to enjoy time at home. When he showed up the next day he was used-car-salesman pushy, wanting me to assure him that he and his company would be the ones to continue to work on the project, and bragging on about what a great guy he was, how much he'd done for me, and how much he knows. 5. Pluum ended up charging for imaginary things. For example, he charged $143.63 each for disposal of 2 bags of garbage. There was in fact only 1/2 of a bag of garbage, and I took it out of the bathroom and disposed of it myself. He charged $50 an hour for 4-hours to set up and tear down of equipment, all of which I did completely. He charged $480 for rental of the dehumidifier that was faulty, and actually ended up adding to the water damage. I try really hard to add as many positive reviews to Yelp as I can, but I felt it was important that others be aware of what they are getting into if they decide to work with Pluum. (I'll be adding a much different review of the new contractor and his amazing, fully equipped, and completely sober, team.) read more

We needed to get our master shower replaced and decided to do our whole bathroom. We called a few contractors out and James was quick to give us a fair bid. We decided to move forward with doing a second bathroom after finishing our master bathroom. James' vision for our master is what sold us. We wanted to expand our 3 x 4 shower and he was able to double the size, which I didn't think was possible. All of the workers that came by were super professional and always wore masks, which I really appreciated. One of the best parts of working with James is we were always able to get ahold of him. Some minor things went wrong, which is par for the course with construction, but James made sure to right them all. He let me take as much creative control as I wanted (very important to me) but made suggestions and offered help with aspects I was not informed about (which were many). Pluum did a concrete front patio for me. I'll give them 5 stars for being prompt with scheduling the job as well as getting it done much sooner than expected. The quality of the work was also very good (4 stars) and the price was right (4 stars) even after the last minute price adjustment to get more gravel. I'll give 2 stars for the only significant negative. Perhaps because they were so quick to fit me in their very busy schedule, they rushed the setup and so the communication about the details of the pour were lacking. As a result, I didn't notice the forms were set out of square on one end of the patio in order to both align with the end of the house foundation while also encapsulating a pre-existing post base on that same end. This out of square approach was a judgement call by Pluums team without consulting me first. I would have preferred a different approach, but will live with the bizarre out of square front right corner of the patio. Based on a total of 20 stars in 5 categories mentioned above, the avg is 4 stars. One other category I didn't score on but I really didn't like, was the 'buildertrend' account I had to sign up for to get a quote and invoices. In general, contractors should not make customers sign up with email acct for some 3rd party software they want nothing to do with. Just text us a PDF quote and subsequently a PDF receipt and we'll be much happier and waste a lot less of our time. Now I'll undoubtedly wind up with yet another stream of spam emails when this 'buildertrend' sw starts sharing my info. For this subcategory, I'll give 0 stars. In summary, work with Pluum for your concrete needs, but do 2 things... Make sure they cover every detail of the job with you before they finalize the form setting... and whatever you do, I recommend you do not sign up for that 3rd party sw in order to get quotes and receipts. Stole $7,000.00 for faulty plans that never passed inspection. Lied the entire time. Still grateful that they never started the work, because my house would have been destroyed. Ask yourself: Did they pull permits? Was everyone certified? That uneasy feeling should be straight up fear. I needed my kitchen done so I gave pluum a call to set up an appointment. I found them here on yelp. Seemed to be decently reviewed so I figured what the hell. After speaking to the owner James, we set up a time for him to come over. Surprisingly he never showed up and texted me an hour after the time he was supposed to meet me that he wouldn't be able to make it. Not too impressed. I am all about second chances though. So we schedule a different day and time. After waiting 45 minutes after the time we set up he finally showed up to look at my kitchen. As we were inside r asking about what needed done, my daughter who is 17 came down stairs and I watched him check my daughter out. Like dude I'm right here and she's a minor. Very disgusted! So after eyeing up my just turned 17 year old daughter, he told me he would call me back tomorrow with a price. I was so glad to get him out of my house. Such a repulsive man. He called me back 10 days later with a price. For a small kitchen he wanted 75 thousand dollars!!!!! That was 40 thousand higher than the first 2 contractors I called. After telling him that I hired another contractor he was very ignorant and told me not to ever waste his time again. I would never recommend this piece of trash to anyone. It's hard to award a rating when a contractor fails to show up twice for bid appointments they suggested the date & time for. In my case, I did receive a call half an hour before the first scheduled time indicating they needed to reschedule. Fine, things happen, so we set a time later the same day. I stuck around waiting & came inside to find another voice mail (made 35-40 minutes after the new time we agreed on) indicating he would be unable to make it. Needless to say, I didn't call back for round 3. The two other contractors I initially contacted were on-time for their appointments. read more

I usually wouldn't come on here to leave a review 3 years after work is complete but I'm so disgruntled with this company... 3 years ago we contracted James and his company to remodel our bathroom. He assured us that it would take about 2 weeks. The whole thing was a 6 week ordeal. They started demoing the existing bathroom but then told us that the new window wouldn't come for weeks. The tiler did half of the job and then disappeared on vacation which delayed the project further. Mind you, this house only has 1.5 bathrooms so we weren't able to use our shower for 4 weeks and then showered in a boarded up construction site for another 2. James was disrespectful in his communications, repeatedly telling me not to worry and calling me - I quote - a "silly goose". He talked about his wife or girlfriend's boob job. All around just unprofessional. After 3 years some of the tiles in the bathroom have cracked. The thing that got me to write this review after 3 years was the icing on the cake.... We're looking to sell the house and come to find out he didn't even manage to properly close the electrical permit or pull a mechanical permit that the city of Portland told me was required for a fan installation. I randomly met James in my neighborhood while he was on a job site. We started talking about his business and the work he was doing in the area. I happened to be getting my floors worked on in my house the same day. He went to get me a business card when I mentioned that there was actually one thing I was looking to get done. I was looking to get an old furnace removed from my living room as soon as possible. When he brought me a business card he came and took a look at it, gave me a quote and said he could get started right away so it could be removed in time for the new floors. I was so excited and grateful about the timing of how everything worked out. He sent his guys over immediately and I feel like the price was fair and reasonable. We had a couple electrical hang ups that were unforeseen on both of our ends. We were able to make adjustments and still get the work done in a reasonable time. James was great to work with throughout the entire process, very responsive and professional. I really appreciate everything he did to make this work out for me. We agreed in the beginning that I would be taking care of the painting on my own and the small hole in the picture is from the electrical issue that we plan on covering on our own as well. It is very daunting trying to find a contractor that you can trust. There are a lot of contractors now, that are super busy and will take advantage of you, by hiking up costs. I contacted 3 contractors about problems with my window trim and siding. One quoted me outrageous figures without even coming to my house. Another quoted me figures, without clear explanations. James, however, squeezed me in his busy schedule and still quoted me a very fair figure, while setting the right expectation that unforeseen things may come up. He sent one of his carpenters, Nathan, to my begin work on my house. During the entire process, they kept me up to date on what was going on and most importantly, showed me what was happening under my trim and siding. They always communicated what was going on and what my options were. They never came across as trying to upsell more costs or doing something "shady." I was very impressed with Nathan. He paid attention to every detail and did not cut any corners. The project went longer than expected, but I was very pleased because the slight delay was because Nathan wanted to ensure that everything was completed as promised and to perfection. There were a couple minor things that came up, like the paint color not matching, but he quickly fixed it, without trying to pass the cost to me or try to convince me otherwise. I know how scary it is to find someone that won't rip you off and that will be transparent the entire time. Buyer beware. Extremely dishonest used car salesman turned "General Contractor" who retracted his word and our agreement, despite a signed scope of work and contract being in place. The small remodel job that I hired him for was never completed in full, and the workmanship was terrible, at best. He cut so many corners and left the job in such poor shape that I had to hire another contractor to come back in to re-do his faulty work. Traveling between San Francisco and Portland for work, my husband and I did not have time to deal with the disaster of managing his subcontractors while we were on travel. It seems I am not the first and I definitely won't be the last to have had such a bad experience with this schmuck. WARNING - Dishonest contractor, shoddy work, womanizer. My wife hired this outfit for help on work at our house to refresh the kitchen. The work that was done was shoddy, with no attention to detail, and caused damage to existing flooring. Contractor attempted to charge us additional funds to complete the job after a price and scope of work was agreed upon in a signed contract prior to the start of work. My wife felt extremely uncomfortable interacting with this contractor from suggestive comments that he made to her in my absence. What is particularly interesting, is that James Pluum lists on this Yelp Site that he is minority owned (which is why my wife originally was interested in supporting this business) but James is actually a white, middle-aged male - and this company is named after him (James Plumlee). I should have looked on Yelp first before hiring this guy as it looks like quite a number of others have had similar experiences to ours. In short, a very dishonest outfit. There was a crack in the bottom of my bathtub and I was so concerned for the damage that it could've caused! I contacted Pluüm Construction and they were out at my house by the next day tearing out the tub and putting in a new one. WARNING!!! DO *NOT* HIRE THIS COMPANY. I am currently working with the Oregon Construction Board and the Oregon Judicial System in attempt to recoup significant monies paid to James for work that was either never completed, or work that was done negligently. James uses criminal tactics to extort additional funds from his clients and walked away with funds I paid in full for a job that he knowingly never completed. In short, I paid James in full for work to be completed at my house before all the work was complete. He *knowlngly* did not complete the agreed upon work in our signed contract, and despite numerous requests, refused to reimburse me for work he clearly knew was not completed (nearly $9000 worth of work). James would use extortionist tactics on multiple occasions to bully me into paying him even more for work that was already agreed to and already paid for in an attempt to squeeze more money out of me for a very basic job. Just to give you a window onto his personality and his typical modus operandus, he invoiced me an additional $600 after the fact (a price and job I never agreed to) to reseat after retiling the bathroom floor. Reseating a toilet requires unbolting two screws, and no more than 30-45 minutes. I hired James and his company, Pluum Construction for some pretty basic, straight forward work - replace carpet with LVP flooring, frame and install a door, install preassembled cabinets into the wall, install tile backsplash on a 8 sqft area, retread existing stairs so that it matched flooring put in. James' subcontractor completely ruined the treads that were installed in the stairway as he did not pre-condition the soft pine treads as any typical contractor would know is needed on softwoods to avoid blotchiness. I informed James and his subcontractor the stain was botched, and not only did James n ever come over to look at the problem, he continued to bully me over text and indicate that he would not correct the problem, unless I paid him another $1000. When I refused, he instructed me never to contact him again, or he would file harassment charges. He never did return to complete the job, and he walked away with full payment. I attempted to resolve the issue via small claims court, but James indicated that he would deny the small claims court case, and request that it be heard in circuit court, telling me that if I wanted to pursue it further, I would need to shell out significant costs in attorney fees, in hopes that I would drop any legal action given legal costs and he would simply walk away with funds I paid him in good faith for the completion of the job that was never completed. His address is an unoccupied Public Storage Facility - this might also tell you something about how this company operates. Further, I felt very uncomfortable as a female working with James. On the first day on the job, this contractor told me how he and his wife both have open relationships and that they each are open to have relations outside of their marriage. He would also comment on my female tenant's bodies to me when they were wearing shorts around the house. Please, be very wary of this contractor. Do not trust him. read more
