I lived right down the street from Po' Melvins eight years ago and periodically went for their weekend breakfast brunch. It was a great value for my dollar spent and I wasn't able to eat anything else for the rest of the day! They had a full service omelette station and the chef made each of them "to order". They also had a full station of waffles, pancakes, meats, cereals, fresh fruit, and other items. From the recent reviews posted I can't wait to visit them again! Breakfast buffet early on a Sat. Morning was great until the crowd arrived. Small area so there was a lot of waiting in line. I like high caloric fried chicken and this fit the bill. Unfortunately the mashed potatos were instant, UNFORGIVABLE. The fried okra was so-so, as was my side of navy beans. I love it here. I can't imagine why you wouldn't. Down home cooking in this sort offered you'd probably drive past. I've never had a server that wasn't anything but friendly, efficient and grateful that you are there. It's not fancy, but they are trying to update it to be less old school.. Popped in for lunch with my husband today. Our waiter, Darrel, greeted us right away and was very attentive throughout our meal even though the restaurant was extremely busy. The fried shrimp appetizer was delicious, hand breaded in light , crispy batter and fried perfectly. I had the vegetable plate, the potatoes and gravy, greens, fried okra, and tossed salad were all tasty. My husband had the chicken fried steak, which was also quite good. I tried the breakfast buffet. I'm disappointed. This place must have good reviews for quantity over quality. The place smelled like old stale cigarette smoke. I didn't really expect it to be nice, but the this knocked off a whole star. The scrambled eggs were good, but the biscuits where like bricks. The hash browns were so dry I pushed them aside. The sausage was also dry. Good luck if you try this. I'd stick to the omelet station, at least you know it is cooked right in front of you. You might want to pack a defibrillator because there were a few patrons that looked like they might need it after downing the 12 pieces of bacon on their plate. I've never been to Po Melvin's before yesterday. I have never met Mel before yesterday. I have also never had such high level of service before yesterday. Mel was so gracious and the staff were attentive and friendly. Every thing that was ordered was absolutely delicious, most especially the fried shrimp and fried pickles, whose breading batter was on point. Po Melvins is your down home type cooking. They're slogan is 'food so good you'll smack your mama". If your a Notre Dame fan you will really feel at home as the decor is all dedicated to them. The wait staff is very cordial. I enjoy the chicken fried steak. Their green beans come closer to my great grandmothers than any other I have ever tried.They bring in a good crowd. So it was my kido's birthday and we were up in Dallas for Legoland. The place we decided to go, after reading many of the reviews here, was Po' Melvin. The foods were good. I ordered the seafood platter for my wife (secretly hoping she wouldn't finsih it so that I can have the rest!), chicken fingers for kido, and the fried chieckn steak for myself. The chicken fried steak was good. However, I do agree with James H, that it was not the best in Texas, but still very good. The seafood platter was huge. For $14.99, it was well worth it. Kido was so tired he slept almost the entire time.... so his chicken fingers and fries were all cold and soft. I ended up doggy bagging it and took it back to Austin. (it became my next day lunch) All in all, service was great, foods were good. I will come again if we visit Dallas again. read more

Great home cook food, one of my favorite lunch spot since I work in Irving, you got a lot of food for your money, the linh portion comes with three sides, fried and grilled pork chops are my favorite as well as the roast beef. GOOD eats. When we went it appeared it was over staffed. We had 3 waters trying to take our order and the others were tripping all over themselves. The ice tea is fresh and the public water supply must be good to. We both ordered the chicken fried steak since they brag on it so much and we are in the chicken fried nation after all. It comes with 3 sides plus bread and that ant bad for 9.99. The meal arrived timely and looked very inviting. The waiter came often with the tea refill but the glass is quite large anyway.
