This is definitely one of the better grocery stores in the area. You will find better quality produce than some of the chain stores a few miles away. You will find a better selection of spices. You'll find an excellent butcher section. The parking lot is a bit on the small side and there is usually a line outside because of current social distancing requirements, but the staff handles everything with professional efficiency. read more

I've lived in Baltimore for over 5 years now and I can't believe I've never come here before. Yes, it's location can be a deterrent, but don't be fooled, this place is great!!! Love all the international goods: Asian, European, Middle Eastern, etc. It's so nice to have. For example, when I was looking for olives, there were Italian olives, spanish olives, middle eastern olives, American olives, so many olives!! Produce is fresh and cheap. It wasn't until some fellow dog owner in the park, when the conversation turned to local supermarkets, told me that I MUST go The Markets at Highlandtown, and that it was recently written up in some upmarket publication as the "best supermarket in the US," that I went. And, M@H lives up to the billing. Even before you get inside, there's some really great urban energy that you just don't get at Safeway or Harris Teeter. When you enter the produce department, and see great looking cilantro for about $0.50 a bunch that you realize how you've been robbed at conventional supermarkets. The spices--selection and pricing--are amazing. As other have noted, there are overwhelming selections of Latin American spices and those from the Middle East. Dream of a dried pepper, and they have it. The specials at the deli counter were so inexpensive that I thought the meat must be expired, but all was very good. The aisles can get crowded, but found everyone both working and shopping there polite and friendly. I find myself just needing something simple for a recipe, say, garlic, and using it as an excuse to go shopping there. I get what I need, then try something new. Shopping at M@H is my new hobby. I like that we found this place for international foods as there's a wide variety that is offered here. I'm able to find fresh vegetables and herbs that I can't find in other stores with international selections such as fresh Thai chiles, tamarind, etc. When we first arrived, there was a decent line outside, but we were willing to wait and figured that was a good indication that this place was pretty good to shop in. I will say, parking is hard because it's small and a little awkward to navigate at first. We were told when we could go in and I will say that being that the produce section is right in front of the entrance, it can be a bit cramped in the beginning. I am happy that staff follows distancing and mask laws, but patrons were taking off masks to speak to each other from some distance and that's a bit frustrating when they're not respecting your space and distancing from you. I think it will take some getting used to of the aisles to be more familiar and just understand the flow of things better, but I enjoy the setup of the store. It was fairly easy to find the more common international ingredients we wanted, but we did have to ask staff for one particular ingredient and they were able to point us to the aisle. I look forward to being able to come to this store for the ingredients we need and enjoy the friendly staff. read more

This place reminds me of the supermarkets my mom took us to, when we were tight on money. What I like about this market is that it has an IGA-type feel. While inventory is not deep, their selection of what you might be looking for is fairly reasonable. Their prices can be par or downright cheap. What I like is that they obviously serve their local market by stocking ethnic items that locals may be looking for. They had an off-duty cop chase after a shoplifting culprit while I was there---They also have pictures of the apprehended red-handed thieves as a deterrent...and if you catch my drift...that might be indicative of some of the clientele that roams here. Parking is not really all that great, hit or miss depending on how busy they are when you get there---but at least its free!! read more

Fantastic selection of spices and ethnic foods, as well as good prices on staple items. Unfortunately, you can be the most upstanding citizen in the community, and value your personal ethics as much as breathing, and the brain-dead security guard will stop you and accusingly ask you for a receipt like you are a common thief. This after watching you pay for your items, and seeing you carry your legally paid for items directly from the cash register to the door Not going back. read more

This is my new favorite grocery store in Baltimore. It's convienient because it's on my side of town. Parking can be limited and tight but there's always space if you want to park across the street in the free parking garage. This place is great for ethnic foods. Latino/ Middle Eastern/ Indian. You'd be surprised at what you can find here. Meat section is not the best but the produce is great. If you like to explore and try new things then you might like this place. There seems to be something for everybody. Oh, and just today the market at Highlandtown was City Paper's Best of Baltimore 2011 for best grocery store. Holler at it, Hon! read more

This store boast a very convenient location though depending on time of day parking can be challenging. This market in my opinion truly represents the local people through it's selection of international products. The produce is good and often times less than 1/2 of what is charged for the same item at Safeway or Harris Teeter! The meat looks fresh and prices are good also. You will pay more for canned and processed foods, but if you are a cook, this is your store. Also, nice selection of imports. read more

I discovered this store while on my way to my physical therapist's office. This store is very nice. I picked up a bottle of safflower oil along with a jar of coconut oil. Both of reasonably priced. Instead of getting my somewhat rare cooking oils from Whole Foods, I'll be buying them from this store whenever possible. read more

You get what you pay for. This store is really bare bones basic. And not in the greatest area of Baltimore. BUT that being said, there are great meat sales and its my go-to place for anything ethnic. Lots of indian spices, asian foods, even a british selection. I would give it 4, but you can't have 4 without some service. I waited 20 minutes at the cashier because they couldn't price a package of cotija cheese i wanted to buy. I left after 20. But, I found my often pricy garam masala for nothing. read more

No glitz nor glamor here - The Market at Highlandtown is a bottom dollar stop for all the basics. The produce is cheap, as is the meat. The selection is somewhat limited for many items (especially compared to chain supermarkets) though there are a lot of Latino/Hispanic products. We typically shop here when we're looking to make a quick shopping trip and want to stay close to home. You won't find any yuppies or socialites here! read more

Another convenient supermarket in east Baltimore. The produce was good and cheap (just the way I like it!) and I was really surprised by the 2/$5 deal they had on a bunch of Post, Kellogg's, and General Mills cereals. There is also a serious Arabic/Middle Eastern section on the far left side, so if you need to get your Halva fix, there are about 10 types from which to choose. read more

Beware of predatory towing. Aug. 3, 2019 My family and I parked at Highlandtown Market and walked across the street to grab our breakfast from G and A, since our food wasn't ready, my husband decided go back across the street to start marketing when he noticed our car was missing. A gentleman in a car told my husband that they were watching you all leave. Literally we were grabbing our breakfast, was not even in the restaurant for 15 minutes and our car was on it's way to the Greenwood Lot. Even after not having our car we still ended up getting a few items on our shopping list at the store because we planned on doing so before this all happened. After getting my car out the lot for $350 in cash, I contacted the store asking to speak to the store owner which he wasnt there and explained what happened. I basically was told that you are only a customer when you're in the store, if you we see you leave our lot your car will be towed. She then proceeded to tell me that the tow company has pictures of you walking away. I expressed to her that their policy does not give time for people come back to patronize your store if you immediately tow somebody. Monday Aug. 5th, I came to the store to speak with the owner and he was not there, so I spoke with another General Manager and expressed concern about their towing practices and she expressed to me that sometimes their job was to point out people who they see walking off their lot. I explained to her different scenarios to her, such as if I were to come park my car so I can pick up my family who is in the store but I leave the lot and walk across the street, she interrupted me and said again that if we see you walk away they can tow you and there is nothing we can do for you because we have a contract with the tow company. I expressed that's not right and it hurts your customers the most being prayed on and set up. She expressed I can talk with the owner but feels he will not do nothing to help. read more

Highlandtown market is not a chain grocery store. It is very unique. The owner is usually there pitching in doing whatever is needed and the team spirit among the staff is quite extraordinary. It is clear that staff are happy with their jobs and are happy to help customers in any way the can. Most of the food is way less expensive than Safefway. The variety and quality of the ethnic food cannot be beat and many languages are spoken in the market at Highlandtown. I'm so glad I found this market. read more

Small stores often give the impression that they will be expensive, these guys prove you wrong at every turn, Meat is all Black Angus at the same price as Wal-Mart's, low quality offerings, We eat less meat these days so I wat it to be the best I can get. You will find it here. It is also a great place for anyone who cooks, many international spices, ingredients and much more selection that you will find in most stores. Only giviing it 4 stars as it could use a paint job on the walls but overall a good friendly shopping experinece. read more

wow I was shocked when i first walked into the Market! It was definately not what I expected. Great international foods (mid-eastern & Hispanic) Even found Quality Street chocolate (English) Produce was good and extensive (even found cactus leaves) & the staff that worked there was extremely friendly. I would have to agree with the other reviewers that the meets (both the deli meets and uncooked meets, although i did get really good off brand bacon there) were iffy, but hey there is always Sunday's farmer's market (under rt 83) for great meets Prices were also really cheap! I have been to this market several times. They advertised Perdue Boneless Chicken Breast value pack for $1.99 a pound. Several times I have gone to buy the chicken breast and they did not have the Perdue but so off brand with no company on the package. They advertised on Wednesday and I went early Thursday morning. Now this advertisement ran for the whole week. What are they doing? False advertisement. Very upset . BM read more

The store and parking lot are smaller compared to other stores, but the store's selections and prices make up for it. They have a large international food section. Produce and meats are cheaply priced! You can't always go by the prices in their sales paper because they tend to have items priced even cheaper, so it's best to look around so you don't miss deals. If you ask an employee for help finding something they're usually quick to drop what they're doing to assist you, which is nice. If all of their registers aren't open and they start to get long lines they open up additional registers to get customers out quick, unlike Safeway with their 2 registers all day. This market also has a coffee stand inside which has great coffee provided from High Grounds which is up Eastern Avenue. Also their drinks are cheaper than Starbucks, and taste better in my opinion! This store does get crowded and busy a lot, but they usually keep everything stocked up. read more
