I tried this restaurant for the first time today, I ordered a shrimp Poboy sandwich, I also ordered a Gumbo, it took a few minutes extra, more time than they expected, and I will say this, the young woman working in the front at the cash register offer me a free soda that I accepted. I told her I would pay for it, and she would not allow it. when my go food was ready, she told me that my sandwich was also free as a result of the wait, I told her that was not necessary, and she would not accept another payment. This is amazing Customer Service, I didn't feel right taking it. So it just so happens that I was telling a friend about my incident, the bad food, and catty energy I received from Mr. Richard at the Taste of New Orleans festival, and she said (hol' up, let me add the disclaimer that this is NOT MY encounter, but I'm retelling a story I was told because you seem like the type to try and finagle a libel or defamation suit just because you're mad because somebody doesn't like your food) she just so happens to know Chef Boots, who used to cook for you when you had 4 C Square in Downtown San Diego back in the 90's. They said you had the Juke Joint too, allegedly. Now your Poboy shop done closed down too, so now you're stuck moonlighting as "The Gumbo Pot" at festivals that probably cost you more in booth rental than you actually made. Why is it you've have ALL of these different restaurants (allegedly) that NEVER stayed open though? Denny's ain't NEVER had to close down and reopen under different names. Anyways though, Richard T. I heard you and Chef Boots used to get into about recipes (allegedly) and y'all almost came to blows about it (allegedly). AGAIN, just hearsay, but I'm just retelling a story I was told, verbatim. Anyways, if you scroll down to the "10 reviews for Poboy Shop that are not currently recommended" section and look at the reviews, Sally T. is the daughter (the one Chef Boots' sister Eboni used to babysit in the 90's) and Nina T. is really the wife. For her to lie and say this food was "Michelin Bib Gourmand (sic) quality" is diabolical! I think maybe she was trying to say "gourmet" but regardless, she's delusional. NOTHING about that food is gourmet or Michelin. Maybe Michelin tires come to mind as you want to run the food over with your car, but this place ain't even a Michelin napkin, let alone a star. Furthermore, to have your family write reviews because you can't get enough honest reviews about your food is sad. You're one of those people who LOVE to say you HAVE a BUSINESS but ain't really DOING business. People are LITERALLY telling you where you need to improve, and instead of implementing the changes, no, you'd rather argue with people and lie about what actually happened. I was cool, polite, and respectful, and I didn't even make a scene like I could have. I ate ONE of those THREE yucky sides (jambalaya) and brought the rest of that swill back to you, and your wife gave me a $10 refund of the $20 I spent. I could've EASILY got loud and went off about how bad the food was, and disrupted your business, and drove away your customers, but I didn't. I made SURE I was respectful. As a matter-of-fact, I was so cool and quiet about it, YOU didn't even realize what happened until AFTER I had already left. To me, it just looks like you've been janky and slangin' subpar food for 30-years, and you STILL apparently don't get it. What's even sadder is to be able to get this type of feedback about you from somebody who remembers you from 30+ years ago, ESPECIALLY considering the Taste of New Orleans festival was the FIRST (and LAST by the way) time I had EVER seen you or had your gross food in my LIFE! Stopped by Po Boy Shop and ordered the fried shrimp plate with mac & cheese and red beans & rice. Overall, it was a really good meal. The fried shrimp had great flavor and seasoning on the breading. I personally would've liked them fried just a little harder for a bit more crisp, but they were still very tasty and fresh. The mac & cheese was creamy, rich, and definitely one of the highlights of the plate. The red beans & rice had a good hearty flavor, though it was a little on the salty side for my taste. For dessert, I had the peach cobbler. The flavor was really good and comforting, but I would've liked a little more juice in it. It would also be great if they offered an option to heat the cobbler, which would take it to another level. Interior is cute , screams New Orleans. They had one person working counter she was busy in the phone trouble shooting some software so I just ordered on the tablet. Overall, generous portions and good Southern comfort food. Located in the Euclid Plaza of Lincoln Park, Po'boy Shop is an eatery from The Gumbo Pot brand that opened about six months ago after its predecessor encountered numerous legal difficulties which delayed the transition between the two businesses. The inside of the suite was spruced up to reflect a Cajun decor. There was sufficient seating in the dining area to hold a couple of dozen customers. Po'boys and fried fare made up one of the menu boards posted behind the service counter. The other board displayed plates and bowls consisting of Southern staples like creole, gumbo, and red beans & rice. Most of the bowl portions were available in small, medium, and large sizes. I selected a few of the yummy items for my to-go order... jambalaya, seafood gumbo, and shrimp etouffee. The gumbo came as one size while I opted for small servings of the jambalaya and etouffee. For $8 and $9 respectively, the jambalaya and etouffee were served in very shallow vessels. The amount didn't seem to match the prices. I also found the flavors to not be as deep and hearty as I had anticipated. More spices were needed to supplement the roux. The gumbo had about three pieces each of shrimp, crab legs, and whitefish. The portion size was better, however it was also the priciest at $22. My expectations were high after making a long drive to the Po'boy Shop. What I sampled was between three and four stars as it was slightly above average for the quality and quantity of food. read more

Breading was lightly seasoned (would have liked a little more flavor) on the catfish and shrimp. The shrimp were super plump and sweet. Catfish was a bit funky but both were best with the hot sauce. While in South San Diego, I searched for a good spot to eat on Yelp and came across Poboy Shop in Southeast San Diego. They specialize in traditional New Orleans cuisine, serving up classics like jambalaya, gumbo, and Creole dishes. I decided to start with their cooked greens, which were absolutely delicious and also vegetarian friendly. After devouring those, I moved on to a shrimp poboy sandwich. It was packed with shrimp, cooked to perfection, and paired beautifully with my favorite Crystal hot sauce (though they also had Tabasco). Every bite transported me back to my times in New Orleans. To finish off my meal, I treated myself to the rum cake, an excellent choice and the perfect complement to my lunch. I had a brief chat with the owner, who has roots in both Los Angeles and San Diego. He learned to cook from family members, and that passion really shines through in the quality and presentation of the food. The ordering process is simple: you place your order at a touchscreen up front, and within about 10 minutes, your meal is ready. Quick, efficient, and absolutely worth it. The space is decorated with touches that make you feel like you're in the heart of New Orleans with the sound of jazz playing in the background. One thing to note there are no restrooms on-site. Went to this place from a google search. The food was good BUT, my poboy didn't look anything like the picture. The photo showed a huge po boy with a large amount of shrimp but the one they served me had 3 on one half and 4 on the other half. Wow. About a good a bang for your buck as you're gonna get in SD. The fried shrimp and fish was incredible - great corn starch style batter very crunchy and flavorful. The red beans and rice were some of the best I've had. The Mac and cheese was so gooey and cheesy not dry at all, also some of the best I've had. The greens, something I normally don't like but my girl is all about, were surprisingly zesty and flavorful. The gumbo was the only 'meh' item I had as I thought it could be slightly richer in flavor. The price can't be beat. I got all those items for $40 - more than enough quality food for two people. We were stuffed and satisfied Don't listen to the couple negative reviews I read from Emmet and Donne below - they are ridiculous and exaggerating with their descriptions. I wanted to do a few reviews of this place, I will start with the gumbo. I saw the reviews and wanted to try it as I love gumbo and love traveling to new orelans to eat good soul food. The gumbo was a little expensive at (22) dollars which is mamas gumbo. I will say the gumbo was just okay. The flavor didn't have the taste and was more vegetables in the soup than meat. This started off my review of the gumbo. I would say giving this gumbo 2 stars just based on taste and meat in the gumbo. The red beans and rice by far was the best selection from this place. The taste was good and seasoned very well. The shrimp and oysters combo plate was okay just regular fried seafood not with a particular taste to the seasoning. My rating of food would be red beans and rice, shrimp and no gumbo if I revisited for food. The shop was clean and service was okay as the guy wanted to charge me for sauces after spending almost 200 dollars at this place. The owner made it right and gave me sauce. In addition, we ordered the shrimp po boy and it was good. The shrimp po boy was good and shrimp filled the stomach. If you are in San Diego try this location for a good meal. read more

Finally made it to this shop, enjoy Cancun food so we went for lunch. It was absolutely fantastic, my Shrimp Poboy and the wife's Gumbo could have easily been served on Bourbon street. The Poboy was in a large really hefty thick French roll and there was no chance of this falling and they give you 3 different packs of hot sauce. The wife's Gumbo was cup size but could have been called a bowl with huge flavors. The interior had a large wall mural obviously portraying New Orleans. If you love Cancun food this is the place for it in East County. The server was excellent checked on us several times and cleared our table. Also a great value, not expensive at all. My mother and I went into this restaurant around 12p-1230p for lunch today to show support of a black owned business and celebrate Juneteenth; we were NOT disappointed! The server and chef who attended to us today were the absolute sweetest people. They were able to help us with all our questions and concerns; great service! AND the food was phenomenal! My mom and I ordered 4 dishes between the 2 of us and also ordered a bunch of dessert for the end. We were absolutely stuffed and took home leftovers with our desserts. There is a really vibrant wall mural depicting Bourbon Street and Mom and I now want to go to Louisiana! The music was fun and had really neat wall decor! Grandma's Gumbo was amazing. So tasty, full of chicken, shrimp, sausage, and the roux was just right! I saw no difference in the regular bowl of gumbo and Grandma's once they got to the table. Not sure it was different or not. My brother had the regular bowl and also raved on it. It's self ordering with a kiosk but very kind folks to help if needed. Two of us ate for $44. Cook, and (my guess) owner, came out to ask 'how is everything?' He was very kind with a litte humor. Very nice atmosphere, appropriate music at just the right level and easy to talk over. Today was my first time trying poboy shop and I ordered the fried shrimp poboy, Grandmas gumbo and a side of macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese was a waste of my money and their time. Im talking about str8 garbage , it smells weird and is very wet/watery also taste disgusting like old hot milk or heavy whipping cream with no flavor! I threw that whole bowl away. The poboy only came with 6pcs of shrimps but the shrimps are a decent size and fried to perfection and the sauce is a must try!( I recommend getting two sauces if you get the fries w/ the sandwich). Lastly the gumbo was good but it definitely needs some work, the rue is nice and thick with a lil kick to it but not to spicy it's packed with fish, shrimp, sausage, chicken, and okra. I added crab for 7$ and they gave me the three smallest legs with no meat in them! and a piece of the shoulder which was the only thing that had crab meat in it (don't recommend adding crab legs period) the flavor profile is very weak but it is good just not great. *The poboy was definitely the best thing I got from here.* read more

We dined there on Fat Tuesday. We had the Yaya Gumbo that had plenty of chicken and sausage, okra and seasoned just right for our don't like spicy taste buds. The honey cornbread muffin was a perfect accompaniment. We also had the fried shrimp and and catfish. They were both tender, succulent and lightly breaded in cornmeal. The remoulade sauce was just the right amount of tangy, we ordered a second sauce. For dessert we had Aunt Nicky's Rum cake. It was so moist and the sugar nut crumble topping was perfect. You place your order on a tablet type screen, it is a cashless system so only debit and credit cards are accepted. There is an attendant to answer questions, and bring your food to your table. The food is served on paper plates and bowls. Sturdy plastic cutlery is provided. There is a large colorful wall mural of Bourbon street on one side and New Orleans decor on the other. New Orleans jazz is playing to set the vibe. We will return to try the Po Boy selections that looked scrumptious. read more

I drove all the way from Poway to check this place out and it did not disappoint! SO DELICIOUS & AUTHENTIC! This is a family-owned restaurant with great customer service. We were a group of 11 which they kindly accommodated. The atmosphere is super cute with handmade artwork from New Orleans and a beautiful big mural on one of the walls. I had the chicken etoufee, honey cornbread muffin, and the beans/okra/tomato mix and it was all so yummy I recommend all of those for sure! Hope to be back soon!
