Usually a reservation is recommended, as it's pretty busy most days (as is well deserved), but today I walked in with a party of 4 asking if we could be accommodated because a different restaurant completely wrecked our plans. Shaniqua not only went out of her way to accommodate us, but even got us a table in the main dining room, and got us setup with drinks so fast. Our experience at Louisiana Purchase was alright, but we likely would not return. We had a reservation and were seated immediately, but they did not ask if we wanted an indoor or outdoor table, so we were directed to an outdoor table, which was alright for that day, since the temperature had cooled down, but would've been too warm otherwise. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The table was also pretty uncomfortable as it was hard bench seating, so there's no backing to lean against either.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server was friendly though and ran through the menu for us and came to check back in on a regular cadence. I'll start by saying the portion sizes for the dishes were decently large, so if you want to try multiple things, come with a group or be prepared to take things home. We ordered the beignets ($13), which is denoted on the menu that it comes with 5 pieces, but it was very clear that they cut one piece in half (so we ended up with 2 triangle pieces and 3 square pieces) to make "five pieces", most likely because they ran out. They only offered us a discount when we complained about the size discrepancy, otherwise they would've just charged us full price for an obviously not-full-size order. This ended our meal on a very sour note and I wish their management/staff had addressed it differently. Either tell us they didn't have enough to make a full order and offer us the option to get it discounted upfront, or ask if we still wanted the order. The beignets weren't that good either, so the entire ordeal was off-putting. The cheddar biscuits were pretty good and the honey butter it came with was excellent. The rest of the dishes were all overly salty. The uptown gumbo was alright, but didn't come with enough rice, especially given how salty it was. The alligator cheesecake was very rich and heavy, but not sure how much "meat" was actually in it, tasted mostly of cream/butter. The mac and cheese was probably the star of the show (came with the oxtail plate), but still also very savory, and the oxtail that came with it was way too salty - completely ruined the oxtail and nobody wanted to eat more than 1 piece. The hot honey fried shrimp was nothing special, just fries and fried shrimp. Drinks (cocktails and mocktails) were fine, but nothing special. The bill also came with a 5% charge which was not mentioned on the menu at all. Been wanting to try this place for a while, and since I was in San Diego earlier this week, I made reservations to meet a friend. Unfortunately, it was a little disappointing. They were out of several items we wanted to order, including the beignets, yams, and the Creole Shrimp Pasta. They were also out of the only dessert on the menu, which was a letdown. Our waitress tried to upsell me to the Drago's dish instead, but I ended up ordering the Catfish Étouffée. The cheddar biscuits were also disappointing. They were pretty hard, like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, which was especially frustrating because I love a good cheddar biscuit. I also tried my friend's oxtails. The menu described them as braised, but they were served smoked and without the rich gravy I associate with a braised preparation. Those are two very different cooking methods and create completely different expectations. If you're serving smoked oxtails, I'd recommend making that clear on the menu. The biggest surprise was that my leftovers tasted noticeably better the next day than they did fresh, and that should never be the case. Decided to check this place out because I saw it a few weeks back while eating at Colimas. We came mid week and at first it was just the two of us, but 15 min later, people started coming none stop. Was impressed with the server. She had great energy, sweet, and very personable. She was handling everything from seating, taking our order, serving the food, even at the bar making specialty drinks. And even when it started to get busy, that didn't stop her from being attentive to everyone.. I even had her surprise me with a drink concoction, and she did not disappoint. Let me paint a picture...when my fiancé and I started dating, we went to New Orleans and I ate as much alligator as possible. I love alligator. Big surprise to us...Louisiana Purchase was the starting point for Taste of North Park and was super crowded when we arrived, but the manager, T, made sure we had reservation when they opened to the public and we were seated in the back away from the crowds. Thank you! For starters, they are dog friendly! YAY! They brought out water for our pup. Our server (I wish I remembered her name- Aliyah?) was incredibly sweet and made plenty of suggestions. I've been to San Diego a few times, and Louisiana Purchase is one of the places I always see recommended on TikTok, but I never had the chance to go before. This trip, my friend & I were able to make a same-day reservation for an early dinner before a concert. I was so excited to finally try it. When we arrived, it took a few minutes for them to work out where we'd sit, but the service was very friendly & welcoming. Our server was clearly very busy (it was early Saturday evening), so it took a while for her to get to us at first, but once she did she was friendly, attentive, & answered our questions about the menu. They were out of the Ecto Cooler drink, which surprised me because out reservation was relatively early at 5:30 p.m. It must be really good, lol. So unfortunately I didn't get to try it, but we started with the garlic cheddar biscuits. They were served with butter & some sort of jam. The order comes with 4, but they brought only 2 first because a new batch was still baking, then gave us the other 2 later. But by the time we got the last 2, we were getting full, so we didn't touch them. The biscuits had a nice texture & a sweetness to them that actually worked really well with the garlic & cheese. The butter was a bit firm & hard to spread, but the first batch of biscuits was more lukewarm than hot. My friend pointed out that it probably would've been easier to spread the butter onto the hot biscuits we got later on, but we just didn't have room for all that. Regardless, they were tasty & I loved how crumbly they were. For my entree, I ordered the hot honey fried shrimp skillet, and it was delicious. I got the hot honey sauce on the side & I'm so glad I did because it would've been too much for me if it'd been poured on. The plating was enticing. My shrimp were fresh (HOT), crispy, and well-seasoned. The breading was so good. The gouda mac & cheese was also really flavorful & honestly my favorite part of the meal. The sweet potato cornbread was good, too. I expected it to be sweeter, but it was everythinggg once I drizzled some hot honey over it. I believe sweet potato should be added to damn near everything, so I think it complemented everything else so well. Now I will say there was a bit of pooling in parts of the skillet, which can happen with cheesy dishes, so I just avoided those spots. I know my stomach's weaknesses & it can't handle that. I had one bite with too much oil & it immediately made me feel a little off, but that's more of a personal preference/issue since I don't usually eat very heavy food. My friend ordered the catfish & said it was well-seasoned. I believe it had the same breading as my shrimp. She thought the greens were good, but wished the menu specified what type of meat was used, since she doesn't eat pork & we weren't sure if it contained pork or turkey. We think it was turkey. We both tried the yams & agreed that they were a little sweet for us- the syrup was very heavy. But everyone likes their yams different; we all have different tastes. But we loved the music. You can't go wrong with throwbacks. There's indoor seating according to the pictures, but we were given a table on their enclosed patio. We went on a warm day, but I noticed they had heaters set up for colder weather, so I'm sure people are kept comfortable year-round. I'm so glad we made it here. While in San Diego for the Chris Brown concert, I stopped by Louisiana Purchase and decided to try a few things from their Bayou Hour menu. The gumbo was decent--not bad, but I prefer my food piping hot, and it came out just warm. Now the Louisiana catfish? (Didn't get a picture) 10/10! Fried to perfection with the perfect amount of kick, and that homemade tartar sauce was the cherry on top. It was so good, I was already thinking about coming back for more! San Diego, first of all... y'all have been hiding this gem! Louisiana Purchase absolutely did what needed to be done. Every single thing we ordered was seasoned, flavorful, and made with love. The collard greens were hands-down some of the best I've had in a restaurant, the red beans and rice were rich and comforting, and that mac and cheese? Baby, it was creamy, cheesy perfection. The oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with flavor. And when I tell you that fried lobster tail sitting on top of my pasta took me out? Whew. Every bite had me looking around the table making sure everybody else was tasting what I was tasting. And please don't sleep on the mocktails! Booked a dinner reservation that required a $100 deposit ($50 per person), which was supposed to go toward the final bill. It was a bit unusual, but I didn't mind since the restaurant looked promising. Upon arrival, the wait to be seated was moderate. The restaurant has semi-outdoor seating (three walls with a curtain separating it from the sidewalk). It was a little cold, though they did have heaters. The ceiling seemed makeshift with plastic slats, but overall the space was well-decorated and had cute, cozy vibes. When we ordered, we were informed that they were out of the oxtail skillet and gator bites, which was disappointing given the short menu--especially since my partner is mildly allergic to shellfish. We ended up ordering the Dooky Chase and the Shrimp Skillet. The food was delicious overall, though the mac and cheese could have been more seasoned. The fry on both the chicken and shrimp was beautiful and perfectly crunchy, and the cornbread was sweet and nicely caramelized on the outside. I do wish they offered more sauce options (currently just ranch, ketchup, and hot sauce). We ordered the banana foster for dessert & it was easily my favorite part of the meal. Sweet bananas, creamy ice cream, and fluffy cake soaked in syrup. Service was okay. We were there for about two hours, likely because they were busy and seemed understaffed. The wait for entrees was reasonable, but dessert took quite a while, and it was especially difficult to get our server's attention when we were ready to pay. We were asked multiple times whether we had paid a deposit, and eventually a server rushed over and refunded it through the app, however OpenTable refunds take up to 10 days to process, and we were still expected to pay the full bill before leaving. This made the process confusing and inconvenient, especially since I'm currently still waiting on the $100 refund. First time trying Louisiana purchase and it was pretty cool. I would like to say don't come here if you are on a diet lol the food is good with many carbs!! Soul food so worth a cheat day at times :) for my food I ordered the smoked Gouda Skillet and it was pretty good but a bit sweet because of cornbread and honey. However, it was much flavor. For my drink, I ordered the French margarita and it was very good a tad sweet, but can taste the alcohol in it. They have the cutest drink names and presentation with it. Or. The service was good !! Our waiter was very patient and gave good food options to decide on. The hostess was a bit slow with seating us but all was well. The ambiance was cute, good vibes and very good music. I love how it represented black culture and eccentric art they had. It's only street parking and can get busy.
