Our experience at Louisiana Purchase was alright, but we likely would not return. We had a reservation and were seated immediately, but they did not ask if we wanted an indoor or outdoor table, so we were directed to an outdoor table, which was alright for that day, since the temperature had cooled down, but would've been too warm otherwise. The table was also pretty uncomfortable as it was hard bench seating, so there's no backing to lean against either. Our server was friendly though and ran through the menu for us and came to check back in on a regular cadence. I'll start by saying the portion sizes for the dishes were decently large, so if you want to try multiple things, come with a group or be prepared to take things home. We ordered the beignets ($13), which is denoted on the menu that it comes with 5 pieces, but it was very clear that they cut one piece in half (so we ended up with 2 triangle pieces and 3 square pieces) to make "five pieces", most likely because they ran out. They only offered us a discount when we complained about the size discrepancy, otherwise they would've just charged us full price for an obviously not-full-size order. This ended our meal on a very sour note and I wish their management/staff had addressed it differently. Either tell us they didn't have enough to make a full order and offer us the option to get it discounted upfront, or ask if we still wanted the order. The beignets weren't that good either, so the entire ordeal was off-putting. The cheddar biscuits were pretty good and the honey butter it came with was excellent. The rest of the dishes were all overly salty. The uptown gumbo was alright, but didn't come with enough rice, especially given how salty it was. The alligator cheesecake was very rich and heavy, but not sure how much "meat" was actually in it, tasted mostly of cream/butter. The mac and cheese was probably the star of the show (came with the oxtail plate), but still also very savory, and the oxtail that came with it was way too salty - completely ruined the oxtail and nobody wanted to eat more than 1 piece. The hot honey fried shrimp was nothing special, just fries and fried shrimp. Drinks (cocktails and mocktails) were fine, but nothing special. The bill also came with a 5% charge which was not mentioned on the menu at all. All in all, not the best experience for a restaurant charging these prices, and we did not enjoy several dishes due to excessive salt.
We came in on a Monday initially for HH but they actually don't have. The website has the current menu, I was going on yelp menu which was 5 months old. I added some update photos of their current menu. There was only 1 waitress, but she was attentive to all the parties. There was Inside and outside seating and the establishment looked clean. Though initial visit was for HH I decided to stay since my son had been craving alligator. We ordered... Alligator bites with fries $26 (I thought that was high, but I never got gator before and don't know how to compare it) Bowl of Gumbo (chicken and sausage) $16 I thought it was flavorful, I would have like the roux to be a bit more thicker. Beignets $13 These were perfect Cheddar biscuits $10 There was 5 large biscuits. Flavorful but I would have like them to be a bit more softer Gouda Mac (side) $10 My kids enjoyed. (I can't eat, so I can't confirm) I also had a Paloma and I thought it was good. I rate a 3.8/5. There are a couple things on the menu that I would like to try, like the lemon pepper catfish, so I may visit again
Came here with my friend to grab a bite, we planned our day here because we wanted to grab happy hour together. However, we were a bit confused because there were no happy hour menus handed out, but we think the waitress made a comment about some items being discounted? But we also aren't sure what was discounted or if we even got the discount. Despite this, the server was really sweet and made some recommendations. What we got: - ACME Oysters (7 chargrilled gulf oysters made with garlic lemon butter and parmesan): the flavor was great, but the oysters were a bit small. - Catfish Etouffee (blackened crawfish etouffee with creole rice): so good! Flavor and everything was perfect. - Cheddar Biscuits (4 house biscuits with honey butter and house jam): this was really good as well. The biscuits were fluffy, had that cheddar flavor and the honey butter and house jam added that sweetness which balanced the saltiness well. The restaurant itself was really cute, we got lucky because we went on a weekday and managed to score parking right out front. I do recommend bringing a light jacket or something because I did get a little cold.
Decided to check this place out because I saw it a few weeks back while eating at Colimas. We came mid week and at first it was just the two of us, but 15 min later, people started coming none stop. Was impressed with the server. She had great energy, sweet, and very personable. She was handling everything from seating, taking our order, serving the food, even at the bar making specialty drinks. And even when it started to get busy, that didn't stop her from being attentive to everyone.. I even had her surprise me with a drink concoction, and she did not disappoint. Tequila peach drink garnished with an orange slice. 11/10 on service. She was amazing! The food was tasty and filling. I had a cup of the gumbo. It was packed with a lot of goodness from the chicken, sausage, and veggies. A pretty hearty cup. Though good, I think I prefer my gumbo a bit thicker, so giving it a 6/10, but more on my personal preference. I also had the catfish which was the perfect crispiness 9/10, while my bf had the shrimp and fries 8/10. Don't forget to ask for their ketchup and hot sauce. Both entrees were delicious, and a good portion of serving.
The place is really cute. Its an outdoor-style place. The food was ok. I really wanted to love the oxtails but they were just ok. Our waitress was covered in hair (I kept telling myself it was from a sweater and not a pet lol) and her nails were really dirty. Maybe if we ordered something different. It was just ok. Not good, not bad, just ok.

SERVICE Seating with the host took a long time (~20 minutes, was told the kitchen is backed up) - make a reservation ahead of time. Staff was quicker once we were at the table with drinks, food, and orders placed and delivered table-side. NOLA food has a very special place in my heart and Louisiana Purchase is serving up all sorts of Bayou favorites! We dropped by for a casual dinner and got their Garlic Cheddar Biscuits, Oxtail Skillet, and Dookey Chase. If you know me, you knowww that I love biscuits! Theirs might just be some of the best in the game. There was garlic, there was cheddar, and it all came with some honey butter and jam on the side. Sooo fluffy and done right. Even my partner, the most anti-biscuit person I know, loved them! Their Oxtail Skillet came with their famed mac and cheese and a slice of cornbread. The meat was falling off the bone, the mac had a nice crust to it, and the cornbread was just perfect! The Dookey Chase was the only slight miss for me. It comes with fried chicken wings and your choice of side- we went with spiced rice. The wings weren't the most seasoned. Fried perfectly, but just lacking a little something something.
After other plans fell through, I walked in at primetime and was welcomed to sit at the bar. Because I liked it so much on my first visit, I ordered the oxtail skillet. Again, it did not disappoint. Super tender oxtail over divine smoked Gouda mac & cheese. (Not Gruyère as I said earlier). More than I can comfortably eat for a reasonable price. The music is chill and kept me tapping my toes, super friendly vibe. I'm so glad I came.
I'm so glad I finally tried this place. Everything was satisfactory besides the drinks. Not a huge fan of weezy vice + passionfruit lemonade definitely tastes like fresh lemon squeezed. It was overly sour and sweet, not a hint of passionfruit to be found Garlic cheddar biscuits taste exactly like the name. Garlic flavor was strong! Eating these fresh is like no other experience in the world. Fluffy, buttery, melt in your mouth. Gotta be my favorite out of everything. Oxtail was so tender and smokey. Gouda mac and cheese was the highlight!!! Cornbread a little too sweet for our liking. 5 + 5 came with shrimp and catfish, both breaded to crispy perfection. Tartar sauce that comes with this is the best wow... Even the fries are delightful. I couldn't get enough munching on them. Service is very welcoming and friendly! Establishment kind of small and cramped but they've got a great playlist (MJ, Sade) which makes up for it. Located on University Ave so street parking is tough. Kind of pricey but for the food, I'd say you get what you pay for and it's worth to try at least once. I definitely want to come back to try the gator bites
The food was extremely flavorful and the service was excellent. We are visiting for the weekend and have never been to the area. Louisiana Purchase exceeded our expectations. I'm only deducting one star because the dining area and bathrooms needed a "refresh" from wear and tear. Otherwise we loved it and would definitely return.
When it comes to SD, soul food doesn't jump out in my head. Well, that might be changing after having oxtails at the Louisiana Purchase! I actually think they're underselling them. They're huge, juicy, and incredibly tender. The flavor profile reminded me of a grandmother's pot roast. Everything was very good, including the service and variety of the menu. I would happily come back and eat with them again!
2nd visit, and still yummy. A great spot for Cajun food-- This time with a group of four, and we sat in the second room. There was a nicely designed garden wall (good looking faux plants with real staghorn ferns) which gave it a New Orleans courtyard effect. Down home casual vibe. The place was full at 4 p.m., so I was glad we made a res. Ambience: 4. We ordered blackened catfish etoufee, blackened catfish and grits, fried lemon pepper catfish and chips, collard greens (they were out, so asked if a sub of Brussels sprouts was OK), beer and a Paloma-- all very good. Food: Very good. Service: Excellent See
We had reservations for 4:45. Arrived around 4:30. They told us it was too early and to come back.. it was not busy but okay sure. Staff was not attentive at all.. the food was pretty overpriced for the portions in my opinion. The gumbo was INCREDIBLY salty.. it looked more upscale on Yelp but I didn't get that vibe.. they also served the mac and cheese in a plastic to go container and for the prices, I expected more?

Louisiana Purchase has been on our radar for awhile, and tonight we came here for dinner. It's a delightful neighborhood restaurant in North Park with an upbeat vibe and delicious Cajun/Creole food. FOOD (4/5) For dinner, we had ... Catfish Etoufée with Blackened Catfish (4/5) -- Perfectly prepared blackened catfish smothered in a tasty crawfish sauce served over rice. ($37) Uptown Gumbo (4/5) -- Very tasty dark roux gumbo made with chicken, shrimp, crab, Andouille sausage slices, okara, and crawfish, served over rice. ($24) SERVICE (4/5) We were greeted warmly. Service was attentive and friendly. BEVERAGES (4/5) There's a full bar, but the beer and wine selections are limited. I focused on their "Winter Vibes" -- seasonal specialty cocktail -- and chose the Praline Old Fashioned (4/5), which features praline, creole and orange bitters. I ordered it "up" and enjoyed the flavors. ($15) AMBIANCE (4/5) This is an open air bar restaurant with about 15 tables. Exterior windiw-walks can be closed for inclement weather, reducing seating by a third or so. The setting is casual and comfortable. I really enjoyed the artwork hung on some of the walls, much of which is by local artists. Street parking only. read more

Great dinner full of so much flavor! Nice portions and depth of flavor left us full and happy. Nice indoor/outdoor seating area. Vibes were cool for sure and beware of the alligator in the toilet! read more

OK... first and foremost, a moment for the biscuits. They were so flaky and delicious. We were recommended by the waiter to get things family style and we went all out: - Biscuits - 2 dookey chase - catfish (lemon) - lobster pasta - oxtail rice - Mac n cheese - wings - cornbread All super flavorful. Although it was fried the food wasn't very greasy, it was a very dry, well executed fry. We all talked about our favorites.. the cat fish and the dookey chase were probably the top votes. The service was good and accommodating. A little slower but we had a big group and a lot of food. There was live music and the artists killed it!! Fun spot for a group of girls night!! read more
My goodness. If you haven't gone to Louisiana Purchase, you haven't lived. Let me paint a picture...when my fiancé and I started dating, we went to New Orleans and I ate as much alligator as possible. I love alligator. So, when we found ourselves in San Diego attending cross country meet for my son, my fiancé planned brunch at Louisiana Purchase. Big surprise to us...Louisiana Purchase was the starting point for Taste of North Park and was super crowded when we arrived, but the manager, T, made sure we had reservation when they opened to the public and we were seated in the back away from the crowds. Thank you! For starters, they are dog friendly! YAY! They brought out water for our pup. Our server (I wish I remembered her name- Aliyah?) was incredibly sweet and made plenty of suggestions. We started our meal with gator bites, then moved on to oxtail skillet, and ended our meal with an order of beignets. There was some confusion with the beignets, but ALL restaurants make mistakes...and what really impressed me was how they resolved it. We had such a wonderful time here. Went here as a big group last night without reservations and I was pleasantly surprised as to how quickly they were able to seat us, The service was lovely; our server Ashley was attentive and kind. They make everything to order so somethings might take longer to bring out. Everything that was brought out was hot and definitely made fresh. Oxtail Mac and Cheese- 4.5/5 I loved this dish! It was packed with flavor and most importantly MEAT! The cornbread that was added on top was the perfect balance. The entire table raved about their meals from flavor to portion size to price. Always a vibe! This place has all the vibes, good food, and music that you need. Rather you come for happy hour, dinner, or late night nibbles. Happy hour is from 3pm-5pm and there are some good options on the menu. I ordered the gumbo, half the chase (wings), and rockerfell oysters. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. It was just me, I set at the bar and all the bar staff were friendly and great to interact with. There was Naomi, Victor, and Tee. They were very helpful, knowledgeable on their drinks and fun. I've been to San Diego a few times, and Louisiana Purchase is one of the places I always see recommended on TikTok, but I never had the chance to go before. This trip, my friend & I were able to make a same-day reservation for an early dinner before a concert. I was so excited to finally try it. When we arrived, it took a few minutes for them to work out where we'd sit, but the service was very friendly & welcoming. Our server was clearly very busy (it was early Saturday evening), so it took a while for her to get to us at first, but once she did she was friendly, attentive, & answered our questions about the menu. They were out of the Ecto Cooler drink, which surprised me because out reservation was relatively early at 5:30 p.m. It must be really good, lol. So unfortunately I didn't get to try it, but we started with the garlic cheddar biscuits. They were served with butter & some sort of jam. The order comes with 4, but they brought only 2 first because a new batch was still baking, then gave us the other 2 later. But by the time we got the last 2, we were getting full, so we didn't touch them. The biscuits had a nice texture & a sweetness to them that actually worked really well with the garlic & cheese. The butter was a bit firm & hard to spread, but the first batch of biscuits was more lukewarm than hot. My friend pointed out that it probably would've been easier to spread the butter onto the hot biscuits we got later on, but we just didn't have room for all that. Regardless, they were tasty & I loved how crumbly they were. For my entree, I ordered the hot honey fried shrimp skillet, and it was delicious. I got the hot honey sauce on the side & I'm so glad I did because it would've been too much for me if it'd been poured on. The plating was enticing. My shrimp were fresh (HOT), crispy, and well-seasoned. The breading was so good. The gouda mac & cheese was also really flavorful & honestly my favorite part of the meal. The sweet potato cornbread was good, too. I expected it to be sweeter, but it was everythinggg once I drizzled some hot honey over it. I believe sweet potato should be added to damn near everything, so I think it complemented everything else so well. Now I will say there was a bit of pooling in parts of the skillet, which can happen with cheesy dishes, so I just avoided those spots. I know my stomach's weaknesses & it can't handle that. I had one bite with too much oil & it immediately made me feel a little off, but that's more of a personal preference/issue since I don't usually eat very heavy food. My friend ordered the catfish & said it was well-seasoned. I believe it had the same breading as my shrimp. She thought the greens were good, but wished the menu specified what type of meat was used, since she doesn't eat pork & we weren't sure if it contained pork or turkey. We think it was turkey. We both tried the yams & agreed that they were a little sweet for us- the syrup was very heavy. But everyone likes their yams different; we all have different tastes. But we loved the music. You can't go wrong with throwbacks. There's indoor seating according to the pictures, but we were given a table on their enclosed patio. We went on a warm day, but I noticed they had heaters set up for colder weather, so I'm sure people are kept comfortable year-round. I'm so glad we made it here. I love supporting Black-owned businesses & considering I haven't been to NOLA in a few years, it was time for me to get my fix. This spot was definitely worth trying. read more

My husband and o found out about this restaurant from my sister. She said it was a 10/10 and I must say she was spot on! The server was very sweet and attentive. There was another young lady name Chardonnay who was very sweet and helpful. The food was so good. Our food was cooked fresh and made with love. The fish was crispy and the greens were the star of the show! My husband's oxtails were so tender and well seasoned. This is by far the best soul food we've had in a long time. We will most definitely be making a trip back to San Diego just for you guys! read more

While in San Diego for the Chris Brown concert, I stopped by Louisiana Purchase and decided to try a few things from their Bayou Hour menu. The gumbo was decent--not bad, but I prefer my food piping hot, and it came out just warm. Now the Louisiana catfish? (Didn't get a picture) 10/10! Fried to perfection with the perfect amount of kick, and that homemade tartar sauce was the cherry on top. It was so good, I was already thinking about coming back for more! The vibe of the place was on point--great energy, covered outdoor patio, and smooth R&B playing in the background. Service was solid overall--everything came out fast. I did have a bit of a wait on a final round of drinks, but to my surprise, they comped them! Definitely a nice touch. All in all, a great experience with even better catfish. Dined here last night for our anniversary. We've been here plenty of times and the food is always amazing. We had the watermelon lemonade, coke, fish & chips, fish and shrimp combo, Mac & cheese sides and the biscuits. Service is usually great but I took away one star because last night we had some hiccups. We ordered drinks, I got mine but my husband never got his. We ordered the biscuits only got 3 and had to wait for the remaining one to come out. We ordered our food- my husband asked for fish & chips with a separate side of Mac & cheese. I think there was some confusion because when his food came he didn't get fries only the Mac & cheese. Here's my gripe. Our server Yanny never came back to check on us after our food was brought out. We had to flag down another server to get my husbands Coke , fries and the one lingering biscuit. In the amount of time that all of this transpired I have finished my food and husband ate most of what he had but it was pretty incomplete experience. We didn't see Yanny again until it was time to pay the bill with no apology for the mess up, delay, or the disappearing act. Usually great. Tonight not so much. We were greeted with a smile and sat immediately. The server was dynamic and great. We ordered the aligátor cheesecake (it is phenomenal) it takes about 25 minutes to make. We told the server we were in no rush and to bring us our mains after the appetizer was done. Well.... Before the aligátor even showed up all the food showed up. We explained we wanted that after the appetizer and the delivery person seemed quite annoyed at us and said "well no one told us that." We sent the food back as we really wanted to relax and have the aligátor and then our dinners. We had told the server as she came by and told us the appetizer was almost done after this incident so she knew it was the way we wanted. Then - we had literally just started the appetizer and all the main courses came out. None of it fit on the table and now we had our dinners before we had a chance to enjoy the aligátor cheesecake. Not what we wanted but we went with it. All of our food sat there cooling off as we ate the appetizer and it was just off putting. Simple request they messed up twice. All of the food was outstanding except my chicken wings. They were tasty but five of the wings were so mico as to be one bite (see photo). For $2.60 a wing this is rediculous. This is a good place to go but last night it just was not as nice an experience as we had hoped for and asked for. I will not order the chicken wings again. Too small not matter how good. read more

The wait was a little longer than I prefer, but the food was worth the wait! The oxtails were tender, the flavor was intense, but not overpowering. I loved the greens and the mac n cheese was delicious! My husband had the lemon pepper catfish. It was highly recommended on yelp, but we just found it to be ok. It was good, just didn't meet the expectations of the hype. The cornbread was very good. It was moist and flavorful. I gave a 4 rating because the next day when I reheated the Mac n cheese, the amount of oil that separated the cheese was SCARY! I thought about all the arteries that are being clogged in our community! The price was also not for those who may be watching their $$. I definitely recommend giving this place a try. San Diego, first of all... y'all have been hiding this gem! Louisiana Purchase absolutely did what needed to be done. Every single thing we ordered was seasoned, flavorful, and made with love. The collard greens were hands-down some of the best I've had in a restaurant, the red beans and rice were rich and comforting, and that mac and cheese? Baby, it was creamy, cheesy perfection. The oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with flavor. And when I tell you that fried lobster tail sitting on top of my pasta took me out? Whew. Every bite had me looking around the table making sure everybody else was tasting what I was tasting. And please don't sleep on the mocktails! They were creative, refreshing, and honestly some of the best non-alcoholic drinks I've had in a long time. The picture is with the chef, and let me just say--he did his thing! My mom is pictured with him because we were celebrating her birthday, and he helped make it a memorable experience. You can tell there's real passion behind the food coming out of that kitchen. Yes! We serve a select brunch menu alongside our regular menu available from open to close on the weekends! Our brunch menu is available exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM to 3PM.
Do they allow substitutions? For example instead of Mac and cheese on the oxtail skillet could we get white rice?
While there we asked for substitutions and we were told sides were not a problem it was the items that were seasoned already they could not change.

No parking lot. You have to find parking on the street. Some days you get lucky and other days it's a headache.

It is technically owned by Grind and Prosper Hospitality. However the chef Quinnton Austin is a co-owner of this location.

I think you would be ok but would have a wait.... I say make a reservation and if you can but speak to staff before you do and explain your situation in the event you might arrive later than expected, if that might be a concern.
