    Restaurant and kitchen interior

Immigrant food of all kinds is some of the tastiest, most satisfying food anywhere. Immigrants often walk the thin line between adjusting to their new environment while longing to the flavors from back home. Caribbean taste hits on many such points. The food seems to be taken directly from the Caribbean shores from which they came. With strong nods to African foods, the menu includes oxtail, curry goat and of course jerk chicken. My dish, oxtail with plantains, veggies (cabbage, corn, peas and green beans), rice 'n' beans was flavorful, with each component perfectly made. My request for "very soft" oxtail, was answered with "it's very soft" (and indeed it was fall of the bone, soft), and all ingredients came together to create a plate which would feel right at home on a sandy beach shack. I'll have to come back to try the jerk chicken and curry goat! The interior is in dire need of a make-up. Mismatched chairs and older tables hint at a clientele that doesn't sit and eat here often. The kitchen walls and the Covid era barriers all need a touch of paint, and would someone please fix the crooked gate leading to the kitchen? I would've loved to see the same dedication and pride and attention to detail that are obvious in the food, in the interior of the restaurant. Those details aside, if you want a REAL taste of the Caribbean, come here!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of trying some amazing Caribbean/Jamaican food, and everything from the oxtail, goat, rice, plantains, curry chicken, and jerk chicken was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the ladies there felt so authentic and reminded me of my great grandparents, aunts, and uncles coming together to make a home-cooked meal full of love. The only downside is that I live so far away, or I'd be there all the time. Truly a 10/10 experience and I will definitely be coming back!

If you're looking for a locals only joint, this is the spot to go to. This spot has a simple menu that is perfect for anyone who wants Caribbean food. I am a huge fan of the oxtail here. It was cooked to perfection and was fall off the bone. Their rice here was very good. To my surprise, it was packed with a ton of flavor. This spot feels like a family ranch restaurant with great service. It was just one person working who probably was the owner. She was nice to us and packed our plates.

So I've driven past this spot several times and told myself I must pop in and I finally did. It's very unassuming, but the food is anything but. I got my food to go and was served very fast. I got the goat/oxtail combination plate and I was blown away when I opened my plate. The amount of food was impressive. The goat was tender and the sauce had the right amount of heat. The oxtails were tender as well and the sauce was thick and flavorful. The plantains were fried to the right consistency and were sweet. If looking for Caribbean food this is definitely a spot to try.

This place is a must, and the definition of an authentic hole in the wall. Simple menu with some BOMB ass food. I was craving oxtail and found this place, and was not disappointed at all. My plate was delicious, hot and made quickly. Pricing is also not bad considering its location. I will be coming back even with the shitty as San Diego roads I have to drive to get here.

Best oxtail in San Diego by far. It's the closest to my mom's recipe I can find. Oxtail is recommended and ask for hot sauce.

Love the oxtail plate and chicken patty. We get the same thing every time with extra sauce and we're satisfied every time

The food was really delicious. I ordered the veggie plate and a veggie patty. The portions are generous and everything is flavorful. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. The ambiance is casual. I would definitely recommend this place and I will also be back myself.

I ordered the curry chicken. The portions are big but I wish they added more veggies. The food had a lot of flavor and chicken was really tender.

Being an East Coast transplant in San Diego, I grew up on Jamaican beef patties, and they're not easy to find out here. Both the spicy beef and chicken patties were legit--definitely hit the spot when I was craving a taste of back home. Don't come expecting ambiance or overly polite service--it's got that classic bodega vibe, which I respect. Just grab the patties--you won't be disappointed.

Jerk chicken thigh meat was unfortunately dry. Now very spicy considering it's jerk seasoning.

My partner asked for a breaded mahi mahi burrito which they were able to accommodate and it was moist and flavorful. The portion was pretty big too. I came with the mission to try a lot of the tacos so I ended up getting the fish, oyster, octopus, smoked tuna w/cheese, shrimp diabla, and the stingray. The bigger standouts were the octopus and the smoked tuna. I really loved the smoky flavor on the tuna which was my favorite. The stingray came shredded in some type of sauce that was different and pretty good. The oysters were fried but they were a bit soft/soggy on the taco. And the fish was good but nothing standout. Overall the variety of seafood you can get here is worth coming to check out. My only critique was the taco price vs amount of food. I ordered 6 tacos just for myself and I felt that I could have eaten a couple more.

Then washed it all down with a michelada. I've been here a handful of times and I don't recall ever having a bad experience. Servers and bartenders are always nice and attentive. Restaurant is fairly clean. Also, it's way more spacious compared to the original location down the street. It's a great place to have dinner with friends or even by yourself to grab a beer and watch the game. I highly recommend giving this place a try next time your in Bonita.

I picked up shrimp ceviche, ceviche verde and 2 fish burritos. And all of them were sooo good. Been craving ceviche since moving back to San Diego and this definitely hit the spot. They both had a perfect amount of shrimp, veggies and lime sauce in every bit with the tostada that it comes with. Shrimp Ceviche was delicious. Buy It was our first time trying Ceviche verde and it definitely hit too. 9/10 The burrito was a good size and the portions were perfect, we would have been good with just one, very filling and delicious. The husband said it was really good with some fish in every bite. 9/10 my daughter says it needs a little crema but I think the cheese made up for it. It was a well made burrito. But the salsa is what makes any shop good and their salsas are all fire! Three different kinds and they were all flavorful and spicy, I love my salsa spicy tho. 10/10 my favorite is the chipotle one but for the fish burrito I prefer the creamy cilantro salsa and the red salsa. The place was clean and organized. With plenty of seating for small and large parties. The servers up front were helpful and got my order. They even gave me consome while I waited. That was delicious. It was like a shrimp soup with tender chunks of veggies. Definitely will be back to dine in with the family.

Chief's is one of those type of restaurants, but what I didn't know about Chief's is that it is a sister restaurant to JJ's Island Grindz and Chief's Da Tiki Bar. The food that was served came from JJ's Island Grindz and Chief's Da Crab Shack, and both served delish grub. Besides the tasty food, I really enjoyed the Hawaiian vibe inside, the tunes emanating from the House DJ made me want to dance, and I appreciated the hustle from the hard working staff. If you're looking for a restaurant for a party or a graduation celebration, check out Chief's Da Crab Shack. Chief's Da Crab Shack is located in South San Diego, specifically Bonita, and it can be reached utilizing the 805 freeway and driving east. The restaurant can be found within an outdoor strip mall that contains the following businesses: Chief's sister businesses, JJ's Island Grindz and Chief's Da Tiki Bar; Franco's Flapjack; Well's Fargo; Colima's Mexican Food; and Fresheria. There is plenty of parking in this shopping center. As you enter Chief's, you immediately notice the Hawaiian decor and fisherman imagery with dryed grass skirt material hanging over their seating booths, netting holding crustaceans and seashells, thick ropes, fish as light fixtures, and ocean birds. This is a spacious restaurant with indoor booth seating, tables and chairs, distressed wooden tables for group seating, and outdoor seating. There were televisions around the restaurant showing World Cup soccer. I appreciated the diligence of Chief's staff who hustled while handling my nephew's graduation party and regular customers visiting. Before making my first visit to Chief's Da Crab Shack, I thought we'd be grubbing on seafood that are boiled and placed in a plastic bag with your choice of seasoning. That is what Chief's primary business is, but since it's affiliated with JJ's Island Grindz, my nephew's graduation party had a buffet line that featured Hawaiian and Asian food, which came from both Chief's and JJ's. The following dishes from Chief's were waiting for our tummies: mini pork lumpia shanghai, buffalo lemon pepper wings, garlic noodles, and white rice. The following dishes from JJ's were calling our name: spam musubi, salt and pepper chicken wings, teriyaki chicken, kalbi beef ribs, and red rice. The spam musubi is spam wrapped with seasoned sushi rice and nori seaweed. The spam musubi was a tasty bite in a small package. The mini pork lumpias were packed with ingredients and flavorful. The salt and pepper chicken and the buffalo lemon pepper wings were crispy and wok fried with green onion, fresh minced garlic, crush red pepper, and lemon. I devoured those chicken wings, which ate well with the two types of rice. The garlic noodles were yummy and had an abundant amount of garlic flavor. The red rice complemented all of the protein I ate. The kalbi beef ribs were okay and I wished they were more tender. My nephew and in-laws made appetizing choices for the graduation party and I happily consumed two plates of the food. 4.5 stars because the kalbi beef ribs weren't as good as the other food items. When we were told that our nephew was celebrating his gradution at Chief's Da Crab Shack, I was looking forward to experiencing seafood seasoned in a plastic bag. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Chief's is affiliated with JJ's Island Grindz and was able to grub on delicious Hawaiian and Asian entrees from JJ's and Chief's. Next time, I'd like to visit both Chief's and JJ's and try entrees that they're known for.
