The main building was constructed to serve as a schoolhouse in 1883, as more families relocated the Summit County to work on the Union Pacific Railroad. There are a few interpretive signs outside the museum so I was still able to get a little history fix even though the museum proper was closed.

I wanted to pick up a $2 little pamphlet which shared information about the historic homes along Main Street but no cash is accepted and I didn't feel like putting $2 on my debit card so I didn't get the pamphlet. Oh well, we're still walking down Main Street. Museum was closed.

Who do we thank for these tunnels that aren't just life-saving, but are also fuel-saving,…read moretime-saving, and sanity-saving? They are most commonly called the Eisenhower Tunnels (after U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower who was influential in the expansion of the Interstate Highway System), but more credit should go to Colorado politician Edwin C. Johnson and the thousands that labored in the 1970s to bore, pave, and light the pair of tunnels. When the tunnels opened for I-70 traffic in 1973 (Westbound) and 1979 (Eastbound), they were the highest elevation vehicular tunnels in the world maxing out at 11,548 feet above sea level. Traffic can back up terribly on the highway when there's an accident or a vehicle too tall approaches the tunnels, but we had no problems when we drove through heading westward from Denver towards Breckinridge. People that hate these tunnels need some perspective on how impossible and challenging travel was across the Continental Divide in winter months before their existence. Nowadays, we simply drive under the Continental Divide with two well-lit lanes of traffic going west in one tunnel and east in the other. Kudos to those that envisioned, championed, built, retro-fitted, and maintain the tunnels to help save our fuel, time, and sanity.

We had the BEST experience with Joel our tour guide for the day…read more From the time Joel picked us up at our hotel to the conclusion of our 12 hour trip he made it the most memorable day. He took our family pictures throughout the day to help save the memories. He drove us to our 3 hour train ride, captured pictures of us on the train, and then took us to the hot springs. The train ride is beautiful and relaxing. He then drive us to Vail for the evening to enjoy dinner and shopping before taking us back to our hotel. He made a special gift for everyone in our group and was delightful to visit with. You can tell how much he loves what he does and wants to make sure that you have a special trip.

After the train ride he gave us a tour of Georgetown and also took us up to the highest point of the highest mountain. The views are amazing and the end of the trip he gifted us with pennies to wish on and I guarantee you we'll be reporting back when our wishes comes true. I'd 100/10 recommend this experience. I'd recommend also booking in the afternoon we were able to ride and see during the day and also all through sunset into the evening which was very very pretty.

The tour company was very well organized, and the guides were able to get everyone suited up with proper gear and loaded on to busses efficiently. We received a safety talk on land before entering the rafts and got instructions on how to sit, how to paddle, and what commands to watch out for. Our guide, Charlotte, was enthusiastic, confident, and informative. I really appreciated her clear and straightforward instructions, both on land and on the raft. She also had plenty of dad jokes to last the entire trip ;) Overall, I would recommend this tour for first time rafters of all ages! If I find myself back in the area in the future, I may try out one of the more advanced tours!

We did the half day tour which lasted about three hours or so. River was low for the season, but was still really fun. We were able to jump off a rack into the river, which was refreshing. We also were able to see some local wildlife including some bighorn sheep!
