I added the hot stones as an upgrade, which I'm glad I did. She hit all the right pressure points. After my massage, I walked over the Covewood to grab lunch. I got the miso glazed salmon on top of udon noodles and tomato dashi and edamame with a glass of apple juice. I enjoyed the weather, the view of the water and live music. Afterwards, I walked back to the spa and went into the dry sauna for 10 minutes to unwind before my facial. Sydney did my facial, and I fell asleep. Sadly, there's been a rapid decline in the business. The spa now looks dingy and neglected, and there's a foul odor throughout. The quality of facial and massage services dropped so much due to the constant turnover that I had to stop coming altogether. I had been seeing Chelsea Bowman and the master facialist Ami Sheneman for years. Both left, and no one contacted me to let me know I wouldn't be seeing them for my next appointment. I only found out when I showed up and discovered I'd be seeing someone else. The new girl Kendall, bless her heart--she tried her best, but it just wasn't the same. On top of it when I asked the girls at the desk where Chelsea and Ami went, each time they looked scared and uncomfortable answering. For anyone wondering where Ami went: I found her! She's now at Pier to Point down the street at the other end of Voltaire. I've already been there and signed up for multiple memberships. I highly recommend you do the same. I go to get facials so that someone else can take care of me and use their expertise. Anyway, she first did extractions. I counted and she did four... only four. I thought is was strange for a spa that states that they specialize in acne, and I had said that I wanted help with oily skin. Then she put the enzyme mask on and left for about 20 minutes. After that, she returned and did an arm and shoulder massage. It was very relaxing However, I really didn't want to come for a massage, I came for a facial. All in all, I felt that the hour -long service did not include a lot of skin treatment. I went in to purchase a…read more10-pack of insulin syringes -- something Walgreens clearly states on their own website is allowed in California without a prescription, as long as you're purchasing 30 or fewer. I was simply picking them up for a family member. When I got to the staff at the pharmacy register, I greeted them and then stated if I can purchase a bag of insulin syringes for my family member. I was looked up and down by the employee, who then walked over to the pharmacist. He came back and told me they couldn't sell the syringes to me unless I had that family member's prescription. I wasn't there to debate policies -- I was doing a favor for a diabetic family member and felt completely judged and dismissed in the process. Feeling embarrassed and confused, I checked Walgreens' website outside, and sure enough -- it says in plain English that in California, syringes can be sold over the counter without a prescription, up to 30 units. I went back in and spoke to a manager, showed them the policy, and all they could do was point to the small print that says it's "ultimately up to the pharmacist's discretion." Here's the bigger issue: this location is surrounded by a large homeless population, and I understand the concern about selling syringes to individuals struggling with addiction. But even denying clean needles to addicts does more harm than good. A policy like this, when enforced without context or compassion, isn't protective -- it's dangerous. This pharmacist has either deprived a diabetic of life-saving medical supplies, or pushed a desperate addict closer to sharing a potentially disease-infected syringe just to survive another day. Either way, it's a failure in basic public health ethics. Denial doesn't stop drug use -- it just makes it riskier and more inhumane. If Walgreens wants to empower its pharmacists to make case-by-case decisions, fine -- but don't advertise clear and accessible over-the-counter availability if the actual in-store experience is entirely different. This experience was humiliating, harmful, and disappointing.
