Move over, Chipotle! There's a new fast-casual concept in town, it's called Pokeworks, and in Yelp terminology, "Yay! I'm a fan"! After an audition last night, I had a craving for something yummy that wasn't going to be SUPER filling, but still hits the "sort of healthy" requirement I generally adhere to for weeknight dinners. Enter Pokeworks, a bright and cheery restaurant that specializes in made to order poke bowls, just the way you want 'em. Like most of these "order as you go" type spots, you line yourself up and take your pick at creating your own bowl. Choose from four base options: sushi rice, brown rice, spring mixed greens, or kale noodles, which resemble spaghetti, or you can mix and match like I did, with a combo of rice and greens. Gotta keep it kinda healthful, right? Next, you get to choose a protein (or proteins, depending on the size of your bowl). Large bowls get three choices, regular bowls get two. I'm so in love with salmon that I chose that for all three, but they have lots of options, including tuna, spicy salmon, and even grilled chicken, tofu, and shrimp for those who are squeamish about raw foods. The fish was super fresh, and I was pleasantly surprised with that, especially from a chain restaurant. The topping selections are great- they've got everything from chopped jalapeños to sliced mangos and mandarin oranges. Be sure to get some masago (fish eggs!) to top off your bowl as well! You finally get to pick a sauce for your bowl to be tossed in. I was basic and chose spicy mayo, but they have a lot of tasty options that are more creative, like a wasabi mayo. Not in the mood to be your own poke chef? No worries! They have tons of pre-selected options if you just want to take it easy! Pokeworks has a couple of add-ons, like a tasty looking mango pudding for dessert, and a miso soup that I got to try. The miso soup was nothing to write home about, and nearly flavorless, save for the garlic chips floating on top. I would skip this next time. The lackluster soup was especially disappointing because I was dining here on the first cold night of autumn, and was looking forward to noshing on something warm to complement the chilled bowl. Oh well. Live n' learn. Prices are comparable to other poke spots in the area, except for Honeyfish, which is super cheap but in a mall food court. The neighborhood is bustling with college kids from Brown, so that adds to the fun, hip, and young vibe of the restaurant. Meh, this place could be a lot better. So the setup is that of a Subway or Chipotle where you walk in and choose a base, protein and toppings. For the base, I chose to do a mix of brown rice and lettuce. Then I asked for two scoops of salmon followed by a bit of ponzu sauce, sriracha, crispy wontons, mango, scallions and maybe a few more things. I paid about $13 for this small bowl and while it wasn't really small in size, it was definitely small in flavor. I called and spoke to someone who suggested I come pick up sauce to which I replied that it kind of defeats the whole purpose of me ordering DoorDash now doesn't it. I usually do not leave a "one star" for an establishment without having to attempt to resolve the issue with the manager. Unfortunately, there was no manager in sight. That, my friends, tell you that there is something wrong with this place. I have been coming here fairly regularly since it opened about a year ago. The food is consistently good (4 star quality) and I like that I can customize my food to my likings. The service has not been that consistent but today was exceptional - in a bad way. I was there on Thursday afternoon around 2 PM. That is after the lunch madness. I thought that I can get a decent service by avoiding the lunch rush. Boy, was I really wrong today! There was only one person there attending to the customer. As I approached the line, as I normally would. Then I had to wait for a few seconds just to see if this short dark hair young lady will notice me. Then, when I realized that she was a bit spaced out, gazing into a void, I try to get attention by saying, "hi, excuse me..." the look I got was chilling! And then she slowly proceeded to put her latex gloves on with great exaggerated motion of a Madonna, and finally asks what I wanted to order. I said "I would like a bowl of Umami Classic, please." I wanted to see if she acknowledges or say something, since she was still looking into to the void. So I asked her, "Hi, did you hear me?" The response I got was so astounding that I had no words! She said, "Oh my gosh, I heard you! What is your problem?" in a very condescending way and rolled her eyes... I worked in a kitchen before when I was younger. I never, ever talked to my customers or my colleagues his way. Have you ever experienced anything like this? I was just so stunned that I literally walked out the door without saying anything. The words to this young lady - if you cannot stand dealing with customers, I don't care what your life circumstances are, don't work in a place like Poke. She was showing me all kinds of facial expressions that she was impatient with me with my orders. On the receipt it say Pokeworks Promise Delicious Food and Friendly Service. We visited Pokéworks on a weekday, about an hour after opening, and ordered two yuzu ponzu salmons as we've never really had Pokéworks before. We took our order home and the bowls are delicious! Unfortunately, I'd reconsider visiting again due to the service. When we entered, it was relatively slow (being a weekday), with maybe one customer in line finishing their order. I don't say this lightly, as I work in food service myself, but the first young lady who started our bowls off needs to be retrained in customer service. She was extremely impatient and I felt extremely rushed in ordering (when there was no need, since no one was in line behind me). I had trouble understanding my different options, but was simply met with a rushed "light, medium, or heavy sauce" repeated over and over. I have trouble with my hearing but I don't appreciate being patronized or sped through my order as if it were a rush hour. Again, good food, but service needs to be worked on. I stopped by for some takeout after work, because the only thing in my fridge are pickles and ketchup. Parking wasn't too bad; Thayer Street is always tricky but there's always a way. It's located in the plaza at the 'end' of Thayer. I got lucky and someone pulled out, so I got a spot right in the parking lot. I feel like sushi is too delicate to jam it into a burrito, so I chose the poke bowl with kale noodle. Salmon +Tuna, chopped shiso, cilantro, cucumber, mango, edamame, ponzu fresh sauce, avocado, green onion, seaweed salad, sesame seeds and wasabi tabiko, garlic chips, and lotus flowers. It - was-freaking- perfect! I had no idea what I was doing, so I was probably a pain in the arse but the girl making it was super nice and patient with me. It was my first time there, and she was just lovely. It comes it a nicely sealed plastic container and kept everything in its place while I drove home (which is a testament to its durability). I sat down on the couch, put some tv on and just enjoyed it. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful and at the end of it all I felt like I had a light but filling, healthy dinner. I thought it was delicious. I eat a lot of sushi and I expected the fish to be mediocre, but I was wrong - it was all very good. There is a lot of ingredients to switch up flavors every time, and keep it interesting. All the colors and textures make it look really appetizing too. OMG so good! I can't even hate on this chain. I ordered the regular size Spicy Ahi bowl with the Sweet & Spicy Gochujang Sauce and a cup of iced Spring Tea. After tax and tip, it came to about $15. That's still much cheaper than going to dine at a sushi restaurant. Pokéworks is like their neighbor, Bajas, but with poké! The extra toppings were such a delightful surprise. You could build your bowl to a mile high. It's insane. I'm about to pop out of my clothes. It's a lot of rice...and I ate it all. Next time I think it would be wise to save some for later. I will definitely be returning over and over again if they stay this good and fresh! I can't wait to try out all of the different combinations. Yeah, it's a chain but it's a pretty awesome chain that I'm happy is finally in Providence. I'd been to the one in New York several and was anxiously awaiting the opening of their Thayer St location. Going the first time can be a daunting experience but once you familiarize yourself with the process and all the options, it's can be really fun to experiment with all the different options. It's essentially a Chipotle for poke. I work in the area and in the past couple weeks, I've been about four times and gotten something a little different each time. I think I actually prefer the burrito over the traditional bowl. Less rice-to-fish ratio and I like the seaweed wrap. It's like a jumbo finger food version of maki. My go-to is some combination of salmon, cucumber, onion, seaweed, avocado, masago, sesame seeds, and wasabi aioli. It's a nice convenient on-the-go lunch. The fish has always tasted fresh and I love the variety of mix-ins and toppings. It's a nice lunch alternative to a sandwich or salad and it tastes seemingly healthy (although, I'm sure the calorie count is shockingly high). Staff seems nice albeit a bit confused at times, which is natural for a new chain restaurant. I'm sure it will only improve with time. Can't wait to keep coming back for more! read more

I bookmarked this place as soon as I heard about it and really just harassed my husband about how soon we could go. The best way to describe what I ate (the Hawaiian Bowl) would be a deconstructed sushi roll with a ton of umami! I opted for one of their signature bowls as the "build your own" was overwhelming as a first timer. My husband got the Umami Bowl. I did add some additional items to my bowl but it was a bit difficult as I wasn't sure what items lay in front of me in some cases...there were a bunch of crispy, crunchy looking things...about 6 different varieties/containers of them. The staff didn't really describe what they were as they awaited my directions of which ones I wanted and there was a long line out the door so i just picked whichever ones looked appealing. I ended up adding sriracha aioli, crab salad, scallions and a bunch of crunchy things. I also got an extra side of the sauces they have available. Oh my, I enjoyed every bite of my meal! I'd like to start by saying that I was born and raised in Hawaii, so I'd like to think I'm pretty credible when it comes to poke. ;) When ordering, I was happy to see that they served sushi rice. Too often, places serve poke with regular white rice (which is fine, but not the same in a poke bowl!) There are a crapload of options when it comes to toppings. I stuck with spicy ahi (tuna) and spicy salmon topped with cucumber and onions. I would highly recommend the spicy salmon. The sauce and topping options are a bit overwhelming ... in fact, pretty much everything here is a bit overwhelming; there are just so many possible combinations. I'd say going simpler is better. This is definitely not the best poke I've ever had (that'd be sad), but it's not the worst! The price is pretty high, so I'd recommend getting a large for around $3 more (+ another scoop of poke). *TIP*: mix the sesame oil and shoyu by the napkins in a to-go sauce container to add more flavor to your poke! The fish could definitely be more fresh and the sauces stronger, but other than that, this place is not bad. It certainly satisfied my craving! :) read more

Not a bad spot. My overall rating would be "surprisingly filling". I did not expect to be this full after having a bowl. So that was a nice surprise. The food is bursting with flavor, and you can tell it's fresh. The fish eggs are marvelous and I have zero complaints about the quality of the food. The only thing I would say is the price for what you get. It is a tad on the pricy side when you look at the amount of food received, but then again you get what you pay for. I really enjoyed the poke burrito I had on Saturday evening. It was definitely my best experience to date with sushi burritos and was far superior to the sushi burrito I had at Jaburritos last year in Vegas. I also thought it was superior to the poke at Poke Bento in Boston. The guy making my burrito was very friendly and chill and patient with my questions about some of the ingredients. I had the spicy salmon and the regular salmon for my proteins and also added avocado, mango, various seaweeds and cucumbers. My only complaints are that the seating area is really small and the wooden stools are rather uncomfortable. Next time, I will take my burrito to go. I ordered via ubereats. It was alright. I think I got a little too enthusiastic (that's what happens when you order hungry lol, but when else are you supposed to order?!) with my toppings. I need to remind myself that sometimes less is more. That being said, all those toppings would've probably been a positive rather than a negative if they themselves were a bit better. So here's what a got: a regular poke bowl with salmon and ahi tuna, lobster added, white rice, and topped with extra avocado, extra kani salad, edamame, mandarin oranges, mango, sweet onion, cilantro, and spicy furakake, sauces (flavors) on the side. I wish I hadn't spent the extra $8 on the lobster. I LOVE lobster, and I will say that they were very generous with it, but it just didn't work in the context of a poke bowl. Too much going on and the flavors just didn't blend. Also, the lobster wasn't the best. It wasn't old, but it seemed like it was frozen. Not surprising given that they really hook you up for $8, but I'd rather get a smaller amount of fresh lobster. That said, I won't get lobster at all in my poke in the future because I just don't think the flavors mix well. Getting extra kani salad was also a mistake. They were VERY generous with it, and I can't fault them for that, but I just didn't need that much and could've easily done with the regular amount. Perhaps I would've appreciated it more had I actually liked the kani salad. I was expecting a Japanese style kani salad, where the kani is in kind of longish strings and aside from a light touch of mayo, there isn't really anything else and all you can taste is the crab. This was more like a Maryland style crab salad except with imitation crab, but it was minced and had the old bay flavor and everything. I really wasn't a fan of that. I want to taste the Kani, and feel the texture of the kani. This was just overly seasoned vaguely crab flavored mush. I'm not a fan of old bay seasoning at all. What I love about crab is it's sweetness, and old bay fights with that and covers it up. The extra avocado was a good choice and I'd definitely do that again. It saved this poke bowl. The fish (ahi tuna and salmon) were both pretty good, nowhere near on par with my favorite sushi place, but I wasn't expecting that. There were a few chunks that were tough (not the best cuts) but for the most part they were pretty tender and definitely seemed fresh enough. The salmon was almost the same color as the tuna though, which was...odd. But I'll chalk it up to the variety of salmon, as it definitely seemed fresh enough. The mandarin oranges turned out to be a great choice, the mango was good too but I could take it or leave it. Edamame was a great choice as well. Furikake I'm still undecided about. I still can't decide if I love or hate the taste of bonito flakes. I love the umami, but I have to get accustomed to that fishiness. I think I'll probably come around though. The white rice was very good too. Oh, and how could I forget-the masago!! That was honestly the star of the show and saving grace of this bowl and I REALLY wish you could get extra masago!! It was just delicious and made everything better. Pokeworks, if you're reading this, PLEASE make extra masago an option! Next time I'll get a simpler bowl with tuna and salmon, masago, and the fruits and veggies (including extra avocado) that I got in this bowl, but I'll skip the crab and lobster and other extras. Overall it was alright, but for $45 total (I also got a miso soup and a drink) I really wish I had just ordered a bunch of nigiri from my favorite sushi place instead. I love trying new things, but I hate taking the risk of spending my money on something that I end up not liking as much as my tried and true favorites. However, you can't discover new favorites without trying new places! Edit: The drink I ordered, which was over $4 (and pretty small) was absolutely disgusting. Undrinkable. The miso soup was missing the most important part-the miso!! HOW do you make a miso soup and forget the freaking MISO?! It tasted alright and I finished it since I like dashi, but it was all dashi and zero miso. Wtf. And finally, they forgot the two extra sauces I ordered which they charged me $0.90 each for. Appalling. I will definitely not be back nor will I recommend. A friend of mine told me about this place. One day after a particularly vigorous walk, we decided to go and refuel. The place itself was very clean and cold (a/c was on full blast, which was nice on a hot day). I'll admit I was a little nervous because I had no idea what to order. My friend told me what she usually gets, so I followed suit with the kale noodles, but then just added the stuff I know I like. I have to say, it was very tasty. I got tuna, salmon and shrimp with mango, edamame, seaweed (the sweet one), sesame seeds, avocado, and crunchy wontons with the Pokeworks classic sauce. They have protein for everyone (fish, chicken, tofu), plenty of toppings, and sauces. I got a salad with regular and spicy salmon. I added avocado, which is $1.50 up-charge. For the price, I was expecting a little more than a melon ball scoop size of avocado. The salmon was good, average quality. Overall, pleased with the options and the pleasant service. For $13 ($11 without the up charges), it left me full, but not stuffed, for a late dinner. I plan on returning soon. read more

Pokeworks is a guilty pleasure of mine and I just can't get enough of it! When I first went to Pokeworks, I wasn't sure what to try. The staff suggested the Hawaiian Classic in a burrito, which is a seaweed wrap. I fell in love with this one particular item. For those who don't know what Poke is, it's a native Hawaiian cuisine. The menu offers chicken based items as well in case fish is not your cup of tea. Personally, I get the Hawaiian Classic, most typically in a bowl with quinoa, add mangos, tangerines, and wonton crunchies. I like to add the sauce lightly to the bowl, but some people like extra sauce... the choice is yours! I have always been happy with Pokeworks and maybe one day I'll try something else. Their teas are delicious as well. Pokeworks also has a loyalty program, so be sure to add their app! You can also pay through the app, which is an added perk. You can order on GrubHub, being that this is in a prime college location. The parking is limited at this location, but I usually drive around the block and find a spot fairly easy. I was feeling like Daddy Warbucks working from home last Friday, so I decided to pony up $23 and order a two protein bowl. It wasn't exactly cheap given it was a Doordash, but man oh man, it was delicious! I've been on a health food kick lately so we decided to check this place out. I mean, poke's gotta be healthy, right? It's fish, after all. Just ignore the mercury, microplastics and nuclear radiation from the Japanese reactor meltdown (think I'm kidding? Try putting a Geiger counter to your sushi order - you may be surprised). OK, back to the review. The menu is confusing with almost too many options. My kid got the #1 and I got the spicy poke special. So why are you asking me about all these other toppings? I don't know what I'm ordering! I don't know what half the things mean! That's why I just asked for the prefab order so you wouldn't have to ask me all these questions. But they forced me anyway and I can't even remember my choices. I just made stuff up. But guess what?! It was pretty tasty. Kinda delicious. A little on the pricey side: $13 for a bowl of anything. But tasty nonetheless. Beginner's luck? Who knows. Will I come back? Sure. And I hope to be offered fewer choices next time with a nice bowl of pickled raw fish deliciousness. read more

Had a poké bowl and it was awesome. Chose the Kale noodles instead of rice. I did however make the mistake of adding "extra" flavor and it was actually alot of dressing lol. All in all was a good experience. I will order again. read more

For about $12 you get a lot of food. It was very filling and satisfying. You get to choose what you want. Its a build your own bowl. You get to choose what you want as you move down the line. I got a sushi rice bowl with tune and all the topping of my choice. They are very generous and you can choose as many as you'd like. Very friendly service. All in all, I will be back. read more

So I have never been here and thought I would try because it was busy. I walked in and wasn't acknowledged you anyone and knew nothing about this business. So a recommendation would have been great, couldn't get one of those. The burrito was a cool idea and the set up looked good BUT fish was room temperature, had a slimy buildup and grossed me out. I wish it was a bit colder like any sushi grade fish you would get elsewhere. I will not be going back here. I'll support other Poke business instead. read more
