I have been visiting this beautiful restaurant for years and used to come for martinis with handed stuffed blue cheese olives, oysters, and shrimp at their well appointed bar. They serve creative seafood and meat dishes, have an extensive wine list, and impeccable service. They have often had at least one plant based main on the menu for as long as I can remember. My diet has changed in the last ten years since going plant based and eliminating animal products. I saw a social media post from Mill's about their new vegan offerings and booked a dinner resy. These folks made our meal memorable: Marcus (our gracious host), Katie (our friendly server), the bartender (I didn't get her name), and the chef who worked hard to craft vegan dishes. The drinks, apps, mains, and desserts were 10/10. Fresh pasta, veggies, mushrooms were cooked and presented perfectly. I'm so happy to still support this place and have a chef that created sustainable options for vegans. Already looking forward to my next visit. read more

We like the restaurant and go there regularly for the food, service, and quiet ambiance. We went with two friends as they have a special menu three course offering for fifty dollars (not including drinks, taxes,or service) on the first three days of the week. We have been there for special menus including Thanksgiving and found them good value. I was the only one drinking and just had a 6oz glass of wine. The others had sparkling water and one drank coffee. I had the calamari which was delicious and the 8oz steak frites - the steak was done just right, medium rare, and the thin fries crispy as I like them. (I had to take home some of the meat home as I couldn't finish it.) My companion had the burrata which was decent and the others started with the Caesar salad which was tasty. One person had the veal which was just okay but nothing to write home about. Two people had the mushroom steak with risotto which was slightly spicy but surprisingly not worth having - both diners were disappointed and left much of it uneaten. (I tried it and was also unimpressed.) Three of us ordered the bread pudding and I ate the affogato. They were up-to par. Our server was cheerful and efficient. She did a good job, bustling around. The meal was prepared by the sous chef with the chef away on a break. (We have been here with better meals prepared by him.) My starter came way before the other appetizers (not good). For once, we were generally unimpressed and unhappy with our food, which did not deserve more than 2 1/2 stars. I gave it a low two.. I was going to recommend the restaurant to gourmet visitors who will coming from Paris in the later summer, but decided that I will not do so. We sat at the bar with Tony, who was an amazing professional bartender. We started with two Sims Ave martinis, which were very good, we had a couple of blue cheese olives to go with it. The first appetizer was Michelin quality. Wagyu Ta Ta with bone marrow. What a treat! The rotating little necks were also Michelin quality. Everything cooked perfectly and the flavors were out of this world. There wasn't a drop left! The prime New York strip was good, but I'm not sure if it was a prime cut? It was cooked medium rare as ordered and we opted for the cherry Demi to give it little extra flavor. Next time, I will need to try the wagyu tasting. Tony ended the night with a birthday surprise with my panna cotta with some complimentary prosecco. We couldn't have asked for a better night. We have been here before and the food was good but was much better the last time. Cocktails were good as were the calamari appetizers. Folks in our party that had Pasta and salmon enjoyed their food. We had a great meal last night during the Firewater festival! It was my partner's birthday and I merely mentioned it in the reservation. They had a birthday card on the table for us when we sat. Our oysters and caviar were delicious. Steaks and asparagus were delicious too. Bread pudding with a candle was delightful. The staff was attentive and the vibe was super. We invited our friends out for an impromptu double date to take advantage of the Restaurant Week specials at Mills Tavern--dressed up and all. I had high expectations based on recommendations from friends, and I'm happy to say the evening lived up to the hype. We had an 8:00 p.m. reservation, but our table was ready well ahead of time. The restaurant wasn't too busy or crowded, which made for a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Our server, Sarah, was kind and attentive, taking the time to describe each dish as it arrived. We were pleasantly surprised with freshly baked bread served alongside a trio of butters--Black Sea salt, rosemary, and red pepper. We were also treated to an amuse-bouche: a tart shell filled with a yuzu shrimp and halibut ceviche-style mixture. A lovely touch! From the Restaurant Week menu: The calamari was lightly fried, perfectly crispy, and incredibly fresh. The Rosemary Lemon Bell & Evans Statler Chicken Breast was flavorful and tender, served with buttery potatoes and a rich Dijon chicken demi-glace. The bread pudding was warm, comforting, and finished with a delicious caramel drizzle. I also added the wine pairing for an extra $20--and as a wine lover , I'm so glad I did. The Italian Gavi was light and crisp with a mineral finish. The Oregon Pinot Noir had deep notes of plum and raspberry. The tawny port was smooth with a fig-like sweetness that paired beautifully with the dessert. Overall, it was a fantastic date night at a refined, upscale restaurant. Inside is pretty large and many seatings are available along with bar. We were quickly sat down and looked through the menu. During restaurant week they offered few selections of 3 course meal which consist of starter, main dish, and desert. I chose point Judith's calamari for starter, angus filet mignon with pepper sauce, and sorbet tastings. Everything was good. Calamari was lightly fried and had good flavor and seasonings. Filet mignon was perfectly cooked and pepper sauce was excellent. Sorbet was light and refreshing. Service was very good and the waitress was attentive. Overall the place was very good. I went for dinner last night for the full first time. I knew they have a new chef, the new chef is vegan and was on Hell's Kitchen. I was really impressed. Our server was really attentive and knowledgeable. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful too. To start the meal we had two different kinds of freshly baked bread and 4 types of butter. I really wanted to get one of the veg options, they looked so good. But they have a new seasonal menu with a great fish option. I tried the seared salmon with lentils and baba ganoush, it was great. Some of my family members had steak and said it was cooked well. We had calamari to start and it was great. My cocktail was equally as good too. My sister in law had the scallops and they were cold when she was eating them but really tasty. The server offered us complimentary desserts to remedy this, so kind! I came here with a large group and they accommodated us very well! The service was amazing and extremely attentive, the restaurant looked classy, and the area around the restaurant is cute. The food was great for the most part. I got the 6 oz steak and it was delicious with bacon bits on top. My friends got the chicken and loved it, they said it was very juicy and well-seasoned. I also had a Caesar salad to start and it was delicious. The desserts were top notch: my favorite was the crème brûlée. One of my friends got the gnocchi though and did not like it because the gnocchi was fried, interesting.. Overall: great upscale restaurant that serves big groups well read more

Beautiful restaurant, delicious food and strong cocktails. Our new fave steakhouse in PVD. Service was a bit slow but fine. We started with a Caesar salad and tuna tartare. The salad wasn't as well dressed as we like and the tuna tartare did not taste super fresh. Next time, we'll skip the apps. For entrees, we had the braised short rib special and a NY strip. Both delicious. Better than any steak we've had at a couple of other known steakhouses in the city. The Brussels Sprouts side were the star of the night. They were beautifully charred and so delicious. The Gorgonzola cheese was an unexpected but delicious addition. It was a good portion but we still wanted more. We agreed that we would come back just for the Brussels Sprouts lol. We ended with an espresso martini and the strawberry shortcake sundae. The dessert was OK but would skip next time. Would also request a different table. We were stuck in a corner (71) almost on top of another table. It was uncomfortable and we didn't have a nice view of the restaurant. Spontaneity double date! My friend suggested this place for a double date due to the restaurant week specials and of course I needed to try it out. The restaurant week was only $55 for a three course meal with some additions like lobster, $21, or 3 wine tastings pairs for $21. I added the wine tasting because it was needed! Friend says this spot is known for its wine too~ As a start, had the calamari, which was amazingly crunchy, savory, and not like your usual overly greasy dishes. This was light, fresh, lightly seasoned and the calamari taste was very present. I had the chicken, which was soft and savory, with very soft potatoes~ my partners filet mignon was the better dish after stealing a slice~ for desert, we all tried the different desserts, pudding bread, sorbet, and Vanilla creme Brûlée ! Brûlée was simple, nothing too special. The bread was amazingly, warm and cozy. The sorbet was very fresh after our heavy meal. The chef did give us an extra bite! A small bite size dish, with shrimp, with yuzu sauce. I wish I could describe it better but it was very delicious and subtly sweet savory bite. Wish I had more. Our server was Sarah, and she was kind, prompt and attentive to our empty dishes, and taste of the food. She did amazing memorizing all the descriptions of the food and wine. I'm no expert in wine, and I did nod at the beautiful descriptive wording of the food and its ingredients or flavor themes. This place wasn't crowded and we enjoyed our late Tuesday dinner time with no crowds or wait time. Our reservation was definitely ready for us. This place is a "special occasion" spot for sure. Went here for a work-related dinner recently, and I'm sorry to say it was disappointing. From the "bread" and butter (tiny crostini-type rounds with a crunchy edge) to the calamari appetizer, nothing wowed me. (I take that back -- our waiter was AMAZING!) I ordered swordfish which came with root veggies. Fish was very dry, and root veggies were tasteless. I tried a bite of someone's Mac and cheese, and even that was underwhelming. Positives: Side Caesar with anchovies was decent, and the steaks that others had looked tasty. I expected more given the ambiance, price of the food and the reputation of the restaurant. I would try one of the many Providence restaurants before returning here. read more

We had a great experience at Mill's Tavern! Although parking can be a challenge even on weekdays, there is a valet service and plenty of street parking nearby if you know where to look. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside, with just the right amount of lighting. I tried a number of their appetizers, including their oysters, calamari, and charcuterie. They were all delicious and the oysters were fresh. I really liked my first course of tuna tartare. I ordered the seafood risotto for my main entree, which was rich and tasty. Service was excellent. My friend brought me here for my birthday. I suggested it since I had been here years ago and remember it being good. I was craving steak so I went in knowing what I wanted. We had a nice little nook, and I appreciated the single violet carnation they had as a table decorator. I did not anticipate ordering starters but my waiter convinced me on trying some of their oysters simply from reciting the special ones they had and regular menu ones. We each tried one Canadian oyster and one oyster with caviar. The one with caviar was obviously my favorite. The textures and flavors were more complex. For my main, I ordered the ribeye steak since I like some marbling and wanted something juicy. I haven't been brave enough to order my steak medium so my waiter was nice enough to let the chef know to cook mine medium "plus"--just a tad longer than medium which was perfect for me. One small observation was that the first few bites were really lovely and over time, it sort of lost its "wow". I'm not sure if it was just because I wasn't starved anymore. We also ordered a mac and cheese for the both of us. The serving size is good for 2, maybe more if you're having more than one side. The flavor was good, I especially liked the little bacon lardon pieces inside. I didn't think I'd be able to finish my steak, but I did, and as a reward, I ordered a dessert. I had their ube cheesecake. The presentation was phenomenal, really pretty. I loved the flavor of the cheesecake and it was soft but not mushy. I enjoyed the little sorbet to the side and the tartness of the raspberries to balance the sweet. I enjoyed my dinner here and would recommend it for a good dinner out in the city. Since none of us wanted to prepare a Thanksgiving meal, we decided to leave it to the professionals! Apparently that was a poor decision. Started out well with valet and table available on time. Drinks were great, and the salads too. The mashed potatoes were the highlight of the Thanksgiving plate. Both the light & dark turkey were extremely dry - and no offer of extra gravy, which a thoughtful hostess would offer knowing turkey is overcooked. Sweet potatoes sliced with still raw mini marshmallows on top. I literally should have prepared this meal at home because it would have tasted so much better. Dessert - not a pie in sight. Nobody wanted bread pudding, so we chose a chocolate pecan tart thing - which did disappoint. Armed with only a spoon it was nearly impossible to break off a bite. Not an offer of coffee. Seemed like it may have been the waiter's first day. Long story short, I wish I would have spent $55 at NY System or somewhere that delivers the meal customers expect. We were looking for dinner, and I spotted this place as the number 1 Steakhouse on Yelp. So we had to try it. It was a short walk from the Graduate Biltmore hotel across the river, very easy to do. This is a very nice place - the bar is extensive, the bartenders are amazing (I snuck a look at their mixing), and the service was excellent. We were never wanting for water or wine to be poured. Lots of deep brown wood - look at the shelves on the columns near the bar for some interesting wine-related eye candy. The place was pretty quiet on a Thursday night, and it was romantic. We were greeted promptly and seated on arrival. Water was brought out - you get your choice - we took still water. Then bread with butter, which was tasty. For started, we split a Caesar salad, which did have anchovies (white anchovies) which were quite tasty. I ordered their 8 ounce filet, while my wife had their Beef Ragu. The filet was very tender, on a bed of onions and mushrooms I believe with the Mills Tavern steak sauce over it. The beef ragu was very tasty with wagon wheel pasta. To go with this, we ordered and split an order (the orders are family sized) of their Red Roasted Potatoes, which were pretty good. To go with this, we selected a bottle of Penfolds Cabernet, which was quite a good balance for the meal. We wrapped up the meal with a Crème Brule that we shared. It was quite good, and then even included a Happy Anniversary plaque since I was traveling for my job and missed my anniversary this year. Quality costs so you can expect around $110 to $150 per person with a good bottle of wine. This was a very good meal, and I can see why this place holds the top rank in Yelp. read more

This is going to be the last time we come here. The last two times were amazing. We came about two years ago for our anniversary and had the tomahawk. I'd like to start off by saying our server was amazing, despite the disappointing food. We made a 7-7:30 reservation for our anniversary this year and we were pretty surprised at how quiet it was for a Thursday night. Only three other tables were seated so it was pretty quiet. I asked for a virgin mojito and was given one with parsley I believe. We started off with the calamari and roasted bone marrow with the wagyu appetizers and the roasted bone marrow and wagyu tasted the exact same. No difference in flavor that would complement each other. I had the short rib and was looking forward to trying it but it was completely tasteless. There was no richness in flavor whatsoever. It was so bland. I didn't want to ask for a different dish since it was so late at night and I was so hungry. But we did let our server know. We tried to make the best of it, but it was the worst short rib I have ever had. read more

Our table was very close together with the other tables, but it was workable to fit in between to get to your seat. Our server was very kind and made sure to get us a wedge to stabilize our wobbly table, and we definitely did not feel rushed while dining and ordering! I had the bacon wrapped venison cooked rare, and it was delicious! It was tender and flavorful without being too gamey or tough. The chocolate mousse was also delicious with well balanced flavors. This is a very nice place for a special occasion or just to get a fancy dinner. The service was excellent, the ambiance was had nice low lighting and wasn't too loud, and the bread was soft with a crunchy crust. They change menus seasonally, and I got the Long Island Duck Breast which I believe isn't always available, but it was so juicy and tender. It came with a side of squash and a cherry glaze that paired really well with it. He got a steak which was perfectly cooked. His didn't come with a side, so he got an individual mashed potatoes and we shared a mac and cheese, which was super creamy. At the end we were too full for dessert, but they had some good-looking options. Maybe next time. This was a great dining experience, and I highly recommend. read more

Went here last Saturday night to celebrate a milestone birthday for my best friend. Valet parking was available. Atmosphere was intimate and clean. We were a party of 5 and were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Unfortunately, things declined from there... Our waitress was prompt initially, then seemed to disappear. We frequently had to stop other staff to ask for her return. The drinks from the bar were tasty as was the bread on the table. When it came time to take our food order, the waitress asked about any food allergies to which I gave her a list of mine, including blue cheese. More on that later... Three of us ordered the special which was a 45 day aged steak, and got an array of sides, including Brussel sprouts. We each ordered our specials medium rare. One arrived rare and two completely raw (everywhere we cut, not just in the middle). The other two entrees (venison & the regular sirloin) were both also undercooked, but still edible. And the Brussel sprouts had blue cheese in them despite our request to omit it. Fortunately, I noticed the crumbles and hadn't eaten any. When we finally got the waitress to come back, she apologized, took the raw steaks and stated she would get us new ones and a new plate of Brussel spouts. Five minutes later, a different server arrived with THE SAME STEAKS they took back. Seems they simply re-fired them rather than starting anew. He asked us to cut into them, but walked away before we could respond. And the kicker...they were still raw. 25 minutes later, the waitress came back, apologized again, and offered to send it back again. By this point, I was so frustrated and disappointed that I told them I no longer wanted it. I will say, what other food that was edible was tasty, but not spectacular. The manager did come by, apologize and offered to get me something else. He took my steak off the bill, but not the other. Overall, for the price we paid, I expected much, much better. Not just in terms of being able to cook a steak properly, but in service as well. We will not be returning. read more

This was my first experience at Mills Tavern. What stood out to me the most was the quality of the service. Our waiter went above and beyond for us. I ended up splitting the 32 ounce Australian Wagyu with a friend and found it to be pretty filling. We went with chefs recommendation for cooking and found medium rare to be perfect. For sides the crispy brussel sprouts were my personal favorite. The wine was fantastic and reasonably priced for a steak house but certainly not cheap. The walk ability of the location and the coat check where also nice aspects that I appreciated. I do not know if this place has a dress code but be mindful you will likely feel under dressed compared to some other patrons as many were in jackets and cocktail dresses so my oxford shirt with khakis felt a little casual comparatively. read more

For a few years, Mills Tavern was my wife and I's "go to place" for a great meal, often times a last minute decision for a quick ride down to RI. The last few times we've visited, our meals were far below the high standards of this restaurant, most noteably their meat entrees. Each of the last 3 times we've been served dinners that we're cold as well as over cooked, completely avoidable and no excuse for this to occur so many consecutive times. The bar is great as well as the bartenders ability to satisfy all with their expertise however, these two regular customers unfortunately won't be returning anytime soon. read more

It is a romantic, old-school fancy, and very popular restaurant. Unlike some restaurants selling more ambiance than food, this place has amazing dishes and vibes. The servers there were always friendly and appropriately attentive, which didn't interrupt the conversation and got everything done on time. I enjoyed the salmon and the lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The only thing I was not into were the boiled purple carrots in salmon, but it paired okay with the other ingredients on the plate. The Swiss chard as a bed for a salmon was scrumptious! The rack of lamb was undercooked and mostly fat; a very poor quality cut. It was disappointing, and disgusting. Our waiter delivered our meals and we never saw him again until it was time for him to provide us the bill. What a disappointment. Haven't been back here for a variety of reasons, but after my first experience here, I've really been wanting to come back again. I don't know if they changed ownership or management, but my experience today was certainly subpar in comparison. The food was just ok, poor if you consider that this is a more high-end restaurant. For apps, the calamari was greasy, and the flat bread was doughy and lacked flavor. For sides the brussel sprouts were hard. The mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese were good. I had the prime ny strip and it was cooked well, but didn't really have the same beef flavor that you get with higher end cuts of steak. When you get an excellent steak, it doesn't need sauces or toppings, the beef speaks for itself. This one was a mild whisper. The service wasn't nearly as good as it was during my first visit, but considering how places are understaffed these days, I'm hesitant to really speak poorly on that. All in all, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Given all the establishments in Providence, I don't see myself coming back here again. read more

The food was nothing short of amazing. The Bacon wrapped Venison was cooked to perfection finished with an excellent glaze. The creme brulee was the best I've had in a long time. Had an impromptu date night with my husband and spent an hour looking at all the restaurants to eat at in Providence. I wanted somewhere that was an experience with unique options! Mills Tavern exceeded our expectations. It was dim, intimate, and so nice inside. We had the wagyu tartar bone marrow special, it was such a fun eat and extremely good. The Venison was perfectly buttery and oh so tender and not gamey at all. We would get it over and over again. The halibut was cooked to perfection, not an exciting dish, but classic and delicious. The Brussels sprouts were spot on! All paired with a beautiful French Gamay. Lastly the Maple Crème Brûlée was the cherry on top of our meal. We move a lot so this will be a place we will always remember from Providence and hope to get to eat again! Our server was so kind and attentive, I can't remember his name but he was young! If I could rate 10 stars, I would! My family and I had to grab dinner last minute one rainy night. My family had arrived in town late from a long day of traveling to celebrate my law school graduation. Most of us were rain soaked and in leggings. We couldn't find a place around the city that wasn't already fully committed when we walked into Mills. I expected them to turn us away because of our casual dress, but our server Lynn couldn't have been more welcoming. My family and I all agreed this was the best meal we ate during my graduation weekend. We also agreed Lynn was the kindest and best server! She even wrote me a little congratulations message on my dessert. Thank you Lynn, and thank you Mills Tavern for such a wonderful experience and delicious food. read more
