TL;DR: Very good food, but common order errors and no way to contact the store quickly. My experience has varied greatly depending on whether I've ordered in-person or online, but not due to the online service. First and foremost: Calling their phone number [617-996-1198] does /not/ ring to the business. It rings to a cellphone for someone named Caspar Sue. Hold music plays for about thirty seconds to a minute, and you're eventually brought to a voicemail box that, as far as I can tell, isn't answered. Perhaps their phone number was misrepresented online once, and that error has been repeated elsewhere? Either way, this means that issues with orders or service are /not/ addressable unless you're in-person or through a service. (If services like GrubHub and DoorDashed have a different number for them, I don't know it.) As mentioned by others, the wide variety of options makes it incredibly hard for workflow, and it shows in confusion, repeated questions, and order errors. To give an idea of the variety offered in a Make Your Own bowl, they have: - multiple sizes (and thus amounts of protein) - seven protein options - four carb options for their bowls - eight sauces (and three amount of sauce options) - 11 "mix-ins" - 9 toppings - and 7 "crunch" additions. This is excellent, and what brought me there in the first place! But it's a real challenge for the people who work there. Additionally, some of their carbs/mix-ins/toppings/crunch options cost extra, and aren't listed as such on their website. This means even comparably "simple" custom orders often have items missing. As an example: a "large poke bowl with quinoa, two servings of salmon and one of tofu, medium umami shoyo sauce -- with all the mix-ins but jalapenos, onions, and the ones that cost more, all crunch choices except the ones that cost more, and the toppings crab salad, masago, seaweed salad, and sesame seeds" is still /19 things/ to remember to add to the bowl. And that's without remembering the size, protein, and sauce. In other words, if you want to take advantage of the amazing variety, you need to pay a lot of attention to what the server is adding, and a lot of patience. The couple of times I've ordered through a service like GrubHub or DoorDashed, the bowl has consistently been missing a handful of items, even if their order form has them checked off correctly. From most restaurants, I'd give a lower rating for regularly missing items from my order. But this level of customization is /hard/, and not one I'm certain they can field well if the restaurant is busy. They could really stand to have their phone number updated, though. read more

Been dying to try this place for a while, and finally got the chance this weekend! Overall a great experience--food was fresh and delicious, very filling, and really unique and fun. Only downside is you could feel the staff rushing due to the busy night, and it resulted in somewhat unfriendly service. Also, if you're not sure what you're doing in this concept, or nervous on how to order, they won't be the most helpful or eager to explain certain ingredients. Happy to see Poke open in Boston. But this was not nearly as good as the ones I had in new york. The service was not good either. Rushed and kind of rude. I have ordered twice online in a month and will NEVER go back in here again. I ordered three bowls and all three were messed up both times. Delicious! I've been to the one in Manhattan but I wasn't a huge fan, but I love sushi so I gave this one a chance. Here the fish was fresh and the right temperature. I got a sushi burrito and it was really good. Flavorful with a slight kick. A little on the expensive side but not terrible. I would go more often but Somerville is hard for me to go to. Loved this spot! Everything was sanitary and delicious, the only complaint I have is that there was not enough space for sitting. We stood at counter at the window but I could even see my food because the sun was so bright haha. I appreciated that the people making your poke asked if you wanted anything else and how much sauce you wanted. I loved the customization of the food and how fresh it all was. I have never had poke before, so I have nothing to compare it to (I also doubt they are going all in on authenticity). That said, I found it to be very tasty. I ordered the Hawaiian classic bowl with brown rice. Everything tasted clean and fresh, with just enough different flavors to make it interesting without making it taste muddy or overpowering the tuna. They also hit the sweet spot for menu diversity, with enough choices to be meaningful, but not so many as to overwhelm. read more

I came here around 7:30pm on a Thursday. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed the minimalistic style. All the tables were fully seated. There is space for additional seating that should be utilised. There were people who had to stand because of limited seating. I got a large poke bowl with salmon and tuna. The different flavours of sauces were impressive. The total price for a large bowl came out to slightly over $14. All the other poke places I've been to have been between 9-12.50 for a large. After getting the bowl I was able to get a seat. I had to share a chair with a member of my group because of lack of seating (only a minor inconvenience). The bowl was good however, it was expensive for what it was. For the price, I would choose quite a few other spots first. I'm not sure if I will return. read more

I use to come here very often, like, 3 punch cards often. I've since stopped coming because of multiple occasions where the manager made me feel very uncomfortable with how she was treating and speaking to her employees. Very rude and condescending, belittling, and just unnecessary. I don't want to give my business to place that doesn't care about their employees. There's a reason this place can't seem to hold any employees, I wouldn't want to work here either. If you want REAL poke there's Manoa on beacon street. Probably the best raw fish salad ever! The staff were super nice and so many choices to choose from. Probably the fruit ice tea was a little watery and tasteless but still refreshing! I really want to be able to give this place a higher rating because the food is actually really tasty, but there's something about the atmosphere that is very unappetizing. I've been 3 times and each time I feel like the silence is deafening and the air is sort of damp and humid. Additionally, the last time I went the bowls and trays they were pulling out were still soaking wet from the dishwasher and had bits of food stuck to them, which is enough to make me lose my appetite. It's sort of hit or miss depending on the day--some times have been seemingly cleaner than others. Still, the fish is surprisingly fresh and I find it to be a good size portion, though the prices are a bit steep. I end up paying like $13-14 without even ordering a drink for a regular size bowl. My one other gripe is that if you go in the evening for dinner, you might not get what you want. I ordered a spicy ahi bowl, only to be told by the time I got to the fish section that they were out of ahi and they weren't sure how long it would be until they replenished it. New Hot Spot for sushi!!! This place was amazing. You make your own sushi bowl. All their ingredients are fresh and their sauces are so flavorful. It's a little overwhelming for the first time but the staff helps in answering any questions. They also gave me suggestions and helped me decide on what to order. To start off, I am an avid Pokeworks fan here in Davis Square. I usually get it at least once a week. Recently, I have noticed new employees that have ruined my experience and interest in coming back. One specifically works there just to ruin your $13 meal. When I asked for white rice, this employee looked at me liked I had two heads only for her to finally say brown rice or quinoa. She scooped the salmon from the liquid bottom of the filled pan with little to nothing to show. Don't waste your time specifying how much of something you'd like because they WILL put too much. And I hope you don't like sauce because your fish can swim with how much they drown your bowl. You pay an arm and a leg for fast food, it may as well be close to done right. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I wondered how a place that touts itself as "fast food"/fast casual could offer cheap but quality fish. I was proven wrong! The regular bowl was a good size, there were tons of toppings and in generous amounts, and they definitely did not skimp on the fish. At first, I thought the price was on the expensive side (~$13). But in comparison, a regular sushi roll at a Japanese restaurant costs about that much, sashimi even more, and the stuff at pokeworks is definitely bigger. Food is great, love the concept -- eaten here three times and still feel like I have more to try. Salmon / fish is very fresh and love the abundance of toppings. Small gripe was that avocado was browning and did not look appealing. Bigger gripe relates to staffing -- on 2 of my three visits there was blatant discord between staff on the production line. On today's visit, the guy rolling my burrito and the cashier were having an argument right in front of me, I felt a little uncomfortable. And the whole process seemed to take longer than it should. Partially because they seemed understaffed. And partially because the person filling the burrito bore the brunt of the work while both the first person asking the order and the last person (cashier) were mostly standing around. Not such an issue now since place Is New and still popular. And I'll be back soon. But inevitably, as the early excitement wears off, people are going to come in, see the line is crazy long and moving slow, and opt to eat elsewhere. read more
