Drove 50 minutes in the woods to get to this place, some roads being stone. We had no service and I definitely recommend filling up on gas!!! It's like something straight out of a movie set. Honestly, you half expect for a gun fight to occur right in front of the saloon. It is an amazing environment that transports you back 250 years. And - to think . . . You can experience it all be done by driving on some dirt roads and a little bit of gravel. Polebridge is a Glacier staple! The huckleberry bear claw is what they are known for -- very good. I like savory bakery items though. Their croissants are phenomenal! I had one with ham, pesto and Asiago and man was it good. I've had a savory scone too...alright, not very memorable. They sell at the Whitefish farmer's market and at a little shop downtown if you don't want to make the trek to Polebridge! Actual Polebridge is cute and located on a gravel road some ways from West Glacier. My wife and I have wanted to visit Glacier National Park for many years, and finally made the trip this spring. Bowman Lake was on our list as one of our destinations, and we heard that the road just got opened up a few days before. The Polebridge Mercantile is a cute and fun, and a welcome surprise in the middle of the beautiful wilderness. Bathrooms were extremely clean, and the store itself was super fun! If you have spent any time reading the reviews, you already know that the Huckleberry Bear Claws are the star of the show, and not to be missed. I'm pretty sure that the bakers make the short drive to heaven each morning to get the day's ingredients, and then combine them and bake them with world class skill to create one of the best tasting pastries I have ever had. My wife and I decided to share one of the Bear Claws, since they are large and massive and huge and big. However, after we left and headed toward Bowman Lake, it was just a few hundred yards when my wife broke the silence by saying, "my only regret is that we only got one." Later in the day, as we were returning from our visit to the lake, we swung by the Mercantile again, and picked up two more Bear Claws to enjoy later during our trip. If you are anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, it would not be too far of a drive to head to Polebridge to get a Huckleberry Bear Claw, or two, or three. Yes, they are that good! read more

This review is only of the Polebridge Mercantile. This is seriously the best bakery in the world! I stopped in last summer (07) on the way to Kintla lake at Glacier National park by fate because the road in the park was closed for wildlife preservation. So I pulled up my car to check this place out. And you could smell something delicious which turned out to be freshly made bear claws and danishes. I decided to try one on a whim and it was out of this freakin world good. I was shocked cause who is gonna think the world's greatest bakery is in some dirt road town in Montana but it seems the higher powers are not without a sense of humor. This place was so good I kept coming back from Kintla Lake and the hostel to try new things. They had these great meat sandwiches. But my hands down favorite thing was the huckleberry Macaroons. I even went out of my way taking a bakers dozen back to the other side of the park to mail them to my parents. Apparently they lasted less than a day at the rents. read more

Let me tell you, when you are this far removed from civilization and need gas, food, or essentials to make life bearable and possible, and they happen to have it, that's when it's a 5 star grocery store. It also gets 5 stars because of their pastries and confections. Choose one, any one. Whatever you choose it will be the best you ever had. Trust me on this one. Oh, and don't fool yourself ; when you say, "These are so good, I think I'll will pick up a few more and take them back to town/camp for my friends." What a find! We were exploring this section of Glacier and had no idea the mercantile and adjacent restaurant were out there in the middle of nowhere. The mercantile was packed. You walk in and immediately fall in love with all of the freshly baked goods. You continue on to find a warming cabinet full of 6-8 varieties of hot sandwiches. And it all tasted just as good as it looked. We bought a hot forest ham and cheese, hot spinach and brie, cinnamon roll, huckleberry bear claw, oatmeal raisin cream cheese cookie and soda. We took it to the picnic tables in front of the restaurant and had a wonderful lunch. Had the cinnamon roll the next morning and it was still awesome. Froze the bear claw and had it a week later. Was not as good as it looked but sure it would have been better fresh. read more

This is a definite stop while visiting Glacier - pretty much the last place to load up on supplies and maybe get out a postcard (there's a USPO window inside). Lots of snacks here including the obligatory fried pies - do yourself a favor and try anything with huckleberries - simply delicious. Really wanted to like this place, but for the money ($150 a night for a cabin) this place is way over-priced. The cabins all share a bathhouse/bathroom with the bar crowd (filthy all weekend), the cabins are clean but close together (eg views into your neighbor's windows), and there are visitors/staff walking past all the time. Pastries are decent but nothing to write home about. Better off getting a forest service cabin or just camping. read more

omg. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. 15, 20, however many stars there are in the world, they deserve it. This is a hole in the wall off a dirt road in the middle of nowhere - and it is AMAZING. I swear this isn't because I was just so excited to find something good in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't even *looking* for food, I just needed a restroom. But once I walked in and smelled the fresh baking, I could not restrain myself from buying a million things. There was a couple there buying a few dozen cookies, and they asured me it was just as good as it smelled, and man they were right. I bought a sandwich for lunch, and a dozen cookies, and a loaf of bread to take as a present for my friend who would be hosting me that evening. And every single thing was completely amazingly wonderful scrumptious. I don't think I've ever used the word scrumptious before. If you are going to Glacier - you MUST stop at Polebridge. Stop in the morning before a hike and pick up some wonderful sandwiches for your lunch, and lots of other things to snack on over the next few days. :-) read more

Location: In Montana wilderness at the Polebridge entrance of Glacier National Park i.e. in the middle of no-where, you need to drive on un-paved dirt road for 14miles to get to this small 'town' that still seems to be stuck in the mid 1900s. But, it is definitely worth the ride. Cabins: We have stayed at the log cabin for 1 night. The cabin is primitive which means that you have no electricity and no sheets on the beds. The cabin had a Queen bed and a double+twin bunk bed. All these beds had mattress but we had use our sleeping bags to keep ourselves warm. The cabin has facility for a wooden fireplace, gas lantern and water though. One important thing to note is that bathroom is also primitive like the one you would find in a campground. Bakery: I have to agree with all the other reviewers that this is the BEST bakery and the best of Polebridge. We woke-up in the cabin to a cold september morning and were welcomed to freshly baked breakfast sandwitches that were melting in our mouth. read more

I haven't tried out the cabins, but if you are within a three-hour radius of Polebridge I would suggest a trip to "the Merc". My family was staying in Whitefish but decided to take a trip to the Glacier National Park entrance at Polebridge for a day hike. Everyone told us about the amazing bakeries (note the plural) in Polebridge, so I imagined it to be one of those small towns with one central road that sported a few bakeries and some coffee houses. In fact, Polebridge consists of a sign that says "Welcome to Polebridge", the "Polebridge Mercantile" (the Merc), and a few cabins behind the Merc. There is not even a central street - the Merc sits beside the "highway", aka the dirt road on which we drove in. Though this made me a bit apprehensive, I have to admit that the cookies and breads at the Merc taste delightful. Upon returning to Whitefish I found myself recommending Polebridge's "baked goods" (it sounded better in my mind than "single store that happens to produce awesome cookies and breads"). We stopped by the Merc after our hike, somewhat unsure of what we would find but positive we could not leave Polebridge without at least trying one baked item. When we walked in a tray of cookies just out of the oven plopped on the counter in front of us and we received a paper plate with three on it, chocolate chips melting everywhere. I bake a lot of cookies but I have never made or tasted anything better than that Polebridge treat. A baker's dozen bag of those delectable cookies is only $5. I'd recommend buying at least a baker's dozen per person, because they go fast. read more

The Polebridge Mercantile is an awesome roadtrip stop - pretty much a travelers oasis that is permanently stuck in time and is all things Montana! Overall an awesome gift shop and bakery (stopped here twice!) complete w wood creeky floors, a fresh fruit & veggie stand, and some people actually live in this small camper's type of a town. There's definitely better bakeries in the world - but the overall vibe and location of this place puts it in a class of its own. So far Ive had their famous huckleberry bear claws, a huckleberry danish, and a pecan sticky bun - all f*cking excellent! read more

Well, we rented a cabin down the road a piece, so my review is for the Merc alone...but trust, me, the Merc is all you really need to know in these parts. Like Douglas G. said: If you're in the neighborhood and DON'T stop? Quit reading, because you'll be kicking yourself until you come back. Here is a list of some of my favorite things to do at the Merc during a visit. 1. Sleep in, but still manage to go on a long day hike in the park. End up at the Merc sometime just before closing. Drink some clear spring water, and gorge oneself on carbs (which are now guilt free on the account of the hiking!) 2. Get up early. Stop at the Merc for some piping hot coffee and stock up on housemade, foil-wrapped pastrami sandwiches for lunch later that day. 3. Lounge around. Take pictures of Glacier from any angle. Walk to the Merc at dusk. Splurge on bear claws for no good reason while checking email etc. on Kindle from tables in the back. Sneak a beer if you can. I never end up here in the summer, so I haven't experienced the town festival, Fourth of July parade, or any of that. BUT--this is a great place to hide out in in the fall or early winter. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by. It's very special. read more

So, I thought going to Polebridge would be fun because there would be a pole bridge, but there wasn't a pole bridge. Instead, there was this really weird town with a few buildings, some very nice dogs, and a dirt road in and out. This little shop is the best gift shop in the entire state of Montana. Some people would say it's "expensive", but I don't exactly see power lines, water pipes, and a sewage system out there, so I have a hard time faulting them for their prices. I didn't sample the pastries, but they smelled heavenly. Sufficient ingredients were available to make some pretty exotic dishes, and the quality of snacks was so far above anywhere else I have been in Montana. The merchandise is a pretty odd selection of hand made goods that you might actually want to buy. If I'm back in the area, I would probably stay close by, the vibe around Polebridge was great. read more

We went here because of so many local and yelp recommendations. It's a bit of a scenic drive on gravel roads. Everyone BRAGGGGED on their baked goods so we got a few. I was a little disappointed, maybe I'm a bakery snob. I would say their huckleberry bran muffin might just be heaven in your mouth though so definitely pick up one or twelve of those. And the Huckleberry Claw was great. You can get a bakers dozen for $5 which wasn't bad so we got an assortment of cookies. The only cookie I really liked was the double chocolate. The cookies were a little disappointing though so I would say stick with the pastries, and double your order to go. Definitely worth the drive once, but probably not an every-day trip. The bathroom is a wooden porta-potty. Oh and there's WiFi, and a great view of the mountains. read more
