The blonde girl who was at the counter today 7/24 at 5pm was extremely rude. After a long day of hike and driving on gravelly road, I went in this bakery and saw this sour faced blonde girl, unwelcoming and unfriendly. She was busy talking to her coworkers, no greeting and didn't even look at me. Tried to make small talk but she wouldn't have it. Finally, I asked the total of my purchase and she snapped "22$". I gave her my card, didn't tip because why would I and she saw that I didn't tip her, she turned and looked at her friend who was also at the counter, rolled her eyes and made a face. Like, why would I even tip you girlie if you were rude at the beginning. Just ruined my trip. I was extremely exhausted from a long day of hiking and driving to this place only to be greeted by a sour faced teenage blonde girl. However, the lady at the stand next door selling huckleberry and cherries was super friendly and nice, I asked her a couple questions and she was nice enough to answer all of it with a smile. This place is a gem!!! Just shy of 22 miles from Canada it's historic and brings you back in time yummy snacks !!! I got huckleberry bear claw and another pastry it was delicious!!! I also got a veggie sandwich which was soooo good after having camping food for a couple days I missed my veggies lol my favorite thing was that they offered oat milk with coffee!!!! This place has been open since 1914 so you are surely visiting a diamond in the rough in Montana. The bread and bear claws are a must if you are in West Glacier. Expect lots of gravel roads to get there...but it's well worth the journey. The merchandise is a bit pricy, however the bakery items are well worth it. A loaf of Garlic Parmesan bread is just under $7 and the Huckleberry bear claws (which they are famous for) is $5. read more

Heard so much about the huckleberry bear claws that I had to make the trip up from Kalispell. Long drive because much of it was dirt road. Purchased my bear claw and proceeded to Bowman Lake to take in the view as I consumed it. The claw part was delicious but unfortunately it was the only part that had any huckleberry/cream cheese filling. 3/4 of it was just plain dough (NO filling) so I ended up throwing most of it away. That hurt for $6. The pics I have seen of them had the filling all the way through but it was later in the day so I think I got a reject. Hoping you have better luck! read more

Hate to say it but that bear huckleberry claw was awful...spongy...wheat montana claws are much better and layered... To a positive note the macaroons were a treat ....the employee seemed very incapible of his job...I'm not one to review bad but it was bad service and product....the restraunt next door was great though. I will start this review by saying I have celiacs. I DID NOT expect to find ANY pastries I could eat here. That's not the reason for the 1 start. We visited on 8/18 around 11AM and they had sandwiches filled with lunch meat. I asked an associate if they could wrap up some lunch meat in lettuce and his response was "we are too busy." I have NEVER gotten that from ANY restaurant. Not even ones in busy airports. I even had a fast food joint accommodate me once! And they don't get any bonus points. People are ALWAYS very understanding that I don't want to make myself SICK. Part of Polebridge Mercantile's visitors are going to be hungry backpackers like me. I was disappointed that such a homey place would have such bad customer service. So I got some hot water and had my GF oatmeal. Saved some money I guess. read more

drove trough the dusty wash board of rocks and dirt to taste the legendary mercantile pastry. what i found is sloppy, sugary, oversized pastry, shelves filled with huckleberry products containing corn syrup and others "poisons". i can only imagine the kind of fat used in their confections. the most presentable item is the huckleberry macaroon. but even that, the taste is 95% coconut and only the color hints at the berry. the valley and the river are gorgeous and worth a trip....just bring your own desert read more

Stayed in Polebridge for a couple of days as my boyfriend and I made our way into the backcountry of Glacier National Park for a 6 day long backpacking trip. Stopped at the Mercantile before and after our trip. We tried their Huckleberry Bear Claws (a must), their Pizza, Spinach & Artichoke Rolls, Pizza Rolls, Espresso and picked up some locally brewed beers. This place is hands down the most quality oriented place in Polebridge for food. They also have a small gift selection, stickers, postcards and other goodies that you can browse through. They make their pastries daily and the pizzas are made to order so everything is very fresh and you can taste the quality in their baking. Didn't get one thing here that disappointed us. They also have cold sandwiches, drinks, and other to-go toiletries that you might need on the go or in case you forgot something at home while visiting. I felt very safe eating the food here because I knew I could trust it and it wouldn't make me sick (plus it's dangerously delicious!) I recommend this place to anyone stopping in Polebridge 100%! read more

I stopped in here on my way to Bowman Lake. I tried the bear claws and they were good, although I ate it a little fast so didn't feel like i really got to enjoy it... If you're on your way up to Bowman Lake this place is a must stop, you can grab food and whatever else you may need. Well worth the drive out 2 polebridge. It is a lot of fun to have such an excellent Bakery in what feels like in the middle of nowhere. We have tried a lot of their fresh baked items. Of course the Huckleberry bear claw is a must-have but the savory scones are also worth trying. read more

We dropped in here two summers ago with friends who recommended it, as well as the Northern Lights Cafe next door. We were completely awestruck. We have incredible, award-winning bakeries in San Francisco and this is easily in the same league as some of our favorites. We understand it's now under new ownership, but apparently the original recipes went with it, the owners were going to assure the new owners were interested in maintaining the quality, and we expect it remains an excellent destination. We picked up muchies for that day as well as for breakfast the next. Everything they make, whether savory or sweet, is delicious. Add to that the utterly unique location, historic building, and local dogs and you have the makings of an unforgettable experience. We will absolutely come back here, no matter how long the drive, the next time we're in the area. Highly recommended, worth the trip. read more

Went here on a Friday night. It was a cool location and a nice stop off after driving on curvy gravel roads for a while. The live music was OK. The pizza took 1 1/2 hours but they told us it would be over an hour when we ordered. And it tasted pretty good. yummy food both at the merc and the next door saloon. Yes, there's a porta potty but if you go into the saloon, there's a flush toilet there. The huckleberry macaroons at the bakery were very yummy-even if they weren't piping hot out of the oven and I had a burger from the saloon which was also very yummy! You can drive up the very long dirt road from glacier park into Polebridge or, on our way back, took the other road-which was mostly paved and way faster (considering it was already getting dark before we left) that goes back towards the park. This place is amazing! Not only are the baked goods TO DIE FOR, but this place also sells camping supplies and does not even mark them up very much! Most places that are the last stop before a national park would gouge you, but this place doesn't. Only wish i could get their rolls in Los Angeles! read more
