My 4 yr old happy healthy frenchie was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. The animal hospital was shocked when pulling up his MRI images as we were expecting fluid in his ears, & I am beyond heartbroken & devastated. I am on day one of getting meds into him before he starts radiation, & I was at my wit's end with my stubborn bully-I tried everything-pill pockets, baked chicken, ham, yogurt, peanutbutter, cheese, broth...he wasn't having it. I had a few crumbles from an old package of chicken/cranberry soft chews that I bought from Polka Dog a year ago. My pup took his pills like a champ with these treats-they weren't even hidden as the treats are crumbly. In desperation, I called the store & explained the situation, hoping they would overnight me a package as I live an hr from their store & didn't want to leave my pup. They are delivering the treats to my door themselves tonight!!! I am in tears at their kindness. Sorry for my long review. Great place to find everything you want for your pup (I say want purposefully, clearly everything is targeted at people who will fork it over for their furry friends....um....me included). A ton of people have stopped to ask me where I got my pug's Puppia harness- while I did not get it here, I know that Polka Dog does have them in stock (downstairs). If you have a dog that's anywhere near as cute as mine, ...well you don't. Cuz mine's the cutest. Just kidding... but all puppies deserve to be as spoiled as my Dory, and Polka Dog Bakery is a pretty good place to do it. Getting to Polka Dog was an experience in itself because the South End is so dog friendly. There are lots of well-behaved, well-groomed dogs on expensive leashes attached to jewel-encrusted collars all over the South End, and walking into Polka Dog feels just as casual as walking into the neighborhood hardware store. I went to Polka Dog looking for a treat for my Dory on her birthday, but all I found was a happy birthday cookie. It was cute and decorated with purple and green "icing" (probably carob?) but the writing was messy and the cookie was rock-hard. I also filled a bag with their natural, fresh-baked dog cookies from behind the bakery counter, and all in interesting-sounding flavors such as PB&J and Tuna Schooner. The cookies, however, are more like crackers or flat rocks. I had to break them up for Dory to enjoy them, and ended up giving most of them to a bulldog at work who had no trouble chomping them down. So it looks like Polka Dog is not the place for Dory, unfortunately. But their selection of toys and supplies is great (we bought a Puppia harness). There are lots of different rawhide treats but we don't know much about those... too manly for my delicate Dory. Yes, Dory is a little princess. Don't hate! read more

i. love. this. place. my dogs love their treats, i love that they aren't full of fat and preservatives and god knows what, and we both love the long walk through the beautiful south end. usually i pray that no one else is shopping while i am however, because the customers make me want to stab myself in the face with whatever's handy. death by preserved bull penis to the eye? well alright then. [y'all know that's what bully sticks are right? just checking.] i just can't ever imagine dropping hundreds of dollars a day on my dog over teeny leather jackets and squeaky toys when there are animals out there that could use that money just to start living a healthy life. come here for all the treats along the counter, and don't bother with the rest of the store. anything non-edible you find in here you can get at petco or online for a quarter of the price and i'm not exaggerating. actually though, if you have felines, go downstairs and take a peek into that teeny room shaped like a triangle - they've got some killer catnip toys in there for cheap, compared to the dog stuff anyway. i bought my roommates' cats some toys from here and and two years later they're still kicking around albeit totally unrecognizable because they've been played with so much. anyway, the staff here are wonderful. they seem to know every dog that comes in, and they aren't stingy with the free samples handed under the counter! whenever i have a dog event, meetup, or i'm visiting family with pets for the holidays i stop in and get a huge bag of treats to give out in goodie bags, and people always want to know where i got them. they have something for even the pickiest of dogs. some of my dogs' favorites are the dried fish skin sticks, lamb lungs, chicken poppers, and the spiral bully sticks. carrying a wide variety of bully stick shapes [braided, round, spiral, etc.] is also really important to me because too often dogs are prone to choke on the ones found in your average pet store. aside from the treats i make myself at home, i almost never buy treats anywhere but polkadog, and it's worth it. read more

Very disappointed. We have been a regular customer at this store. We bought a squeaky dog toy that my dog tore apart in minutes. When we brought it back they told us "it's an easily destructible toy." No compensation or credit was offered. I asked for credit and the salesperson denied and said "we can agree to disagree." Clearly selling a toy that is identified as "easily destructible " speaks for a faulty product. I don't think I'll be going back. read more

Love this place. It can be a little expensive but they have quality treats and accessories. And the staff are lovely, too. I picked up a really cute camouflage harness (because that's how my little long haired Dachshund rolls) and a new retractable leash. Both were worth what I paid. And if I was one of those crazyfaces/people who think their dog needs a knitted sweater or fashionable slogan t-shirt and some booties, then I would spend hours in this place. I can totally see the appeal. I've yet to get any of their treats because my dog ignored everything I put in front of him, which wasn't surprising because he's kind of a snob and doing the model diet. But that's only because he has to go over to the dog park next door and pose and be stand-offish. However, I usually go with a friend and she swears by their treats. I can not say enough good things about this local gem! My girlfriend and I are the proud new parents of a French bulldog named Paulie Wallnuts and needless to say we have been going to Polka Dog Bakery for all of the essentials. I also walk numerous dogs in the South End so they also insist that we walk IN instead of past the store. The staff is not only knowledgable and friendly but kind and informative. Rachel in particular is a young lady who has helped us numerous times and not only does she remember us and our dog she remembers what he likes and what didn't go over so well. if you spoil your dog and have never visited polka dog, clearly you need your dog taken away. i'm calling the MSPCA. it was a sunny, albeit slushy saturday afternoon, so Lindy and i were out walking around the South End.. A quick walk down Tremont/right on Union Park/left on Shaumut, and you're there. The staff was extremely helpful. My asshole of a dog (but i love her so much) chewed through her harness (for the second time), so i needed to get her another one. one of the employees spent about ten minutes with Lindy and me, and she even fitted the harness for us. we bought some peanut butter treats as well. My dogs go absolutely apeshit for their peanut butter treats. The place was rather busy, as can get a little cramped. If your dog gets a little anxious in close proximity to other dogs, i wouldn't recommend going on a saturday afternoon. Now that we have two dogs, i probably won't venture in there alone, but i can't wait go back soon. Seriously. i love this place. read more

Mason loves going into Polka Dog. There is a large variety of doggie bakery items, although we pass by many of them because he is too little too have rawhide type treats, but we do get pupcakes pretty often. They also have, on the first floor, a selection of pre-packaged/non-homemade doggie food and treats, as well as a toy and leash selection. The downstairs section is totally full of toys and raincoats, etc. I think it's great for a special treat for your special furball. read more

I love this place. I'm new to the area, and I've only been in once. But my beagle loved it. I think the wide variety of things you can buy for your dog is so cool. You could get dried kangaroo, deer venison, lamb lung, fish, etc. I also can't buy my dog pigs ears for personal reasons, but I was delighted to find that this place carries cow and lamb ears! I got some lamb lung too while I was there, and even my cats love it! They go crazy when I give it to them. I am convinced this is doggy heaven. I love the natural products and the staff. The store is well-stocked and well-organized, and it's always a pleasure to bring my dog along for a little canine shopping excursion. The Polka Dog staff couldn't be nicer; last time I was there I burst into tears upon viewing their enormous jar of pig snouts (despite the fact that I was wearing a leather outfit and coon-skin cap at the time), and the girl behind the counter couldn't have been kinder or more supportive. I lived right around the corner from Polka Dog for a couple of years, and every time I walked my pooch down Shawmut, he would make a beeline for the Polka Dog door. He remembered the oasis of homemade treats, sleek dog duds and his favorite sherpa fleece lambies (plush lambs with squeaky bellies) and couldn't stay away. Frankly, I couldn't either... it was so easy to drop in and grab one of their signature rubber balls (a favorite for my pup) and some bullysticks. Now we're just a little further away and Polka Dog is no loner on our walk route, but we'll still make it our destination every other week or so. read more

My pickiest pom princess despises any treats i bought from petco, dog.com, petshops...She simply preferred her regular puppy food to treats, OMG, what a weirdog, till I found polka dog. She just couldn't stop begging me for these beef, chicken, liver polka treats. well, it's kinda on the pricey side. My bf got so amazed when he saw our princess begging for treats, and he asked:" how much are these?" I was like:"uhhh, $38." He "freaked out": " Geez, the treats I bought for myself yesterday at target was not nearly expensive." But if that pleases my princess, whats the matter. I used to make the trek out to Belmont to the Belmont Pet Shop - which is still great, like a supermarket for pets, but I have come to really like the people who work at the Polka Dog While I find the selection is a little limited, the people who work there make up for it with their knowledge and personal interest in what you are in there for - I'll drop in sometimes just to see what they have that's new. I have purchased toys and treats for my pet there but went in for dog collar recently for a real problem barker... they were out and the two girls there told me about one that could be found on Amazon - a citronella one that has helped with our little barker immensely. Problem solved - they didn't have to tell me about it and could have said "check back later" but that kind of helpful attitude will keep me and my dollars coming bac - Thanks Polka Dog.. and the neighbors thank you. read more

Carnivore heaven! I was like, Mannn...I love rabbit jerky...ooohh, they have deer jerky too?!! I asked the lady if some of the stuff was edible for humans and she kind of ignored that question and rung my friend up. He brought his huge 100 lb. doberman in here and walked out with a bag full of bones, hides, and treats. The cinnamon ones smelled really good..ok, I need to stop. My sister and I went there earlier today to get some treats for our pooches. Friendly staff, cute place and definitely love their assortment of treats for any size dog. The treats were such a hit, our canine companions definitely love the selection of PB&J cookies, Kung Pug and Queso treats. The treats were sensibly priced, $0.60/oz is not bad at all, especially you can get an assortment of different cookies. They also have dog cupcakes. Definitely, would be back again! read more
