Maybe it was because this was my first meal after a week in the High Uintas, but that chicken skin is about as good as it gets. Don't mess around, get the half chicken. Came with four tortillas, that's always good. The rice and beans that came with the chicken were very good. Top it all off with all the salsa you want, what a great meal. Pretty impressed with the chicken here at this location. The main thing to know is the salsa refrigerator opens from the far right side which is the exact opposite of the side you will pull on first. I tried a few versions of the non-hot salsa and all were good and needed if you decide to make a burrito with the tortillas. If not, then you really don't need much on the chicken - it is crispy and well seasoned. I got the one breast meal for about 8 bucks and the rice and beans were ok, but the chicken was the highlight of the meal. Didn't expect much from this storefront place, but was very surprised at how good this place is. First - you have to know that there is a very small, limited menu. And the interior is very plain. OK, now you have heard all the negatives I have. While the interior is plain, it is clean and you have nice big windows to keep it bright. And, the menu is limited to what they expertly make. I had the quarter chicken - dark meat. They say they marinate it overnight and grill it. The marinade made the chicken savory (not spicy) and it was cooked to the point that the meat was juicy and the skin was crispy. I usually don't eat chicken skin, but this was exceptional and I ate everything but the bones. The pintos were nicely cooked and the rice was well flavored. Both were enhanced by the salsas (more about those later). I had a choice of corn or flour tortillas. I chose flour since my husband was having tacos and therefore we'd get to taste the corn ones. The tortillas are not made in house, but were excellent - and they gave me 4! That made a very big meal for $7.00!! So the tacos - Kent got a chicken and an el pastor. The chicken was fine - though it was more like pulled chicken breast. Perfectly good, but not a patch on the pastor. In the pastor, you could taste the pineapple marinade. Both tacos were absolutely overflowing with meat and enclosed in 2 tortillas each. Topped with onion and cilantro - by request only (so if you don't like those things - no prob). Seriously could have made 4 tacos out of it. There was a grilled jalapeno and a grilled scallion on each plate and boy were they yummy. Note - I have been grumpy about a lot of local tacos because so often they don't hold up. I pick them up to get a bite and the bottom falls out. Over steamed? Bad tortillas? I don't know, but I know I get crabby when that happens. Not here. Tacos passed my test and I am a BIG fan! I had a tamarind soda - yum. The salsas - a mild red, a hot green, a hot pico-ish (lots of chopped onion and lots of hot) and some kind of diablo sauce (which I didn't try). The salsas were very distinctly different. They were in little covered cups in a refrigerator on the counter near the cash register. You were encouraged to take what you want. Love that! And for the germaphobes amongst you - they are all pre-packaged. The rest of the menu is small. They also offered carne asada and lengua tacos (next time!). Chicken or cheese enchiladas and quesadillas (on the kids menu), pretty much rounds out the menu. So, I have a quandary. The tacos were amongst a few that I really liked in town. BUT, the chicken is so delicious and so different than any other chicken around ... what to get next time?? I guess everything! read more

Three years have passed since they opened and now they have added $2.00 tacos to their simple menu, but nothing else has changed. The extremely bare bones "decor" remains, they still serve the food on disposable plates with flimsy plastic utensils, and you still have to ask for water, which is served without ice. Charming. The 1/4 chicken really won't fill you up, so go for the half, or add a taco or two if you're really hungry. The chicken really is quite tasty, and the prices are very reasonable. read more

This place is good enough to merit altering your travel route to make sure it includes a stop in Grand Junction. I can't imagine going back to Grand Junction and being tempted to eat anything else. The menu clearly indicates what to eat: chicken. And you'll want to do just that (although the tacos are also nothing to sniff at). The chicken, served with excellent tortillas, tasty beans, rice, grilled jalapeno and green onion along with a selection of top notch salsas, is nothing short of phenomenal. I'm not sure who goes out for a $10 meal and is concerned about the decor, but this place is adequate by any standards. Pollo Azado (correct spelling) is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time. Other reviewers may look askance at the spartan decor and limited menu, but I don't. I prefer a restaurant to focus on food (in this case, at an insane price). I also appreciate when a restaurant makes obvious its strengths. It's not rocket science, but it's close to it, to produce a chicken that's charred but still juicy, and flavorful but not at all greasy. I'm assuming the chicken is brined in some sort of citrus marinade, but the kitchen avoids the common tendency to oversalt. The dark meat was better because the breast meat got a few degrees too high, but this is a very minor complaint. If this isn't the greatest roast chicken I've had, it's close. No qualifiers. No "best in western Colorado." I'd put this up against Denver or Chicago or New York or Los Angeles. I'd put it on a table with a fancy tablecloth in a Rick Bayless venture and charge you three times what it costs here, and you'd eat it, love it, and not think twice about the bill. The homemade salsas are incredible. The best is a fiery roasted onion one that's sour enough to be really damn interesting, but not so sour as just to be a novelty. With corn tortillas and a salutary side of rice and beans (actually cooked properly, as opposed to into oblivion), it's a hell of a meal. I also sampled the tacos, which you might want to do. Nothing going on compared to the chicken, but a bit of variety, at least, on the lengua and asada end. And certainly not offensive. Once again, Pollo Azado is an absolute must if you're in or around GJ. Given the food landscape in the immediate area, I'd think you were doing something grievously wrong if you were in the area for more than 6 hours and didn't drop by PA. read more

Wanted fast food tacos and this place was 5 minutes from my hotel. I get 2 chicken tacos with rice and beans. The salsas they provide all taste bland and are not hot and frankly doesn't have a fresh taste to them. The tortillas they use are very tasty but are flimsy and hard to maneuver in ur hand without ripping completely apart. Seriously - I LOVE this little place!!! There is about only one thing to get here: fabulous, juicy flavorful asado style chicken (1/4, 1/2 or whole). The chicken is a great value. The whole chicken meal costs about $20 and lasts my husband and I a couple of days! It comes with awesome beans, rice and flour or corn tortillas. You get grilled leeks and jalapenos with the chicken and you are welcome to take as much homemade salsa as you like. They make a great mild onion relish, a medium red sauce and tomatillo sauce, and one SUPER awesome, SUPER hot secret sauce. They also have enchiladas and a couple of other things on their menu - I've never strayed from the chicken to try them though. I have had the menudo that they make on the weekends. If you like menudo, you'll like theirs! The decor is charmingly simple. Clean tables, drinks in the cooler, some photos by a local artist on the wall. You can dine in or take out. I've done both and I like both options. (They are a great place to sit and eat while your clothes are washing at the nearby laudrymat) The staff is always great. In the 15-20 times I've eaten here I've never had a bad experience. Please support these guys. I hope this authentic and affordable restaurant stays around for a long time! read more

I agree with other reviewers on the decor. It is bare and sparse but it is very clean. Not wasting a lot on decor allows them to provide a delicious low cost menu. With a consistent product. They are keeping it simple and fresh as well as affordable. Sometimes hard to do in this economy. You can get their whole chicken meal and feed a family of 4 easily with the sides for like 19 bucks. Way better food and better for you than KFC...not to mention cheaper than KFC. The Food: I had the chicken with rice and beans plus jalapenos and tortillas and lots of their fresh salsa. It was delicious. Simple and flavorful! My husband had the asada tacos which were also delicious. They were only $2 a piece and you get plenty of meat. He loved them and their spicy hot sauce..This place reminds me of El Pollo Loco in San Diego, CA....which is a really good thing. This place doesn't look like much, but the food packs a flavor punch! Simple menu, simple ingredients, and simple service, but spectacular flavors! I really respect a restaurant that commits to a small menu because they can do it all well. As everyone knows, the chicken is the star here. My husband got the chicken and I got a couple tacos. My only gripe is that even though I got 2 tacos and rice and beans, it wasn't quite enough to fill me up. Not sure if I was particularly hungry, but I'll get a third taco for sure next time. The place is very bare and when I asked at the counter what they would recommend, the girl just replied: "I don't know, it's all good". Not very helpful, but I went with the $2 tacos (chicken and beef). Very simple, clean, and just the right amount of heat. I was very satisfied! The food was delivered within 5 min. and eaten in the same amount of time. :) When I left the owner came out and asked me if I enjoyed it, I just smiled and said yes and that it was nice of him to ask. Really disappointed. Looking for a locally operated Mexican restaurant and reviews on Yelp were enough for us to try this place. We wanted take out food for our starving kids in the hotel room. All the kids really wanted were quesadillas. Menu was limited to Roasted Chicken, tacos, enchiladas or quesadillas. Not a big deal because all we wanted were tacos and quesadillas. (Kids really wanted quesadillas) So we ordered 2 kids quesadillas meals, 3 steak tacos, and decided to try the enchilada meal with rice and beans. Then everything went down hill. We had to confirm the order 3 times with her. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we walked in, then there were a 3 small groups that came in after we ordered. We started to wonder if they forgot to send the order to the kitchen when people who ordered after us began to receive their food. I asked the woman at the front if she placed our order, she said the enchiladas take more time, but when I pointed out to her that our ticket was still in her ledger, she apologized. I then had to confirm our order for a 4th time when she rang it up and said it was 44$ (it was actually only 18$). We finally got our food and were trying to hurry back to the hotel to our starving kids (they were texting us wondering if we got lost ). We opened it up see this great local Mexican food . .......... and realized that they screwed up the order and gave us enchiladas instead of quesadillas. Instead of driving back to the place to fix the order we decided to pick up quesadillas at Taco Bell for the kids. Maybe we should have got the chicken.
