Went to the location on Hwy 529 and Fry rd Katy. Going to start with entering the location it was very clean. staff was friendly and helpful. we had was very short wait time. Took my order to go and the food smelled delish. I had been wanting to try this place and looked forward to trying their charro beans. I got the Regio platter which included carne Asada rice charro beans tortillas and salsa. also got half of their grilled chicken which also came with rice and charro beans. The chicken had an over powering seasoning I couldn't put my finger on the taste. The rice lacked taste and the beans were underwhelming. Why did the Monterrey chicken cross the Southern border? To get away from the Mexican cooks. Now cooks are on both sides of the border. Maybe that is why the chicken in the logo is wearing a cowboy hat, trying a disguise. El Pollo Regio boasts "pollos asados al carbon" (open flame-grilled chicken) as its specialty. The chicken is "marinated with a unique blend of herbs, spices and citrus juices" cooked on the grill. Sounds good and healthy, no? Let's just say the chickens better have good running shoes. This is a comida rápida chain (fast food), new to Houston, but has locations in Dallas area, etc. They have a drive-thru (with a squawk box telling you how many buck-buck-bucks, of course). Menu has pictures on the board, which are helpful, but the puddled font makes me squint - shall we say - like a chicken looking for a sesame seed. Quite a variety of Mexican food is offered. In fact, just chicken seems to be hard to find on it (maybe they were wearing cowboy hats). Also, everything seems to be for a full meal - no a la carte or half portion option. For fast food, prices seem as steep as the banks of the Rio Grande Gorge. My order: Half chicken, $7 Lunch special Friend order: Beef Torta, $7 Chicken: The seasoned flavor is very tasty. The heat-spiciness is more on the mild side, but more than rotisserie places. That is why they give red salsa and the yellow-green hot sauce, which is liquidy, mild-medium hot. It was fairly good, but not great. But if you like it, they sell bottles. I asked for a slice of lime, too, but the chicken did not need it. On the down side, portions of the chicken were a bit dry. Chicken is served with tortillas, Mexican rice, excellent borracho beans & half of a grilled onion. Grease from the skin and the coating of spice means your fingers get messy. So, why don't they give you more napkins for to-go orders? For this menu item, I recommend dining in, and not trying to eat bone-in chicken dripping with green sauce while you're driving on I-45 (not that I tried that, of course; besides, green sauce on the fingers would make texting even harder while driving). Torta: Looks huge, but inside, there is not enough beef. Some guacamole is evident. Bread bun was soft, plentiful and toasted. The spoonful of beef given to me by friend was good-tasting and tender though. For drinks, there is the usual assortment of soft drinks, including the Jarritos flavors. To you cheapskates: They do not give you a free glass of water in the drive-thru lane. Interior is modern sterile (easy to clean, and uncomfortable furniture). Fast food joints want fast customers. It also has the proverbial hanging TVs. Rating: I wouldn't mind eating here once a month. In its category it's a 4-star, but overall, it's a 3. They have a variety of tacos, burritos, etc. but the highlight for me is the more than you could reasonably expect lunch special. Al carbon style (cooked over open flame) half chicken cut into pieces (breast, thigh, leg, wing) with half of a small onion. You get with this 4 tortillas, Mexican rice, and some charro beans that are out of this world. Oh, and your drink is included. For $7! Unreal. Salsa bar has a variety from mild red, to spicy green, to creamy habanero, and a couple of others. I love the green sauce. Service is always friendly and fast... and word has grown; I used to see 1 or 2 people in this spot every time I'd go eat here, but the last few times there's at least a dozen regardless of the time of day. Ok I have been driving by this place for over a year or so, and every time I pass by I smell the grill and it smell wonderful. And every time I say I need to go I there and try it. So today was one of those days. I saw that they had 2 chickens for 23.00 with 2 sides which are beans and rice and salsa.. I went with the 2 chick's and the sides because 1 chicken was 15.00 so more the marrier. I got home cracked open that bag and oh my gosh, the food was awesome. As fast food chicken goes this place isn't too shabby. If you are at the counter, you can see back there where they are grilling what appears to be a hen house of yard birds. A great aroma is pouring out that kitchen. For about $15, you can walk out with a whole chicken, beans, rice, salsa, and some hot corn tortillas. It's hard to argue with that deal. Found their chicken to be a little over cooked. Chicken is pretty rough to get perfect. At 160 degrees the USDA will shut you down. At 165 your perfect, and at 170 you have dry breast meat. Pretty hard feat to pull off on a grill at this scale, but they need to improve the temperature of the chicken for juiciness. The chicken was well seasoned and besides a tad dry it is was good. The salsa bar inside offers several different varieties. They have some wonderful marinated red onions with habanero slices that can provide all the heat you can deal with. Beans were very nice swimming in a bacon infused broth. Corn tortillas were hot and soft. Grabbed an order of their pastor taquitos. 5 of them, for under $6 seemed like a good deal. Thought the pork was tender and seasoned right. There was fresh cilantro, limes, and onion to make your taco yours. I was in there for less than 10 minutes and took home to watch the game. read more

I really like the restaurant staff is very friendly and they got my food out within a decent time. I order a torta but I should have got the whole chicken that way I could have got a real feel for the food and also I could have made sure it wasn't dry. El Pollo Regio is a small counter service place and for what it is, I thought it rocked. I got the everyday lunch special for $6.99 which was a half chicken, tortillas, rice and beans. My partner in crime got the shredded chicken tostada. Both were great. Chicken was flavorful and moist. Corn tortillas were warm and soft and beans and rice were seasoned well.
