After hiking 5 miles in the Redwoods, four of us headed to Pomella for a late afternoon lunch on Saturday. We were pretty hungry and happy that there was ample outdoor seating. Pomella is Israeli cuisine, which is a mix of Levantine, Maghrebi, North African, Mediterranean, Eastern European & Middle Eastern. I had been a fan of the owner's previous Ba-Bite. We ordered two salads: the Beet Composed (Romaine lettuce, French sheep's milk Feta, beets, yams, walnuts, cilantro, red onion, olive oil, and their Ras El Hanout spice blend) and the Roasted Celeriac & Lentil Composed (Beluga lentil, slow-roasted celeriac, HAZELNUTS, mint, spinach, goat cheese). The fried cauliflower, tossed in tahini, sumac, cumin and lemon juice was the one dish that there was not enough for the four of us - we should have ordered two servings because it was that good. For three of us who eat some animal meat, we raved over the lamb wrap: a homemade lafa flatbread stuffed with hummus, cabbage salad, shirazi salad, green lemon sauce (not spicy) and lamb kefta. We should've asked them to cut the wrap into three pieces for us, because it's hard to do it after the fact. Then we had a Butternut Squash & Quinoa Salad, the pickled vegetables (a mix of Persian cucumber, cauliflower, carrots, celery, beets, turnips, red bell pepper), house made pita, 4 pieces of falafel, and hummus. The pita bread is HUGE and the hummus is really nice. We loved the falafel. Everything was absolutely delicious. The service was good, and the seating was great. It's really helpful that they're right next to a parking lot. Although, the lot gets pretty full. I will be coming here often. read more

We ordered delivery today, I had been to ba-bite and wanted to try pomelo. I love that it's healthy take out! We had a cauliflower spinach salad with Manchego. Very good, huge and lots of spinach. I added shrimp - it was easily shareable as a main. We also got a lamb kofta side (2 pieces) and a small sun-choke and lentil salad. The lamb kofta was ok, the sun-choke lentil was well balanced and delicious. Lamb could have been cooked longer and lower, it was a bit harder on the outside than in. A very tasty dish! I ordered the rice plate with shrimp. The plate was rich in flavors and had a great kick. It came with grilled vegetables and a tahini sauce. I would highly recommend purchasing a side of the spicy sauce as well. The restaurant was clean and has lots of seating. The staff was friendly and offered great suggestions! read more

We used Pomella to cater a graduation party. They were outstanding in every way. It was so easy to work them, they were reliable, delivering the food right on time. More importantly the food was outstanding. The salads were absolutely divine as were the grilled veggies,lamb, chicken and felafel and sangria! Pomella is the absolute best! The food is delicious -- so many tasty, interesting, and healthy options. Super vegetarian- and vegan-friendly, with delicious meat options too. My vegan daughter is hooked on the majadra with cauliflower, subbing vegan tahini for the usual sauce; my favorite is the arugula-butternut squash salad with lamb as an added protein. And the goat-cheese-stuffed falafel is soooo good. The staff is nice, friendly, and helpful. We appreciate both the indoor and outdoor seating options, too. The food is great and one of my go to's for a quick, filling, and tasty take out. Their tagines are delicious - both the chicken and veggie, and they have a gluten-free option. The space is limited in indoor seating, but the outdoor seating is quite nice. It's more about the food than the atmosphere or service. Their style is Mediterreanean/Middle Eastern/Israeli - they have a few seasonal salads and soups on rotation with in-season produce which are always a hit. read more

My first time here and I loved it. They have a lovely outdoor and indoor eating area. The service was fast and friendly too. The food is amazing. I loved every thing that we ordered. We had the Beluga lentil, zucchini and hazelnut salad. We also had the stuffed grape leaves, hummus plate and pickled vegetables. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! We ordered the chicken shishlick, falafel hummus plate, cheese stuffed falafel, grilled salmon, side of cauliflower salad, and lemonade. The chicken shishlick was basically a bowl of rice. It was okay, was hoping it'd be more savory. My husband ordered the falafel hummus plate and he said the falafel tasted store bought - which I thought was a bit harsh, but he is Israeli and is literally from the land where falafel comes from. I really liked the falafel, especially the cheese stuffed falafel. If I ever went back it'd probably be just for the cheese stuffed falafel and the cauliflower salad. I found out about this place on instagram, and was excited about it. The owner loves to showcase her employees on there and really shows up on social media as a community integrated restaurant, and for that reason I thought the staff would be a tad warmer. We wanted to dine inside since it was 50 degrees out, and when I asked if the door could be closed, one of the staff just gave me a blank stare. Another staff member then told me they couldn't close it and suggested we sit under the heat lamps outside. Needless to say, sitting on metal furniture outside during winter doesn't make for a cozy experience. To be honest, we kind of wished we had gone to Doña next door instead b/c their indoor seating looked alot more comfortable. What a fun meal we had! It was casual yet lovely and delicious. It was definitely fabulous! Last Saturday was the perfect weather to dine outdoors in Oakland. Food were served in to go containers that you take to their pretty outdoor space. It was like having a picnic. Everything was yummy that we placed a second order. We had: *Vegetable tagine with couscous for me *Lamb kefta with rice and vegetables for him (No picture. He ate it right away.) *Cheese-stuffed #falafel *Hummus and more falafel with pita *Fried brussel sprouts *Fried cauliflower The different sauces that came with our orders were so good that I took them home to be enjoyed again. Takeout for six of us was delicious and healthy. The falafel and cheese falafel (with a little feta inside) were crisp and flavorful. Although the chicken thighs and couscous were delicious and hearty, the sauce in the Chicken Tangine needs to be reduced to make it less watery and boost the flavor). The salads were tasty, esp. the beet and the cauliflower salads. Service for takeout was friendly. She checked everything again to make sure our order was complete. I rarely leave reviews & generally try to leave positive ones when I go out, as I work in the food service industry myself. I ordered carry out on a Monday night, and did not have a good experience. Food was super mid, but way overpriced for what it is.... Walked out with a $70 bill for a wrap & small box of hummus, and 5 pieces of cauliflower basically. I paid $25 for the hummus plate, it was literally 4 pieces of chicken on top of some hummus with 2 tiny pieces of pita and they forgot the side of pickled veggies... I was genuinely so shocked I called them back & asked if I ordered the appetizer instead of the plate (unfortunately not the case, and they did not offer any solution, even said I could buy an extra side of chicken if I wanted). Also got the cauliflower mezze, it was fine, but overpriced for like 5 florets of cauliflower.... See the photo if you wanna see what we're working with here. The food itself was just okay, and there are much better spots in Oakland to get Mediterranean food for 1/2 the price. I would skip it next time and pop over to doña instead. I was really looking forward to having lunch there because I love this type of food. The place was cheerful with a pleasant outdoor area. I ordered the vegetable tagine because I had had this dish before when it was prepared by a North African friend and it was delicious. The dish I was served at Pomella was barely edible. It consisted of a large quantity of very dry couscous with some dry garbanzo beans, butternut squash and a few other ingredients. There was no sauce and overall the dish was very dry and bland. There were far too many couscous as compared to the other ingredients. I left feeling very dissatisfied and disappointed. read more

My falafel wrap was really good, the lamb rice plate, my husband thought it was okay. There was something that got to me though... I came with my 8 month little twins and saw there was mango in the salad, so I asked if I could BUY a couple slices to feed them. The guy taking the order said sorry they are premixed in. As we were eating, one of the workers came out with a whole mango just munching at it. Like come on I wasn't even asking for the mango for free, would have paid like $5 for them. In love with this new spot. After weeks of watching their emails in my inbox I finally decided to give in and go on inauguration day after seeing the cute little red white and blue cakes on their menu. I ordered a few and then delivered them to a few friends but wish I had ordered more for myself as they were so good!! I also picked up some lunch and few sides for early dinner ;) The butternut squash composed salad was huge. The main highlight was that pomegranate dressing though. I added shrimp but probably will not do this next time as it is not necessary and the shrimp addition is pretty pricey. I wouldn't say it is the best mediterranean food in Oakland but it is good and the dessert and menu variety makes this place. Lots of vegan options and pickup was so easy with a parking lot in front. Pomella is a bright Israeli cafe with a pleasant outdoor patio and a casual indoor seating area too. Much of the menu here is centered around mezzes including salatim made with fresh produce. One composed salad was made with beets ras el hanout, yam, red onion, and walnuts, served over chopped romaine lettuce along with crumbled feta and a red wine vinaigrette. Another was made with red cabbage, dried Mission figs, and bean sprouts served over arugula along with feta and a vinaigrette. My favorite salad was the yellow saffron roasted cauliflower mixed with green olives, raisins, and cherry tomatoes, served over baby spinach and served with manchego cheese and a citrus vinaigrette. From the hot mezze menu, I tried the Lamb Kefta, two ground meat kebabs mixed with spices and herbs and topped with a creamy yogurt-tahini sauce. But my favorite dish of all was the hummus plate topped with two cheese-stuffed falafels! The hummus was smooth and creamy, but the most unique component was the huge falafel fritters, which had a filling made of feta cheese--what a clever idea! The hummus and falafels went nicely with the pita bread and the homemade spicy sauces: an herbaceous green zhoug and a spicy red harissa. Overall, the food here was fresh, vibrant, and delicious, and though the prices were definitely on the high side, the quality of ingredients was worth the cost. read more

This place was amazing - some of the best food I've had in awhile! (Especially since I've mostly been cooking at home...) I was randomly scrolling through yelp for food options because our power was out for 2 days and once I saw Pomella my craving for Middle Eastern food wouldn't go away. We called in our order for pickup and once we got it the food smelled so good that we ended up just eating in the car. There was a little mixup with our order but it was an easy fix and the employees were very nice about it! List of what we got: - Hummus Plate with Falafels $14 - Saffron Rice Plate with Lamb $14 + $3 extra - Pomegranate Tabbouleh $5.50 - Extra Pita $2 This ended up being too much food for 2 people and we had leftovers for the next day. Hummus tasted really fresh and was just right. Saffron Rice Plate had so many flavors and a nice serving of grilled veggies - yogurt sauce was great too! Pomegranate Tabbouleh was the perfect cold side and the pomegranate added a nice fruity crunch (I ate most of it for lunch the next day). It makes me sad to write this review, as pomella has been high on my list for places to get a good, fulfilling salad since they opened. However, after several lackluster experiences, I wanted to share feedback regarding portion size. I ordered via caviar, as that was the only option for me to get a meal from pomella today and was expected a higher price to make up for delivery app fees. The Cabbage and Dried Fig Salad was $16.25. I opted to add salmon for $9.39, bringing the total for a salad with protein to $25.64. when the salad arrived, the salmon was lukewarm (it is usually warm, as I live .3 mi from there), a significant amount of the arugula was yellowed, and the salmon portion was...laughable...for the amount I was charged. Admittedly, I was so annoyed that I weighed it - thinnest 2.4 ounces of salmon. Again, I recognize that it's ridiculous to order a salad on an app, but it was my only option and I accepted that I would be paying more. But, pomella should consider reflecting on the quality and portion of the foods that they are sending out, especially when charging what they charge. i hope i can come back to pomella in the future if their quality and portions improve. read more

When Ba-Bite closed, I was crestfallen. I loved Ba-Bite. I ate many post-yoga lunches there, lingering with friends. I brought take out from Ba-Bite to my birth class when I was pregnant and ate it in between holding ice in my hands (this exercise was meant to prepare us for the experience of birth and by my approximation it fell seriously short but alas). I raved about the majadera to near strangers. I could go on, but just trust that I really loved Ba-Bite. When one of my yogi pals texted me the news of Ba-Bite being reincarnated as Pomella, I was beyond happy and placed an order on the day they started taking them. They ran out of food that first night and called me to move my order to the following day. I was sad about my dinner, but happy that they were in high demand. When I arrived the next day, Pomella was everything I hoped for. The hummus is as creamy and craveable as I remember it; the lamb juicy and succulent as ever. From the friendly greeting as soon as we entered, to the halva for desert, we had a great experience at Pomella. We ordered many dishes and share plates, so everyone could taste each dish. Each menu item had its own wonderful flavor. The eggplant was a particular standout - and the chicken added to our hummus. Each member of our family has different dietary restrictions and tolerance for heat. We loved that everyone could modify things and have exactly what they wanted - for the savory dishes. Halvah is the only dairy-free/vegan desert and it was great. There are indoor and outdoor seating areas. Yum!! Thank you Pomella for making Passover complete and for the easy & sanitary shelter-in-place pickup experience! I ordered and paid online - I got the saffron rice & eggplant (with vegan tahini - and i never would have known it was vegan, so good!), a chocolate-covered coconut macaroon, charoset, and horseradish. everything was delicious and felt so healthy and fresh. The food was ready exactly on time and I didn't even have to get out of my car to pick it up. Compostable takeway containers were a big plus, too. When Ba Bite shut down, it was a sad hit to the local community. Predicted strictly on conjecture: I believe the landlord was over charging and Ba Bite baled. From the ashes of the former comes Pomella!! First, everything is made from scratch and prices are fair, easily outdoing surrounding businesses. My fiancé and I have been considering having them cater our wedding at the ends of the year. We've been talking about this place (re)opening since December!! For whatever reason, choosing a salad at most restaurants risks a terrible combination of it being boring while still overcharging and underdelivering. Not the case here at all. Ordered take-out during their soft opening in the middle of this viral-apocalypse. Super easy: order and pick a time slot. Then the food was ready when we arrived. Each entrée came with recommended heating instructions (the hummus said: "instructions: eat." Hahaha Roasted butternut squash, slices, lentils, a generous potion of arugula. I ate the salad as quickly as I got home. It was generous in size and equally flavorful. Also ordered their homemade hummus. Every bite we took we made some kind of "mmmm!!" sound. Creamy, thick, spiced perfectly, and with pita bread. Also ordered the Mujadara: ok sized portion of lentils and rice, caramelized onions, herbs and spices. Came with a generous side of It's a delicious tahini. Eggplant was spiced and cooked to perfection. OMG- so delicious and healthy and just wonderfully flavorful and expertly prepared; fresh mint lemonade, hummus w eggplant and pita, chicken wraps, savory saffron shrimp, Mocha cream layer cake, Chocolate Mousse w fresh Whipped Cream. Food was okay, actually kind of surprised for how average given all the fantastic reviews. Ordered the wrap with chicken, brussel sprouts, hummus, pita, and pickled veggies. Brussels sprouts probably the standout, but portion size very small. Pickled veggies, portion size too large counter intuitively. Wrap was 50% iceberg lettuce, which was really surprising. Very light on the protein (chicken). Hummus also a bit bland. Pita was fluffy and delicious. Recommendations? Add more tahini or maybe even a squeeze of lemon to the hummus (or salt? garlic?)...seems like this is a consistent theme in many reviews. Cut down on the lettuce in the wrap (if you know it gets soggy shortly after serving then why not address that instead of just saying 'eat it immediately' on the menu? crumbled falafel would help soak up the juices nicely). Increase brussels portion size and cook 2-3 minutes longer. Consider including pita with the hummus order? $2 per pita seems a bit much. read more

Wasn't as in love with the chicken wrap as I had hoped. It was immediately soggy and had more of a hummus flavor profile than a yogurt profile as suggested by the menu description. That said, the portion was large and the chicken itself was tasty and cooked well. I really enjoyed the cold cauliflower salad which was fresh and slightly sweet from some mystery fruit (raisin maybe). The falafel with feta in the middle was just okay. The cheese inside was good but the falafel itself was overcooked and a bit dry. The outdoor dining space for Pomella sadly only covers about half of the outdoor area for this restaurant and their next door neighbor Dona (which has way more seating and you can't sit in their area if not dining there). Mask use by employees and patrons alike was limited, despite signage, but the fact that the interior has a large open wall to the outside and cathedral ceilings made dining-in indoors feel less like a game of Russian roulette. Service was friendly but it'd be nice to be able to order by number or QR code to reduce the time waiting for people to hear each other through their masks to input orders for dining in. read more
