Beans were nice and creamy, rice tasted box-like, a bit tough. Veggies were fine; tomatoes, zucchini, onions and peppers. It came with pico & cheese, sour cream was extra. We have loved the Court Street location for years and decided to try this one when we finally found it open (hours are evidently wrong across the internet). While the items we had -- one taco and one quesadilla -- were okay taste wise, we were disappointed to find they no longer use all white meat chicken, so we won't be back. Our server seemed less than thrilled to have us come in during the middle of the afternoon. Also, the place was a mess -- I don't think they've swept or cleaned the floor in any way in weeks and most of the tables were dirty as well. Sad to see a Syracuse legend fall this far. read more

Drove past this place a few times so thought I'd finally give it a shot. I would not recommend this place at all. First of all the place looked quite desolate when we walked in; it was very dark and some of the lights were out entirely. The food was also not worth it. I paid $6 for each steak taco only to be served shredded beef. It wasn't bad, but definitely not what I expect when I order steak. The tortillas were really good, and they were the only reason why I'm giving this 3 stars instead of 2. Also, the person making my food had very long hair that was not put up, so I didn't feel very good about the overall cleanliness of the establishment either. My second visit here and I couldn't wait to come back because first visit was so good. I heard that they had Taco De Birria on Tuesday's as a special and I had to try them. I got the mixed ones which had shrimp, shredded beef and pork filling. You got three of them in the corn tortillas with a spicy chili dipping sauce!!!! They were delicious!! I'm not really an expert on Birria but they tasted outstanding to me and I ate everything . They were not skimpy on the shrimp either because each one had 3-4 shrimp on each taco. Parking lot is on the side of the building, so there is easy access. Nice and roomy with many tables on the inside. Pretty vast menu of different things that can be ordered. Tried this place last night with a couple of friends and I will 100% be coming back! If you are in the mood for good tacos, burritos, etc., come here! The portions are MASSIVE for the price and everything was freshly made on the spot. I got the super burrito with chicken and that burrito was larger than my face. Incredible breakfast tacos!! This is everything I miss about Texas and the first place in NY I've had authentic tasting breakfast tacos!! I am ecstatic my father found this gem and shared it with me! Stopped in this west side joint for a spontaneous dinner. As it turned out they were having a special on birrias (a kind of taco). Never having had them, we got a trio of steak, and a trio of steak/shrimp. We also ordered a side of pinto beans and rice, and a side of papas fritas (potato chips). Lastly, we shared a red wine freeze. Seating was alright, but most people seemed to be getting takeout. The birrias came out first. Way spicier than we are used to, we could only manage to eat three and a half before our mouths were begging us to stop. The wine freeze helped, but we also asked for a few glasses of water. The beans and rice were somewhat spicy, but well cooked and tasty. The fritas were extra freshly cooked, but had a bit too much salt on them. We ate about 2/3 before we had to stop. All in all, we were pleased to see a steady flow of customers, but for us, things had too much heat. For those looking for fire, this is perfect for you! read more

The quickest way to describe Ponchitos is that it's the far superior local alternative to Chipotle and Moe's. Their fundamental menus are based around that same structure. Burritos so large you need two hands to pick them up. Tacos about the size you'd expect a burrito to be. Nachos, quesadillas, salads, etc. And if you do a quick look at their website, you might think that's it. The more we've ordered from here, the more and more options we came to realize they offer, but getting them all together in one place, especially online, is no easy task. I'd love to see that clarified, because I feel like a lot of people are truly missing out on a lot of great stuff. Breakfast tacos and burritos are a requirement. Just like their regular items, the sizes are ridiculous, especially for the cost. The first one I ordered was a burrito with ham, and it ended up being breakfast and lunch. The ham is cut thick, and unless you're into that, I think the other options for meat fit way better. The next time I did breakfast, I got a taco with bacon. It's one of my favorite things to get for breakfast in Syracuse. We were surprised to find they have wings. Among a separate list of other items, it's on what I think they called their Bar Menu, and those items are not always available. We ordered some to try, and wouldn't you know they were perfect. Great flavor, cooked perfectly. There's a hand full of items that, if we see on a menu we have to try as a rule. You can't win if you don't play. And aside from wings, that brings us to the Cuban Sandwich. Honestly, when we added that to an order, we pretty much just felt like we were crossing the item off our list so we could say we tried it. Just like with the wings, we came in with no expectations at all and got absolutely swept off our feet. Incredible. That same thick cut ham I thought wasn't right for the burrito - absolutely perfect for the sandwich. And it didn't even occur to me that they've already got some of the best slow cooked pork already on hand. I've tried any of the "must have" Cuban sandwiches that I've heard of in Syracuse, and these are at least on the top 3. Completely out of left field. I'll say it again: You can't win if you don't play! Birria Tuesdays! Every Tuesday they take down the bar menu and dedicate all their space to birria tacos. Steak and Shrimp, or just Steak. They were the first I've ever tried, and they are life changing. The way they're cooked on the grill and presented has a very authentic feel to it. It's not a ton of food for what you're paying, (and I think that's the only time I'd ever say that about this place), but one of their best items, and only available once a week. Lastly, our biggest take away from the place for us has been the Chicharons. It's the perfect thing to snack on or pair with a small meal. This kind of meat is really easy to mess up, and they get it perfect every time. They're seasoned with at least cumin, and always crispy. This was an entirely new food to us, so I'm not sure if there's a "correct" way to eat them, but sometimes we dip them in horseradish, bbq sauce, honey mustard, whatever we have on hand. I could go on about this place all day. I only mentioned the stuff you absolutely have to try here. If they closed down, Syracuse would be a noticeably sadder place because of it. read more

I came in and currently was on keto for the next week and a half and I explain to them that I'm pretty much doing a no carb diet. Then I made a simple request and got a price on it, I asked how much a bowl of steak and cheese would be. I'm talking like a side of steak with some shredded cheese on it. I've done this at tons of places like moes, fajita grill etc. The dude then tells me 12.50!?! I've been reiterated that this was not a burrito, but a small take-out bowl with meat and cheese and that's it and he reconfirmed 12.50. That is ridiculous! For perspective, you're typically going to pay 3-5 at most for that. Why am I giving 3 stars instead of 1? Because the decor...that's it. It's beautiful in there and they made the space amazing. But the price tag situation is not OK. I did not ask them to bend over backwards for a specialty diet, I just wanted some meat and some cheese...not hard. read more

I've driven past this place a million times and finally decided to check it out! I'm new to the CNY area and have been stressing about finding a good taqueria! This place is extremely generous with sizes and prices fair! I got a steak quesadilla that ended up being dinner for 2 nights. The steak was falling so tender it hardly felt like I was eating steaK! Phenomenal food and giant portions! This place is so good!!! The nachos weighed like 5 pounds seriously I could not believe how much chicken was in them. Had to stop in on Taco Tuesday for some Birria tacos. They only offer them on Tuesdays. They were quite good and freshly made. You can either choose steak or shrimp. The steak was perfectly cooked. The deck seating was Wayyyy too loud for us Sat night, as the traffic is heavy and annoying, My friend and I would have eaten inside at one of the attractive tables, but the overhead music was blaring!! Though I loved the music they were playing, the decibel level made it hard to order and impossible to have a conversation inside. Maybe that's why all the inside tables were empty and the deck was full. Because there is no table service ( which is fine with me), I would have preferred to eat at a picnic table overlooking Lipe Park. Hey, Guys, Be sure to leave a trash can and a rack for the trays and we'll even clear our tables! Food was great and fresh. Prices were reasonable and serving sizes were ample. The best quality here is the portions. Freaking huge. Their pork is wonderful and sometime I just stop in and grab a side order of it to go and make (gluten free) Cuban sandwiches at home. Pomchitos is a much much better version of Chipotle. The nachos are so that I'd recommend getting the toppings on the side or plan to share, otherwise the leftovers won't hold up well. I recommend a burrito, burrito bowl, or nachos as opposed to the tacos. read more

We love this place. I have yet to visit in person. We usually Grubhub or just do take out. We love the burrito box. What's a burrito box you say? It's a take out container filled with amazing. We either get carnitas or steak beans rice cheese and sour cream. One box is enough for three meals! The meat is so flavorful every ingredient compliments the other. The only draw back is the very expensive tortilla chips that actually do not taste very good on their own. I like to use them to scoop the burrito box. read more

Love this place! The staff is efficient and friendly. The portion sizes are large. The food is amazing! I had the carnitas quesadillas with a side of chips and salsa. Went to Ponchito's for the first time on Monday. Amazing overall. Atmosphere is an eclectic bar-sports bar-restaurant motif. A little confusing as to ordering at the counter, then paying at the bar, but food is brought to the table. Yet, asked and they politely explained their set up. I ordered the Cuban as I missed not having this since leaving Florida. A good sandwich. The meat was a perfect blend of typical Cuban sandwich meat with a healthy spread of mustard in it. The sandwich could've been pressed a little longer, but still served hot and delicious. The fries were probably the best I've had in this area. Wife ordered a burrito and fried plantains. While the tortilla was a little damp from how they soften it, she said it good and it was large. The plantains were their sweet version and were awesome! Not too sweet and served hot. I'll have to try the spicy version next time we go though. I highly recommend this restaurant for a change of pace if you want good Puerto Rican/Cuban/Hispanic food. You'll find huge portions and tasty Tex-Mex options for just about anyone. I was unable to finish my taco salad, and my partner had beef, pork, and chicken flautas and decided that the pork was best.
