This pizza is fantastic. I can't believe the low ratings. Y'all need to check your tastebuds. Realistically it's a 4.2/5, but I had to give it a 5 so people try it out. The wait staff is kind. When I was growing up, Pontillos was my absolute favorite local pizza joint. In 2021, they are far removed from what they used to be. I ordered a medium half cheese, half cup and char with 10 medium wings. When they told me the total was just shy of $30...I thought I hit a glitch in the matrix. No, not a large; no, not a sheet; no, not a specialty pizza. THIRTY. DOLLARS. This didn't match the prices on their website. Whatever. The pizza itself was underwhelming. It appeared to have been half heartedly assembled. The cup and char pepperonis were some of the best I've tasted in the area. I asked for pink sauce, and I'm not sure if they don't know what that means or not, but the sauce definitely tasted like standard red sauce. The crust and the way the pie was made was clearly not whatever bomb methods they were using a long time ago. Sad. Lastly- the wings. I was suggested to go here by my real estate agent when I mentioned missing NYC style pizza and so I finally got around to giving them a go, this was one of the worst places I have ever ordered food in my entire life where to begin.... We walked in and two younger guys one looking very young were at the counter no greeting whatsoever after standing there a minute I finally said What's good we were suggested to come here and they just stood there with blank looks on their face at which point we decided to go back and look through the menu we chose a chicken and broccoli and a cheese pizza NY style thin and we ordered right off the menu there on the wall and for some reason the total was 10$ more which took me a minute to process as it was much more than even the website so we go back and are sitting and we watch not one not two but three people come in and say they paid online and the kids tell them that they cannot find their order and gives an attitude and try and convince the people they ordered to the wrong store where there is in fact only one store in Greece after about 45 minutes of watching these kids play with their mouths their hair all kinds of weird stuff and completely ignore people walking in I walked up and asked about the prices because according to every price in there my total should have been 38 not 48 and the younger kid laughed and said "inflation" No inflation is the price difference between the menu on the wall and the outdated website not a whole 10$ on top of that so I think they are tipping themselves because when I asked about it he tried to take my receipt and not give it back to which I said Umm no I want my receipt. Long story short we sat there an hour to get to subpar overpriced pizzas from two kids that are most likely stealing tips from people because I was not the only one that noticed the insane price increase compared to what is actually on the stinking wall! I liked how old fashioned the inside seemed -- reminds me of every family pizza place ever. There was a bit of a wait even after we had ordered ahead (and I understand you have to call to place an order, no online?). According to their menu, they have very good specials. I wanted to share my experience on Super Bowl Sunday, which was also my daughter's birthday. She wanted pizza and wings for the game, so I called Pontillos , they told us an hour and forty five minutes, I said no problem. I arrived at pontillos and went inside to find about 12 very frustrated people, and a couple young kids behind the counter, the told me 15 minutes, which isn't bad, but 25 minutes later I had to leave with no food, they hadn't even started it yet. Compared to the other pizza chains around, Pontillo's definitely has the best wings in Rochester, and their individual slices are fantastic too. The pizza pies aren't as good as the slices but still very solid, and if you're getting pepperoni, I highly recommend getting the mini pepperoni. As a side note, the short Italian guy who owns the Webster Pontillo's (nearby Schroeder high school) is a real piece of work (rude, condescending, psychotic), and I will NEVER give that location my business ever again. read more

I ordered sweet peppers as a topping to come and find out that is what they call green peppers in this area. I have had east coast topping sweet peppers before and they were not green peppers. Not a big deal as I like green peppers. However, these were undercooked and a bit on the raw crunchy side. If I was in the area again, I would eat here. I called to complain only to be told the "the cook does not lie" Insinuating I was lying to them about my order. Pontillo's West Ridge has at it's best, some of the greatest pizza on the planet, done in that distinctive Rochester style, not the thin, limp pizza of NYC, not the thick pie of Chicago, but a chewy, flavorful crust, a hybrid of Sicilian and traditional. The sauce is up front and assertive, with a bit of a bite, and there is a lot of it, not simply some wimpy swirl of tomato paste with a basil leaf shaken at it. This is a sauce that makes you take note that you are In fact eating a pizza, and no matter what else you are doing at the time, it can just wait untill you have another slice. The sausage is of the crumble type, not sliced, and there is plenty of it. You must order this. Don't take my word for it, just make sure that this is on the pizza. The pepperoni is also good and plentiful, make sure to get this as well. The mushrooms come out of a can, so whatever you want to do is fine there. The cheese is perfect, not so much that it hides all the other wonderful components, but brings them all together for a pizza that Plato wold have left his cave for, because the ideal pizza had arrived. I had people deliver this pizza to me in Boston while I lived there and suffered through the blight that is Massachusetts pizza. This is the pizza I tried to tell those poor suffering bastards they were missing and needed to go to Rochester to get, and bring one back to me while they were at it. This Pontillo's at it's best. This pizza is not cheap, but at it's best it is definitely worth it. The problem is, it is not always at it's best. Sometimes it is just an ok pizza, better than any thing in Boston, sure, but disappointing when you are hoping for that pizza you can imagine Thor and Odin bringing to Asgard for a party. That sublime crust arrives as a rather soggy dough, the sauce isn't biting, and is in fact sitting quietly hiding on the pizza hoping it won't be noticed and wishing there was more cheese to hide under. It is saved by the generous helping of pepperoni and sausage fortunately. It is edible, still better then many, but it is not the pizza you ordered. Hands down the best pizza in Rochester. I've been ordering from this location for 25 years and never had a bad experience. It's a thicker crust so if your looking for a thin NYC style pizza this is not for you. Never skimpy on the toppings.The owner is a very nice guy always comes out and talks to my kids and I every time we come in. I've been getting pizza from the Greece, (104 W) since I was a teenager, (since 1975). This by far the best pizza I've ever had and still feel the same way in 2019. Great dough, great sauce and always cooked perfectly. I guess the only thing I could think of to get better is to have a web site for this location where you could order from. read more

This particular Pontillos is in a somewhat cumbersome location right on west ridge rd. Parking is a pain here but they do deliver. Anyway, this review will discuss the pizza and service, not the restaurant portion. I have never dined in here, we usually get it as a pick up. They do deliver, however given our proximity to this location we simply pick it up. I feel like their pizza style is fairly unique. We know the super thin ny style ones and we know the thick crusted Chicago style ones. We have here a hybrid of the two. Moderate thickness with a chewy texture. The perfect vessel by which to carry toppings to your mouth. It does not flop over with flaccidity. The sauce is pleasantly sweet, tangy, and salty. It is not an overbearing sauce like the ones I usually make. Nor is it a chunky sauce. They do not skimp on toppings. Those who know me know I'm very logical. More = more. Less does not equal more. Therefore, I find their use of toppings appealing. They have quite a few from which to choose. Their pepperoni is the standard flat, round, approx 1.5mm thick, about 4cm diameter. This is as opposed to the smaller diametered but thicker cup forming pepperoni (as in the ones that carbones uses). They use crumbled sausage should you order that particular topping. Nicely seasoned. I always like veggies on my pizza and they have a decent selection. However, the mushrooms taste like they were canned. I think the other veggies are fresh. Now, their pizza isn't the cheapest, but they are quite good for the price. A large with a few toppings came out to be close to $20. Now, I must discuss their chicken wings. They have probably what I consider some of the tastiest and meatiest wings in Rochester. The skin is crispy, the meat juicy, and it does not get completely drowned in sauce, which is rather annoying when it does happen. So yes, I do enjoy their wings thoroughly. I haven't had too much interaction with the employees since others usually do the talking and I do the eating, but on the few occasions I have had interaction, they seemed to know what they're doing and were quite courteous. Overall, an above average pizza joint that is a local favorite. I think 3.75 stars is fair. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place and it really does hurt me to write this review but I am going to be honest here and discuss what I liked and didn't liked. I cannot discuss the service itself as I picked it up twice so I am just going to chronoshift into the food itself. But I would like to add the building style itself is a nice classic style which beats most of the plain modern buildings I see so often today. Getting back on the track here, I ordered a sheet pizza for me and the rest of my family when we were currently staying in the Residence Inn hotel so when it arrived and I finally had a chance to taste it...I wasn't that impressed. I am not saying the pizza is terrible by any means but besides the awesome crusts...I just felt it didn't really stand out in anyway compared to other places I have visited in the area. I will not give this two stars as I believe that this pizza has its own distinct taste that you will either love or hate. Myself, I fell right in the middle...well just not the crust part. The crust was good but flat and the rest of this pie was just down right terrible. Pontillo's was always known for using frsh ingredients but these toppings were classic presliced out of the bag Sysco garbage. Everything was flat tasteless and of poor quality. I knew this was going to be a disappointment when I saw the mushrooms were out of a can and not fresh. All I can say is I yearn for the Pontillo's of old. Literally got city school district pizza oozing and soggy from tons of sauce crust thicker than a Chicago deep dish and 40 minute wait for picking up undercooked pizza. Not actually 5 stars but I thought this place deserved a bump seeing as it is for some reason 2.5 stars. The pizza was good albeit kinda expensive ($25 including tip for a medium 2 topping pizza and soda) and is much better than you'll get at any national chain. Papa johns sucks so much every time I order they screw it up and give me free food or a credit. But I hate their food so I'm spending more on decent Za. I've been a long time customer-over 20 years! However lately I have been disappointed! I am not really sure why pepperoni pizza with light sauce is so easily messed up? It comes under cooked or burned & smothered in sauce the last few times we've ordered! I also don't appreciate the political ads on my pizza box! I had been ordering from this location for 15 years . Yesterday i ordered a large pep pizza with light sauce,A doz med wings and an order of chicken fingers. My order was wrong again....totally wrong . After the last wrong order (which was 6 months ago) I was told i was going to get reimbursed .... That never happened ... Well this time i called the store to see if they will deliver the right order and take the wrong food back totaly uneaten... When i called the 15 year old girl told us only a manager can fix this situation but all the managers are too busy to talk to me. After repeatedly saying I need to talk to a manager now, I then was able to speak with a manager who used voulgour laungauge and was screaming at me. He also kept asking me where i work and if i knew about customer service and furthermore that they did not want my business any more and hung up on me... By far the worst experience of my life and I will never be going there again. If you want the correct food you order I suggest you pick a different place to go. read more
