Tried Ponzu recently and actually had to go twice! Apparently there is a wrong way and a right way to do Ponzu so do your research! Our first time around was not great but I'm chocking it up to bad ordering. We got some weird options trying to be adventurous and it was not the vibes. Only thing we really loved were the steamed buns - phenomenal! BUT WAIT! We went back! So many people LOVE ponzu and were kind enough to give some tips on what to order so we went back again! Nice fresh modern aesthetic that was welcoming and pleasant. Food was fantastic. Fresh and delicious. I got the poke bowl and was dazzled by the presentation and pleasantly surprised by the portion. In fact I couldn't finish it. To friends with my husband and I shared a lunch combo and were both fully satisfied and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was fantastic and quick which we needed as we were on just a short lunch break. And this despite there being a technical difficulty when we arrived with an internet outage or something like that. We were checked on several times, waters kept full. My friend and I swung by here on a walk in Aksarben looking for a small bite. We sat out on the patio, and it was wonderful to be shaded and comfortable while still getting to enjoy the fresh air! Our server was kind and gave us our time as we looked over the menu. We started off with the fries, truffle, and we both really enjoyed both the size of the serving and the sauces! The truffle sauce was unique, creamy, and the truffle flavor was remarkably strong compared to other truffle products I've had! I personally ordered the Crunchy Veggie Roll and it HIT THE SPOT. The fillings were a perfect combination of fresh and crunchy but with the cream cheese making it hearty, and the Panko on the outside was perfection: crispy and satisfying. My friend ordered the tempura shrimp! She states it is her favorite roll on the menu and her go-to at Ponzu! Pretty solid little Japanese restaurant if you want sushi in Aksarben. We stopped by here for lunch, taking a buddy of mine for sushi in Omaha area. We got the lunch combo, which included some Nigri and two rolls. We started out with a bowl of miso soup, which was very tasty. Never had mushrooms in it before. That was a plus. If you've stayed in this area, there are a lot of choices, but they were busy and that is a good sign. I was sat immediately and the host was very accommodating. The ambiance was typical sushi restaurant. The rolls I ordered were some of their more popular ones. I especially liked the Esmeralda! Full of flavor and it had a slight spicy kick. The other two rolls were good. I accompanied my meal with sake. The sake complemented the rolls nicely. The prices were about average for a sushi place. $12 - $15 for a roll. I got takeout, I have a digestive issue so I don't eat seaweed so I stick to sashimi and nigiri. I'm used to most sushi restaurants where an order of sashimi is 3 pieces or an order of nigiri is 2 pieces. Their prices for the orders were about the same as anywhere else so I assumed they just followed that convention. Turned out it was ~$5 per piece of nigiri. And it was decent sushi - on par with most of the decent sushi restaurants I frequent. I'm just disappointed I spent the same amount here as I would have at any other sushi place and got half as much sushi. I also got the hotate - scallop - and was disappointed to find they use the little dime sized bay scallops which is unusual for a sushi place. Their lobster rangoon was just okay, a little on the salty side. Not like crab rangoons I can overindulge on at most Asian restaurants. So overall I'd call it a decent enough meal but overpriced. For rolls they may be fine but for traditional nigiri I'll just go to one of the other decent sushi places, there are so many great options around this area. read more

I went while visiting the area. There was a big event in the area but was able to find parking. Was able to be seated right away. It was busy but not super crowded. I ordered a teriyaki chicken with rice and asparagus. Overall the food was okay. It was not really saucy which I was expecting some. Went to Ponzu tonight for some sushi. This was my first time there and I am a fan of sushi and it was recommended by a friend. The restaurant seem huge and it wasn't busy at all on this Monday evening. We picked out 3 sushi to sample tonight and they were the Philly, Coco Loco and the Portland. If you look at my photo that is the order from left to right as well. I really enjoyed the Philly and the Coco Loco equally. The Coco Loco could have had a touch less mango sauce but it was good, just a little heavy sauced. The Philly was my least favorite of the three. We also tried the miso soup and it was very good. Our waitress was very nice and attentive but I would say the only negative is that when I ordered a beer they were out of it so I had to choose something else. I wanted the Tsing Tao but ended up getting the Tiger which was just fine. I'd still go back here as it was good food. read more

I've eaten at this restaurant probably ten times and always enjoyed it until today. We ate there tonight and the food was awful. the chicken lettuce wraps had no flavor and were served with large strips of chicken rather than shredded chicken. The rice in the sushi was the wrong type. it was fluffy basmati type rice rather than sticky rice and the sushi was gross. Wow, I've been here many times over the years and was surprised to find I've never written a review! My spouse and I went to an afternoon movie this weekend (first time going together in years!) and he suggested Ponzu afterwards since it's close. They have a good selection of "happy hour" priced raw and non-raw house rolls. I usually go for the crazy crab and the calamari, my two favorites - and currently at $6 per roll, reasonably priced. For some reason, my spouse ordered really fancy expensive ones off the regular menu. Sometimes late at night, when sleep escapes me, I think of all the regrets in my life...and not visiting here sooner always comes to the forefront. But seriously, this place is fantastic. For obvious reasons, we did it for takeout and ordered 7 rolls. All the rolls were stuffed full and worth the price. We ordered all these rolls off the happy hour menu...it felt like highway robbery. One minor issue was none of the sauces were labeled so we weren't sure which sauce went with which roll. Definitely wasn't a big deal (we figured it out), but if you order takeout here you might want to ensure you know the roll for the associated sauce before bringing it home. Not a fan. Ponzu's floors are sticky's The door to the restroom had hand-smears all over the stainless steel plate. I used my elbow to push it open (it's okay for elbows to be germy, right?). The bathroom floor looked as though it hadn't been mopped for weeks. If the manager keeps the restaurant dirty, then how concerned is he/she with the cleanliness of the kitchen, where they are preparing my fish? The food was meh. The sushi didn't smell that fresh, the fries weren't that crisp (wait...why ARE there fries on that menu, anyway....) and the fish tacos weren't worth ordering again (unless you really, REALLY like cabbage. Came here on a Tuesday night about a month ago and it was really quiet and easy to sit down. We were probably 1 of 5 people total. The food was great, the roll farthest away was warm when eating and the roll closest was cold. We also had calamari and ate that ish up. The only reason I'm not giving a 5 is because I had to continually ask the waiter for water. Generally, I give grace but with us being the only few people in there, I would have enjoyed the experience even more had I not had to flag him down several times. As someone who has served, I get that it's tough and guests don't always know what's going on with your life, but doing what you can to be respectful is great etiquette. After a moment of confusion, our table laughed a little and continued on with the meal. I did enjoy the Shrimp Appetizer. The sauce was flavorful and complimented well. We had a few sushi dishes from the HH menu and they were good, but I think it was difficult to compare this spot to other local Sushi places. It wasn't bad. The scallions added a nice flavor and I saw a mushroom or two along with seaweed and tofu. This soup had potential; I appreciated the variety in the bowl. The sashimi combo consisted of salmon, tuna and hamachi, two pieces each. The pieces were very small. It wasn't extraordinarily fresh, but the flavor was good. The hamachi was actually quite tasty. I ordered the hamachi roll to go with my sashimi. It too was quite okay. All this went down (lunch, that is), with me having no idea what it would cost. I either missed the prices or it wasn't on the menu. It is the cost of this satisfying lunch that raised my rating from a three to a four. The meal felt a bit like a steal at $14. I feel like there are so many sushi places that it's hard to stand out and Ponzu really didn't do it for me. First of all, it was hard to find. I drove around Askarben Village several times before finally stopping to ask. I even called to figure out where it was. I had driven past it multiple times as it's tucked away behind another restaurant and the door is actually in a corridor/aisle. Signage is terrible. When I finally made it inside, I agree with other reviews, it's nice. It's bright and area, inviting and clean. I was in the area for business and on my own so I headed straight for the bar. It was steadily busy but the bartender helped me immediately. I opted for the lunch special which is three rolls for $18. It's a pretty good deal although there aren't a lot of choices of 'fancy' rolls. But I trend toward getting the more simple ones so it was easy for me to make a selection. Especially for that price! One roll was the Fried Salmon. It was great! I rarely get fried rolls but I really liked the crunch and the flavor. The sauce was also wonderful. The Berry Bomb was just ok. It was not as spicy as I thought it would be (which I liked) but it was pretty much a California roll with berry sauce. It didn't wow me. My third and final roll was a tuna roll. The tuna looked suspiciously dark but I went for it. Maybe that's a good thing? It was very simple. Maybe too simple. I added wasabi for a little more pizazz. For some reason the flavor of the rice really overpowered the tuna. It wasn't a good choice. Service was great, miso soup pretty good. I saw a lot of business professionals enjoying lunch here and if I was in the area and craving sushi, I'd be back but I'd probably explore the menu a little more. read more

On Omaha Food Lover's Facebook page there was a call for recommendations for a Cubano Sandwich. I thinks I knew of all mentioned places when Ponzu of alł places was listed, so I had to give it a try. Being Takeout Tuesday I decided to call an order for after my Aksarben Village shift ended. When I arrived my order was being boxed up, and I had to endure to smell all the way home, little did I know the sandwich was buried under a container of fries. The sandwich had Crispy pork, cob smoked ham, sake pickle, provolone, sriracha mustards. I can't decide what ingredient made my day but it was great, all from a place I had only had sushi before. Not overwhelmingly, but just enough that you can't really get rid of it with soy sauce or the sauce put on top. No one likes fishy-tasting fish. The one fried/cooked on we got was also sad. The breading on the outside was nowhere near crispy, more like chewy which is not pleasant. The flavors were there, but texture-wise it just was not working.
