My family introduced me to this restaurant a couple years back, and let me tell you, their food is always as amazing as the day I first tried it. I live at pretty much the opposite side of the country, so every time I visit my family in Burlington this is always the first place I suggest. My favorite thing to get here is the chicken fried rice. There is always so much flavor and everything in it just goes together so well. Not only is their food amazing, but the people here are too. As we traveled through Iowa, good Thai food is not what we expected; however, this was a perfect spot. It's a small restaurant in downtown Burlington, so seating can be difficult during busy hours. Thankfully, we grabbed the last table before the rush. Our waitress was friendly and sweet. Despite being busy, she was attentive and timely. The lunch menu was limited to a few items, but they had what we wanted: Massaman curry with tofu (requested vegetarian) and egg rolls (not pictured). They were excellent! The curry was well seasoned and perfectly spiced; tofu was fresh and lightly fried; potatoes were flavorful and not bland; and veggies were fresh! The egg rolls were just as good, although I don't recall if they came with dipping sauce -- curry was too good for me to notice! You cannot find Thai food for $9 in California, not even lunch time, so this was a bonus. I'm sure their dinner menu holds up just as great, if not better. Great food! I love that every meal has a vegetarian option with tofu. The Pad Phet had a great assortment of veggies and lots of flavor. The egg rolls were fantastic as well. Wish I could've given this a higher rating but we encountered quite a few issues in our most recent meal at Pookie's. Ordered our food shortly after being seated around 7:00pm on a weeknight. The food took about 45 minutes to arrive. They messed up two of the orders, one came with beef instead of chicken and one of the appetizers never showed up. That said, the food that did arrive was very tasty and seems authentically Thai. They are accommodating about different spice levels. Seems like there are just 2 people working in the kitchen but if you are prepared to wait, it is not a bad choice for Thai food in this area. read more

Very interesting place. I was visiting my in-laws by the border of Illinois and we needed to run some errands in Burlington. Heard about this so we figured to give it a try The location was simple to find. And there are some street parking outside. No issues trying to location and our gps apps took us directly to the place. We went inside and it is hot during our humid day. Not sure if they have a/c or it's broken but even with the few fans, it was a little warm inside Once we entered, we were welcomed immediately by a lovely female. She told us to sit anywhere. The restaurant is an interesting concept. For lunch, they have only a few specials only. I ordered the crab rangoons, shrimp fried rice and combo pho bowl. All the food was fresh and delicious. I found Pookie's when I was in Burlington for a business trip. I called in a take out order for dinner: the young man who answered was very nice and helpful. He let me know it would be 20 to 30 minutes before it would be ready because of how busy they were. I always appreciate when a restaurant is upfront about how long things are going to take. I said no problem and asked for a vegan recommendation. He recommended the green curry, which sounded perfect, as it is often one of my favorite thai dishes wherever I go. As others have mentioned there is plenty of street parking. The inside of Pookie's is simple but clean, with a fair number of tables for seating. When I walked in to pick up my order I paid at the register and waited for a few more minutes. Then I was given my order and I left to head back to my hotel. The curry was AMAZING--I could have eaten two more orders of it and would not have been sorry. Also the prices were so reasonable I could have ordered two more orders and have easily afforded it. I would recommend Pookie's to anyone looking for some great Thai food. They seem to get quite busy with take out orders at lunch or dinner, so if you're going to phone one in, I'd call at least an hour in advance of your desired pick up time. read more

Had the Paneng Curry yesterday and Tom Yum soup at lunchtime and both were fabulous! I don't live here but have been im town frequently over the past six months and was very happy when this place opened as Thai is my favorite restaurant cuisine. Best Tom Yum I have ever had! Excellent lunch here. Beef and rice was great and prepared quickly. Vegetarian egg rolls are not to be missed.
