Been here a number of times, and overall I'd go with it being quite good. Service is usually great and I love the beer list and giant patio. My boyfriend and I only recently started coming back here. We both got mild food poisoning once after eating here a few years ago and have stayed away. But mistakes can happen anywhere, and we've started coming back. I love their fish sandwich, and their clam chowder is seriously one of the best ever. This place can be quite pricey. For 2 entrees and 2 drinks for dinner, plan of dropping at least $50 with tip. I go to Poor Phil's often since I live within an earshot, but I would go more often if the food was better. The few items I did like are different now or seem to be. For example, the hot wings have become bigger, greasier and gross just like the fish and chips I reviewed before. That's why I am giving the downgrade. I recently decided to explore more of the menu and ordered the black bean burger which was thin, bland and dry. I would have been happier eating pills out of my shirt. It's time for a decent menu! The food is ridiculously overpriced, especially given its lackluster quality. I had the crawdaddy etouffee, which had a congealed film on it by the time it made it to the table. There was no depth of flavor or robustness to it. My husband had the lobster roll, which was drowning mayonnaise with a ton of dill. The dill was so overpowering you couldn't taste the lobster at all. The fish and chips that my kids split was simultaneously watery on the outside and overcooked & dry on the inside. The service was equally horrible. Also, warning to other parents: apparently the decorator of the women's bathroom thinks that porn makes great artwork. Discover this place because it was on Blackhawks List Bars. Been here 3 times for game and one time for lunch with friends. All times we've had great service and very tasty food. This bar is the place to be for Blackhawks game for sure. There are some true die-hard fans that come here and one guy had an amazing outfit. Free popcorn!! read more

An Oak Park Staple. It was one of the only places to get a drink late until Oak Park changed their laws. Good outside seating but can get crowded inside. Good selection of beer and drinks. Food ranges from just OK to great. The best thing on the menu is the Lobster Roll but it is a little pricey. It is worth it. Brunch is good there and the bloody mary is good. One of the best places in town by far. I'm not one for seafood at all, but even I enjoy their lobster rolls. Their fries are delicious, as are their burgers, and the service is always amazing. Last time I went with my boyfriend our very sweet waitress was overwhelmed with too many tables so she was a little slow-but surprised us with a complimentary sundae and didn't charge us for our drinks. This looks & feels like a one of those 80's food chain restaurants like a Bennigans or a Ruby Tuesday. There is free popcorn everywhere and you seat yourself. The beer selection is ridiculously large, emphasis on large! Don't let the bar setting put you off from trying the seafood though. I had the most delicious crab leg meal there. This has always been a favorite. However, this morning was a celebratory breakfast. Our server had a trainee with her who not long after our arrival spilled two full glasses of water on me and in my purse. Okay, he's a trainee, but our server, Sarah, did not even apologize. Instead, she made a joke about spilling coffee, as I sat in my soaking wet clothes. There was no dispensation of a free drink or anything offered. When Sarah asked if everything was okay when we were leaving, I said that it was really awful that no one said anything about me getting water spilled all over me. Instead of offering an apology, she made another joke about it. So while the food was good, as usual, as I left in my still wet clothes and many things wet in my purse, I thought, it will be a while before I go back and will certainly ask for a different server than Sarah. read more

I grew up in the area and have been coming here for 16 years. I love the atmosphere, the beer and it's a great place to watch a game but the food (fish and chips are subpar and their gazpacho was way too salty--- though the free popcorn and sweet potato fries are great!) and (occasionally) the service could use some work. Always a great place to grab a great drink and some free popcorn! Bartenders are knowledgeable, their own cocktail list is numbered and each one as delicious as the next. Their beers they have on tap are sometimes hard to find in the real world so it's great to go there and try something new. And the oysters: so good and fresh!I love oysters and they always have some great ones here. Given, if you don't come for happy hour for these while they are a dollar they do cost quite a bit ($4 each sometimes, and that adds up if you get a dozen or a half dozen with a drink) but they are always fresh and the quality is always clean tasting. Let me just say I've been here before but tonight was such a disappointment. I was even embarrassed cause I highly recommended this place to some friends and they were all not satisfied. The manager and bartender on this Tuesday night were dicks! Sometimes you have to get called out. First Time we where told to be quite we obliged but then we where just laughing and got told to shut up. Un called for on a Tuesday night when we were making there night. Just lost a customer plus some new recruits. Phil thank your Tuesday night manager plus bartender never experienced that in my 20 years going there. Lost a customer. I've been coming here since before I could see over the bar tables. I've never had a dish here I haven't liked. Their clam chowder is where it's at - so delicious your mouth will be watering even after you've finished it. The oysters are very tasty too. Now, the last time I had an oyster before having them here was when I was about 6 years old and didn't know you actually had to chew them. Call me crazy, but all I knew was my parents were slurpin' them down so that's what I thought you did... I've come a long way since then and have found that they're actually one of my favorite appetizers. Their salads are huge and full of flavor and their crab legs are succulent and filling as well. A bit pricey for what it is, but you can't really beat the location and the great service. The food here is just so-so. Having eaten here a handful of times now and tried multiple items from the menu, I can say for a fact that the chef(s) here tend to be a bit heavy handed with the salt. Everything I've ordered here so far was a bit too salty (but I guess salt makes you drink more beer). The food here is nothing to write home about, but they do have a pretty extensive beer list. The patio is a great place to hang out with a cold one on a hot summer day or night. And since Poor Phil's is located right on Marion in the pleasant district of Oak Park, the atmosphere and ambiance is hard to beat. Price is OK, and service has always been phenomenal. I was very disappointed when I ordered the, "served extremely rare" Ahi Tuna Sandwich and it arrived grayer than the London sky. When I mentioned to the server that he may want to tell the cook of the description on the menu and how it was the opposite of what I received, he was flippant and clueless. My fiancé and I decided to celebrate a very nontraditional St.Paddy's day this year by having dinner and drinks @Poor Phils. It had been yrs since I've been here. Although it seems they've expanded the restaurant and added a few additional upgrades, they really are lacking in a fully attentive staff. Our server was friendly but hard to find at times; specifically when we wanted to order more drinks or even when it came time to asking for the check. The food was ok. I had the shrimp basket and my fiancé had a burger. The one thing that was really good was the Murphy's mudslide. It actually made up for the night!! Give the place 2 stars maybe a half on behalf of the mudslide but that's it. The atmosphere is fun there. Id say it's a place worth checking out for the drinks, but eat somewhere else! I go here when I want craft beer, late at night, without an obnoxious, overly noisy ambiance (Duckfat, I'm looking your way, and Ale House has a horrible beer list). Great beer list here that's not horribly priced. Decent sandwiches - I usually get the fish & chips here. Jambalaya is kind of underwhelming. Free popcorn is pretty cool. Nice staff. They're one of the few non-Chicago establishments that pours Goose Island's Green Line Pale Ale. It's nice that Phils is right next to the Green Line also, so it's easy to get to from the city, or to use as a pre-gaming establishment before going downtown. I'd been there a number of times over the last 13 years. The seating inside is a little tight for me, but when it's nice out there's seating outside, so plus a star for that. It's one of those places I'd go to meet friends and catch up. The ambiance is okay. Drink prices are okay. I thought the food on the expensive side. I'm not a fan of seafood per se, so I can't really speak to that. Yesterday I had 'Da Bomb' burger and it was okay. Over all I'd just that I'd have to say that my experience, was 'just okay.' Server was fine, not too loud and you could hear someone you were trying to talk to. I'm sure I'll be back when some friends drag me there again. I guess the ambiance is the highlight for me. I'd been hearing about this restaurant for years. We gave it a try tonight. The food was pretty pricey. Portions were kinda of small. My son ordered the shrimp Po Boy and only got 5 shrimp. My daughter's clam chowder was dense liked thick oatmeal. My lobster quesadilla was a good size but was bland and mostly cheese. The service was wonderful. I will never go there again. read more

You have to try the cucumber and melon sangria. With the wonderful 69-degree weather we had today, it was the perfect drink to bring the taste of summer. So refreshing! A attractive looking eatery or bar underneath some old hotel in the middle of Oak Park. Just that alone will get three stars. Specializing in sea food is another reason to like this place. Although the menu is not really extensive there are some interesting things at this place. I just tried the shrimp and it was top quality. The place seemed a bit cramped even on a Monday afternoon. I can't imagine how it is when it is crowded. There is seating in a back room, but they have no televisions at all. So if you want to watch something like sports this is not the place even though they have plenty of sports stuff on walls.A great unique place nonetheless. read more
