I am from out of town but I always make sure to stop by Poorhouse Pies when I am visiting! I usually pick up 5-6 pies and take some home to freeze. My favorite by far is the Cubano it is a must try, it is a dinner pie that will leave you very satisfied the pickles in it are delicious. I also am a fan of the shepards pie it is what you would expect but better executed than average. This time I tried something new and got the lemon swirl cheesecake and it was perfect, perfect around of sweet, sour, tart, and creamy I am going back to get another to take home! read more

What a find! We are vacationing in Smuggs Resort in Vermont and on our drive to Ben & Jerry's tour we saw a pie sign. We doubled back because Yelp said it closes at 4 and we weren't sure we would make it back in time. So as greedy foodies we are we couldn't miss the opportunity. I'm so glad we U-turned it back. Holy MOLY these pies were good. Specifically the chicken pot pie--totally melt-in-mouth. We were trying to grab a pie on our way home one day and weren't going to make it before they closed, but they were kind enough to stay an extra five minutes for us. That said, double check your fruit pies. We had a bit of a sketchy incident with finding a few mold spores in a fruit pie (blueberry peach, purchased 2 days before the sell by date). It was sitting at room temperature for 2.5 days in my house, so maybe it was on me, but it had been on an un-refrigerated shelf in the store so I'm not really sure what that was all about. I really wish I could give this place five stars, and I absolutely would for the chicken pot pie alone, but the mold experience made me a little queasy. Actually, unfortunately, some of the pie was eaten before we realized the mold situation... to Poorhouse's credit, if not for visually seeing the mold spores, we would never have known it was there (the pie still tasted pretty kick-ass). The prices were a bit high, but not by any means unreasonable- 25 dollars for a chicken pot pie that served as lunch and dinner and 24 (I think?) for the fruit pie that (would've) fed 8 people. This would definitely be a 5/5 star review if not for the mold... just put your pies in the fridge to be safe read more

This place is amazing. Went here on a Sunday morning and there was already a little line, but it moved quickly. The shop itself is small, but the selection of pies is outstanding. What a perfect treat tucked away in Vermont! We stopped by at around 6pm and saw that the shed was closed. Luckily we came back the next day at 10:30 and grabbed a pie! The shed is pretty small so one person or two jammed people can fit at a time. The system is straight forward: check out the pie selections, put money in the box, take pie and enjoy! Upon arriving at Poorhouse Pies, one's reaction might be, "Holy granola, Batman!" This place, essentially a shack in the sticks with self-service pies, is as funky as the day is long and works in an area like Burlington, Vermont and its surroundings. Most people have given Poorhouse Pies 5 stars. I have been here courtesy of a friend who lives in this area and who purchased two pies. As such, I did not pay for the pies. The pies were good, though not exactly "off the charts" good for the prices I saw. What might also affect one's opinion of this outfit and its nifty idea are the flavors of the pies they are featuring at the time one visits. Looking at other people's photos, I would have liked the key lime pie or most pies with chocolate! Per the photos I will attach, pumpkin pies were available that day, as were peach pies (but as a mix with another fruit). I like peach-only pies. This is an opportunity to support a small business and, since I don't buy whole pies, it made sense in that the pies were to be eaten by several people. Sometimes, I do cave in to that impulse purchase, individually packaged, and very processed slice of pie for under $1 at the grocery store and for which the nutritional label is frightening. Again, this is slightly outside of Burlington, Vermont and it seems to be a hit with many locals who speak of it with fondness and amusement. Poorhouse Pie's pie shack is well suited to this area in that it is spot-on for an earthy-crunchy locale with a fair amount of disposable income. If you're not familiar with the Burlington, Vermont area, then think Boulder, CO, Madison, WI, Asheville, NC, Sedona, AZ, or any smaller collegiate and/or progressive town in the upper left-hand corner of the country. If assigning stars according to word count, "Holy granola, Batman!" and "labor of love" make for 3 stars, but "love" is a four letter word, as is "good." For their good pies, Poorhouse Pies gets 4 stars from me. read more

Great pies. One day, while driving nearby, we made a stop and picked up the Rainbow Quiche. We had some for breakfast the next day, and enjoyed it so much we came back to pick up a few more pies the next day. Shepherds pie and Denver quiche. Also great. I imagine the chicken pot pie sold out quickly, I wanted to try it. We arrived around 1:30pm on weekdays. On both days, there was was 1 shepherd pie, no chicken pot pie, plenty of dessert pies, and enough quiches to take our pick. I would rank our pies: 1. Rainbow Quiche 2. Shepherd Pie 3. My daughter had a craving for raspberry pie on a quiet Saturday afternoon, and we couldn't find anything in town where we live. As a 16 year old, she started searching online, and next thing I knew she was on thing phone reserving a pie for us to pick up. In the car we went for an adventure! What an amazing find! Since we reserved our pie, we picked it up in the bakery, vs the pie shed, and the smell of heaven baking was just so warm and sweet. Yum! The smell alone would have allowed me to fork over far more money than was asked for the beautifully baked pie ($13.50). We couldn't resist checked out the pie shed just to see what other goodies were available, and spent a bit of time reading notes from other admirers who had come before us tacked to the walls of the shop, and drooling over the selection of other pies available on this day. In the end, we opted to leave with only our raspberry pie, but we know we'll be back several more times. The pie was amazing- the crust was delicious (and I don't normally appreciate crust). I have a very happy teenager on my hands. Thank you Poorhouse Pies for being the reason for a great mother-daughter adventure. Our mouths were watering as we drove to this cute little destination. We drove the day before from Glens Falls, NY. The quaintness doesn't disappoint. We bought coffee and prepared to ooh and ahh as we devoured pie at the umbrella table and chairs. We chose key lime pie which wasn't tart enough. Too sweet. We tried again with the strawberry rhubarb, which teasted like a canned filling. In both cases there was too much crust as compared to the amount of filling. The flour crust was too thick and doughy, not flakey, the way Mom used to make it. Prices were $16 for the Key Lime and $12.50 for the other. Visiting the Poorhouse Pie Shed is by far one of my top 5 favorite things to do. Not only are the pies scrumcious & worth the trip but the shed is pretty darn cool too. The country setting & backdrop of Mt. Mansfield just adds to the ambiance. I just found out today that if you go on Sunday morning, they are making hot & fresh donuts (plain, sugar, jelly). This ranks as one of the best ideas ever. An adorable self-serve pie shack? It may not work everywhere, but it definitely works in Vermont. Oozing with charm, the pie stand sits on the edge of the piemakers' property, giving them easy access to refill it with fresh pies throughout the day. There is a fridge for cream pies while the fruit pies are on an opposite shelf. The shack is adorned with love letters and thank you notes, testimony to the quality. They have a lock box where you can submit payment for the pies (checks and cash!), plus a pen and paper for doing the math on your multiple pies or, to add a note with the rest of the adoring fans. Poorhouse Pies also provide forks, napkins, little paper trays and plenty of seating right outside the shack should you be unable to wait to dig in. They only sell whole pies, but the temptation is no less great. They list the featured pies of the month on the door to the shack, but you will not always find all of them on any given day. You might also find a pie or two that isn't on the list, which adds to the fun of looking at all of the pies when making your decision. If you are lucky enough to come on Sunday, they also make fresh doughnuts. I have not been that lucky yet, but I imagine they go quickly, so check their website for the exact day and time, and get there early! I have been here a few times now, and I have tried the following pies: - Key Lime Pie: probably the second best key lime pie I've ever had, and absolutely by far the hit of the party I brought it to. It drummed up the most buzz and was the first pie devoured. - Cherry Crumb Pie: Nice and flaky but tender crust. Loved it! - Lemon Cream Pie: the absolute best pie I have had, ever, let alone from Poorhouse Pies. If this is in the shack, get it!! It has the most delicious crumbly graham cracker crust, honestly unlike anything I've ever had, and the lemon is perfectly tart and tangy but sweet. OMG the stuff dreams are made of. Everyone who tried it (6 people) agreed. We fought over the last piece, lol. - Triple Chocolate Cream Pie: Not for the faint of heart! I got this for my dear friend, a real chocolate lover, and even he said a super small piece would do. Very, very intensely chocolate! - Raspberry Peach Crumb Pie: Another delight! Probably my personal second favorite, as I really like tart and sweet desserts. This pie combined their wonderful crumbly crumble topping and their pie crust, which is a match made in heaven. - Grasshopper Pie: Uh oh. The reason I only give it 4 stars.... mostly due to circumstances but also great disappointment. After my first trip there, and having tried the raspberry and lemon cream, I thought Poorhouse could do no wrong. I drove back 1.5 hours, RT), and the Grasshopper was the only pie I grabbed. My friends and I were very excited to try it, but when we took the first bite, all of us made a strange face and looked at each other. This was no cream pie, but rather marshmallow. Boo. The Oreo crust couldn't save this dog, it was just an edible.
