Truly one of the best hidden gems in the area! Tucked away in the tiny town of St. Rose, Illinois, this amazing restaurant is absolutely worth the drive. Reservations for 10 on a Friday with a server that did a terrific job of taking care of our group while also having another 10 top and a couple smaller tables. I need to start splitting an entree with my wife when we come here since we all over order apps. This place can get pretty busy during the holidays so I definitely recommend making a reservation! We got a half order of onion rings (they're HUGE!) and the seafood bruschetta for our appetizers. Anyway... the two of us had water and a Dr. Pepper which came at once along with warm bread. Was disappointed the butter was margarine. My opinion if your going to go out why skimp on the butter? I know it's a cost cutter but margarine is poison. Leaves an after taste and kinda messed up the bread. Moving along. We ordered southwest raviolis and skillet mushrooms for appetizers Both were pretty good. Again the garlic butter was not butter. It was a clarified margarine. It almost ruined it if it wasn't so tasty. Would have been spectacular with real butter. Raviolis were delicious with a sweet southwest sauce. Very good. For dinner my best girl had the broccoli con chicken. A take on Alfredo. It was delicious. I hade the 14oz ribeye rare. It was cooked perfectly as I would have had it at home. The seasoning they used was very tasty. The steak was laid on a sauce that I found out was a reduced Andria's sauce. I loved it. When I asked about what it was the manager was kind enough to let me know the ingredients and gave me some to take home. With my steak I had a vegetable medley of green beans and zucchini and squash. It was very tasty also. I'm a sauce guy so I asked for A1. Turns out the sauce bed under the steak was a perfect combination. Also on the side was Gouda smashed potatoes. A first for me. Kinda thick and tacky but a little of that special sauce and they kicked ass! Dinner salads were on a freezing cold place. I like that. Balsamic vinegar for me was pretty strong but very very good. Folks seem to love this place, but our experience did not match the glowing reviews, and we won't be back. Pros (ish): - [[HIGHLIGHT]]They've obviously put work into the ambience. Framed vintage alcohol ads line the walls, and topping the bar is a unique Budweiser diorama/spinning mobile-type thing. There are several large taxidermied heads on the walls, and even a bear in the booth nearest the door![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - The bread had good flavor and did not need the large scoop of margarine it was served with. - The ingredients were clearly high-quality, if badly prepared and over-priced for what you get. - Our steaks were cooked to the requested doneness. Cons: - The service was lacking. We sat for ten minutes with empty drink glasses, trying to catch the attention of our server for a refill (our first and only), while she leaned against the end of the bar scrolling on her phone. - The steaks tasted overwhelmingly of char, as though their grill has never been cleaned and they're relying on that to impart flavor. This was especially disappointing as my spouse decided to order the locally-raised beef at an extra cost, only to find it nearly inedible due to the way it was cooked. - The sides were all pretty mediocre. After the disappointment of the steak, I basically ate enough of the bread and the vegetable medley to not be hungry anymore, and called it quits. - The prices are truly wild for what you get, even if everything was delicious (which it wasn't). Their basic garden salad, if you get it separately from ordering an entree, is $7. And it's a plate of iceberg lettuce with a single cherry tomato, a single ring slice of onion, and a single slice of cucumber. Their steak prices are pretty much double or more what a comparable meal costs at Longhorn or Roadhouse, with the two cheapest steaks being the sirloin at $32 and the NY Strip at $43. - There were weird credit-card hijinks in the following days, where we were charged our normal total with the tip we left included...but then also separately charged the tip again! When my spouse called to inquire, they just said "wait a few days and call us back if the extra charge doesn't disappear". No apology or explanation. The charge did fall off, but it was further reason (not that we needed any) to avoid giving them a second chance later. read more

My dad specifically requested eating dinner here to celebrate his birthday. It feels like you're driving in the middle of nowhere to get to this place with cattle and cornfields surrounding you, but once you've made it, it's hard to miss! If you've heard about Popeye's, you've probably heard about their onion rings. Just get them... trust me. I don't even like onion rings, but these are truly something special. My family shared a half order, which was still a massive portion. I love that the onion isn't super stringy and that the breading doesn't fall off. We also shared an order of toasted ravs for an appetizer. Our meals came out with a complimentary basket of bread and butter. We all got side caesar salads with our meals. My dad and sister both ordered steak. My mom had chicken and fries. I had pasta con broccoli with chicken and a sweet potato on the side. You won't believe the absolutely gigantic portion sizes. It's safe to say that I had enough leftovers for multiple meals the rest of the week. The service here has always been really great. My father in law has loved this place for a long time and we usually go here for his birthday. We had a party of 11 for my father in law's birthday. We had onion rings and chicken livers and gizzards as an appetizer. Onion rings were spot on but the livers and gizzards were pretty bland. Not what I remembered them to be from previous visits. Some adult beverages were had and the "old fashioned" had way too much bitters in them and was tough to drink. The steaks were disappointing to everyone that ordered one, Not cooked correctly and not seasoned very well. For the price we were disappointed to say the least. My niece got the Mac and cheese and it tasted like the milk had soured it was pretty gross. The garlic shrimp was the best thing of all of the items that were ordered. We did not make a fuss because it was my father in law's birthday and he's ill. We are pretty certain this is going to be his last birthday remembering all of us. So we just made the best of it. Without him wanting to go here, I don't think my husband and I will be back. It's sad when a place that used to be top tier falls short. The grilled prime rib is fantabulous. The Italian wedding cake is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Really, almost everything is good. Wine was surprisingly good, and very reasonably priced. I didn't want to make a fuss about it, but three of the ribeyes, ordered medium rare, were overcooked, had no marbling, and were very dry. Recently visited with another couple. The food was delightful. The salmon,and halibut were prepared to perfection. The ribeye and cognac pork chops were also delightful. The servings were plentiful. The mountain of onion rings were more the four of us dared to eat prior to our meal. The service was spot on, our primary server was friendly and helpful with explanations to inform our choices. The wait staff was ready to refill water glasses and clearing plates from empty plates. The timing of the courses was perfect and we weren't rushed despite the growing number of walk ins waiting to be seated. The steak was actually the first time I can say cooked to perfection med.well shout out to the grill cook. The bartender service was terrible. I don't know if they were use to a single black man eating there. They were very nice just didn't check on me as I'm use too. As I was finishing g my second tour at Scott AFB, I received recommendation after recommendation about Popeye's Chop House. I finally had the chance to go after a ceremony that brought many former unit members to town. The restaurant takes me back to a simpler time where the basics are delivered with excellence in a simple atmosphere and that's what makes it special. I knew I needed to pull on my big boy britches and dig deep to make sure I experienced Popeye's at its best. We shared the onion rings which were out of this world and I settled on the 16 oz. Ribeye which came out perfectly cooked and tasted like beef is supposed to taste. We met our friends out in Saint Rose, Illinois for a great meal at Popeyes chophouse. The service was very friendly and honestly the highlights of the meal were the Caesar salad with anchovies I had asked for and sautéed mushrooms. The fried chicken was good but I don't think I would drive 40 minutes from where I live in Belleville for it again. What's interesting Is that items on the menu are very reasonably priced until you get to the steaks. My friend had the steak and it looked very good. read more

Spectacular! I cannot believe I drove through cornfields to arrive at this amazing steakhouse. It may be in a small country town and the ambiance may be plain Jane, but the food and service is outstanding. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Before I made the hour drive to Popeye's, I called to make sure they were open. It took me several calls to finally get through, the line was constantly busy. When I did get through the hostess who answered informed me, I could not have a table for one until after 8:30PM. I was calling at 5PM and was ready to hit the road. I asked her if I could be served at the bar and she said, yes. I was thrilled, after all that is where I prefer to sit anyway. When I arrived, I got a little scared when I saw how full the private parking lot was. I kept my fingers crossed that there would be at least one open stool at the bar. Fortunately for me, there were several open spaces. So I quickly made myself at home close to the center. I was promptly greeted by my bartender/server, asking me what I'd like to drink. I quickly responded, "I'll have a Manhattan, please."He asked me, my choice of whiskey and proceeded to make my cocktail. I had heard great stories about their amazing onion rings. So when he sat my drink down in front of me, I told him I'd like an order of them. It's not on the menu, but they do offer half orders and since I was dining alone he offered it to me. The half order was still enough for two. The rings were thick, huge, well-breaded and prepared to a rich golden color. They are now my favorite onion ring. Now let's talk about the main attraction, my Ribeye. I was torn between the Prime Rib and the Ribeye, so I asked the bartender which one he preferred and without missing a beat, he replied, "Ribeye". I trusted him, after all he made a good Manhattan and told me about half order of onion rings. I went with the Ribeye, medium rare which they did with perfection. I also, did upgrades on my salad and one of my sides. I went with a Caesar Salad and Brussels Sprouts. I have a hard time not ordering sprouts when I see them on the menu. Both were easily the exact same deliciousness you'd get at a top steakhouse in STL. The tenderness and juiciness of the Ribeye, stole the show. It melted in my mouth with robust flavor and it was so easy to cut. This visit, I had no room for dessert. I couldn't even finish all the food I was served and had to take a to-go vessel home. Adding my left-overs to two eggs the next morning, made a fantastic breakfast. Other highlights of my first visit, were my second cocktail which was a, Dirty Martini with Tito's. I was also impressed with a bread basket with fresh warm bread and a little cup of whipped butter. I cannot tell you the last time I saw a bread basket in a restaurant. Also, little details that make a difference, at least to me. Have have hooks under the bar for hanging purses or light jackets. They also still use linen napkins when serving guest at the bar. Only thing that disappointed me, was that their to-go vessel was not Eco-friendly. With the quality of everything else, I can let that slide. A surprise and throwback to the good old days, was seeing boxed matches with their logo on them at the bar. Many moons ago, that was a staple item at any restaurant. They all had books or boxes of matches. When smoking inside a restaurant was banned, it was farewell to the matches. This has always been one of our favorites. However, it has been four years since we have been here because we have been living out of state. We went last night with friends and I have to say I was disappointed. Waiter wasn't horrible but we have had better service. Had a failure on the appetizers. Waited and waited. Table that sat after us got their order. We were not charged but it was aggravating. It was very slow getting food. Food was not top notch. It was edible but just wasn't great. Ordered four piece chicken and only got three pieces. Of course they brought out an extra piece. This was our second visit in the past two months. We've ordered steak dinners both times. In the first visit, we ordered them medium-well and my boyfriend's steak was closer to rare and mine medium-rare. The reviews are so positive on here that we thought maybe it was just an off night, so we went back again. This time, the steaks were more like well-done and mine was so tough I couldn't even chew it (much less reheat it the next day for him to eat it!). It was very disappointing. We won't be back. We spent over $200 both times for the two dinners and drinks, (we arrived early, but still had to wait over an hour past the reserved time to be seated) and we can do drinks and better steaks at Bretz in Carlyle for about half the price. It's been a couple years, but even with a crowded Saturday during prime dining hours, plus wedding party this place can get you seated and drinks on the table quick if that's your thing. Tried the Excel 150 anniversary draft lager, nice and refreshing. Don't see that as an option in the E'ville area. Steaks did not disappoint, and like mentioned their waitstaff was good at what they do. Even gave the option of their special Wasabi filet, made with a New York strip cut instead. And if you can save room for the carrot cake do. We normally don't do deserts, but having it described as fresh baked this morning it was a must. It's well worth the drive. read more

First off, a little background on me...I'm a 41 year old human that looks like a morbidly obese version of one of those hairless cats that isn't very coordinated or feels shame. For where it's located Popeye's is awesome. St. Rose is in the middle of nowhere and hard to get to from St. Louis, but it's worth the 57 minute drive. We were there to celebrate our Father's birthday, and he likes the place. He chose not to pull out, so we are obligated to buy the man dinner just like he most likely did for mom way back on that magical night I was sired. Did he make her pay??? Good question, but how TF would I know...I wasn't born yet. Moving on. I got home from a golf tournament that day and was still pretty hung over when I arrived in the beautiful town that's known as St. Rose. The only other time I've been there was when I ate at Popeye's in 2000. It's just like my own hometown...Good people, cheap beers and not much else to brag about. I think I knew a girl from St. Rose that went to Carbondale, but I was really high all the time back then and rarely showered so we most likely were platonic friends. My first review is of the back parking lot. There is a spot you can stand where all you smell is cooking meat. It's amazing. I stood there ripping a dart just breathing in that magical brew along with my Menthol heater and I was a king at that moment. All my problems (alcoholism, body dysmorphia, the last season of Game of Thrones, etc.) melted away. We got a few apps to start. Crab cakes and Salt N Pepper wings were both very good. I feel like there was a 3rd app but I can't remember it, so it couldn't have been a game changer. Bread was legit. I got a bowl of the Potato Soup instead of a salad because I clearly needed the carbs. It was great. The entree's are all above average. The steak temperatures were all a bit under, so keep that in mind when ordering. My ribeye was not trimmed very well and had a hidden ribbon of fat running through the middle. I would suggest getting the prime rib. Our party of 8 got 15-20 drinks, 3 apps and 8 entrees and it was about $700 after a healthy tip. That's not bad for the quality of food. If it were closer to civilization I would put it on par with Sam's Steakhouse and Hamiltons, but not quite as good as Citizen Kanes or Annie Gunns. Overall Popeye's is a VERY cost effective spot for an above average dining experience. I never used the commode there, but I was told it was fine. The ride home was uneventful and way too long. My body began to push back but I made it home to a safe space so I could begin my 2-day hangover. I might return. read more

This is a go to for celebrating special occasions. We came today for a birthday. That being said today was just okay. One of our party had the roasted prime rib and asked for medium rare and received it medium well. If you like prime rib you know that is not the way to eat it. . The other issue we had was the vegetables. They were green beans and squash. It was not grilled or roasted as we were told but they were boiled or steamed. There was really no flavor. My ribeye on the other hand was perfect so just ok. We will probably be back but it won't be my first choice next special occasion. read more
