As a Texan, I can honestly say this is THE BEST BBQ I've had in the Tampa Bay area yet. This ranks as one of the top 10 best BBQ places I have ever been in my life - Texas and Memphis included in that ranking. Lunch gets busy (line-out-the-door busy), but it's worth it. The chicken, the ribs (my gawd, the ribs!), the pulled pork sandwich, the cole slaw, the brisket. And the various sauce!! All of it is fantastic. The owners are honest and genuinely care about their customers. We have taken people from out of town here for lunch (Arkansans and Texans) and to this day, they rave about the food. It's a hole in the wall, no frills like other reviewers have noted - yes, they give you chips like Doritos but who cares? You are not going there for chips. YOU ARE GOING THERE TO EAT SOME AMAZING BBQ. SO GO. NOW. I'd also like to point out that their BBQ was so good that I asked them to cater my wedding 2 years ago. OK BBQ I've been there a couple of times now. I've seen all the positive reviews and I don't get it. The barbecue was fine but nothing special. I had both the pulled pork and rib special. There wasn't much smoky flavor, the accompanying sauce was just OK. The cole slaw tasted like it came from one of those big plastic jugs from Costco. Not much to say here that hasn't already been said. The pork was moist with lots of flavor, the ribs had a nice smokey flavor and were well cooked. I had the beans and they were as expected...probably from a can but still good. The lunch special seems to be the way to go, with the upsize as an option. It better than most backyard barbecue enthusiasts can put on a plate. You can't beat the lunch at any price. As noted, you have to ask for the hot bbq sauce because it's behind the counter...and it's worth the ask. We were served quickly and with a smile. My favorite place in Pinellas Park for lunch. Its our office's Friday tradition. I always get the special or if your feeling hungry get a half rack of ribs. Great staff. After coming often I started noticing an extra rib or two on the plate. Its super fast. But get there before lunch hours or it will be packed. Being born and raised in Georgia sets the bar pretty high on a few different categories in life and BBQ is no exception to that rule. BBQ is not the easiest to find in St. Pete, at least the GOOD stuff is. I went to Poppa's BBQ today for lunch, and let me tell you, this is the real deal! I got there about 12:30, at the height of the lunch rush, and by then they had already sold out of the ribs and chicken. This gem makes all the food they are going to have that day, and when it's gone, it's really gone so get there early! I got the regular size pulled pork sandwich and my lunch buddy got the jumbo lunch plate that came with 2 sides and a drink. The jumbo size is a HUGE portion of meat on a large bun that made me glad I got the smaller size. The baked beans were good, but nothing too special. They had a little sweetness to them with a little bit of pulled pork added in, and the potato salad was also tasty. It wasn't too wet and had a little bit of mustard and relish added in. All in all it is a great place for delicious bbq when you're down in the St. Pete/Clearwater area! I'll definitely be back, just much earlier next time since I want to try some ribs! read more

This is, in my opinion, the best BBQ in the Tampa Bay area. Having lived in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Florida I have experienced of the best and Poppa's is up there at the top. Sure, they don't offer brisket or sausages or french fries or homemade iced tea and they're not open for dinner or on weekends - but the BBQ is as close to perfection as it gets. Twice in the last year, as I took a bite of a chopped pork sandwich, I thought: "This is the perfect BBQ pork sandwich." Just the right amount of smoke and bark but so tender all at the same time on a perfectly fresh roll and just enough of their signature sauce. Mike's ribs, Memphis style, need no sauce and again, are the perfect combination of bark and tenderness. Their side dishes are nothing spectacular but that's not why there is a line out the door most days. It's the BBQ and if you know BBQ or think you know BBQ, you owe it to yourself to come taste the work of a master. read more
